While TN was not super impressive, which stud team will rise out of the AFC South?

Indy is snakebitten, Jax is a season or two (and QB?) away, and Houston lacks a lot talent wise

TN almost makes it in by default

And the G-Men were missing their two best assumed DE (Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari). Impressive showing by that undermanned defense.

Curious, were Thibodeaux and Ojulari both healthy scratches??  If so that's surprising...

how much better run defense do you all think we have compared to last year? this game scares me the second i saw it on the schedule

After Thursday nights performance by our entire team, coupled with Tennessee crapping the bed today vs Daboll and co, fear is the furthest thing from my mind right now.

I am someone you'd call cautiously optimistic, and I believe Buffalo will absolutely eviscerate the Titans on Monday night....

I know it will be a consideration on Thursday I really hope it cools down

I may be in the minority, but I'd MUCH rather be too hot than too cold.  Maybe it's because I'm getting old or something, but I haven't been to a Bills game past October since the first time i brought my wife to Buffalo for the Monday night Bills vs Browns game on November 17th, 2008.

Sadly, the temp was actually 33 degrees at kickoff, yet I had on long johns, a big ol parka, scarf, hat, gloves, I had hand warmers in my gloves, hand warmers in my boots.....

    And I was STILL miserable.

PR/KR can also be a DB or RB. Would like to see Cook try a few.

Agree with you there.  According to all the reports coming out of camp so far, they say Cook has some eye-opening speed.  Even remember one person saying he appears to be the fastest guy the Bills have had in the backfield in quite some time.  Not only is that refreshing to hear, but it also gives me optimism that we might finally have some players back there that can finally push McKenzie, at least to a degree.  I'm sure McKenzie is plenty motivated to win the PR job, but there's really noone amongst the group, to me at least, that is making McKenzie lose any sleep over.  Plus, it's a dangerous position to play, opening the player up to SIGNIFICANT injury every time he touches the football.  So I'd be willing to bet good money that McKenzie ain't dyin to "win" that role.  I'd bet the house(Winnebago), the car(1968 Pinto hatchback), AND to make the pot even sweeter, throw in my ENTIRE life savings(all $ 47 dollars and thirteen cents). High rollin baby.  All jokes aside, this is already shaping up to be the best off-season in my life, and we haven't played a LICK of football.  God is so good, ALL the time.....

Now let's play some football!!!  GO BUFFALO!!

I think you sort of implied the answer. Which is anyone who can hold onto the ball is an upgrade. We have a dynamic offense - I'm not taking return skills at the cost of ball security issues.

I get you.  And I'm understanding what you, Shaw66, and several others have stated in that you'd prefer to just play it safe back there and not risk turning it over deep in our own territory.

I guess the risk taker in me wants someone back there who is a threat to take it to the house the moment the ball is (securely) in his hands.  And to me, that guy is McKenzie.  Stevenson, for all his world class speed, just looks awkward and uncomfortable returning punts to me.  Something oddly unnatural about him at the position.  Perhaps Shakir can be the guy.

But Shaw really broke it down for me in explaining how the way the game is set up today, there really just isn't much of an opportunity for big punt returns anymore, so with that said, I'm happy to have Hyde back there as the safe option until someone else can prove themselves reliable enough to earn the full time job...

  6. 1 minute ago, That's No Moon said:

Until someone else demonstrates they will catch the ball reliably I want Micah Hyde to FC everything and be done with it.

And yes, Hyde is probably the only one who has earned McDermott's trust back there.  Two things though regarding Hyde returning punts/kicks: 1, like you said, 95% of the time it's going to be a fair catch, and 2, do we really want to put our all-pro safety out there and risk exposing him to injury?  I know he's a very smart veteran player but things happen....

    Yes, I believe it was.

Some guys give me confidence when I see them back there.

    McKenzie doesn't.

I definitely respect your opinion.  Amongst our other contenders at the position, who would you like to see win the job?  Or more importantly, who do you feel represents a better option/has more potential back there?

Flashbacks to our talking points last season...when it was also a bad idea. I love McKenzie but don't want him anywhere near the returner position.

It seems like many many posters on here agree with you....and when I think about that fumble against the Colts, particularly with not a soul near him and him just coughing it up like that, it certainly doesn't inspire confidence, but I just feel like maybe this can be the year he grows and puts the yips behind him and grabs that PR/KR position by the throat and doesn't let go OR give anyone else the chance to unseat him again....I guess I'm just that eternal optimist.  But in all seriousness, I only feel this way about him because I feel like he has the potential to be the most dynamic back there.  Amongst our other contenders, who represents an upgrade at the position over McKenzie?

McKenzie's 8 regular season fumbles on ST's in his brief season and a piece in Denver was one of the worst stretches a player has been allowed to have as a returner.    He fumbled a bunch more in the preaseasons too.   You can't give that dude much of a leash.........he's an all-time-worst kinda' fumbler.

