He has an agenda against Elam.  If he struggles, he's going to bring it up.  If he plays well, you won't hear from him.

HOLY SMOKES!!!!  Dayum that is an impressive stat, especially considering I was fully enamored with Sauce Gardner and fantasized about us getting him.

Yeah, Elam is gonna be just fine.  Dare I say I could easily see him being our CB1 one day in the not-so-distant future.  Kids got the prototype size, great speed, solid tackler, good in run support.

    Thank you.

A bit, yes. He was picked on yesterday by a QB in his 1st ever start. Doesn’t mean he won’t get better, but do have a healthy dose of concern for him.

No concern whatsoever for Elam.  The kid is a gamer all day, and let's not overlook the fact that he's got a good head on his shoulders.  A first round pick, who gets bumped for a sixth rounder to start the season despite a solid training camp.  Does he gripe and moan, no?  He puts his head down, keeps working, and plays darn well when his number is called.  Yeah he was picked on yesterday, but I didn't think he was abysmal by any stretch.  Not only that, he snagged his first pick on a pass that he was supposed to intercept.  Let's not forget Tre had a few bumps and bruises his rookie year as well.  I anticipate nothing but great things ahead for number 24.

I don’t know if he would be open to it, but I would LOVE to convince Fitzpatrick to come out of retirement and be the back up.

Fitz could legitimately keep a season alive in the case of Allen missing a few games.

No, I was not attempting to do that.

Some people are able to compartmentalize and focus on what needs to get better while enjoying a win.

    Others don’t have that ability.

Count me among those who do not have a problem with your topic.  I agree with Meatloaf in the sense that yes, we blew Pittsburgh out of the building, but I also would've liked to have seen more out of Keenum.  Granted, it was mop up duty AND McDermott had called off the dogs to the tune of pretty much the entire starting offense, but let's be honest, Keenum didn't do anything to inspire confidence.  I'm much more willing to discount his performance because of the circumstances, but boy he underachieved.  And as much as I love Fitzy, I simply do not believe he has anything left in the tank to be a legit QB2 anymore.

Here's to JA staying super healthy and injury free the entire season (runs and knocks on some wood).

It's pretty crazy that this week's and last's week game came down to a failed attempt (both plays amounted to negative yards) on 2nd and Goal from the 1. If you're at 2nd and Goal from the 1, you expect to punch it in and the odds are that you will.

We all know the scene last week. Josh, because of having a different center in there, had to be in shotgun. The result, a play that loses a couple yards. 3rd and Goal, incomplete to Diggs (almost intercepted). 4th and Goal, the short and incomplete pass to Lil Dirty. Bills lose.

This week. 2nd and Goal from the 1 and a MONSTER stop by Milano (IMO, this was the defensive play of the game) that resulted in a four yard loss. 3rd and Goal, LJ is stopped at around the 2 or 3 yard line. 4th and Goal, the amazing INT by Jordan Power. Bills storm down the field, win the game and all is right in Bills land.

Side note - the Bills caused seven negative plays against Baltimore who is the #4 ranked offense (they were #4 at the start of the game, that ranking could be different now). That's some incredible defense we're playing especially with some significant pieces still out.

What a great game and what a play by Matt Milano. So glad that we were on the winning side of this "2nd and Goal at the 1" tale. Go Bills!

Couldn't agree with you more regarding the way the D played, still missing so many significant players.  It's downright scary.

Kudos to Von for getting another sack today and just barely missing another....I know it's only four games but in my opinion, the way he's playing I'm almost expecting double digit sacks, quite possibly even more.

  5. Great write-up as always, thank you Shaw.  Kudos to the team for finally getting the W in a close, one score game.  I know it's been said often but McDermott and Frazier have been excellent at second half adjustments, and this team came out in the second half on a mission.  I mean they shut the Ravens out, big time.  In the 2nd half, Lamar Jackson had 36 yards passing and two ints.  The defense played some of the most disciplined, yet aggressive and swarming football I've seen so far this young season, and that's a seriously scary thing considering how many players we are still missing or are less than 100%!

Praying Poyer is fine, the guy proves every time he's out on the football field he deserves to be paid.  He's a true difference maker.

