Russ Grimm?

Recommended Posts

I'd take him in a heartbeat. Look what he's done with the mediocre OL talent he's had in Arizona, he made Gandy look good for example. He would have our OL whipped into shape in no time. A strong football minded GM, Russ Grimm as HC, maybe Weis as an OC, and a DC after the mold of Jim Jones or Dick Lebeau would have us headed in the right direction.

I'm not going to object to any decent head coach hire as long as they hire experienced coordinators.

The Bills need to dump the Mike Martz offense and Tampa 2 defense, personally I'd like to see a OC with a west coast background to revamp the current playbook to modern standards.

But then looking at the Baltimore offense I'd want to hire Cam Cameron away from them and make him OC and assistant head coach, or head coach. I know he is not a WC coach but he certainly knows what he is doing with an offense, unlike the Bills coaches for the last decade.

But then I really can't stand the Tampa 2 defense either, so a disciple of the Steelers 3-4 would be fine by me. Anyone know anything about John Mitchell DL coach and assistant head coach of the Steelers? I'd love to see the Bills run a 3-4 like Pittsburgh

Another guy I wouldn't object to is Mike Nolan the Denver DC, that Denver D went from near last in 08 to near best in the NFL this season.

Hopefully they will bring in a GM and he will hire either a proven head coach (not that many are out there that are willing to come to Buffalo) or a proven coordinator who can play a style of football suitable to Buffalo. I like Russ Grimm but would need to see what he would bring in system wise on the O and the D. Is he a 34 guy? I assume from his days in Pitt he would not be a Tampa 2 guy. What kind of offensive system would be bring? Would it be the Arizona throw all the time offense or is he more the old Pitt style of smash mouth football?

Also who is to say a guy like Grimm would be able to develop a QB? If hes hired we would need to have some very high quality assistants. No more Turk or Perry.

If you believe that building a top notch offensive line is a key to success in the NFL, then Grimm is probably the top offensive line guru out there. That doesn't necessarily mean he'd be a good head coach, of course.

"Russell Scott Grimm (born May 2, 1959 in Scottdale, Pennsylvania) is a former American football Pro Bowl guard for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League. He was also an All-American center at the University of Pittsburgh Grimm played 11 seasons for the Redskins and was a first team selection to the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team. He is currently the assistant head coach and offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals. Along with Jeff Bostic, Mark May, George Starke and Joe Jacoby, Russ Grimm was a founding member of the Redskins' renowned "Hogs" offensive line of the 1980s and early 1990s (deemed one of the best front fives of NFL history), which was a mainstay of the Redskins' glory years during the first Joe Gibbs era.

During his 11 seasons as the Redskins' starting guard, Russ Grimm helped lead his team to 4 Super Bowl appearances and 3 Super Bowl victories (Super Bowl XVII in 1983, Super Bowl XXII in 1988, and Super Bowl XXVI in 1992). Grimm was a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004, and a finalist in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2004, after the Chicago Bears fired Dick Jauron, Bears management considered Grimm as a top candidate for the job. The job eventually went to then St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Lovie Smith.

In 2005, Grimm added another Super Bowl ring (totalling 4) to his résumé as part of the Pittsburgh Steelers' coaching staff (Offensive Line Coach).Under Grimm guidance in 2005, the Super Bowl champion Steelers averaged nearly 140 yards rushing per game during the regular season to rank fifth in the NFL while also grinding out 181 rushing yards in their Super Bowl XL victory over the Seattle Seahawks."

One of the best ever to strap on the pads and lace up the cleats...

Russ Grimm - "I'll take da both o' ya"

Thanks for the memories, SJBF - lived in DC during that great Senatorial era, and watched the 'skins/Dolphins Superbowl XVII at Champions (Wisconsin & M St.)

My most lasting memory of that game - Dolphins' d-back Don McNeal bouncing of John Riggins, as Riggo drags him downfield for extra yardage...

Riggo/Redskins 27 - Miami Douchebags 17

It'd be nice to have yet another HOFer at OBD.
