The unemployment rate as reported in the media is a bit of a pharse. Doesn't take into account underemployment, wages paid out and labor force participation. We would do ourselves a favor if greater detail was reported. Any Presidential candidate or President wanting to improve an economy would love to have inherited the situation Obama did. The only way was up and the issues that caused the recession were temporary and not difficult to fix. Historically speaking the recovery was the weakest in history. Pretty lackluster when you look at GDP growth, wage growth and the increase in debt and taxation. Yes and what Trumps wants is the capacitor shipped from Colorado to Arlington Texas and the circuit board and control unit assembled there.

Well you shouldn't buy the Audi on the basis that it'll likely cost you a fortune to maintain/repair after the warranty ends.

Neil Gorsuch - Nominee to the Supreme Court
keepthefaith replied to Nanker's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Agree. We'll get there as a society at some point IMO. Yes, that process should conclude in seconds, like going under for surgery. -
Not surprised. Since the election dem pols and media have been preaching health care doom for many even without seeing a plan from republicans. Kinda like the supreme court nominee protests last night with people lining up even before Trump's pick was announced. Gotta give the left some points for consistency though.

What number is he and who is the sponsor?

Neil Gorsuch...Should Get Nominated to SCOTUS

Ginsberg, good lord she might be too senile to decide to retire and just healthy enough to outlast Trump's next couple years. -

We can't employ all the people here now and social service cost is through the roof. Immigration of low skilled people needs to be reduced. Make it risky to employ illegal folks and the magnet is much less powerful. Our labor supply of low skilled workers is too big. When we run a job ad here for an entry level operations job we routinely get 200+ applicants in a week. -

So Chicago, a sanctuary city has well north of 100K illegal immigrants residing there and over 400K statewide. Many of them no doubt are in low-skilled jobs. How about we get rid of most of them and then hold a job fair in the poorer Chicago neighborhoods where teen and young people unemployment is something on the order of 40%? !@#$ing mayor is a complete idiot defending the illegal folks right to be there and to work while the south side of his city is falling apart, lacks jobs and people are shooting other people 5+ times a day. !@#$ing no-brainer. USA accepts 1 million a year in legal immigrants while the workforce participation rate is at something like a 40 year low. Uh no. -

Agree. The current training staff doesn't have a very good record. -
So are we solving any race issues yet?

When we start arguing about the best way to secure the border and greatly reduce illegal immigration we are making real progress. A wall alone won't be enough and there may be effective means without deploying a wall. -

I look forward to these sanctuary cities resisting and Trump exerting ever-increasing pressure on them until they cave. -
Is Trump Mentally Ill?
keepthefaith replied to Trump_is_Mentally_fit's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Yes, instead we should elect people the way dems elect their candidate for president. Let the people vote but then have "super electors" weigh in to make the ultimate choice. That way the populus doesn't make a mistake, right? The Dem primary voters almost put Bernie in there. Good thing that didn't happen. -

No actually the number of people in the country illegally is at it's highest level ever or very close. I'm sure you recognize the merits of a secure border and an immigration system where those that enter our country do so in a manner consistent with the law. -

Trump's leadership team

I'd like to see the return of the 60 vote threshold along with Senators from both parties voting based on the merit of bills or appointees rather than strict partisan party lines. Unfortunately the chances of us seeing much less partisanship are about none. -

Howard, you know how that sounds to Americans looking for jobs, right ? . So where will they find 10,000 hire-able refugees? In Germany or England or France to work in their stores over there? -

Yes and one of my sons (white) was a sprinter in high school and an Illinois State Champion and that was without wutang. The post about giving white guys a head start in 100m was meant to be a joke playing off a stereotype but I was questioning your comment that we should have different standards for different races? Really?
-
Adjusting standards based on race? Like giving white guys a head start in a 100 meter race?

You would do much better in this discussion if you identified very specifically racial issues one by one. To say you're all over the place in this thread would be an understatement. My own views focused on education.... The constant play of the race card in the media, among politicians and in society causes many to turn a deaf ear to cries of racism. Best thing we can do as Americans is to never make racism accusations without at least strong evidence of support. Next best thing we can do is to stop separating groups of people by race in news reports, political campaigns and everyday facets of life. Both of these habits (racism cries and analysis by racial groups) is divisive. Let's also stop asking people for their race on applications for admittance to schools and colleges, government job and contact applications and applications/registrations of any kind. Seriously, stop this practice. As for all the "racial disparities" that are publicized, It's time to look past the racial element of such disparities and look at the underlying causes. I'll give you the tale of 2 nearby school districts. In a suburb of Chicago there is a school district with a policy of discouraging teachers from assigning homework. This is from their superintendent who has explained that their kids do not live in environments conducive to doing homework. This is a district of mostly minority students from lower income families. They all have computers as their district was given federal grants for Chromebooks for every student and they have at least one parent. Nonetheless, that is the district policy. Same district has a policy of not failing any student and that includes individual tests. If a student fails, they retake the test up to 3-4 times and if they still fail the teachers are instructed to assign a passing grade. Also students in this district regularly call the white teachers racists. The second school district neighbors the first one also a suburb and is more affluent and majority white. The policies are different, students sink or swim. Students get a lot of homework and parents for the most part make damn sure the homework is done and the parent expectations for these kids is much different. Most students are pushed by both parents, teachers and peers. The grades and test scores of district number 2 are much better than district 1. In fact district 2 produces a couple dozen national merit scholarship finalists each year and most are not white students. The winners are among all races. Now at this stage of life, it's not likely that these kids from either district have often been victims of racism but the social and economic outcomes for both groups will prove to be very different. Parenting, behavior and lots of small decisions each day make the difference. The single greatest failure by Obama and his wife who appear to be fine examples of good parenting is not to have driven this point home continuously during his Presidency. Instead he constantly played the race and victim cards. Good for him politically, bad for his party and bad for many who supported him.
