The Compelling Case for Mike Leach as Head Coach

The Senator

Recommended Posts

So Mr. Wilson finally swallowed that bitter pill and jettisoned Dick Jauron - by all accounts a fine a decent man, but a disaster as the Bills head coach.

Now Ralph has a glorious opportunity to demonstrate why he's in the NFL Hall of Fame by hiring the next great NFL head coach, and it will be a marketeer's dream-come-true for Russ Brandon. The man is, of course...

Mike Leach - Talks Football, Global Warming, and Madonna

The logic:

1) Mike Leach is unquestionably one of the most innovative minds in football, an offensive genius with a record of success as OC and HC at Oklahoma and Texas Tech - particularly with QBs, but also receivers - and a resume that includes stints as defensive coordinator, o-line coach, and qb's coach. If you want to turn the Bills offense around 180-degrees (and that's what needs to be done), Leach is your guy.

2) Leach is a marketeer's dream - after 3.5 ( ) years of the soporific Dick Jauron, Mike Leach will provide some comic relief to go with his overwhelming competence, and will be one of the most sought-after interviews in all of sports. Ralph and Russ need to create some buzz to ameliorate the undercurrent of ill-will that will no doubt manifest itself at season-ticket renewal time - Mike Leach is 'instant buzz'; just add water.

Want to see you're team's head coach featured on...

or

Buffalo has not embraced a head coach since Marv Levy, with the possible exception of Wade Phillips - Leach would be a huge hit here in The BuffTown. Just imagine Leach doing the weather on the 6 o'clock news...

3) He's affordable, and available. Yeah, he just signed an extension at TT, but being the Pepperdine Juris Doctor he is, managed to get the buyout clause removed, and he's making less than Jauron was/is being paid as the Bills head coach. And there are rumors that Louisville is looking to lure him away from Lubbock.

Of course, all that is secondary to winning, which is all Leach does. He has a no-nonsense approach and tolerates no slackers - I guarantee there'd be no coddling of players, no indoor practices in inclement weather...

"As coaches, you put pressure on yourself to improve, because ultimately the blame lies there,” Leach said. "Anybody that’s not on board, you get rid of them. It doesn’t matter if it’s a player or a coach or somebody in the background… if they’re not on board, you get rid of them.”

Someone's gonna lure this guy to the NFL, Russ/Ralph - don't let it be the Dolphins, the Jets, or - God-forbid - the Cheatriettes*! Belichick? Smellichick! This is Mr. Wilson's opportunity to hire the genius that will put the Bills on a lasting, winning track, and show the whole football world why he's in the Hall of Fame!

Time to 'find your inner pirate', Ralph. Swing your sword.

GO BILLSSS!!!!

REVERSE THE CURSE!!!!!

That, people is what you call a "Hail Mary".

That is, a completely outlandish idea, with no basis in reality that if in the one if a zillion chance it works out, makes the writer look like a genius.

And of course, if it doesnt, everybody forgets about.

Good drugs whereever this guy is. He's obviously the "junior" Senator.

Good Lord...this organization is in shambles and you want to take a chance on a college coach....after a DECADE of taking chances on non-proven coaches?

Mindless. Absolutely mindless.

Houston Oilers Run and Shoot with Warren Moon.

....in 1993. The "No huddle" was unstoppable back then too, how'd that work out this year?

If Leach is such a scary good game planner well then what happenend in the Ole Miss game when the "genius" had over a month to gameplan? He threw out the same old garbage offense against a SEC defense and they got smashed. So much for adapting and innovation.

Senator also doesn't want to mention that Texas Tech's success is largely due to it's soft scheduling. TT's non conference schedule consists of a 1AA team, New Mexico and Rice who have combined for 1 win this year and Houston who they lost to.

'08- 2 more 1AA teams, SMU (1 win) and Nevada

'07- 1AA team, SMU (1 Win), UTEP (4 wins), Rice (3 wins)

I think for it to be considered a crusade, it has to somehow involve Jerusalem.

I think there might be a connection with the Holy Trent and Mary thing going on and as much as the Senator dislikes the Holy Trent, if Mary helps get Mike Leach into Buffalo the Senator would probably be very happy. It would be like Football heaven.

Connection made, we are now on a crusade of Biblical proportions.

There is nothing compelling about bringing Leach to Buffalo. The only thing that might be moderately interesting would be watching the circus atmosphere around him and then watching as another 3 years is wasted. No thanks!