Dang, I didn't realize he fumbled THAT many times.... sheesh.   I agree with you on McDermott needing to keep him on a short leash, but I'm praying maybe he's put that behind him, because when the ball is in his hands, he's electric....his speed alone adds an extra element to the offense....

Question, was it McKenzie who fumbled the kickoff vs the Colts, when nobody touched him?  I can't remember if that was him or someone else.  I just remember how much of a momentum killer it was, and felt like it basically ended the game for us at that point...

Lots of people talking that Josh is MVP, but there is this other group of folk that want the Longjevity before they will accept a players accomplihments. Valid point, Aaron Rogers is the guy that everyone points to as the Incumbent, some say Mahomes, both Legit.

Today I had to watch Aarons most clutch plays, walking away convinced, Josh might be the most cluch player I have ever seen at QB. The clutch plays from Rodgers were solid, but the dude has a serious O-Line. Mahomes is amaing, good luck if they have 1st and goal, inside the 10. Mahomes might have a slight edge on Allen when it comes to short, shovel passes inside the 10 and the dude makes it happen all over right? Watching Allen be clutch throwing deep AF, I dont think I have ever seem more carnival crazy throws than this dude makes on the regular.

Allen is better than Mahomes and Rogers and that is effin that!

    Go Bills~!

I for one, appreciate your enthusiasm my friend 🙂

I think it's safe to say Josh Allen has already cemented himself as a clutch QB. Hell, last year's playoffs alone should have silenced ANY doubters who disagreed and tried to argue that Allen is anything but clutch.  Dude has ice water in his veins no question.  I'm just glad football season is finally here.  This has been the longest off-season in my life!!

I hope you have your popcorn ready my friend!

I don’t think Josh Allen will even reach his peak until he’s like 32.  I think the game will be ultra slow to him by then.  OMG just think about that.

Jesus Christ that is a scary effing thought.  You know for as much as I love Allen, love reflecting on his past seasons, thinking about how he just keeps getting better year after year, how much more dangerous he's becoming, I not once sat and thought, "man, this guy hasn't even come close to reaching his full potential."

We're talking other worldly.   Physically-wise, I don't believe he has an equal.  Cerebrally, I would say Peyton Manning.  But when his career is all said and done, I shiver when I think about what Josh Allen can accomplish.

Regular readers will recall I like to do this thread about this time every year, as we enter camp, let's have some BOLD predictions for 2022. I always do eight in total, 4 NFL wide and 4 Bills specific. My best year I nailed 5 of the 8. Last year I am going to give myself 1 and a half - I correctly predicted Carson Wentz would lose his job as the Colts Quarterback (which he might not have done during the season but they traded him as soon as possible thereafter) and I had Matt Milano to go to the pro-bowl and garner all pro votes. Well he did not go to the pro-bowl but he did garner 1 vote for AP all pro.

So here we go for 2022:

    NFL wide

    • The Cincinnati Bengals will MISS the playoffs
    • The New York Jets will finish 2nd in the AFC East
    • Christian Watson will have more yards and more touchdowns than Davante Adams
    • Justin Herbert will win the MVP but the Chargers will be 1 and done in the playoffs

    Bills specific

    • Kaiir Elam to equal Jairus Byrd's team rookie interception record with 9
    • James Cook to lead Bills running backs in combined touchdowns (rushing and receiving)
    • Dawson Knox to be voted as an all-pro (at least 2nd team all pro honours)
    • The Buffalo Bills to lead the league in sacks

There are mine, flame away and add your own!

Love em!  You weren't kidding, you went big AND bold my friend!  Swing for the fences right??  Okay here's mine:

    NFL Wide:

    1. Deshaun Watson will be suspended 6 games, upon his first game returning he will suffer a season ending injury. The Cleveland Browns will win 2 games total.

    2. The New Orleans Saints will win the NFC South, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will miss the playoffs entirely.

    3. Kenny Pickett will win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

    4. Josh Allen will win league MVP.

    Bills specific:

    1.  Gabriel Davis, not Stefon Diggs, will lead the team in receptions, yards, AND receiving TD's.

    2. James Cook will finish the season as the number one RB.

    3. Von Miller will record 14 1/2 sacks.

    4.  The Buffalo Bills will FINALLY hoist the Lombardi trophy, beating the Dallas Cowboys.  Josh Allen is named Super Bowl MVP after throwing for over 300 yards and 4 TD's, and rushing for 76 yards and another TD.  I am arrested for multiple charges of drunk and disorderly conduct and indecent exposure for getting caught running butt naked down Chippewa with a Bills flag in one hand and a Guiness in the other.

Most likely Crowder is still learning the complex offense

Can certainly see that being the case.  I was very pleased with the Crowder signing, and believe he is a significant upgrade from Beasley.  However, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have high hopes for McKenzie this year, and am pulling for him to nail down both the slot receiver position AND full time PR/KR duties.  His speed is undeniable, and I feel like he really turned it on towards the end of the regular season.  That game against the Pats he flat out destroyed every DB lined up against him, and IMO he truly earned Josh's trust in him.

