  1. Completely OT, but Blomkamp was originally shooting footage for a movie based on Halo 3, but when Microsoft pulled the plug on the project, he did District 9 instead. Here's some footage that Blomkamp shot for the Halo movie - you can see a very similar feel between this project and District 9: http://youtu.be/5BaVb2TlWb0 As a complete Halo nerd, I would have loved to see what Blomkamp would have done with an entire Halo movie.
  2. Limbaugh is probably where I first heard the term being used, and yes, the term has been around long before FOX came along. Rob says it as well as anyone:
  3. No, I don't believe use of the term 'MSM' is accidental in any way. To the contrary, it appears obvious to me that it's quite intentional - FOX, Limbaugh, Drudge, etc use the term to position themselves as an alternative. When they all began, the three major broadcast networks were solidly mainstream, as were the NYT and WP. That's changed. People like you, me, and most others here all discriminate more than 'average' people in where we get our information from. There is still a large segment of the population that get their news from traditional sources like the networks, whose content still tends to slant to the left. Don't think that all the afforementioned right-leaning sources sprung into being to compete with NPR. I don't see how you draw the conclusion that use of the term 'Main Stream Media' implies that anyone is a victim, though. 'Partially informed' maybe, but 'victims'? No.
  4. If I gave the impression that I believe minimum wage is good for anything other than entry-level and/or unskilled labor, then I didn't mean to. You do touch on something that I believe very strongly and have said often: everybody should start out washing dishes, bussing tables, sweeping floors, or something similar in order to learn a little humility. I worked in restaurants for many years earning a fraction of what I make now, and it makes me appreciate what I have and the work it took to get here.
  5. Your penchant for stirring the pot and leaving has earned you a bit of a reputation as a 'drive-by' poster, but at least you're sticking around this time to follow up on your point, so I give you credit for that. Centrist and right-slanted media have indeed been on the increase over the last couple of decades, to the point where anyone can get their information from any point of view they wish. The three major broadcast networks, along with the NY Times and Washington Post, all remain primarily left in their leanings, and despite the popularity of other outlets (such as FOX), are still considered to be 'the mainstream', even if the reality of that is changing. It may be more correct to refer to them as 'traditional media outlets' or 'major news organizations', but we all know what people are talking about when they refer to the MSM.
  6. Why in hell is their government getting involved in providing wifi anyway?
  7. I don't suppose that it's ever occurred to you that technology actually reduces the need for laborers but increases the need for better paying, technical jobs to maintain the automation?
  8. Too late - he's already driven off. Actually, I'm surprised he stuck around long enough to post twice.
  9. I was hoping you'd say that you had read the book first, and that the movie didn't do it justice. That was how I felt, anyway.
  10. If you say so.
  11. Or, as I would likely do, put it in reverse and give them something to be angry about. You've got to admit it was funny, though.
  12. I'm somewhat familiar with Google Fiber's deployment plans and service options, since I work for their biggest competitor in this region. Aside from that, Net Neutrailty is a topic that deserves it's own thread.
  13. Okay, that makes sense. I was incorrectly assuming that they were all running to keep their seats.
  14. That's the bit that's confusing to me. Wouldn't they actually have to be elected, whether opposed or not?
  15. Maybe I'm missing something here, but if a term in the House is for two years, then how are they not all running for reelection every two years?
  16. That's the deciding factor for me, right there. The only games I really ever play are Halo (pretty much all of them) and South Park - The Stick Of Truth. I never had any issue with the RROD, but my brother did and they replaced it with a refurbished model.
  17. Under Harry Reid and his 'nuclear option', control of the Senate only requires 51 seats. If I was Mitch McConnell, I'd be tempted to leave that policy in place, or to adopt it if required to do so after the new Senate convenes.
  18. I can't say which is better since the last Play Station I had was the PS1, but I just upgraded from an XBOX 360 to an XBOX One and am enjoying it so far. I don't know if you can play earlier game releases on the PS4, but one negative about the XBOX One is that you can't play games for the 360 on it. On the other hand, the anniversary edition of Halo 2 is pretty impressive.
  19. Were there any House members that didn't run this time?
  20. That wasn't really a bear - it was actually Gunnar Hansen in a bear suit.
  21. I'm no authority, but I was under the impression that bears will avoid areas inhabited by humans, but will also hunt & kill humans they encounter in their own environment. I remember way back in my Boy Scout days being told to not bring or use any soap, deodorant, after shave, etc on camping trips because the scent will attract bears. We never camped anywhere that had anything other than the typical eastern black bear, and I never saw one in the wild. As far as Grizzlies are concerned, I always thought that if you saw one in the wild, and it saw you, that you were as good as dead.
