Jerry Sullivans Article Garbage

Duh. The point of Sullivan's column is that it was foolish to sign Merriman this year, not claim him off of waivers last year. Who was clamoring to sign him after he came up lame last year?

You said if the Bills didn't sign him this year that people would call Ralph cheap. Preposterous.

Yes...just like people are saying the Bills cutting Maybin was the obvious thing to do. If we're anything we are consistent.

Is there a biggest joke of a profession than sports "columnist?" Hindsight is 20/20. If the Bills let Merriman walk and he has a good season, Ralph is cheap. Now, the Bills who badly need pass rushing, took a chance on a former elite pass rusher and it is a terrible move?

Sullivan is the voice of the miserable and has zero accountability. He stated the Bills might go winless this year. Does he man up and state he's wrong? Hell no. He finds another way to piss on a team that has provide a very exciting season. Merriman also is directly responsible for recruiting Nick Barnett, who maybe our defensive MVP.

There are a lot of jobs I couldn't do (artitect, high rise window washer, gay porn star) but I have little doubt I can do Sullivan's. His job is to rip the fun out of everything and transfer his own feelings of inferiority on to others. Luckily for him, there are enough miserable people to give him an audience.

Yeah, it's hilarious how 2 faced people are. People were killing Maybin the second he was drafted and never gave him a chance. Now that a 23 year old kid made a few hustle sacks, the Bills are the dumbest organization ever. Some fans of the mindset of a 12 year old girl.

Not sure what one has to do with the other, outside of the fact the Bills seem to be proven wrong on both counts.

OK, Here's how this needs to play out. Buddy decides to give Shawne (with an e) Merriman another chance. He fully recovers next year & he plays lights out all year. Fast forward to the AFC Championship game...Bills vs Pats...56 seconds left...Bills up 38 to 36, but Brady is doing his thing & drives down to the Bills 33 yard line...3rd down & 6 yards to go. Brady is trying to get a little closer & drops back for a pass to Welker on a crossing pattern. Shawne (with an e) busts thru & sacks Brady taking the Pats out of field goal range. Brady has no choice but to go for it on 4th down, Shawne (with an e) busts thru again & tips the pass at the line & Wilson picks it off...Bills are on to the SB. The camera pans on Shawne (with an e), & he mouths, "That was for you Jerry", while doing his "Lights Out" dance. Yeah baby!

Doesn't change the fact that your byline is on that page -- And the very error you're pointing out is on that page.

C'mon, John -- You of all people should know that copy editors are the ones responsible for those errors, NOT the photographers. Photogs' captions are known to be plagued with inaccuracies. Hence, the need for a copy editor.

Point being, I'm sure they'd be happy to fix it if you contacted them. Apparently, you'd rather correct posters here.

To each his own.

no, photographers generally write the cutlines. they're moved with each photo. could be that the website editor made the mistake, but how does that make this my mistake. i didn't write the cutline. i don't manage the web page. my byline's on the page, but i have no control with what happens with my stories once they move on the wire. some are chopped. some are edited. some move as is, be it on the web or in newspapers.

i don't see what the big deal is. i'm merely wondering how Bills fans can't spell the name of a star player, while criticizing someone having a point of view.

it's an opinion. it's open to being debated. but to call it "garbage" or being "mailed in," well i beg to differ. that's up for debate, too. me choosing to provide my point of view isn't unreasonable either. and that i chose to do it in this method is fair, i think.

what's the big deal.

If you're talking about Jerry's work, I don't think it's mailed in, but I do think it's calculated to get a rise out of fans (both pro- and con-). That he threw Maybin's "success" into the equation cements that for me. No Bills fan, and I mean not a one, thought that Maybin would amount to anything post-Buffalo, and a lot of us still don't. To hold that up as some sort of indicator of this current front office's ineptitude is pandering at best. I don't think Sullivan is an idiot, but his writing is just noise to me. Gaughan and Wilson (and now McKissic) are providing analysis that are more worth it for me to read as a fan. Your articles get to some of the underlying stories behind what's happening at OBD. If a writer is going to contribute opinions, though, they had better have more basis than "the Bills have sucked, and here's another example of how."

I am "ex-media" as you put it, though not in the news biz. But I'm around news types enough to know when a guy is mailing it in.

If the Bills don't sign Merriman: Ralph is cheap. Bills are cowards. No risk, no reward.

If the Bills sign Merriman and he fails: Bills are dumb for wasting money on broken players. GM is incompetent.

If the Bills sign Merriman and he succeeds: Find something else to complain about.

Photographers write cutlines/captions, and copy editors (ALL copy editors of all newspapers or online publications) are responsible for editing them and ensuring accuracy. Photographers are notorious for introducing errors. Good (or even decent) copy editors know this -- and do this. I never said it was your mistake. It was the mistake of the website's copy editor, and I noted that your byline happened to be on that page. My point is that I believe your time is better served pointing out mistakes there than here.

I think now we've gotten to your point. Why not take on the OP instead of correcting TWO posters in the thread with the same juvenile line? Just seems petty for someone like you, John. Of course it's your right. Just like it's our right to judge you -- as a professional -- by these actions.

what's the big deal.

I could ask you the same question. This is a friggin' message board. Let it go.

For the record, I enjoy reading your articles. This crap -- not so much.

not worth the effort to take on the OP on this. that person has a right to their opinion.

this is crap? c'mon. now who's the one being lazy. must everything be GREAT or garbage, SUPERFANTASTIC or crap. is there no place for some nuance here?

point is, my two posts opened a discussion here, and i'm all for that. without yelling or flaming others, i've politely and methodically explained myself without calling anyone juvenile or what they wrote as being crap, garbage or whatever.

all i was wondering is if the OP and at least one other poster here are such big fans of Shawne Merriman, you'd expect them to get his name spelled right. ... just sayin.

And, as you so eloquently pointed out, we're all entitled to our opinions. My opinion is that I value your articles over your editorial insight on this board.

What if I were to point out the obvious grammatical error in your sentence? ... "that person has a right to their opinion." (Note: "person" is singular, so "their" should be "his or her.")

I'd never go there, though.

I still enjoy your articles.

Merriman's attitude and help in pulling players here, and changing the culture of our team psyche is worth it alone, imo. He showed flashes during the pre-season and even had a couple plays during the regular season.

Now is that worth it? Who knows. I have no idea if a couple FAs would still be on the team if not for his involvement, and I have no clue if our defense would be as chippy either. (Not that they are great, but at the least they have attitude)

in the ever-changing English language, there has been movement on accepting "their" to refer to a singular person, as it encompasses both "his" and "her."

either are now considered valid in many circles. :nana:

good chat, nonetheless.

So true, as soon as I read the Maybin comment I thought I was being trolled on a forum. Comments like that simply belie sound football knowledge in lieu of garnering attention.
