Can we afford to miss...AGAIN?!

Recommended Posts

I hate to be the typical "Buffalo Pessimist" simply because, when Bills fans get pessimistic, it tends to annoy the hell out of me. However, I must bring up a legitimate concern. The Quarterback position. A topic that, in itself, will send shivers down the spine of even the most optomistic Bills fan. On his most recent "Mock Draft", ESPN's Mel Kiper, Jr. had the Buffalo Bills selecting Auburn QB Cam Newton at number 3 overall. Now, I've read mostly negative comments from fans on all different message boards on the internet. And, while I can get with why the Bills fans wouldn't want to see Newton dawning the new duds the Bills are due to debut soon, I'd like to briefly explain why this selection would be a GOOD thing for the Bills. To put it plain and simple: If Roger Goodell walks to the podium on Draft Day #1 and announces to the world; "With the third pick, in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select-----CAM NEWTON-Quarterback, Auburn." Now I ask you this...Should that quote come out of Commisioner Goodell's pie hole on draft day, you mean to tell me that these same fans who are criticizing Newton's skills and his self indulging attitude, won't be jumping out of their chairs and high fiving fellow Bills fans?

It is simple. If this goes down in April at the draft (which I undeniably STILL believe it will not, and nobody would ever convince me otherwise), it would be the most exciting moment Buffalo fans have had in over a decade. Probably since the Bills inked Bledsoe away from the Pats. Now, while I dont believe it will happen, there is one reason and one reason ONLY why it may...a little thing called...PUB! The Buffalo Bills have had ONE winning season since 1999...ONE! And that year, they missed the playoffs losing to Brian St. Pierre and the rest of the Steelers' scrubs. For over ten years, the Bills have been a complete joke. The are craving for something (or somebody) to catapoulte them into relavence once again, and if they want to do it with one big ass swing, Newton is it. He is THAT GUY!!! Think about it, new uni's, new "franchise quarterback", and "Lights Out" rockin the mullet on his dome. Trust me, all thos disgruntled fans who were so very "sick and tired" of the Bills losing ways, who vowed after 4-12 last year and an 11th straight non-playoff season, will be bresking out their Visa and Mastercards as if they were Porn addicts who swore off smut, only to catch a glimps of a new internet hottie, and caved while jacking up their credit card statements and watching their wives drive off in the family van with the kids. It will be like the last 11 years almost NEVER HAPPENED, and, in a way, that is exactly what Ralph Wilson and the rest of the brain trust need to do. Cam Newton could, no, WOULD do it, even before he walks onto an NFL field for the first time. PUB-LICITY!

Now, back to why this would, and probably IS a bad thing. Think about what the afformentioned "11 years" have been like as a Bills fan........I'll give you a minute......WOW, threw up in your mouth a little bit, huh? My point is, the Bills CAN NOT get this wrong again should they select a "Franchise Quarterback" in the draft this year. Come on guys, we've heard the word "franchise quarterback" in the NFL draft over the years. Bet you can name more FAILS than PASSES when it comes to that. Here, let me give you a start: FAILS- Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, Rick Mirer, Andre Ware, David Klingler, TODD COLLINS, J.P. LOSMAN, Jeff George, Heath Shuler. PASS- Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Michael Vick (sort of). Now, think of all the quarterbacks who were taken in the later (sometimes WAY later)rounds, or werent even drafted AT ALL!- Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Tony Romo. It's a huge decision, and every damn second better until the draft better be devoted to that number 3 pick by the Bills front office! If they get it wrong, the next decade may be even MORE painful!

Yes You are a pessimist and what is the point of asking if we can afford to screw up? I mean is that a real question? Like there are times you do wanna screw up?

Sure all that PUB! as you say would be a welcome change for the team if they take Newton at the draft. But i'd venture that coverage would die out if Newton took the reins and didn't win any games.

If the Bills want lasting coverage, they need to turn down the suck and start winning many more games than they have been. Doesn't matter if Newton is piloting or Fitz is.

Newton, is one of those exciting players. He could be GREAT, or he could be a giant bust. I doubt he's going to be anywhere in between. So if the Bills pick him, I will be all sorts of pumped up and excited... but in the back of my head, I'll be very, very scared.

Sort of sums it up for a lot of us. At the end of the day we got to trust that if Chan and Buddy think CN is the deal we'll take him. If not, we'll get a great player to help our D.

Newton will be a bust. He is this years Jimmy Clausen. Tallest among the midgets. Pass.

There seems to be a lot of people who know the future around here.

I agree.

Marketability is off the charts for the guy.

Its a big huge national spotlight on the city and the organization

I see him as a bright lights/big city kind of guy (think LeBron in Cle vs. Mia)

A ME guy where this city/franchise needs a guy that PROUDLY embraces the history and understands what simply must be done here: win.

ME guys don't do that. They think of how lucky the team is to have them. A good coach and a whole bunch of Jets/Pats defenses to confuse you can humble you down but...

Will you get humbled and a) come out of it like Vince Young/JaMarcus? or b) will you bear down and will yourself to be the best

Guy that think they have already achieved scare me. ME players scare me. Hows this kid going to react when the coaches dont want/need him to run it on a play.....but he overrrides them and does anyway. Is he going to throw his sh-t in the stands? tweet to his followers that the coach is a dik? blow up the locker room?

Will we have a "get me teh F out of Buffalo" situation after 2 years? Only to go to Jerry Jones (that c.ck muncher)after Romo's meh career is finally done there.

or will he attain god status and bring the good times back? There are the pluses....

ridiculous raw skills on this guy

this guy pulls games out late and dramatically...clearly does not like to lose

Old BUFF could use some swagger and shine.

Chan is a good pairing with this kid.

Would be fuuuuuun to watch it work out.

Ahh...relief...

Kim Newton is a HUGE question mark a HUGE risk- especially for the money and length of contract that will be committed to whomever the Bills pick in the first round. Personally, I think Newton will turn out to be a total bust and one of the biggest a-holes of this draft, but that's JMO.

The Bills will pick either Blaine Gabbert or Von Miller in round one - both of whom will excel in the NFL, and neither of whom will cause Bills fans more pain (except, of course, when we play against whichever one ends up elsewhere).
