BillsPhan Posted March 13, 2010 Share Posted March 13, 2010 Buddy Nix's formula to build his Buffalo Bills appears to be 98% draft, and only use Free Agency to "fill in gaps." But wait a minute here. The Bills have huge gaps right now at tight end and wide receiver. They have plenty of money under the cap, right now. Yet Antonio Bryant and Ben Watson have just signed very reasonable contracts with other NFL teams, while Nix didn't even invite either one in for a visit. And please, don't reply to this post by telling me Antonio Bryant would not have been an improvement over Stevie Johnson or James Hardy. Or try to convince me that Shawn Nelson will become a better tight end this season then Ben Watson will be. Those arguments are laughable. Now I'm thinking that Buddy Nix is more then just an old fashioned draft - first football guy. Now I'm thinking that Buddy Nix has a level of arrogance hiding beneath that "good ol" boy" exterior. Just becuase Watson and Bryant have had excellent seasons in the past, and they are well known (but certainly not "super stars") - he won't bring them in? He seems to be selecting more "unknown - under the radar" free agents to talk to and possibly sign, like Green and now this visit by Jimmy Kennedy. Is he taking his "personnel expertise" a bit too seriously? Who knows? The one thing I do know is that if Nix would have signed both Bryant and Watson, every Bills fan would feel better about our 2010 team, and not one single Bills fan would be accusing him of "breaking the salary cap bank stupidly". TO didnt make this team better but Antonio Bryant and Ben Watson are? Nobody is going to feel good about our 2010 team, were going to play and develop the potential and see what we have. This teams building process has been a disaster. Nix is not signing average free agents to make us look competitive and have us win 7 games, instead he is going to develop players in 2010 and maybe win 4 games and be more draft ready next year. That way, when the blocking "specialist" comes in, teams aren't like oh....100% run, stack the box, no threat here. The WR position (Hardy and Johnson), I'm not so sure about and I think we could have taken away some question marks there thru free agency. Did Bryant really get that? Thats the same deal AQ got. How embarrassing. PS I would prefer quality FAs on D. Watson and Bryant are bad examples. Now how about a Larry Foote or Joey Porter. You know, guys who have played in a 3-4 before and have won superbowls. I really want Larry Foote - he can be the veteren leader our very young team/defense needs. And why didn't Miami or the Jets sign him? As for Bryant, he is a mediocre, declining, and hot-headed player and the Bungles were fools for bypassing TO for him, much less paying him $7M/year. It seems like for the most part teams are taking a 'wait and see' approach to this offseason because of the CBA. I wonder how long before the NFLPA starts complaining about collusion. It seems like for the most part teams are taking a 'wait and see' approach to this offseason because of the CBA. I wonder how long before the NFLPA starts complaining about collusion. They're probably already complaining. Teams are installing budgets this year in place of the cap. So even though there's no cap in place and theoretically a team can spend as much as they want, it's not going to happen. The owners are looking to next year and a strike or a lockout. Hopefully both sides will come to their senses before that happens. The NFL is the most popular sport in the US by far, and a strike/lockout would damage that.
