McGee was a great return specialist...

Recommended Posts

but how do you feel about him as a cornerback? I felt that he showed improvement as the year went on and I certainly give him the benefit of being a rookie. It did seem though, that he was picked on a lot and got beat on a lot of key third down plays. My guess is that he is going to be a decent CB, but was wondering what others thought.

I'll take his coverage skills over Winfield's...but Winfield was a better tackler. Of course, that has more to do with Winfield being an ungodly good tackler than anything else...

A bit off topic, but still on the topic of being a returner - how many fumbles did Clements have this season on punt returns?

I'm a huge fan of Nates (OH-IO), but god damn, hold on to the !@#$ing ball.

". . . was a great return specialist."

Is he dead?

Any reports you may have heard of his demise (as a cornerback) are premature. He will be fine. BTW, he was not a rookie this season. He was a second year player. Some of the quicker receivers schooled him (Antwan Randle El) but he has enough natural ability he'll get better. He came out of a small school, so it takes a bit longer.

Furthermore, they should just stop having Clements return punts. It is foolish to have your #1 and #2 CBs get massacred, especially on punts, especially if you have plenty of other guys looking for a chance (like J/F? Smith). Smith couldn't fare worse in terms of mistakes than Clements did this year, and he is so eager to make an impact that I think he should get a shot.

Mcgee is doing a great job. I second the notion that he is working with some great tutors that will make him a solid, if not great, #2 corner.

Does that mean that Terrence is going to cut off Milloy's hand with a light saber?

More like Marvin Harrison's, Chad Johnson's, David Given's, Antwan Randle El's hands.....

Too bad Vincent has so many entrepreneurial interests outside football based on his results with Evans it appears as if he would be a hell of a coach.

McGee will be fine especially if we can upgrade at DE and get more consistent pressure on the QB without blitzing.

I agree with the point about getting Nate off of punt returns. Of course if McGee gets to the next level as CB we shouldn't have him as a return man. I always think of Jason Sehorn and what happened to him.

Fast Freddie should be the man.

I agree. I believe he'll be recruited to be one.

oh please DCT - I didn't expect revisionist history from you of all people. Winfield was better than Clements last year, much less McGee. He was - and is - a great cover corner who is undersized and unfortunately, couldn't catch a cold. At the same time no less an authority than the Patroits best receiver called Winfield the top cover corner in the league last year. Most of us would agree he's the best tackling corner in the league, bar none. I watched a bunch of the Vikes games on Subday Ticket - with him injured the last several games, Minnesota's secondary became a true sieve. You could also tell that other offenses avoided Winfield - he being the only player worth a hill of beans in that secondary. He actually made several game changing plays early on in the season.

All that being said, the Bills couldn't afford him. McGee is a decent corner right now and definitely has the athletic ability to become a solid player. This secondary has the potential to become great but let's not put the cart before the horse just yet.

Upgrade at DE?? I think all 3 of our DE's played just fine this year - and Ritzmann adds nice depth if he pans out as projected...

I saw a fair few Vikes games this year too - and Winfield WAS THEIR D. They had nothing without him. He really is the best cover/tackling corner in the entire NFL. His hands are crap - and I think that we won't miss him so much given the make-up of our secondary right now, but he was and is a great CB.

I think he's going to develop into a solid playmaking corner. I lost count how many nice breakups he made this year, or hearing the announcer saying "almost intercepted by McGee". If he can use his hands like he does on returns, and develop his cover skills a little more, he's gonna be a fine starter.