There's a reason teams don't run a spread offense or option offense in the NFL. If you're looking for a way to get your QB killed then it's perfect. Other than that, you'll just get your QB decapitated. The gimmick offenses don't work with players the size and speed of those in the NFL. If the did Eric Crouch would be in the Pro Bowl. Hell you don't even see anyone running the Wildcat full time and that's basically a pro style wishbone.

Can we please stop with this incessant Leach nonsense.

It seems the only compelling argument Senator can put forth is thet Leach might give a funny press conference every now and then.

The reason he has to be so entertaining is that his team is going nowhere.

How is he a genius?--even he says his pass only offense consisits of just 4 or 5 plays. Wow.

His "pro style" offense is a joke--pass 60 times a game. There is nothing innovative about this.

As for being some sort of QB coaching specialist---every one of his star QBs racked up big numbers in his tomato can-killer offense and every one has failed at the pro level.

Graham Harrel, Codey Hodges, Jonny Cumbie, BJ Symons, Kliff Kingsbury----all were ruined for the NFL by Leaches bush league offensive scheme.

A worse Bills HC candidate could not be imagined. The fact that some here are actually agreeing with the mere mention of Leach as a legit HC shows us how bad Ralph has ravaged the psyche of the Bills fan.

Senator, if you want a funny HC, why not start chatting up Jerry Glanville? At least he won a few pro games.

Couldn't you say that about Steve Spurrier when he was a college coach? I just don't think many guys come from college to the NFL directly and have a lot of success. Don't get me wrong I think that Leach wouldn't be a terrible choice if the big names are off the table (I would go with Russ Grimm but thats just me) but I wouldn't think that the whole college to NFL thing might not work out.

BUT Leach fits the whole opposite of DJ thing 1- offensive guy 2- A guy who will instill passion into his teams. Which in my mind makes him an acceptable choice from a philosophical perspective.

WOW! You could NOT have a more ridiculous comparison!

Martz engineered one of the most potent offensive assaults in the League (that's the National Football League, chief) and went to 2 SBs and won a ring----he didn't do it by throwing 60 times a day (perhaps you didn't notice the career of Marshall Falk).

Leach is a joke---a mediocre coach of a one trick offense somewhere in the middle of the pile of Div I teams in Texas.

By even comparing (forget equating) the two, you lose all credibility.

I would take Martz as our OC, if we had a decent QB.

OK, so now that Cowher, Holmgren, and Schottenheimer have all said 'NO THANKS' to Ralph, and Shanahan is wavering on even interviewing, let's talk more about Leach...

Has there ever been a true spread offense that was successful in the NFL? Leach should try the UFL, BS offenses like that might sell a few more tix.

Yeah - Belichick* and the Patriots* used it to go 16-0 in 2007, and continue to use it almost exclusively. Most recently they used it to put up a 59-0 shutout of Tennessee on a snowy October afternoon in Foxboro. Several other NFL teams use a spread offense, or variant thereof, very successfully including the Steelers, Colts, Packers, and Broncos. Next stupid question please?

If he's such a great coach then why are other COLEGE teams not lining up at his door? And thanks for the college football lesson about the spread. The point is not that he runs the spread, BUT IT"S THE ONLY OFFENSE THAT HE"S EVER RUN! His offense doesn't work in the NFL and after almost 20 years of running the spread, you think he's going to have a seamless transition into a balanced pro style offense? There are a ton of "offensive genius's" in college football who have been 100x's more successful then Leach (Rich Rod, Meyer, C. Peterson) but there is a reason that they are not in the NFL.

And the answer to that question - Leach was reportedly wooed by Washington, Auburn, and Tennessee last season, and is currently being wooed by both Louisville and Virginia. He's also often mentioned as a possible replacement for Pete Carroll, should Carroll decide to leave USC and return to losing in the NFL.

Leach - Huskies

Leach - Volunteers

Leach - Auburn

Unfortunately for Buffalo, we can probably add Leach to the list of coaches that have declared themselves unavailable for the Bills (Cowher, Shanahan, Schottenheimer, Holmgren, etc.)...

Mike Leach to stay at Texas Tech

My favorite part about all of this insanity is that not only are we talking about a college coach, which is almost 100% of the time a bad idea, but a college coach that consistently loses against bigger faster defenses!