If in fact he does become our full time KR/PR, and then I assume Diggs, Davis, Crowder, Shakir all lock up roster spots, who's on the outside looking in?  And how many receivers will the Bills carry?

We also went undefeated the rest of the season and had dominant offensive performances all the way up to the KC heartbreaker once we started running the football consistently.  So I fully expect our run game to be more involved throughout the year.

So as good as I believe Knox is and will be, I’m not seeing a big statistical jump just solely by the amount of weapons we have and my expectation of the run game being more consistently involved throughout the season.

Excellent points regarding the team's success once we both committed to and established our run game.  I feel like we have great to elite level talent in our WR's, and, JMO, adding Crowder to replace Beasley is a significant upgrade.  Plus I fully expect McKenzie to push for more playing time as well considering how he's earned Josh's trust.

With all that said, I would not be the least bit surprised to see Buffalo display a much more balanced offense this year, which fully supports your statement that Knox's numbers could take a dip this season.  We have a ton of talented mouths to feed, and I have no doubt Josh is ready to spread the wealth.

You’re all probably right about him not asking for the number, but I could have sworn I read it.

Regardless of that he is 19.  Knowing what Gwynn meant to San Diego and to SDSU, my guess is it has something to do with his selection.

Can certainly understand that being the case.  Unarguably one of the best pure hitters MLB has ever seen.

Hey maybe when it's all said and done we will remember Araiza as one of the best pure punters ever to grace the NFL....

7 of the 9 single digit numbers are currently taken. I suppose they could have given him #1 or #4, but I'm guessing they're just going to give him #3, #5, or #9 after Training Camp so long as he wins the job. Or maybe he just prefers #19. Odd numbers on players are all the rage these days.

I don't believe he requested the number from McKenzie. I get the feeling from McKenzie's social media posts about it that he chose #6. I don't envision a 6th Round Rookie Punter approaching a vet of McKenzie's stature on the team and asking for their number. That would take some serious balls.

Agree 100%.  The only other thing I could possibly envision is he paid McKenzie a chunk for it?  I've heard of players approaching a player who's jersey number they want and offering them cash for the right to acquire their jersey number...but you're right, as a rookie, 6th round pick no less, approaching McKenzie for his # would take some brass cohones....

All things being equal, each of the NFL's 32 teams has a roughly 3% chance of winning the Super Bowl.  But things (players, coaches, injuries, etc) are not equal.  So maybe the best teams are up around 10%.  There is too much parity and uncertainty (what if Allen gets hurt?) to give any current NFL club much more than a 1-in-10 chance.

Brady is widely considered the GOAT as a player.  Belichick is considered by some the GOAT as a coach.  In their 19 years together, they won the Lombardi a remarkable 6 times.  And that's why I don't get the Super-Bowl-or-Bust crowd.  Even the greatest NFL dynasty ever only earned the Lombardi once every three tries.  While we have a great squad this year, the odds of the Bills winning the trophy this year are not in our favor.

So I take a longer view.  If the Belichick-Brady era could produce 6 SB victories, how many can the McD-Allen era?   I'm hoping at least one and maybe more!

    Well said sir.  Well said.

While I am in pretty much 100% agreement with basically everything you said, particularly regarding parity in the NFL, and so many other factors(including luck) coming into play for a team to win it all, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have the highest hopes I've ever had for our team this year, ever, and anything short of a Lombardi trophy would be considered a disappointment in my book.    This team is just friggin stacked, and we have, at least to me, the most dynamic, most talented quarterback in the league under center.

Let me be the first to admit, I am a complete wuss when it comes to cold weather games.  The last cold weather game I went to was back on the Monday night game vs the Browns, I want to say back in 08.  We bought 40 yard line seats about 15 rows from the field.  The temp at gametime was a balmy 32.  I had a thermal top on, thermal bottom, nice, big winter coat, hat, had hand warmers in my gloves, hand warmers in my boots, and I was STILL MISERABLE.  Couldn't even much enjoy the game.  It was back then I swore I would only attend games in September and October......

God just reading that makes me feel womanly....my wife wouldn't even attempt to go with me to the game so I took my 23 year old cousin who was in college at Niagara University at the time.  At least he enjoyed himself.

I would hope the Bills can get better running the ball with Singletary so Allen doesn't have to run as much as those shots can take their toll. Plus Allen throwing the ball is the Bills biggest weapon. Now if a play breaks down and Allen has to run then go for it. I would also add in the playoffs then everything should be on the table including Allen running as they are trying to close the deal on a Super Bowl championship. Over a long 17 game season I would prefer Singletary doing the heavy lifting when it comes to running the ball.

    Well said sir....well said.
