  1. They are running so wild the titans are forced to punt from their own 45 yard line. Yup, they are running right to the sideline. Aren't we talking about like 4 passes here? Come one people..... Also, now I am dissapointed because I have nate washington on my FF team and he doesn't even have a catch yet.
  2. This was from tonyjustbcuz Well to answer the question that you repeatedly asked (but, I have a feeling you already know that answer)..a big part of the scouting went through the eyes and ears of Tom Modrak who has been here for the past decade..(maybe longer?)..He has insisted on certain players like Mike Williams...and when we could've had Drew Breeze in the draft, he argued with Greg Williams against selecting Drew! Greg Williams so much as said this the last time we played them, and was happy to leave the Bills mismanaged organization. The biggest blunder of all though was in the 90's when Ralph Wilson let Bill Polian slip away. Another wonderful part of the organization was when Ted Marchibroda was here. You don't here much about when he was here, but he had a lot of input in the success of the Bills. Like you mentioned, we have made so many blunders in the draft it is almost unbelievable. Bryant McKinney has been very good for Minnesota for all these years, while Mike Williams has been eating himself out of the leaugue and trying to once again stick around the leaugue for a bit. Besides drafting which is a huge issue, we also lack the initiative to resign our players that we develop during their first contract, creating more holes to fill when we have a limited amount of draft selections. How do you replace players quickly like Antwoine Winfield, Pat Williams, Jabari Greer, Leonhard, Nate Clements etc..? You end up having to use one of your draft picks or pick up a marginal free agent to fill the whole while depriving your roster from improving as all you are doing is filling holes that is self-created by management's inability to re-sign players. Buddy Nix self-admittedly believes in picking up mostly (if not always) marginal players to fill holes on the roster. He actually mentioned that when he was hired. He doesn't believe in the "big-name" signings! Well, although their are teams who annually do the big name signings without much reward: Washington Redskins (Dan Snyder)...there are also teams like New England, and the NY Jets that sign big time free agents quite well, and they have been well rewarded for doing so. So I do not buy into that philosophy at all !!! How does a team go from bottom dweller to division champion? Look at Miami... 3 key things went into that.... Drafting extrememly well, Key acquisitions in Free Agency, and adding a twist and some ingenuitive thinking as far as their offense goes! ie: Wildcat !! Unfortuantely, the Bills refuse to consider serious changes and when they do implement a significant change they shortchange themselves by utilizing undersized players in the 3-4 defensive scheme which is fruitles. Hasn't the new management of Nix and Gailey stressed the point that they were going to utilize a players talent in a way so they can best succeed? (I know they have..) Does anyone really feel that the Bills have taken even one step towards that goal in any manner??? Also, how are you doing to develop your talent (now that's a contrast in terms..Talent??) if your younger players like Maybin, Moats, Carrington, Troup are either inactive or sitting on the bench most or all of the game???? How can Ralph look anyone in the eye and say "This I promise you, we are going to fix it", when referring to the Bills? How can he speculate that it will be at worst 3 years? I don't believe you can KEEP Tom Modrak as a paid employee and, try to convince the fans that you are committed to turning this ship around!! That would be my first step....Releasing Tom Modrak! Then I'd know at least that you are serious, as symbolic as it may be! The second step is I would promote Doug Whaley within the organization who has been a big part of Pittsburgh's success in the past. Third step, I would quickly trade or release players now or at the end of the season who have been anonomous players ie: Aaron Maybin....there are others but he'd be first on my list! This may be symbolic as well, but it delivers a message that non-performers will not be on