What's Your Opening Day D Line Up Lookin Like ?

Recommended Posts

I know it's a ways off but with all That Buddy , Chan , Whaley ,& Wanny have done to bolster the D this year i have a vision of what my starting line up is going to be on the defensive side of the ball with some rotational players & was wondering what some other Bills fans are thinking as we dream of the dominance our D will have this year not only in the AFC but in the NFL ..

This is my take - what do you think ??

M . Williams ---------- M . Dareus ---------- K . Williams ---------- M . Anderson

Rotation - C . Kelsay ---------- K. Heard ----------- T . Troup ----------- S . Merriman

The LB corp is where i really need some help ! We have a ton of young & veteran talent but we can only have so many & could have one extra if we don't sign the kicker we drafted  I know that Sheppard & Barnett are definitely in this mix as starter but who will be the 3rd LB & the back ups ??

? Barnett -----------------------------------Sheppard ------------------------------- ?????????????

A . WIlliams ----------------------- J . Byrd ---------------------------------- G . Wilson --------------------- S . Gilmore

Rotation -- T . Mcgee ------------------------ ?? ------------------------------------- D . Searsy --------------------- R . Brooks

Well that's what i got & just so you all know i ain't no great football mind but i did play one on TV once --- NOT !! Like i said i was just wondering what the other dreams are for this years line up b/c after all the time i have spent on this sight i know you all have your own opinions & aren't afraid to let others know what those opinions are !! So fire away Bills fans

you don't have kirk morrison in with the linebackers. do you think they are going to cut him? i kinda think that after hearing some interviews with him, he is someone that i want around to mentor the younger guys, he sounds like he really has his head on straight. not to mention, it seems he was a pretty good outside lb in a 4-3 a couple years back, he just might have some football left in him!

LE Mario DT Marcel DT Williams RE Kelsay/Anderson

Spencer Heard Carrington Batten

SSLB Morrison MLB Sheppard WSLB Barnett

Bradham White Tank

and your secondary looks good. Not making any cuts just saying who I think will start and backup, although I think Troup is gone.

Mario--KW--Dareus--Kelsay --------->Merriman, Anderson on obvious passing downs. Kelsay and Anderson probably split snaps. Troup and Spencer Johnson are primary DT backups. Dwan Edwards is cut.

Barnett--Shep--Morrison/or FA camp cut ala Barnett '11

McGee Gilmore Williams is 3rd CB

Byrd--Wilson

This looks good. I think final cut comes down between Spencer, Troup and Batten

OK so Anderson and Kelsay weigh 260. Not exactly your typical DE in a 4-3.

Am I crazy to think Dwan Edwards wins the starting job at a slightly slimmed down 285 and rotates out on passing downs? He just seems to me a lot harder to run block against than the lighter guys.

I thought the guy was really solid against the run last year, if there was such a thing on our team later in the season.

Chan said he thinks Anderson can play the run and play all downs, but I don't know. The Patriots were trying everything to stop the run last year (they gave up 4.6 yards per rushing attempt), I think if Anderson was doing well they would have had him in there but they used him as a specialist.

260 in a 43 is about right for RDE, Dwan is listed as a DT. Anderson is at his best in a rotation, if they play him too much he will less effective. I think we will get some bigger (and better)ends in here but that will take another year and it's good to have small guys for the speed rush aspect.

Dwan Edwards was signed in the past specifically becasue he is a 3-4 DE. Either he or Spencer Johnson will not make the team - possibly neither. Merriman is an OLB. He is not a DE though he can rush the passer from a 3 point stance. The only reason he did that last year when they played a four man front is we had no one else who could rush the passer. If his ankle is ok he starts at OLB over Morrison. Kelsay and Anderson will be in a rotation at DE and Carrington backs up Mario Williams.

I'm worried about Sheppard. If Morrison and Merriman both look good or if the kid from Florida State looks good at OLB, I could see Barnett moving to MLB and starting over Sheppard. I just don't think he is big enough to play MLB in a 4-3. Hope I am wrong.

