Vince Young battling for NFL future

Aug 9,2012

Vince Young tumbled from budding superstar to fighting for a roster spot on the Buffalo Bills.

One of the greatest college football players of his generation, Young was chosen No. 3 overall in the 2006 NFL Draft. He was a Pro Bowl quarterback in 2009. Three years later he is in competition with Tyler Thigpen for the backup role with the Bills.

“Vince Young does have a future in the NFL but he has got to win the backup job this year,” Steve Wyche said Thursday morning on “NFL AM.” “I was speaking to Bills General Manager Buddy Nix, they are only keeping two quarterbacks and his battle is with Tyler Thigpen and he thinks it’s going to go down to the fourth (preseason) game.”

Young started three mostly forgettable games in Philadelphia last season for an injured Michael Vick, however he is reportedly struggling to pick up the Bills offense.

“His future is his past,” analyst Mark Kriegel said on the same “NFL AM” broadcast. “It’s such a steep fall that we’ve actually lost sight of it. This guy was a two-time Pro Bowler, a Rookie of the Year, he was supposed to be RG3.”

Of the 13 quarterbacks taken in the 2006 NFL Draft, only Jay Cutler is penciled in for a starting postion in 2012. Fellow 2006 draftee Brad Smith is slated to be a Wildcat quarterback and emergency passer, leaving Young to battle for his NFL future.

“If Vince Young doesn’t win this job that phone’s not ringing,” Wyche said. “It barely rang before Buffalo called.”

I hope he figures it out here in Buffalo. Not sure it's going to happen though. But it's kinda funny he says he was supposed to be RGIII - for all we know RGIII could end up more like Jamarcus Russell. Just seems like a bad analogy, but unfortunately, it doesn't sound like Vince is catching on. Get the guy off his meds, they always slow ya down.

Young relied in strength and speed to get him through college and sure Texas dumbed down the offense for him...fast forward to today where he is learning a complex offensive scheme while trying tovread an equally complex defense and its painfully obvious that he doesnt have the mental capacity....what a shame....still think that 6 on the wonderlic wasnt a bad sign?

Why a separate thread for the same discussion ?

Vince Young has had trouble with his emotions and his understanding of schemes. I have not yet heard that he doesn't work hard. JaMarcus Russell showed up WAY overweight and never put in any sort of effort at all. Russell deserves to have failed out very quickly as he did. Young, I think might just be limited in terms of some skills/aptitudes that are essential in the NFL. I can root for a guy that tries and fails, I can boo a guy who doesn't try.