our roster! Fourth step...but maybe this step would come first as the trade deadline is Tuesday...I would make at least 3 trades, even if we don't get the better of the deal. The main thing with a build through the draft mentality is you need as many picks as you can get! We need about 6 more picks, but I'd settle for 3 more on top of the extra one we have. Do you see the Bills doing this????? No, neither do I...it's kinda like running out of bounds on 4th and whatever with 4 seconds left in the game! Why wouldn't you wing it down the field and try for a big strike??? Why wouldn't you want a heavy turnover in a rebuilding organization????????????????????????????????????????????????????//// Fifth step...Although us fans are tough...and we apply pressure to a bad organization...do not admit publicly that you are going to focusing on drafting a QB in the upcoming NFL Draft ! If I were Andrew Luck, or Ryan Mallet I'd be thinking that maybe I shouldn't declare if it means the Bills might be the team to select me next year!!!!!!! Just shutup, or admit that you need a QB (Probably 2), (one through FA), OLT, 2 WR's, DT, LB's and that we are going to address these needs! Without disclosing your specific plan!!! Just a bad organization caught in the circle of self-destruction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was kinda hoping someone would tell me why Tom Modrak still has a job with the Buffalo Bills, how do you consistently fail in your job for 8 years and still keep it? Tom Donahoe was fired in Pittsburgh after he lost a power struggle with Bil Cowher, once Donahoe was hired here in Buffalp he hired Modrak away from Pittsburgh. They guy must have some photo's of somebody or something to keep his job, he should have been canned right along with Donahoe when he was fired years ago. How does the owner complain about the talent and then does nothing to correct the situation The problem in my view dog is that Buddy Nix made the O line a priority in the last draft and came away with Wang at #5, the guy hasn't even seen the field yet afaik. So he went into the draft and didn't see any O linemen worth selecting in the first 5 rounds? I just don't trust this staff, scouts-GM- head coach to make any decent selections at any position, I don't get how the owner can feel comfortable about them either. Perhaps he still sits in the draft room and makes some picks himself like he used to do in eariler years, that might be an answer as to why the team has no talent
  3. I'm interested if you'd still pick Ponder after the game he had today. I think the Bills should draft Robert Quinn OLB in Round 1, and Cameron Heyward DE in Round 1A (using a RD2 and RD4). Then draft Ricky Stanzi in RD3. I don't see a LT in the beginning of the second round. At ~#60 you can take Orlando Franklin and ~#63 Nate Solder. Guard Clint Boling is a possibility. I really think the Bills will acquire a tackle rather than draft one.
  4. Here's what I don't understand. People say Ralph Wilson is frugal. I've never seen any evidence of this though. PLease, why is he frugal? Is it the monster contracts he gave dockery, schobel, evans, kelsay?? How he's paid right in the slot for every frist round pick? Maybe it's because he let Nate Clements walk.. hes surely worth all that money fellow 0-5 san francisco gave him.. The Sabres are frugal. The Bills are not frugal.
  5. 1st round. DE Cameron Heyward, Ohio St. Bruce Smith part 2. 2nd round QB Christian Ponder, Florida St. Frank Reich part 2. 3rd round OLB KJ Wright, Missippi ST. Team nedds 3-4 LB's. 4th round ILB Nate Irving, North Carolina St. aka "the Predator", another 3-4 LB. 4th round OT Chris Hairston, Clemson. 7. Wrong. The draft is how any successful team is built. Check the rosters of the Patriots, Steelers, Colts, Ravens, Packers, Chargers and see how much of their rosters are draft picks. They will have more draft picks than FA's as part of their core talent. Free Agency is a two way street. A player has to agree to come to a team. What FA is out there this coming March that the Bills should go after? Or I should say what FA is out there that will be an impact player. If Nate Clements was a 49er should the Bills have offered him 88 mil? Have to be smart about FA. And the draft is the most important thing any organization has to build their team.
