1. This is a job for....Super Moderators!

    256860

Well, the party line is that Drew completely sucks and is fully to blame for any and all woes, though there are exceptions. Oh, and Henry is a superstar, worth more than Faulk in his prime.

All I can say wrt this staggeringly intelligent post is.....good morning, fellow Drewshbag!

  2. Did this have anything to do with the Bourough chiefs taking money from PVB and when they got caught a bunch of them jumping from there offices and the PVB employee jumping out of the Amex building back in the 80's?

BTW, I helped but systems in place so that skimming didn't happen as overtly again.

    256521

It was not police department "borough chiefs." The thief was the Queens Borough President, a man named "Donald Manes."

As BP, he had a pretty good deal. He would start his day with enormous meals. Then he would consume alcohol and ingest various drugs. Next up....prostitutes!

When he had the strength left, he stole a few million with the help of a collection afency hired to collect parking fines. The problem was, people would pay the fines, be billed again, and they would not accept any proof that the fine was already paid.

When caught, suicide was only a matter of time. He was successful after at least one prior attempt.

Not that it matters, but he was a liberal dem.

  3. Now this is a good post and I agree with alot that you are saying.  But if the Bills defense had stopped the Jaguars in the final seconds of the game, 10-6 would have made the playoffs.  So it is not all Bledsoe's fault and while the Bills are looking toward the future, the Cowboys are taking a chance to win now.

And the Browns would have signed Bledsoe if the Cowboys had not beaten them to it.

But really, TD made his decision to go with Losman and now the Bills organization have to get behind him and give the team what it needs to make the playoffs..

    256125

Dude, this was probably your best post ever on TSW. Good work!

PS: What was the Bills record with Travis Henry as a starter for those same 3 years.....yet posters propose trades such as Henry for Gallery!

  4. Bill, do you really think that's how most people feel on here? I definitely fall into the category of giving Drew very little of the credit for our 9 wins last year, but even though I'm very excited about JP giving it a go, I sure as HECK don't have the guy pegged for Canton. I can assure you that if he pulls a 'Bledsoe' or even fails to raise the bar, I'll be just as desirous for a change at QB as I am after three years of Drew ball.

But I think most people on here are clearly aware of the need for a solid, veteran backup with some measure of success on his resume. I, for one, would be much more comfortable with a Garcia or Fiedler behind JP than I am a Matthews.

    256089

Look, I am not looking for an angry confrontation. I want to make that clear, OK? Moreover, I truly appreciate the dialogue.

That said, I ask you to please re-read your post. "Pulls a Bledsoe?!" Drew is near the top in every vital passing category. JP was leaned on by a db and was all but killed. The odds of JP even approaching these numbers are oh so slim, but you talk of "even failing to raise the bar."!!!!

Don't you see what you are doing? Optimism is fine, but to accept it as fact is not reasonable. Ryan Leaf came into the NFL with FAR better credentials than JP. YOU see little possibility that JP will be worse than a man who has been to the superbowl twice, after his shameful, dismal debut.

    Sorry, it doesn't make sense.

  5. What many in this thread seem to forget is that Drew played in Buffalo for 3 years. For 2 of those years, his headcoach was a boob. For the other, his headcoach was a rookie.

Now, he is going to a team that is coached by an all time great. He is SO great, that he defeated the best coach we ever had in a superbowl, with an inferior team to boot.

Add to this the fact that Drew is now in a weaker conference/division, and perhaps one could see a reason for optimism for cowboy fans.....that is IF you can get past the hate.

  6. I just gotta ask, what kind of kool-aid is 80% of this board drinking? Sure I'm not at practice everyday or at mini-camp, but J.P. isn't that good at this point in his career. It will be a very rough season to be a Bills fan unless our running game is soooooooooooo good we won't have to rely on JP. If we do, don't count on playoffs, don't count on a winning season either.

    255520

Do not expect many positive replies. The majority here literally hate Drew and give him ALL of the blame for the failures of the Bills, and for that matter, zero credit for 9 wins in 05. They also have JP penciled in for Canton. That to most here is a done deal.