Coaching gets an A+ for that final drive, along with Allen knowing exactly where the first down marker was.  Clock management at its finest.

What a victory.  Home for Pittsburgh, where I fully expect us to make life hell on the rookie QB, have no mercy, and run the Steelers out of the stadium hopefully by halftime.

I have a little observation about Cook from warmups today. I was in the front row by the Bills endzone where they were doing their pregame stuff.

Cook and McKenzie came out around 12:25 with the kickers. McKenzie was shagging punts and kickoffs. Cook was milling around, doing nothing. Just chill. He watched a practice kickoff land right at his feet, he made no attempt to catch it. Mckenzie sorta looked at cook with his hands up like “dude, cmon, make an effort”.  I commented to my son, look at this guy Cook, he’s just slouching around making no effort to catch a practice punt or a KO.  I’m not even sure why he came out early. He talks to no one, he shows zero energy or juice. When he finally gets the ball in a game he drops it. I just don’t see a reason why he’s on the active roster right now.  I’m a firm believer you play how you practice. and he should’ve been handling the football at every opportunity in warm ups.

To hear that is definitely concerning.  However, count me among those who feel like it's still way too early to label him a bust, or give up on him.  Yes, his fumble game one was a costly one, and his drop today was as well.  I feel like had he made that catch he could've gained some serious yardage.  But let's be honest, it's pretty obvious from the few touches he HAS gotten, he's shown a real burst of speed, that extra gear that both Motor AND Moss lack, which is reason for excitement.  I don't doubt the fumble and the drop may have shaken his confidence, but I believe that once the game slows down for him, and 2)the coaches give him more touches, that he still has the potential to be our RB1.

The medical community has stated CTE is not yet fully understood. In that most comprehensive study in 2017, 110 of 111 brains showed signs of CTE. Clearly not all 110 of those individuals went rogue. So at what point do we say any outlier behaviors are statistically significant. Its hard to prove.

Correlation and causation are two completely different things.

Under your take, Brady should be Jeffrey Dahmer by now after this hit.

As we all saw in the Rams game, our D line, when healthy, is so dominating it gives Frasier the luxury of getting supreme penetration with only our front four.  We wouldn't even need to blitz Jackson.

Praying we get Oliver and Phillips back for this game.

Not so sure of this. It's way too early to project. If injuries linger or get worse the Bills might very well fall back into the pack. I'm getting a little tired of hearing how the Bills are the best team in the league. After today's lose and so many injuries who knows what's gonna happen. Certainly, the Bills were not even close to being the best team. Injuries are crippling the Bills. Could it be an injury riddled year?

    Friend,

We were missing one starting CB, BOTH safeties, two starting defensive tackles, pregame.  At game time we found out we were also going without our starting center.  During the course of the game, we lost our RG and RT, our starting TE, AND our #1 receiver for large portions of the game.

1.We gifted the Dolphins a turnover at our own 6 yard line.

2.Gabe Davis dropped an easy TD.

3.Van Rotten caused us to miss a FG attempt right before the half.

4.Milano missed a guaranteed pick six.

5.Tyler Bass missed a chip shot 38 harder.

6.Allen missed McKenzie for a sure TD.

7.We mismanaged the final drive that should've ended in a game winning FG attempt.

We left a gazillion plays on the field.  Miami left none, and played as perfect a game as they could've.  And we lost by two points, in the final seconds of the game.

There's no doubt in my mind we're the best team in the league.

I'm just going through our list of injured players and curious who everyone thinks we missed the most of all of our injured?

    Mitch Morse

    Tre White

    Micah Hyde

    Jordan Poyer

    Ed Oliver

    Jordan Phillips

    Bobby Hart

    Dane Jackson

I think Micah and Mitch were the worst because Micah is the voice of the defense and Mitch showed his worth by just knowing how to snap the ball.  Josh even if the play wasn't altered by the snap was obviously worried about it.

Then who that we lost in the game or was severely hampered would you have liked to see at peak performance?

