Bills to let David Nelson walk?
KOKBILLS replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Fair enough... To be perfectly honest I would like nothing better than to be able to have the same mind set...And I probably would if Nix was not still lingering around with his nonsense...I don't trust anything the Bills do as long as Buddy Nix is still in the building...I just can't at this point...And for all our sake's I hope I'm dead wrong... -
I'll go on record right now strongly against Patterson at #8...I just don't think he's worth a Top 10 pick...That kid could not hold AJ Green, or Julio Jones jock-strap...He's a project and real raw...Yes he has great tools to work with...But IMHO he's not a Top 10 talent at this point... The guy I want if the Bills stay at #8, and Geno Smith goes in the top 7, is Dion Jordan who just lit it up with a 4.53 40...I think that kid is the next JPP or Aldon Smith...I REALLY like Jordan...

Just let me remind you...There are folks at OBD right now that valued Aaron Williams over Colin Kaepernick, TJ Graham over Russell Wilson, Marcell Dareus over about 5 Pro Bowlers, etc, etc, etc... I think your one line description of Nelson as slow, tall, UDFA with a busted knee is ridiculous...Come on...He's not slow...Never was...You do realize that Nelson's 40 times were in the mid 4.5's, including a 4.47 on wet grass in his Pro Day at Florida?...That's pretty darn fast for a 6-5 wide out...Is it not? Where the heck does all this slow talk come from? These armchair experts around here? I keep reading here that the kid is slow and I swear I wonder if any of you really even care about being right...Yes he was a UDFA...All that means is a ton of teams made mistakes Scouting him...Nelson was not used a ton in his 4 years in Florida...Players fall through the cracks every Draft...His production in 2 years is clear and obvious evidence Nelson should have been Drafted...And all reports are that the knee is fine and Nelson will be 100% for Camp 2013... There is no way I'm going to give The Bills FO the benefit of any doubt any longer...On top of Nelson's obvious skills in his role, he's a good kid, and by all accounts a tireless worker...He is the exact-type player that every Championship Roster needs...A receiver who gets open on 3rd Down, in the Red Zone, and who is not going to break the bank...Even at the 2nd Round tender salary Nelson would make 1/3 of what the Bills pay Kelsay...The Bills had two years of Nelson on the ultra-cheap, and instead of giving the kid the minimum tender, which is easily affordable based on what a healthy David Nelson gives you, they decide to create yet another hole on a Swiss cheese Roster at a position (WR) of zero depth...The is the exact type move that has this team lingering where they are today...They continuously make poor evaluations of talent both on the team, and in the Draft...And by the time they realize their mistakes it's usually too late...Last point about the tender...No way that minimum tender stands in the way of bringing back Byrd, or Levitre...It's not enough cash...Not even at the 2nd round tender amount... I think a healthy David Nelson will shortly prove to the Bills this was a mistake...But we'll see...I could be wrong, and the knee may never be the same...I realize the kid is not Megatron, or AJ Green...But, again assuming he's healthy, I think he goes somewhere and contributes in a big way from day #1... -

If that's true...then I'll agree... But I have to tell you...According to Marrone's own words, that's not the way the decisions have been made...He went to great lengths during his Combine interviews to claim his Staff was there to Coach what they were given, and that he had basically no input on the personnel decisions thusfar...Marrone also said that was his philosophy (Coach what they give you), and basically said that's what he told the Bills in his interview...Now...I'll grant you that could all be nonsense speak...But I think when you add it to the comments Brandon made about Buddy being absolutely still 100% in charge of the Football operation, AND the fact that Buddy is obviously the point man for the Football side so far (WGR interview, Combine interview, no Whaley interviews, etc...), it's easy to assume Buddy is still in charge...It may not be correct...But that is ABSOLUTELY the message the Bills want out there...They have been calculated in giving the appearance that Buddy is still 100% in charge...What the real truth is?...Well that's anyone's guess... -

If the Bills do go out and land Bowe that would certainly soften the blow...But Bowe is not going to come cheap, and that's an understatement...I like Bowe...But I'm really not sure he's worth top tier WR money... I disagree that a Rookie can come in and match Nelson, and I think that kind of opinion does serious injustice to exactly who David Nelson is and how good he was in his role...There are not many 6-5 WR's with a knack for getting open on 3rd Down, and in the Red Zone, the way Nelson does...I think TJ Graham is proof enough that a Rookie is no lock to step in and fill Nelson's shoes...But we'll see soon enough... -

