Mexico will elect a new President next week. Fresh start. We can certainly pressure Mexico economically if we want to. Discourage tourism, trade (which Trump is already doing) and make it tougher for people to send money back home. On the more cooperative level, Mexico has done a terrible job of developing their own economy. They are rich in natural resources and have a very large low cost labor force with the largest market (us) in their back yard. We could probably help them to develop their economy with a partnership of sorts.

Diplomatic engagement.

I know, this can be complicated. At some point you have to get some cooperation from the government of Mexico and Central American countries. That should include getting Mexico to stop allowing people to pass through their country on their way to the U.S. Right now they're laughing at us.

The problem is that there is a "process" of hearing cases for people who cross illegally and that process is very slow. Courts in nearly all facets are dreadfully slow. It's the culture of the legal industry. We should not arrest and charge these people. They should simply be immediately deported.

I don't think it backfired at all for the MSM. The vast majority of people IMO don't take the time to become truly informed on big news issues or the nation's truly big issues. It can be time consuming and not all that interesting. When print media and TV media and I'll throw in K-12 schools and universities beat the leftist drum day in and day out, it has a huge impact on public opinion as most hear and believe what is being reported. They are absolutely shaping public opinion and especially on this issue over the past couple weeks. The Democrat party would barely exist IMO if a majority of media outlets and schools reported the facts, the real math on the various "issues" in the news cycle. Instead we get coordinated biased reporting in huge doses right on cue with what the likes of Pelosi and Schumer are looking for. Been going on for decades although never more than today. Trump does a terrible job (as have most Presidents) of educating the public on issues and his policy positions. He could speak to Americans on TV and layout in detail his case for things literally in presentation style. The facts are on his side. Instead he tweets tidbits of information which don't at all move public opinion. His base eats it up but beyond that he scores no points or even worse scores negative points. For a business guy he absolutely sucks at presenting information. With a little work on his part and the part of his staff, he could much better wage the war of public opinion. For those that say he's outsmarting the left and playing the media for fools, I say he might be here and there but the majority of voters will never recognize it and won't be moved to his side because the truth is hard to find.

Our laws on this matter are so convoluted. The simplest and most effective thing to do with people who enter illegally would be to let them use the bathroom, give them some water and maybe a meal send them back to where they originated in daylight hours. It really shouldn't be more complicated than that.

Actually American children are detained and held by non-relatives frequently - in foster homes. In foster homes or in group foster homes the children of some incarcerated parents are housed and their movements are restricted by courts and the supervising adults - FOR YEARS. Even worse is that incarcerated parents can be ruled as unfit parents with no rights to resume parenting their children upon their release. Even worse some of these kids are then adopted by the foster parents and the biological parent may then have no right to visit their children until they are adults. The courts rule based on what they feel is best for the children. Similarly courts have determined that children entering our country illegally with adults are best supervised in relatively comfortable detention areas, not able to roam freely or unsupervised and not in a cell with the adult criminals.

This is where I'm headed. Don't have time or the know-how to make a bunch of short-term trades. Have done well on several in the past few years but so could have a blind squirrel in the recent market. We will be due for some correction or at the very least malaise as this expansion becomes more likely to end each and every month as we go forward. With single digit years for me until retirement or semi-retirement, I'm not willing to risk weathering another big correction or negative economic event. Would rather be guilty of getting out a bit early and have the opportunity to move back in on the back side. Trump has definitely helped to extend the life of this good economic stretch IMO with tax cuts and a business friendly message but I don't think there are any more economic levers to be pulled and we're almost in the longest expansion ever right now. To the OP, if you're not truly skilled and devoted and willing to take the risk in trying to beat the market, you might be best to invest in an S&P index fund. Not many can honestly claim that over time they do better themselves or even with professional help. That and there are good investments outside of the stock market. I'm heavier now in real estate and that will serve me quite well in the future, even in a down economy.

Yeah, the smugglers/traffickers know the rules. If unaccompanied minors get admitted, that's who shows up at the border. If the practice changes and adults with children are then admitted, then that's what the border patrol sees. If those loopholes are closed but then anyone with a dog is permitted, we're gonna see packs of people with a dog and the animal rights people will be screaming if the dogs are separated from their "owners".

They become unaccompanied after they are separated from their adult parents/relatives/smugglers.

Reasonably said, but the adults entering the country illegally are taking the risk and choosing separation. Many are arriving with minors because they've known that in the recent past they were given preferential treatment. They are free to leave the country with the kids in tow. Just like jobs being a magnet to come here illegally, we encourage more illegal crossings if we are offering friendly border service.

That's a bandaid. We need to get to a point where we can legally and effectively prevent as many illegal entries as possible and turn people away immediately when that occurs.

I agree with the President, they should not have due process rights for illegal entry. That law needs to be changed.

The adults that are being detained all have the option to be re-united with their children (if they are their children) if they choose to leave the country. That means that these parents are making the decision to enter the country unlawfully and choosing not to leave with their kids.

I think it's only a matter of time before former President Obama and AG Lynch break their silence on this. Certainly they aren't going to let the minions at the FBI take the fall for their dirty political work, work that they certainly directed. Nobody of Obama's high character would sit back and let that happen.

How about a large reciprocating saw to hack off Mexico and Central America? Cheaper than a wall and a lot less ongoing maintenance and the new beachfront property will generate a lot in property and hospitality taxes.