    Stephon Diggs

    Gabe Davis

    Jake Kumerow

    Mckenzie

    Ryan Bates

    Van Rotten

    Spencer Brown

I think a healthy fresh Diggs would have made the difference.  I hope we get healthy in a hurry.  The Bills had everything thrown at them yesterday and still only lost by two and had a chance to win the game.  If we can have most of these people back than I think we handle the Ravens, otherwise it's a dogfight

If you would've asked me before the game, I would've said Dane Jackson or Micah Hyde.  I had no idea Morse or Poyer weren't playing.

In hindsight, MOST DEFINITELY Morse.  In my opinion, Van Rotten was abysmal, and to me it seemed like Josh was out of sync quite a bit yesterday.  I know that our O line struggled as a whole, and it seemed like the Dolphins D line was able to collapse the pocket and harrass Josh all day, but there were entirely too many bad snaps, and Van Rotten was singlehandedly responsible for the missed FG opportunity right before the half.

So yeah, Morse by a country mile.  But I also agree with you, I really would've liked to have Diggs out there at 100% our last few offensive possessions.  He was clearly both gassed and cramping bad....he could've been the difference between a W and an L because Allen would've had the peace of mind knowing he had his #1 guy out there.

The NFL or players association needs to step in and do something about this. We could have had several players die or be so heat effected that it could effect those players for several games. This is a safety issue. When the dolphins play in buffalo they have the same heaters and cold weather gear and it’s on equal footing. In Miami one team gets to be in the shade the entire game while the other side bakes in the sun. I’ve never been to Hard Rock stadium. But it appears there is some sort of screen or something that keeps their side shady. This is a very unfair advantage that effects the players heath. It would be like the dolphins having to play in leather helmets Vs the Bill's with todays helmet technology. I’m not pissed that we lost. I’m mad about how the sun effected the Bills players more because one team gets the shade while the other team bakes. This needs to stop to protect player safety.

I agree with you 100%.  Now that you and several other posters have pointed this out, it makes total sense.  I was just commenting in another thread how it seemed so weird that the Bills were struggling so bad with the heat, and cramping.  I remember watching the game at one point and the camera panned to the Bills sideline, and I said to myself "damn they look hot baking in that heat".

I don't know if I call it smart thinking or an unfair advantage or what, but it's DEFINITELY a considerable home field advantage for at least the first two months of the season....

We left a ton of plays on the field and Miami really did not.

This x 100.  This is what it really boiled down to in a nutshell.  If you think about it, we basically played our worst game of the short season and Miami gave us their very best and played lights out, making very few mistakes(or at least we couldn't capitalize on them).

You take that into consideration coupled with us missing damn near half the team, and only losing by two, in the last seconds of the game.....I can't help but be encouraged.  This team, firing on all cylinders, is simply UNSTOPPABLE.  Period.

Did you really expect this team was going to go 17-0?

Tell me how many teams would win against a solid, division rival missing their two star safeties, two starting DTs, starting CB, starting center and then lose their #2 WR in the first quarter (Kumerow was #2 today, Gabe obviously still isn't 100%, but gutted it out when Kumerow went down), lose their backup center and have to start a kid just called up from the practice squad, lose their right tackle, their right guard, and have their two healthy receivers cramping up and barely able to stay on the field in the 2nd half, etc., etc.

It was 99 degrees on the field with no wind/breeze. And the Bills sideline in the Sun all day (another big advantage for the Phins).

These aren't rationalizations, those are the reality of the game today. Did they make mistakes, execute poorly at key times, etc. Yes, they did. But to not be able to see this as a valiant effort under very difficult circumstances and act as if it should have been an easy win or something, seems to be more in the realm of fantasy to me than any of these so-called rationalizations.

I chalk this one up like the New England wind game last year. Yes, we should have still won, but I'm not calling for anyone's head. Just horrible circumstances from start to finish. Suck it up and move on to the next game.

I also think a lot of people are underestimating how much the first two weeks took out of the team. Two big, primetime games against two very good teams. The Bills mustered up a lot of energy for those two games. And coming back from that on a short week with as many injuries as we had was a tough ask to get the W, and yet with all of that, we only lost by 2 in their house with a chance to win it at the end. We held their offense in check and outgained them significantly, with a huge disparity in time of possession. I'm not dismissing the mistakes that led to the loss, but I am understanding of them.