Exactly...Of course I'm assuming Nelson will be 100% for Camp, and the knee is sound...But from all reports that seems to be the case... It's a stupid move plain and simple...But that's what the Bills do best, especially under Buddy...So should we be at all surprised? -
It's interesting that a former NFL QB, and future Hall Of Famer, pretty much had the opposite opinion of Smith throwing the ball today...I'm not sure what your watching and evaluating with Smith, but you're not even close...And I've seen almost every pass he's thrown over the past 3 years...Did he struggle at times? Yes he certainly did...But you don't throw for 98 TD's to only 21 INT's, and complete 67.4% of your passes in major College Football by accident...Smith can do it all, and when he's right, he does it with ease...And I have no idea where this great athlete, but not a good QB idea comes from with Geno...Everyone and their Mother knows the kid went to great lengths to be a pocket passer first and foremost. He even frustrated his coaching staff by not taking off and running more...He is a great athlete...But he's a traditional pocket QB... The real knock on Smith is his personality and demeanor when things are not going well...He has a tendency to hang his head a bit and get down on himself...That is the real concern NFL Teams have about him...He's a total gym rat and he loves football...He's humble and he wants to be the best...Does he need work? Of course he does...They all do...Even Andrew Luck needs work...But from a production, tools, smarts, and athletic ability standpoint Smith is more than worthy of #8 overall...Though I fully expect him to be gone by then...If not, and the Bills pass...I'll call it stupid just like most of the decisions they normally make on Draft day...

Got to think it's KC right now...But we'll see I guess...

Bills to let David Nelson walk?

Well there you go... I think the fact that Nelson said he's excited for the next opportunity pretty much shuts the door on any return to Buffalo...So basically the Bills decided he was not worth the tender...We'll see how that turns out... All I can say is this...I'm on record against this pretty strongly...I think those who are calling the loss of Nelson "no big deal" are grossly underestimating what he brought, in his role, when healthy...I think getting rid of a kid that has produced, again in his role, is the exact opposite of what this team should be doing. The Bills Offense clearly missed Nelson last season...He does make a difference when he's out there... Many on this board have been disagreeing with all kinds of decisions the Bills have made in the Buddy Nix regime...In hindsight, many of those folks were dead on correct...This Front Office, the one in charge right now, has been prone to poor evaluations of talent overall both on the current roster, and in the Draft...IMHO this is the exact type of poor decision this team continues to make in the Buddy Nix regime...I think, based on the past three years, the odds are pretty good that I come out right on this one too... If Nelson is healthy again he will produce for some team as the 3rd or 4th option...I think you can take that to the bank...Hopefully it's not NE, Miami, or the NY Jets...BTW...The Jets and Miami are desperate for WR's...Just saying... Good luck David... -
Fitz is not average...He's below average...His production stats may reach the average level at times...But the turnovers counteract that...He's a turnover machine...The most turnovers of ANY NFL QB in the last 3 years combined...The most!...And three years is a very good sample to judge from...If Fitz was more careful with the ball he would be average, or a little better...The fact that he's good for 1.5 turnovers per start on average makes him a below average QB...And it's not that hard to find a below average QB... The Bills tried to put Fitz in a better situation for his skills...And he was still a turnover machine...Not to mention the 2-3 passes per game that should have been intercepted...You, and the few stragglers left here, are overvaluing Fitz the exact same way Chan and Buddy did...You're hoping for something that a massive amount of career evidence says is impossible...Or at least very improbable...There is no reason to keep Fitz...The Bills can do much, much better...Easier said than done? Perhaps...But it's still true...

