My scouting notes on Jets v. Bills

very good, I have two thoughts the way NY tries to intimidate and man handle our wide receivers and having replacement refs - will they call anything at all ?

secondly the game to me is Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller in the passing game against the Jets LB's

I agree. And I'd add Chandler or Dickerson as well. If we can hurt their LBs in the passing game, especially in the middle of the field, Ryan will have to change his usual coverages. But as the OP pointed out, the Jest are very stingy with the middle of the field.

GO BILLS!!!

  • Jets edge defenders are fantastic against play action, rarely if ever lose contain on the naked boot. Complete opposite of the Bills who are terrible on contain (I’m looking at you Chris Kelsay)

Very nice.

With Kelsay playing RDE, does this limit his exposure to the bootleg plays, as QBs would be going to their RIGHT, toward Williams?

I don't really know.

Kelsay is such a high motor guy, he gets easily fooled by PA and misdirection, I really do hope that the other guys can get Kelsay to relax a little and just do his job

Kelsay crashes down A LOT on bootlegs, so when the fake handoff is made and the QB rolls out, he's often trying to recover, giving chase. Since he's not the fleetest of foot, he rarely (if ever) reaches the QB before the pass is thrown. It happened again against MIN this preseason. When the Vikes were near the goal line, Christian Ponder faked a handoff and rolled out to his right. Since Kelsay crashed down, Christian was able to pick up the first down before the slow footed #90 reached him. Had Kelsay stood his ground and not bit on the fake, he could've easily had a tackle for a loss.

This is pretty much what I see from him all the time.

If memory serves, the Jets rushed for over 200 yards in both games against us last year.

To me, this game comes down to "can we stop the run?" Must force Sanchez into third and longs. I don't think he will beat a lot of teams that way.

Nope, Jets ran for about 125 both games... at a little over 3 yards a carry. I think it was 2010 when they really gashed us

Agree with both... I really think we are going to see players "force the issue" with the replacement refs, make them make the call. As anyone who has played sports knows, it isn't a foul/penalty unless the ref calls it. I know that if I was a DB I would be pushing the limits. Also we will see more Spiller this year in the passing game. We saw some last year, and it seemed like he would get open and then drop the football. B/c CJ on a LB or safety really is a speed mismatch

The Jets are actually pretty conservative (it may look confusing, but still is safe and fundamentally sound) until you get in those must pass situations, then you see the funky stuff... and Ryan is really smart, the funky stuff isn't always designed to get to the QB, it often times is designed to get you to throw it into a trap.

Great stuff - thank you for sharing. Especially since he had to be difficult to watch both of those games - the first one because the Bills got killed and the second because the "should have won". Keep up the good work.

OP - might be a stupid question, but are you a Bills fan or just football fan? (doesnt matter either way, insights are great, just curious)

Bills fan when watching live, but when I study, I am a football fan if that makes sense. I literally sit at my computer (or ipad now, which is the best) watching every play 2-3 times, sometimes more if something interesting happened. Run plays are the easiest b/c most nfl teams run the same run plays and it is only 4-5 different ones at most, so that is pretty quick. But pass plays, I watch the safeties first, then the eligible receivers, then CB's/LB's, then the blocking. If you work from farthest away to the LOS, you can be pretty sure what is going on. But even still sometimes you see some weird stuff.

When you take the sound and crowd out of it and it is just the game film, it really feels more like research than anything else.

i have been lucky enough to have the use of nfl preseason and rewind this year. So thanks for the pointers. reviewing plays and watching same play more than once and being focused really has opened my eyes to the depth of the game. i forgot to thank you for your work presented. Thank you.

How do you get access to the footage.

Yeah it is a complicated game... even after watching we can't be 100% sure what is going on b/c we don't know the exact plays/assignments. But it sure is fun to figure out. Thanks for the kind words

Very cool thread, thanks.

I honestly have no idea how this game is going to play out. I worry about the Jets defense. If we can come out and run th eball effectively, I think we'll be okay. That's a big "if", though.

From what I've seen, Revis is very good at being physical, right up to what the refs will tolerate, it's one way he really excels. I think having an open question on the refs/enforcement in week 1 could help us as Revis will need to hold back a bit, or potentially draw a flag. If I were on the Bills, I'd be vocal with Revis and the refs, making sure they see the contact. (Yeah, I know this is whining, but I think it could help with the winning.)

Watched both games a few times on all-22 took a bunch of notes

I really like this match up for the Bills. With the DL and OLB upgrades, I would expect the Bills to sit back and play coverage and make the Jets QB's (whoever is in there) beat them while only rushing 4. Bills I would expect to use multiple TE and RB packages to keep the Jets out of their funky nickel/dime packages.

Let me know if you have any comments/questions

Which is why I've been harping for years on the importance of staying out of unmanageable down/distance situations, especially against DCs like Ryan. He will play you straight up but the second he gets you in a bad down/distance he will scheme to overload you on one side of the LOS and bring the house.

Not sure if you saw the link posted earlier today that had the BuffaloRumblings breakdown. I think it had some very good points about what Gailey did to counter Ryan in the second game we played last season. I agree with that blogger and look forward to more of the same on Sunday. At least until Ryan shows he can stop our tight, 2 TE formations.

Yup having Barnett and Moats/Bradham playing OLB instead of Kelsay / Spencer Johnson is a huge upgrade

Yup, I saw Brian's good post... he definitely made some good points. The different thing about Buffalo's 2TE offense is that the Bills rarely release Lee Smith into pass patterns, he is mainly a blocker (and an exceptional one at that).

I think teams like the Jets are why we brought Dickerson in, personally.

I agree that Dickerson was brought in to be that 2nd receiving TE... I know lots of fans are really intrigued to have him on the team b/c of the success of NFL teams using 2 TE's. It will be interesting to see how he is used, if at all. Lee Smith played really well against the Jets in 2011.

Well that clinches it. Look for Lee Smith to make hay on the seem patterns this coming Sunday.

That was some smooth jazz right there.

I'm mostly worried about shovel passes and screens getting by our D-line. I'm not too confident in our LB's ability to get off blocks to make tackles.

EDIT: I also hope to see multiple RB sets. Motioning Freddy or CJ out of the backfield to be lined up on a LB is a Buffalo advantage every time.