  8. Although the Bills and 49er's have the same record, I'd take the 49er's in a heartbeat. The 49er's are better overall in terms of current talent, especially at positions the Bills are really weak in (TE and LB). Staring QB (Push) Fitzpatrick and Smith both aren't what we would call starting QB's...so I'll call it a push... But hey, both of them scored high on the Wonderlic! Starting RB (Gore) Gore is a better running back than Jackson or Spiller. Although I think we have more depth Starting TE (Davis) Davis is one of the better TE's in this league. Who plays TE for Buffalo again? Top WR (Evans by an inch) Evans is better than Crabtree right now, but I'd take Crabtree over the next five years OL (49er's) The 49er's line isn't that good, but it is better than the Bills sorry O-line. LB ( Willis) Willis is a top 5 linebacker in this league. Other than Poz (who is good but not great), the Bills don't have a top 30 LB in this league Secondary (Bills) The Bills have more depth and overall talent in the secondary, but Nate Clements is still better than any of our current CB's...yes...even more so than McGee, McKelvin, etc. Coaching (Push) Gailey hasn't done anything yet... Singletary hasn't done anything yet...but I'd probably give the slightest edge to the the 49er's...at least Singletary won something as a player! History (49er's) Championships, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Steve Young (Bills have a great history too but there is something to be said about the # of rings) ***And a critical factor in determining whether the Bills are better than the 49er's....weather. Granted, both teams suck this year, but at least California has great weather year round. I predict the Bills will finish 2-14 (beat Chicago in Toronto and beat Cleveland) I predict the 49er's go 3-13 . The team tries hard as was evident against the Eagles by almost coming back and winning the game in the 2nd half.
  9. I can only imagine some of the conversation if there were to be an after party of ex Bills player and coaches at the end of tonight's game . Takeo Spikes , Nate Clements , Jason Peters , Joique Bell , Bobby April , & you can't leave out D.J. Have i left any one out that may have been a former Bills player that was in tonight's game ?? Heck - Peters & Clements contracts are probably as much as the Bills entire yearly pay roll !! Man i'll bet ole Ralph's ears would be ringing if there was a party !!!!
  10. The problem with this organization - not just this regime, but it's been consistent for the last several (must come from Ralph, then) - is that they lack conviction and decisiveness. Back when the whole McGahee fiasco was going on, I wanted him off the team as much as anyone else. When they traded him, they even got a pretty good deal - can't remember all of the particulars, but it was better than this Lynch deal. So, now they created a hole on the team, something we all know they seem fond of doing. But Levy was telling us about this kid Fred Jackson who was a good one and just hadn't got the chance yet. Okay, great. So, be decisive and have conviction in your opinion. Don't draft a RB in the first round that year...you said Jackson was good, so believe your own opinion and give him the shot. If I am not mistaken, this all happened around the time they were going to lose Nate Clements, and knew they would need a corner at some point. Another decision I was fine with, given the money involved there. So, if they had stayed away from Lynch, the top rated corner that year as Revis - we probably would've picked him given that was our other area of need. If they have just had the conviction to be decisive. I know, I know - would've, could've, should've - but imagine the scenario. You keep Revis away from the Jets, get him yourself, don't have to deal with the Lynch fiasco that simply replaced the McGahee fiasco, and Fred Jackson wouldn't have had to wait until last year to get a true full-time shot....which he made the most of, just as Levy said he would!! I run my own business, and if you cannot be decisive and have conviction that what you think will happen is right, you will go under faster than you can turn around. This is what is happening to the Bills right now. It can be illustrated with many other similar examples. Sorry, what does this have to do with your post? I agree, you can find kids like Fred Jackson at the RB position, but you have to be the type of organization that New Orleans is...you have to have the courage of conviction to know a guy like Pierre Thomas is a good player, and plug him in.
  11. I always thought 2000 and 2002 set the bar, but seeing that it's only been 3 years...that is depressing. So to get more depressing, ignoring drafts 2008-2010 for the "3-year evaluation rule", by my count, this is what we have to show for from 1997-2007 (and I'm being GENEROUS): Kyle Williams Lee Evans Terrence McGee Willis McGahee Nate Clements Aaron Schobel Travis Henry Antoine Winfield Sam Cowart Antowain Smith  I count 1 great player (Cowart) and 3 very good ones (Schobel, Clements, Winfield). Good god.