Excellent, excellent points you bring up, especially with the heat.  It seemed to me like we really struggled with the heat and cramping.  Not to say Miami's players didn't too, but it looked like our guys were really struggling.  In the 4th, Diggs just looked absolutely gassed.

You also made a great point about how much those first two games, both prime time national spotlight games might have taken a toll on us, both physically AND emotionally.... coupled with us having so many injuries AND coming into Miami on a short week.

To leave as many plays and points on the field like we did and still be in a position to win the game is a testament to just how good this team is.

  14. Guys,

A loss is never an easy thing to swallow, especially for us Bills fans this day and age, considering the fact we have arguably the best, most talented team in the NFL AND are the consensus super bowl favorites.  I go into every game fully expecting to win, and there's not a team in this league that scares me.

With that said, and for the first time in a very long time I was very nervous heading into this game, for obvious reasons:  starting two rookie CB's against two of the fastest and talented receivers in the league, both starting safeties out, our two best defensive tackles out and a third less than 100%, one of our starting LB's less than 100%, our number two WR less than 100%, ditto for our starting TE.  THEN, right before kickoff we find out our center is out for the game.  Really?

No worries.  But to add injury to more injury, during the course of the game, we manage to lose two more starting offensive lineman!  Our RG AND RT.  Oh yeah and btw, our all world number one WR is lost for significant chunks of minutes due to cramping/injury.

Due to injuries or whatever, our offensive line was overwhelmed all game.  Even though he threw for 400 yards, Josh looked out of sync for much of the day. He rarely had any time to throw, as it seemed like the offensive line was completely overwhelmed by Miami's front four.  The pocket seemed to collapse around him all day, and even though the stat line says he was only sacked four times, he was hurried or knocked down far too often. Singletary was blown up at or behind the line several times.  Singletary's rushing numbers, 9 carries for 13 yards. Moss's rushing numbers (minus his 43 yard scamper), 3 carries for 3 yards.

Buffalo giftwrapped Miami a TD by giving them the ball at the 6 yard line.

That last drive of the first half, Van Rotten was utterly abysmal in his snapping duties, and was singlehandedly responsible for us going into the locker room without at least a FG attempt.

The usually reliable Bass missed what should have been a chip shot 38 yard FG.

Tua gifted Milano with a pass right into his mitts that should've been a guaranteed pick six.

Yet despite ALL that happening to us, despite everything that went wrong, there we were at the end of the game in a position to limp out of Hard Rock Stadium with a W.  Going into a game vs a hated division rival, in 90 degree temps, missing a frumptillion players, and losing by 2?

I don't think I realized it FULLY, until today, just how effing deep, talented, and utterly amazing this team is, and the potential to do other-worldly things on the football field.   When this season is said and done, I really wont even try to guess how many records are shattered.

I remain as encouraged as ever after today's loss.  Maybe even more so.

    LET'S GO BUFFALO!

  15. Definitely disappointed.  I mean, as talented as this team is, I expect to win every single week.  There's not a single opponent in the National Football League that I think is better than us.  So yeah, to make it to the big show and lose, I'd be extremely disappointed.

That's not to say I wouldn't be proud of us making it there, but at this point, anything short of hoisting the Lombardi would hurt.

  17. Thank you as always for your excellent write-up Shaw.  Reading it really made me feel like I was right there enjoying the festivities and atmosphere with everyone else.

Man I would've lost it when Marv took the mic and asked everyone "Where would you rather be, then right here, right now?".

I say this with unbridled arrogance, certaincy, this is going to be one of, if not THE most magical year in the history of the Buffalo Bills.  I say this not as a fanboy, or some fan lacking football knowledge just making outrageous, thoughtless predictions for the heck of it, but in my humble opinion, the only team that can stop the Buffalo Bills, is the Buffalo Bills.  Four starters out pregame(Oliver, Settle, White, and Davis), during the course of the game we lose four MORE starters(Phillips might as well be considered one), our offense was a bit out of sync in that first half particularly, yet we STILL ABSOLUTELY EVISCERATED the Titans!  Missing two of our D tackles and then a third goes out, and we STILL hold Henry to 25 yards on 13 carries.  Like for real?

I can only imagine how that stadium was rockin last night.  Thanks again for the awesome write-up friend.