KOKBILLS replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well...I don't think he's mediocre whatsoever...If the Bills sign Nelson for more than a year, at less than $2 mil per, great! But, to me at least, it makes no sense to let him test the market at all...This team does not have the luxury of allowing players like Nelson to walk...They need every bit of proven production they can get...Especially redzone and 3rd down production at WR... -

Right because I'm really trying to be ultra-biased here...I'm framing things to make my point look better because I'm exactly that devilishly clever... Give me a freaking break dude...The numbers speak for themselves...The point is Nelson was better...Clearly better and more consistent before the injury... Are you one of those people that just sits around and plays devils advocate for the sake of playing devils advocate? Do you really believe in what your nit-picking?Or do you really, truly, believe that Jones and Nelson were about the same player for the Bills? I'm just curious... -
Bills to let David Nelson walk?
KOKBILLS replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really? That's interesting...Do you even bother researching? Or do you just generally get stuff wrong and roll with it?... In 3 years with the Bills Jones played in 35 games, and had 82 receptions for 882 yds...6 TD's total In the same three years David Nelson played in 32 Games, missed an entire Season, and had 94 receptions for 1042 yds, and 8 TD's...In his 2 healthy years (plus one game) Nelson accounted for 53 1st down catches to Jones 42... So...Anyway... -

Exactly...Well put... And I'll add that ANY Bills fan who is not looking at this Organization, and the moves it makes, without a bit of skepticism has not been paying much attention to anything over the past decade and then some...Buddy Nix is still in that office...He still has a say in decisions...Not sure how any Bills fan could give a Nix-lead Front office the benefit of any doubt...But maybe that's just me... -

Right, because the Bills always are... Like I said before...No one is saying Nelson is Megatron...But you don;t get better by letting players like (a healthy) David Nelson go... -

Well I'll give you that one...The whole girlfriend thing in Dallas was embarrassing...I could not even watch...I threw up in my mouth a bit... Still...I think Nelson has a ton of the competitive fire you speak of...This is a kid that was undrafted and worked his ass off to get where he got to...As far as general make-up goes, I'm not sure you can do much better than Nelson from an attitude standpoint...He's a hard working kid with a ton of intangibles... -

I guess it should be pointed out first that we still don't have any confirmation on this report...Starting to look like it could be bull...When they announced the Donald Jones decision they had already spoke with DJ...So there is that... Secondly, I just don't see how any Bills fan who is against letting Nelson walk is overvaluing the kid...He's a role player and everyone knows that...He's not a #1, or a #2 WR, on most any NFL team...What he is when healthy...And this part is ULTRA important...Nelson actually knows his role and PRODUCES in that role...On a team that is so full of underachievers I sometime wonder if we'll ever see winning football again, Nelson is clearly a beacon of hope...In that, simply, the guy goes out and does his job better than most everyone thought he could...Is he spectacular? No...Do you need guys like him to win in the NFL?...Absolutely you do...I don't see how you can overvalue a player like that...Even at the 2nd round tender you know EXACTLY what you are going to get with Nelson (again assuming the knee is good)...He's been rock solid since the first day he stepped into the role...32 1st Down receptions in 2011 as the Bills slot WR...His size makes him a mismatch for smaller DB's...And I'm kind of laughing at some of this "he's slow" talk I'm seeing in this thread because of all the Bills WR's Nelson manages to get WIDE open an awful lot...Sure he's not a track guy...But he's a very good route runner who has a feel for the passing game... I simply don't see how any team gets better by letting a guy like Nelson walk...Especially under the current RFA restrictions on Nelson...If he's a UFA and some team wants to pay him $5 million annually...OK...I can see letting him go...If the knee is not healing properly...OK...I get it...But cutting a healthy David Nelson loose to save $1-2 million cap dollars when all you have at WR is Stevie Johnson and TJ Graham??...Good grief...If it happens I'm thinking Buddy is definitely still in charge...Because it's a dumb, dumb move...Which is exactly what Nix is best at... -

Bills to let David Nelson walk?

Add to that Nelson is coming off an ACL...I think most teams would shy away just due to that...It's a stupid move not to tender him the minimum (assuming the knee is sound)...Just dumb... -
That's the exact same thing many were saying...right here...3 years ago about Fitz...How he was going to be great with time in Gailey's system...Some even compared his career at that point to Drew Brees... Forget about it...He's just not that good and, no offense, but you're way over-thinking it...Fitz is a turnover machine of epic portions...The Bills need to move on...Marrone is not good enough to make Fitz viable. And that's nothing against Maronne...He still may end up being a great Coach...But Gailey did as good a job as any coach can polishing that turd...Time to move on...