Good thing the players in the NFL aren’t big and fast...

Record against the marquis teams in the big 12:

Texas: 2-7

Oklahoma: 2-7 3-7

If you are so big on a coach that employs the spread why not drool all over Urban Meyer?[/b] :wallbash:

fixed

(Nov. 21, 2009 - Texas Tech 41, Oklahomo 13)

Link - Leach had reason to Jump Around

Meyer's an attractive candidate, but doesn't have Leach's record of taking players that were rejected by Texas, Oklahoma, A&M, et al and working them into a successful program - which, IMO, is similar to the challenge he'd face with the Bills roster.

That, people is what you call a "Hail Mary".

I like juniors, and once was called 'The Junior' Senator for just that reason, but unfortunately have grown too old to date them without raising eyebrows. Likewise with the drugs, which are now limited to controlling my cholesterol and high blood pressure, which soars every time the Bills find yet another way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. :wallbash:

After a decade of not making the playoffs, yes I am willing to take a chance on a coach who took over a losing program and has had a winning record every year, making TT bowl-eligible 10 consecutive years while revolutionizing college football offenses, and has a legitimate shot at the Big 12 title next season.

Couldn't you say that about Steve Spurrier when he was a college coach? I just don't think many guys come from college to the NFL directly and have a lot of success. Again, Spurrier failed for many reasons, but mainbly because he did not take the job seriously and preferred the golf course to the long grinding hours of an NFL head coach. He openly mocked Joe Gibbs and other HCs who kept cots in their offices and worked 20-hour days preparing for game-day. Ultimately, Spurrier wanted out of the job.

The college coach I prefer use for comparison is Leach's buddy...

Senator, if you want a funny HC, why not start chatting up Jerry Glanville? At least he won a few pro games.

Well, you left #1 overall pick Tim Couch - whom Leach coached at Kentucky - off your list, but your boy Wes Welker has fared well thanks to Leach's meticulous route-running drills, and your heroes Bill Beilcheat* and Marcia Brady* used a Leach-type spread offense to put up that 59-0 shutout of Tennessee in earlier last month in snowy Foxboro.

Speaking of which, aren't you due back in Foxboro to finish eating Belichick's toe jam and polishing Brady's knob?

I love how people write "undeniably the most innovative football mind in the nation" like it's some kind of fact carved in stone. It's not a fact. It's an opinion. One lucky Crabtree TD and this guy is a genius. What is the record of college "genius" coaches in the NFL? Not good.

PTR

You call it 'one lucky Crabtree TD' Promo, but if you listen to Harrell talk about the play, you'll realize that it wasn't just 'luck' - that was a called play that they practiced over and over again - at least 10 times a day, according to Harrell - and used repeatedly...

And it's not just that one play, PTR, that earned Leach the 'offensive genius' handle, or the six NCAA passing titles, 3 total offense titles, and NCAA passing TD records at Texas Tech - it's the meticulous way he prepares his WRs, his emphasis on pass protection (Harrell was sacked 14 times on 626 passing attempts in 2008 - once in every 45 attempts), and the fact that his QBs and offenses have broken school and NCAA records at Valdosta State, Kentucky, Oklahomo, and Texas Tech.

I realize I'm in the minority in wanting Leach, and it probably doesn't matter since he's already stated his intention to stay at TT next season, but Ralph should at least try to lure him away. The list of candidates that have declined to interview for the Bills job is growing daily. If the Bills don't land him, when Leach finally does end up in the NFL it will probably be with the Buccaneers - they already got the pirate ship...

"NCAA passing titles"??

"total offnese titles"??

Are you serious?? Those mean nothing! Yeah, I forgot yet ANOTHER Leach QB bust--the biggest one ever---Tim Couch, yet another example of how Leach cannot propare any of these great QBs for the professional game.

Despite all these "titles" (that is VERY funny), NO success in the NFL.

Welker's success has little to do with Leach teaching him how to run routes, or Crabtree for that matter. If this was true, the League would be littered with WRs who had such knowledge imparted on them by this "genius".

Give it up, your arguments are either either nonsense or disprove themselves.

It's just not funny anymore.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! TO MIKE LEACH!!!!!!! :rolleyes::thumbsup:<_<<_<

You're a WEENO, WEO - all you have to do is re-read your copy of today's Boston Herald and you'll realize that the reporters who cover your favorite NFL team understand something that you can't seem to comprehend...
