The Bears have had some very good cover 2 defenses in Chicago under Lovie. The Tampa 2 can be succesful you just need the right players.

Yeah unfortunately the guy who has final say on where Shanahan ends up, is Shanahan - and, while he has said he'd listen to what Bills have to say, he's also said - rightly so - that he'd probably want to wait until the season ends to see what other opportunities are out there.

Like it or not folks, that's what faces the Bills with Shanahan and any of the so-called 'tier-one' candidates - and, unfortunately for us, whatever other offers that do materialize at season's end are likely to be better than thew one at One Bills Drive.

BTW, as far as I know, Shanahan is still saying that he's had no direct contact with the Bills to date.

What's everyone's infatuation with the 3-4 defense? The league is already extremely overpopulated with them, and guys are being drafted 1-2 rounds than they should be because there is a shortage of players to fit the defense.

I think because it is easier to find guys that are 6'4" 250 that can run than it is to find 4 good DL.

Shanahan was batting about .500 in the last three years of his coaching. There is a reason guys get fired. I'm not saying he will be a sure bust (I didn't say Jauron would be a sure bust)...but I'm very very sceptical about whether he is the answer.

The man has proven himself as an excellent coach year after year. Looking at a small segment of work to criticize someone like this is myopic. That's like saying Montana sucked as a QB except the years he won the SuperBowl.

Part of the reason he was fired (so I hear) was due to his renegade way of managing the roster - overpay for someone and just replace them with someone else if they didn't work out. This put Denver into salary cap hell. Plus, losing their last 3 games and missing the division title AND playoffs was probably Bowlen's last straw.

What I do like about Shanahan is that his teams ran the ball well and had very good offensive lines. These were guys that could run block and pass protect because they were more athletic. They were never the biggest OLs, but quick, fast, and strong allowing them to do whatever they needed to. This is why his offenses were so good.

I honestly can't remember his defenses very well, despite everyone on this board saying how they sucked. But in his 14 years in Denver, those defenses averaged around 11th best in the league in yards given up. Only twice in those 14 seasons were his defenses ranked worse than 20th, one of which came in his final year (29th). So, the numbers don't necessarily indicate his defenses "sucked". With the offenses he had, that can make up for the types of defenses those Broncos teams had.

I also hate how some coaches come in and try to install a system because they're familiar with it. The best thing to do, IMO, is to run an offense/defense around the talent you have. Parcells did this for years, which is why he was successful everywhere he went. Did the West Coast offense help Rob Johnson? How has the Tampa-2 defense worked out here?

+1. Furthermore, why do so many people seem to think that there's only 2 possibles defense we can run: Either the Tampa 2, or the 3-4. There are many different variations on both the 4-3 and the 3-4. You think Pittsburgh runs anything close to the scheme that New England runs, even though both are 3-4s?

What if we kept a 4-3, but went to a Philly/Jim Johnson style 4-3? Would that appease these people, or would they still insist on switching to a 3-4?

Personally, I'd prefer to stick with a 4-3, as long as we get some bigger & better players in the front 7. Schobel, Kelsay, Stroud, & Williams all seem poor fits to me in a 3-4. Spencer Johnson, possibly Maybin, and probably Mitchell & Poz strike me as solid fits in a 3-4. And in my opinion, the most important position in any 3-4 defense is the nose tackle, and we don't currently have one on the roster. Stroud, Williams, Johnson, & McCargo would all be better suited at DE than NT in a 3-4.

Not when there are 10+ teams that run the 3-4. There are very few college teams that use the 3-4, and the league is at, or beyond, its limit of 3-4 defenses. There are only so many players to go around, and teams are already reaching for players to fit their scheme. Switching to a 3-4 would be a bad idea.

I wanted Shanahan as our coach the day he got fired.

ditto...I wasn't upset when we retained Jauron...only because I get the whole continuity thing...(wasn't happy about it but wasn't upset either) but as soon as I heard the news that Shanny was cut loose, I started hoping beyond hope that Ralph would change his mind

3-4 Defense (with who we have)

DE - Williams

NT - Stroud (but would need someone else)

DE - 3rd Round Draft Pick/Free Agent (assuming we take QB/OL 1-2)

OLB - Harris

ILB - Poz

ILB - Mitchell

OLB - Maybin

FS - Byrd

SS - Scott

CB - McKelvin

CB - McGee

Maybin is too small to be a DE in a 3-4. You may also consider moving Scott to OLB permanently and let Whitner start.

Kyle Williams is not a DE. Anyone heard from Chris Ellis lately?
