Nelson Mandela dies at 95 - CNN.com

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Good or bad, a lot could be said. That doesn't matter, just like many others in history it does not matter, Mandela influenced more people for the better then any one of us have and more then many others of fame in our history.

Did he though?

I'm genuinely curious. I've heard conflicting stories about him. Obviously we've all heard BFBF's sentiment. I've also heard he was a communist and that he was behind some pretty sketchy **** like bombing school busses - I'm not vouching for the claim because I can't confirm it. I'm anxious to hear what other who know more about it have to say.

I never understood the great devotion for the man. MLK and Gandhi didn't blow up department stores, schools, and libraries. You could have the greatest point in the world, but the moment you start harming innocents you are nothing but a POS.

He should have died in prison.

Fox News had a Donald Rumsfield on briefly saying it was amazing hearing Mandella talk about his arrest saving his life. That they plans he and his group had made to bomb schools and injure civilians and children were horrible...

I remember enough about him to know that pre-arrest his group was pretty extreme but I have no idea the power he yielded in that group or if he was just a follower or lemming or what.

Holy hell, that's funny. I had to click to see what the hell would be worthy of reporting for Limbaugh. He is switching stations in Los Angeles? Wow. How many listeners does he have in this country? How many care? A tiny fraction of the radio listening audience that listens to Z100, KissFM LA, Stern100, or probably even Don Anus.

So what's the deal? Did he really not blow up schools and libraries? Or did he blow up children but for some reason it's okay? If the latter, why is it okay?

I never heard anything about blowing up schools. But I do know that when he was younger he was in favor of a violent revolt to end Apartheid.

Good riddance. Socialists dumped in a hole, or stacked in a pile are socialists who can do no more harm on this earth. Quickly to Hell with you, Nelson. Quickly to Hell.

So, in regards to the "greater good" that Mandela was credited as causing?

Be more clear, please.

Well, for starters that he is heralded as a major player in the human rights campaign globally, especially in pop culture over the last 20 years.

And follow up: That current leaders and extraordinary people claim him as an influence means nothing to you?

Further, that people compare him equally to Mahatma Gandhi - what is your take there?

(I know more about Gandhi then I do Mandela, but both are barely anything to know.

Some people say the same thing of American leaders. Do you think the same of Harry Truman? He was a New Dealer (socialist?) and he bombed plenty of schools . Or is that not a good comparison?

Does cough syrup count?

I am asking him from the position of the average American who thinks of the guy as a hero and knows nothing about him. Myself, I am just curious to hear TYTT's take any way I can get it.

If that's all there was to drink, I'd drink it! Cheers!

The guy lived an incredible life and achieved one of most significant world victories in modern times. He was also apart of a somewhat unstable revolutionary group before prison where some violence or the planning violence can be linked to him. Pretty interesting guy to me. Not surprising many world leaders admire him.