For the record, I support the coaches decision to make the switch. That said, I accept the possibility that JP will suck. All I am asking for is a legit backup. You will find that many here see no need for this, despite the fact that JP has ZERO experience, and was almost killed while brushing up against a defensive back.

  7. As the tax situation gets worse and the area continues to decay, how will this affect the recruiting of prime players?  Will the team have to up their offers to compensate?

    Thoughts?

    255849

I think that it will matter to a degree. If anything, it makes the player draft more important to a team like the Bills than perhaps the Falcons.

The climate is also a negative factor, yet Takeo rolled right into town and he played college ball at Auburn, right?

Imo, a good GM will be able to handle it unless the reigon just collapses. Is this even close to happening?

From what I have seen in Amherst and Williamsville, it looks very nice.

I would contemplate moving there. My wife would not, and she wins.

  8. We don't know how JP will turn out and it's a legit concern. I have confidence in the Coaches to identify talent plus I'm very encouraged Losman is here putting in the time and working on his game in February !

Concerning a backup, ask yourself this. Mularkey was frustrated with the limited playbook he was forced to use with Drew, due to his lack of mobility and his inabilty to click on the short passing game. Now does one actually believe he would go out and grab another stone footed pocket passer after opening up the playbook with JP ?

I may be dead wrong but don't you think TD will be giving a call to Jay Fiedler on Wednesday ? Or someone else, with MOBILITY, who can run most of the plays in the JP offense.

Come on, folks. We're barking out names based on recognition. Most don't fit what Mularkey want in a backup QB. Also, Shane Matthews may not be an acceptable backup to some, point taken,  but many here are already assuming he's not a possibility whatsover.  The Bills are saying different. May be a smokescreen but I bet we know within a week.

    255949

Good post Mark. I am only saying that mobility matters less in a short passing game when the football is thrown in 2 or 3 seconds.

As for Fiedler, he is my first choice, but Brad woild not be bad at all.

Btw, I too trust the coaches on the JP decision, but anything can happen.

  9. woodson's number is so high because a f-tagged player receives either the average of the top 5 at the position OR 120% of your previous year's salary........because he was tagged last year (which is considered all salary), he gets the 120%.......

the tag number this year for CB's is 8.816M.........

    255480

Thanks for the info. That is still a sick number, no?

  10. he will not suck . growing pains ,yes

    255903

Thank you SOOOOOOOO much for that post. It was right on time!

How are you in a position to say that he will not suck? For all we know, he will:

    1) Spend his money on drugs.

    2) Not be able to compete against NFL competion.

    3) Have a bad attitude.

    4) Not care.

    5) Get injured.

    Otoh, he COULD be great!

My point is that we dont know! There is nothing wrong...ZERO....with having a competent, professional qb on the Bills in case your unreasonable supposition is incorrect.

  11. I swear, for most people here there is not a FA out there talented enough to be a Buffalo Bill's BACKUP!!!

Yes, he would be a good fit to BACKUP Losman.  I think he has a the combination of skill and experience that we need to help JP along and step in for a few games if needed.  His starting days are over, but he will make a good BACKUP!

    255777

This is because a sizeable number (not all mind you) of posters here think that it is impossible for JP to NOT be great. Look at the postings and see for yourself.

A vast majority think that he is already better than Drew, based on nothing but a sordid season in 04.

Imagine if he had accomplished even one thing? He would be penciled in as an all time great.

  12. Nope. BJ is just as immobile as Bledsoe these days. The Bills won't spend 2 mil a season for a backup either

    255767

Drew's game was downfield passing. Johnson is more into the short game, where mobility matters far less.

I think that he would be a splendid fit on this team in case JP gets injured, or sucks.

  13. One point about Woodson's $10.5 M. The cost of the tag for a CB is much less than that. However, after he was designated with the tag (as an exclusive rights franchise player to boot) last year, his 2004 salary was inflated -- and he commanded an increase of 20% over what he made last year, which is greater than what the franchise tender would have been this year. So, if we tag Nate, it would likely "only" be in the $7-$8 M range next year. And if some other team wants to shell out two number ones for him, that is OK too.

