If you're a congressman and you accept bribes,
pope zimli replied to smokinandjokin's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
hopefully a special prosecutor will be appointed to go after the folks who bought his house, bought his yacht, gave him the money. The congressman will hopefully cooperate and the crooks who do the bribing will be dealing in contraband cigarettes at some penitentiary for a good ten years. But then...I still believe in Santa. -
"deemed to be related" may be a very very wide exception.

I suspect neither MM nor TD will last beyond this season. First and foremost TD did not see two important things...great teams are built from the trenches out, and second that if you have Drew Bledsoe you have to build a Drew Bledsoe offense. That would have meant keeping Travis Henry and using the draft choices to draft OL. McKinnie over Williams, keeping Jonas Jennings, drafting a great tight end (Jason Witten not being a bad choice) and keeping Washington or Williams even if it means letting others go. Very bad choices on TD's part. MM's play calling and coaching has been horrible for some time. There have been very good coaching recruitment coups in the last few years and we have made two bad ones.

Sharing Intel With Congress
pope zimli replied to RI Bills Fan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
And in this case the "obvious reason for keeping access to certain things to the minimum amount" was to dupe the congress into voting for war? The fact is our intelligence sucked before we went into Iraq, and still sucks in Iraq and elsewhere. We spend more money on intelligence to get a shoddy and useless product. The proof is in the pudding. -

A respected historian said there were three rules involving a foreign power getting involved in a civil war in another country. Rule one...Don't. rule 2 If you can't follow Rule 1...pick a side. Rule 3 If you have to pick a side, make sure your side wins. The civil war is going to happen, now or whenever we pull out. Keeping our troops there just increases American casualties before it happens. If we are going to get involved and violate rule one (which we shouldn't)...we have to pick between the Kurds, the Sunnis and the Shiites. If we pick a side we pick the one that will win and support it. The Kurds are most acceptable, but they carry heavy duty baggage in that they have their own enemies (Turkey being a major one). The Shiites lead to a strong Islamic state. The Sunnis will give us a younger improved Saddam. Murtha is right. Get out and follow rule one.

yeah. Those two touchdown passes were just flukes anyway. Besides its all about how you swagger on the sidelines and what you say in press conferences, isn't it?

Why isn't Roscoe Parrish being used?
pope zimli replied to Tolstoy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the powers that be are pretty happy with the receiving corps on the field. Give him time and he'll be playing more. Nice to have him there in case of a (God forbid) injury though. -
The "religious right" has every right to believe what it wants. Hell it even has the right to show up on my porch every once in a while to ak if I have "found Jesus" (I never even knew the guy was lost). However they are going a little far when they try to impose their religious views on the rest of us, many of whom are or are directly descended from folk who came here to avoid persecution from religious bigots (friggin protestants in my case...note however that my brand of religion gave us the inquisition and other examples of religious bigotry). I think we ought to be very careful about politicians who claim to have Jesus, Mohammed or Buddha on their side. Hearing Pat Robertson sit in judgment on the folks of Dover Pennsylvania would be scary, if it weren't for the fact that Pat is such an a-hole.

I saw her doing a USO tour with Bob Hope in Vietnam. Quite a looker. Also had some Miss USA candidates with him. Didn't find Bob all that attractive, but he sure knew what we really wanted to see.

Great observation. I remember Lou Saban in his heyday saying he built every successful team from the line back. He was up to his neck in great offensive and defensive linemen. I still think Drew Bledsoe would have been so successful here if they had only looked to the o-line and drafted a good tight end.

10,000 seems pretty modest. Most of the people in this country could be on the list according to most recent polls. Wish the Bush intelligence operation had shown that kind of zest on national security prior to 9/11. Or prior to the war in Iraq.

I think JP gives us a good chance to win now.
pope zimli replied to Fan in San Diego's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not all that sure putting JP in is trashing the season. I think he can play better, and I think Holcomb is showing all he has these last few games. I think all Holcomb has will get us a 7-9 record. JP will probably give us a 6-8 record as he looks now, and may be showing his upside soon enough to get us the east berth (assuming everyone else keeps playing as poorly as they are. In any event this is going to be a pretty forgettable season. As to pissed off veterans...I ain't seeing any terrel owens talent worth putting up with much crap for. But hell, I don't see why Philadelphia even up with the crap they did from TO. -

pope zimli replied to Fan in San Diego's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is worth very serious consideration. I'd probably start Holcomb this next week and if he falters put in JP. I don't think Holcombe can throw the deep ball, and don't believe JP was all that bad (however, he wasn't all that good.) I think it is time for him to show what he has over the next eight games. -

Kelly may not be the answer
pope zimli replied to buffalobillsfootball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We won't know what Losman has until he plays a bit more. I'm sure he's no Peyton Manning, but I'm also sure he isn't a Ryan Leaf. Let's run him through this season and find out. Hell, we aren't playing like a playoff time so let's find out what we have. If he doesn't work out, get another quarterback. -
if i had to pick 1 player in nfl history that

Walt Patulski, the ultimate underperformer...Remember Bosworth did have a very bad shoulder injury in his first year. -
This world and our nation have begun to depress me
pope zimli replied to OnTheRocks's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Aren't we confusing truth (as in something is true as a matter of fact) and falsity (a thing is not true) with lying, which is a conscious and volitional act of deception? Many people can be telling what they actually think is "the truth" but simply be wrong ("Iraq and WMD, perhaps). I'll admit that is a pretty hard case to sell now knowing what we do about the actual state of knowledge in the white house at the time they were telling us "the truth". I think this Libby thing may bring out whether or not we were lied to. If so there is a warm place in hell for those who got us into this mess, and about 2,000 souls with a real right to be pissed off. -
Say what you will about Al Ito

or his brother, the priest....FrIto -
With Spikes out I'm not sure if this is an option, but I would be tempted to go to a three/four defense and lay off much of the carefree blitz package. Further the best way to stop a running game is to keep the runner off the field. That means we should concentrate on clock management and using our running games (WM is perfect for it, he gets yardage and moves the chains). I'm not sure that we have the linebackers to go this route, but I don't see any other choice.
