  1. If you're saying that everyone who downloads something would have purchased it if it weren't available to download, then you're delusional. Why are you comparing distribution with "consumption?" Your argument was that downloading a CD reduced the value of the 1,000,000 CDs by 1... Therefore everyone who downloads a CD should be found liable for the theft of a physical CD because the value is the same. The person who is distributing the illegal copies can get a greater penalty, but my quote was specifically referencing CONSUMING - download vs stealing.
  2. That isn't accurate at all -- most people download music and software because it's convenient, and if they didn't download it, they would never purchase it. But even if we accept your premise as true, how do you explain the massive penalties for downloading vs stealing? "For stealing the DVD you could face no more than up to 1 year imprisonment and up to a $100,000 fine; for downloading the same material you could face statutory damages of up to $3,300,000, costs and attorney's fees (ie: the other guy's attorneys), as well as up to 1 year imprisonment, and up to a $100,000 fine."
  3. The analogy holds up just fine. The artist has 1,000,000 CDs. I take one. He now only has 999,999 CDs. He has less than he had before. If instead of stealing the CD, I simply download the songs off the album -- he still has 1,000,000 CDs.
  4. Actually, there's a HUGE difference. Would you rather I make a copy of a painting you did, or would you rather I steal your car? In the first case, you still have the painting. In the second case, you need to buy a new car.
  5. I'm been flamed for saying this before, but it's a very important point -- STEALING IS NOT THE SAME AS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. Downloading a Kid Rock song is not the same as stealing a pair of pants. Heck, downloading a Kid Rock song is not the same as stealing a Kid Rock CD. Ironically, you can get in FAR more trouble downloading a song (infringement) than stealing the CD. That's because the laws in the country were not written with any concept of digital distribution. The laws are completely broken, but the RIAA (and, to a lesser extend, MPAA) lobbies are far too strong for that to ever change. Penalties: http://offtheshelf.nowis.com/index.cfm?ID=5 There's a very long post in the comments here that is interesting reading: http://www.tenreasonswhy.com/weblog/archiv...nfringment.html Flame me if you want, but I'm right.

  9. I had a friend in high school (back in the early 90s) who looked just like Al -- without trying. There were a couple of times when people would even come up to him and say that. Good times.
  10. There's still a couple of drive-in theater's in the Twin Cities area.
  11. Then you have the vendor send you a new machine and restore the backups onto it, shipping the bomb-laden server to the vendor or the bomb squad.
  12. Either the story is poorly written (likely) or the rest of the IT admins there are complete morons (also likely). There's always a way to gain access if you have physical access to a system.
  13. One of these days you'll "grow up."
  14. Not quite because of kids like LA suggested, but we do like to use our Food Saver a lot - so buy in bulk and store the extra in the freezer. Whenever we visit Buffalo, my grandmother makes me a couple of trays of homemade lasagna and I bring home 100-150 wings to freeze for football season. In addition, my in-laws live on a lake and catch a lot of fresh fish that we like to keep. So while we don't really NEED one, it'd be handy - right now 80% of our freezer is filled with lasagna and wings... Doesn't leave room for other stuff!
  15. "If the energy bills are roughly the same, I'm fine with the thing only lasting 8 years instead of 10 - the convenience would be worth it." You're just stressed out because you're afraid the Cows will udderly dominate. It's understandable.
  16. Learn to read - my question wasn't about how long it would last, it's about how much extra energy (if any) it will consume. If the energy bills are roughly the same, I'm fine with the thing only lasting 8 years instead of 10 - the convenience would be worth it.
  17. Hey all, I'm thinking about buying a chest freezer to put in the garage. It's an attached garage but has no climate control - and therefore gets pretty hot in the summer. How well will a chest freezer be able to keep the food frozen? And how much extra can I expect to pay in energy bills? I could probably put it in the basement as well, but that wouldn't be as convenient... I'm assuming it'd use less energy during the summer though, right? Thoughts? Thanks!
  18. Sorry - I did look for some key words, but the title wasn't very good (not your fault).
  19. This is the correct answer. Next time you're out and the dog's barking non-stop, call the non-emergency police number and tell them about it. If they're not the right people to talk to, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

His crew assessed 12 penalties for 95 yards against the Bills, compared to five penalties for 43 yards against the Falcons. Bills tight end Jay Riemersma disputed a critical pass-interference penalty called against him. "The guy I was blocking actually told me, 'You didn't hold me, I tripped,'" Riemersma told the Buffalo News
  21. I love my Amazon.com card. I shop at Amazon a lot, so using the card gives me 3% back there and 1% back everywhere else. The best part is that there's no yearly limit (a lot of cards limit your yearly bonus to $300). Every 2500 points you get ($2500 spent on non-Amazon purchases) gives you a $25 Amazon gift certificate.

  23. I've said it before and I'll say it again - the EFF is doing great work but is largely overlooked. Say what you will about them, they're always on the front line trying to do the "right thing."
  24. I'll second this! I've seen him 3 or 4 times - and all of the shows have been awesome. He came into the crowd at one of the shows, singing one of his "love songs." It was a riot.