  12. I've thought about this all day and the more I think about it the more upset I get with the front office management at 1 Bills Drive. You're upset with them? Oh no, they just have a team of bad players, you say? Nonsense! These guys can't draft and when they have any players of note that want to be paid, you can just forget them. Lets think about this. Before we started the season we knew we needed two offensive tackles. Brad Butler had retired and Bell not only suffered a knee injury and was not thought to be a starting caliber tackle in this league. We could have found a tackle in free agency and at least one if not both new tackles in the draft. So who do we pick number 1? Spiller! Now don't get me wrong I like Spiller but with Jackson and Lynch on the roster he was a luxury pick. Yeah but we can build for the future with Spiller, you say? I say you don't put the dry wall up until you've nailed on the sheeting. This team needs a foundation and that starts in the trenches. We got rid of Jason Peters because the guy wasn't a first round pick out of Offensive Tackle University. He was an un-drafted free agent tight end converted tackle who just happened to be a hell of a lot better than that first round bust Mike Williams. Could we then pay Peters to stay? Nope. We didn't pay Pat Williams to stay for the same reason and we still don't have a D-Tackle that's a pimple on Pats but. I'm going to say it because we have all already forgotten last years game 1 against the Patriots. Did Trent Edwards look good in that game? Yes he did, because he actually had time to throw the ball. He cant think on his feet the way Fitzpatrick can and he's not an improvisor, but if you give him the time he can throw the ball and make plays. So who was the scapegoat for the fact that the front office was too stupid to get any decent tackles in? Not the brain trust. It was Edwards. I'm not saying Edwards was Joe Montana, but he never had a chance to be any good because the Bills didn't give him an O-line to ever find that out. My guess is that Edwards will get a second chance and when he does he may make us look even dumber than we are. Now to the Defense. Hey everyone lets switch to a 34 defense even though we don't have any of the front seven personnel on the roster to do it. Lets make Marcus Stroud a defensive end. Undersized Kyle Williams (The best D-lineman we have) can play on the nose. We'll get some guy who has a cadaver vertebrae in his neck (Dwan Edwards)to play on the other side, and then the guy we dratted as a defensive end (Alex Carrington) wont even dress. Instead will play another first round bust (John McCargo )who also is a converted tackle in that position! Genius! Linebackers? Dont even get me started. Maybin (another first round joke), and Chris Kelsay! LMAO! Maybe we can start the undersized and one of the best we have at the position in Ellison, or the other first round pick that's constantly broken in Pozlusny! No worries. The new D coordinator (Edwards) has this under control. Just don't tell the Jets that or they'll have 1000 yards rushing against us in 4 games. So what's with the secondary? Well besides yet another 1st round pick in Whitner, who Fewell was smart enough to replace with George Wilson, is back on the field, and now the DB's have to cover for so long because the front seven cant generate any pressure that the opposing receivers have time to adjust on the ball, and we cant get any picks. This team, the team I love and refuse to watch again until they can win a game, is a model of mismanagement. My 10 year old daughter could have picked better players at random, and put them in a better position to win! This front office is in total confusion mode! This years draft class: Spiller. Decent pick but not what we needed. Troup. Anyone seen him? Carrington. "" "" Easley. Injured Wang. Injured Moats. Injured Batten. Injured Brown. Cut, none else wanted him, re-signed Calloway. Released Number one picks over the past several years: Aaron Maybin Eric Wood Leodis McKelvin Marshawn Lynch Donte Whitner John McCargo Lee Evans J.P. Losman Willis McGahee Mike Williams Nate Clements Erik Flowers 4 out of 11 hits aint bad!
  13. Wish I was around to witness his 5 sack performance against Dan Marino in 1983. I miss having guys like him, Bruce Smith, and Nate Odomes on defense.