I think they keep 6 CB's - Williams, McGee start with Gilmore, McKelvin, Brooks, and Rogers all making the team. McKelvin and and Rogers will be the primary return men - Smith wil be cut and no longer return kickoffs.

The battle for SS will be interesting. Wilson played well and probably wins the job but Searcy has size and talent. Also Scott will get some playing time too.

I am also not sold on Byrd(would extend Levitre long before I extended Byrd). Not sure if he has great ball skills and I don't think he has elite speed. If Searcy has an awesome camp and Byrd is so/so I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilson move to FS.

This is a joke, right? Hard to take any post seriously that contains the phrase, "not sure if [byrd] has great ball skills."

I know there are only a few players on this defense I'd hate to see us lose in the transition from 3-4 to 4-3: Moats, who I think could still show something, and especially Carrington. To me, Carrington looks like the kind of player - and Moats, to a lesser extent - who, if we cut them, would be snatched up by a team like Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Houston, or the Jets - a team with a solid D-Coordinator, and they'd go on to 8 year careers as really good starters. I just think they need a Coordinator who knows how to use their talents; I hope that ends up being Wannstedt.

I think McGee is still the starter over Gilmore at least early on but Gilmore is def the nickel back with McKelvin or Brooks the dime back

Morrison will be the starter on the strong side to start eventually splitting time with Bradham who I see being the starter towards the end of the season as well

I am concerned with the depth on the D line or mor importantly the quality of depth they have. If Troup could somehow be a productive backup it would make a world of difference.

Merriman...K. Williams...Dareus...M. Williams

Rotation. Anderson, Troup, Carrington, S. Johnson

LB- Barnett...Shep..."Moats"(You heard it here first)!!!

Rotation- Bradham, Tank, Morrison

CBs- A. Williams(3rd starter on the D with that last name)...Gilmore...

Nickel- Leodis, Dime- Brooks, Rodgers (Youth Movement in the back end, Mcgee does not make the final cut)

Safeties- Byrd, Wilson(gets replaced by Searcy by week 8)

Rotation begins with Searcy, ends with Wilson and Scott

Morrison starts at the other LB slot.

Justin Rodgers is your missing CB - he was great last season.

Searcy's spelled with a 'c'.

Other than that it's pretty straightforward and you've got it right I think.

Well more than half of his INT's were horrible overthrows by the QB. I can think of only one or two times were he took a great path to the ball and made a pick on a well thrown ball. I will grant you though it is hard to judge last year with the absence of any pass rush.

Carrington has played out of position every year. He is a natural 4-3 DE. I think he gets 5-6 sacks backing up Mario this year.

Byrd was famous in college for his ball skills. He's brought that to the Bills every time he's had a chance (with some pass rush to create chances).

Agree with you about Carrington - he has a chance this year to finally play his position.

I think we see some lineups putting Kelsay in at LB in special packages on runs. His best suit is run stopping and putting him behind a big time DT could be effective, especially in some Nickel setup with Scott in there too. I don't know if it could be used as a goal line thing but I think Kelsay will make us feel satisfied with him this year.

Safeties:

Byrd and Wilson with Searcy rotating in and possibly taking over this year.

CB's:

McGee - Rodgers - Gilmore - Brooks - Williams. All five will likely see the field and I would bet no one has over 50% of the seasons snaps other then Gilmore. With our division and schedule I imagine we have Gilmore, McGee and Rodgers on the field at the same time...with Scott. Yes, a 4-3-5 defense.

LB's:

Morrison - Barnett - Shephard

Bradham - Carder - Moats

DT:

Williams - Dareus. Edwards on the team as a 3-4 nose when we need to pull a down lineman.

DE:

Williams - Anderson

Kelsay and Merriman as rotation. Kelsay on the field for running downs to rest Williams.

Needless to say Wanny will have a lot of tools to create a lot of packages.

Well, yeah, oops. Was naming the guys in my head - added Byrd when Scott was supposed to be in for him. We'd be good though with 12 guys.