    255861

That is interesting. I hope that you are correct. What I do know is that this number was inflated by the HUGE cap cost of Ty Law.

If your numbers are correct, Woodson had more than an 8 million dollar cap hit last season. Although I am not doubting you, this does seem high. Then again, Mike Williams already counts at the obscene figure of 9.17 mil.

Do you remember when Woodson was selected in the first round?

  14. Several years ago, the Bills were in the playoffs with their 4th and 5th string corners as I recall. You saw how that turned out.

I think that MaGee has a great upside, but he returns kickoffs. Clements IS very good, and he returns punts. This increases the injury risk for both. The Bills are dangerously thin at CB. The pass rush that our front 4 provides is good, but not earth shattering. This football team needs more quality corners and quickly, considering that Nate is all but gone after this season.

  15. IMO, one of the worst recent offseason move was the Skins signing Mark Brunell to a 7 year $43 million deal.  Gibbs has already stated that Ramsey is the starter next year.

    255834

Absolutely right. That was insane. I have never seen Gibbs do something that dumb in his career.

Placing the franchise tag on Woodson for 10.15 million HAS to be right up there. He is guaranteed the money, AND he will be a UFA in 06 and cash in again. It makes you wonder how any GM could be just that stupid.:doh::huh:

Letting him walk would have made twice the sense of paying him that kind of cash!

  16. I think that the Bills are going to take a CB with our first pick no matter where we are in the draft.  This year is by far one of the better years to get a CB, much like last year's draft was deep at WR.

    CBs available in draft

9 CBs are projected to be drafted in the first two rounds.

Based on TD's draft history, if he selects a CB with the first pick, you can expect Nate Clements to be either tagged next year and traded (Peerless), or the Bills will let him walk in FA (Antoine WInfield).

    255461

In 05, the franchise tag costs more for a cb (woodson 10.15 million) than a LT (Pace approx. 8 million).

Imo, the tag is no longer an option wrt Nate at that price.

  17. That moves us up about 20 spots to the end of the first.  IMHO it's probably about right value, but I don't see Philly wanting him.  He would be the backup, they would be better served using their own second and picking up a back.  As for the Bills not sure what they gives us, it would depend on who is available.  I just don't see us being helped much at all by that trade, other than clearing Travis from the locker room.  We however wind up taking on more cap burden with a 1st rounder.

    255414

True, the Eagles might not be the spot.

What the Bills WOULD get in terms of this kind of a deal is a much better chance at a cornerback, if this is where they are going.

I have a feeling they will go very fast, and the jests are almost certain to select one with their first pick.

The OGs went faster than expected last season as well if I recall.

  18. While I would probably be happy with a stick of used chewing gum for Travis, other then Warren I would be happy with any of those guys.  Shelton probably fills the biggest need however.

    255330

VA, it is obvious that you and I value TH far less than the party line, but i have one for you.....

Do you think that the Eagles would take our 2nd round pick & Henry for their 1st round pick? I have my doubts if the Eagles would make the trade, but I would gladly do so.

  19. just to clarrify.......

signed through 2005 season -- Clements, Mcgee, Edwards, Reed, Teague

signed through 2006 season -- Adams, Campbell, Fletcher, Kelsay, Milloy, Posey, Tucker, Lindell

    255289

Thank you for this much needed clarification.

After 06, Milloy and Big Sam will border on being old players, this if they stay healthy after 2 more seasons.

  20. clements is a free agent after next year.......obviously a big priority right now, as his price gets higher and higher the longer TD waits......all the other guys you listed are free agents after the 2006 season.......the only one i would offer a contract to right now is kelsay, as he is still on his first contract and would surely love a fat signing bonus along with an early jump in pay........

2 years is a LONG time........we have 2 drafts to prepare for any potential departures of vets..........it's really not that big a deal, but will play in to the drafting strategy to some degree........

ron edwards is a priority if the bills are turning over the #2 DT job to him.......if that is the case, he should be offered an extension......if he plays out his contract year, we could pay big time for it..........

locking up mcgee is a priority, but as he will only be an RFA next off-season, it will not kill us to have him play out his deal.......more effort should be made to extend him though, as he should be eager to sign a fair deal given his 4th round status.......

i would also extend reed now and not wait until after the year to deal with him..........if he has a rebound season (as i think he will) he's as good as gone.........