  14. The Bills have had the habit of using first round picks on CBs, only to let them go first-contract-and-out. Take a guy like Antoine Winfield for example. He's spent more years with the Vikings than with the Bills. They got more use out of that first round pick than we did! In looking over Indy's first round picks since 2000, I didn't see a single Antoine Winfield story. Not once did they let a successful first round pick leave in the prime of his career. TD drafted Nate Clements just a few years after the Bills took Winfield. Why? Was his plan to have a pair of shutdown corners for many long years to come? Or did he draft Clements as a replacement for Winfield? If the latter, it would imply TD had decided upon the strategy of letting Winfield go first-contract-and-out. The first strategy would have been a lot better than the second. But regardless of whatever TD's intentions may have been, his action was to let Winfield walk. Not only that, but Clements' contract expired under TD's general managership as well. (Levy franchised him for a year, then let him walk.) The value of a first round pick = the player's average level of play * the number of years he plays for your franchise. If your overall strategy causes your first round CBs to spend the first 40% of their careers with you, and the remaining 60% with some other team; then that strategy will reduce by 60% the value you're receiving from your first round picks. The whole point of using a first round pick on a player should be to get a long-term answer at a specific position. If a first round pick goes first-contract-and-out, that pick will have failed in the objective for which it should have been intended. I'll grant that with most of the Bills' first-contract-and-out CBs, the failure was not the result of bad talent evaluation. But good drafting requires more than just good talent evaluation. It requires the general manager to honestly ask, "Where does this player fit in my long-term plan for this franchise?" If the answer to that question is, "He'll be too expensive to keep after his first contract," it's a bad draft pick.
  15. While you've made good points, I strongly disagree with #4. In my book, a successful first round pick is a player who a) plays at a level at or above what you'd expect from his draft slot, and b) contributes a long number of years to your football team. With that said, let's see how many of the Bills' first round picks over the last decade or so have been successful. 2000 Erik Flowers. Result: bust. 2001 Nate Clements. Result: left the Bills after six years. He was a failure because his tenure here was too short. 2002 Mike Williams. Result: bust. 2003 a. Traded for Drew Bledsoe. Result: released after three years, including two and a half very mediocre seasons. b. Willis McGahee. Result: played about three years for the Bills, and then was traded away for a couple third rounders. Not enough value there to justify the pick. 2004 a. Lee Evans. Result: A solid #2 threat and a good deep burner. b. JP Losman. Result: bust 2005 none 2006 a. Donte Whitner. Result: a decent football player just barely able to keep George Wilson on the bench. b. John McCargo. Result: bust. 2007 Marshawn Lynch. Result: a solid running back who has not necessarily lived up to his draft position. 2008 Leodis McKelvin. Result: is developing into a very good CB. Only time will tell if he will go first-contract-and-out, as have so many other Bills' first round CBs. I ended with 2008, because it's too soon to evaluate the more recent picks. As you can see from the above list, there are no clear-cut success stories. You could argue that Lee Evans would have been more successful if he'd had better quarterback play and an offensive line that could keep the QB upright. But even allowing for that, 13th overall still seems a little high for the player we've gotten. Leodis McKelvin could become a clear-cut success story if he remains on the Bills' roster, and if he learns to avoid getting faked out. As for Lynch: if all we can get for him right now is a third round pick, then he is specifically not a success story. The same goes for any other first round pick who can't be traded for more than a third. Compare those drafts to the ones the Colts have had during that time. Peyton Manning was chosen first overall back in '98, so he was drafted a little before the data series begins. But look at the players the Colts have drafted since then. 2000 Rob Morris, LB (28th overall). Result: had about four seasons worth of starts over an eight year career (all with the Colts). Not an outright bust, but clearly didn't live up to his draft position. 2001 Reggie Wayne (30th overall). Result: is in his 9th season as a starter, and is still going strong. A clear-cut success story. 2002 Dwight Freeny, DE (11th overall). Result: another clear-cut success story. 2003 Dallas Clark, TE (24th overall). Result: is going into his eighth year as a starter, and is still going strong. A third clear-cut success story. 2004 none 2005 Marlin Jackson, DB (29th overall). Result: bust. 2006 Joseph Addai, RB (30th overall). Result: a reasonably good player who seems about what you'd expect from someone picked 30th overall. 2007 Anthony Gonzalez, WR (32nd overall). Result: is currently a backup, and may be a bust. 2008 none So that's three clear-cut success stories for the Colts, plus however much of a success story you consider Joseph Addai. If we give both teams the benefit of the doubt, that works out to four success stories for the Colts, and 1.5 for the Bills (Lee Evans plus half of Leodis McKelvin). The Bills should get credit for the rest of McKelvin after his contract is successfully extended, and after he becomes a regular starter who doesn't get faked out very often. The Colts had four clear-cut success stories out of their seven first round picks during that time. The Bills had 1.5 success stories out of their 11 first round picks during that span. Not only that, but of the Colts' first rounders, only Dwight Freeny (11th overall) was chosen higher than 24th overall. The Bills had significantly more first round picks, at a significantly higher average position in the draft, and yet came away with less than half as many success stories. If that doesn't indicate a problem with their drafting, I don't know what would.
  16. This is a great thread, johnnyb. When NFL free agency began, CB Nate Odomes was one of our very first free agent casualties. Since then, we've been perpetually burning first round draft picks to replace our top CB's for whom we refuse to pay market value: Jeff Burris, Thomas Smith, Antoine Winfield, Nate Clements, and now Leodis McKelvin. Similar problem at another skill position, RB, which began when we tried to replace the aging Thurman Thomas: Antowain Smith, Travis Henry, Willis McGahee, Marshawn Lynch, and now CJ Spiller. We've been arguing the pros and cons for each of these personnel decisions since this message board's inception, but the fact remains that very high draft picks have been used disproportionately on the skill positions like RB, WR, CB, and S at the expense of the OL and DL. And for the most important skill position of QB, we've been using a lot of precious draft resources to replace Jim Kelly: Todd Collins, Rob Johnson, Drew Bledsoe, JP Losman, and most recently Trent Edwards. I realize that these QB busts have been, in large part, due to poor scouting and such. Nevertheless, one wonders how the Buffalo careers of some of these guys might have been different had the Bills invested more 1st and 2nd round draft picks on quality OL players. Confidence is, after all, one of the most important factors in a young QB's development. It's hard to get in a productive habit of reading pro defenses and making accurate throws when running for your life 1 second after the snap. Just something to think about when next offseason rolls around...
  17. Takeo Spikes , London Fletcher , Marrio Haggan , Willis McGahee (although i hated him) Nate Clemens , Jabaree Greer , Sammy Morris , Richie Incognito , (I hate to say it but) Jason Peters, Pat Williams , Jim Leonard, Terrell Owens, Don BeeBee, With these guys would Schobel have stayed ?? The biggest one of all Bill Pollian (Think of those possibilities) !!! If Ralph would have payed or just tried to keep some of these guys would the state of the franchise be different ?? (That's a stupid question) I know there are more that i am forgetting - for one ,the corner in Minnesota but feel free to add to the list if you like . But it's like we just let the good ones go , but others pick them up and they have real decent careers & we keep guys like Maybin & others !!! So What do you think ?????

  20. too little an soft at every position say what yall want but when nate an winfield were the corners they came up an laid people out, pat williams is still laughing @ the bills cheap asses
  21. It doesn't look like he learned from the Jacksonville game a while back..... Nate going for the house coughs it up again when he could have iced the game. I know it made me chuckle a vindictive laugh when it happened....
  22. Nate Allen and Earl Thomas, two rookie safties who have played 4 career games have 3 interceptions already. Donte Whitner has 4 career ints. Donte, your bad angles, missed tackles, complete lack of ball skills and bad coverage are part of the problem so shut up and just play better. The greatest preseason Pollyanna posts were those predicting a Pro Bowl year for LiL D...laughable!
  23. i did notice the "playmaker" (Nate Clements) is still mentally weak......one of his bonehead moves cost them the game......he intercepted a pass with a lil over a minute left in the game, had a nice return going on, but slowed up to wait for blocking to develop....Roddy White followed up (ala Don Beebe) and stripped him of the ball and the falcons recovered it. the play starts around the 2:00 minute mark of this video: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d81b07611/49ers-vs-Falcons-highlights

  25. I liked Nate a lot, but I'm glad we didn't break the bank for the guy. Jabari Greer was/is every bit as good, IMO....he's the one we should have kept.