    255281

Do you know exactly how long it takes a player to be eligible to become a RFA and/or a UFA?

We might as well keep taloking about it. As we speak, fully one half of the posts on the front page are OT.

  21. Are you positive about Kelsay? He was not a RFA this year. Are you certain he will be a UFA in 06?

This would present a problem. It is extremely hard to find DEs. Many complain about this kid but imo, he was one of the most improved players on the team in 05. His continued improvement is very likely, and the Bills need to have a pair of top DEs.

As I stated in another thread, sadly, losing Clements seems probable. Do you think he would accept a 5 year/35 million dollar contract right now? He might very well not. Do you want to pay him that much?

    Tough questions for TD.

  22. Did uou see the franchise number for the CB position? Woodson signed an offer of 10 million dollars. Ironically, Law drove up that price and was cut.

In any event, this all but takes away the option to tag Clements in 06. I like him a ton as a cb, AND he returns punts, but imo, cb is just the wrong position to allocate 10 mil. worth of cap space.

Winfield got more than 30 million dollars. Clements is clearly superior, and he is a very good return man. What will HE want, 40 million? 50 million?

It may work out, but I am thinking that the Bills need to draft a corner on day 1 of the draft. I would have loved to get Surtain as well.

I think that TD should have tried last season to extend Nate. You know, maybe he did, but looking at the whole picture, I am thinking that 05 is it for Nate as a Buffalo Bill.

  23. It would be interesting to know the offers made to Jonas and Pat before the 2004 season began.

Schobel's offer seems to have been much more competitive and while Aaron's sack total was down this year--his run stuffing was much improved, he forced 5 fumbles, plus he has never missed a game in 4 years.

Jonas Jennings, as has been well chronicled, has missed games every year--and much if it has to do with shoulder and ankle issues--I wonder if something potentially chronic is developing -- he averages somewhere between 3 and 4 missed games a year. He is above average when in the game and not hurting but he has had games where he looks awful -- usually either before or just after missing a couple. This is not a guy I would think demands Tait/Diem type money, let alone Pace/Jones or Ogden type bucks to be honest.  We need a replacement, but we also have a lot invested in the line already -- we need to get both a starting LT and LG out of a cap number that Jonas would want for himself.

Pat Williams is the proverbial warrior.  Very durable, play disruptor, etc.  But  I watched Ron Edwards a lot this year..especially in the Dolphins home game where he spent the day in the Dolphins backfield..He is not Pat Williams when it comes to being the immovable object--but he has some skills that can offer consistent push.  Pat is 32--his tackles this year dropped by 30-40% from the previous two years...and the Defense overall is a lot better than when we let Ted Washington go 4 years ago...Pat is not worth $5 million a year to us...he may be to some other team that needs to upgrade their D, but for us, we have invested in other areas of the D (LB, Secondary in particular to upgrade)--we need to have a cheaper DT that has come up through the system and we need to invest in making our 3rd down Defense better--(pass coverage LB, another corner, pass rusher) --which is something Pat had little influence over....

I will miss Jonas and Pat--but I think resigning them to big contracts are more like "Jerry O and John Holocek" moves than they are "Moulds, Schobel and Pat Williams first extension like" moves.....

    255043

    >>>I will miss Jonas and Pat--but I think resigning them to big contracts are more like "Jerry O and John Holocek" moves than they are "Moulds, Schobel and Pat Williams first extension like" moves..... <<<

    BINGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is the difference in style between Mr Butler and TD. With respect to Mr Butler, he was at least as good on draft day as was TD. I think that he was better.

TD is a better cap man. There is ZERO reason to sign these two at a huge cap cost. They do NOT deserve to be paid like Pace and Seymour. They are not nearly as good.

TD will let them walk if need be, and I resoect him for it.
