Cap Update for 2004 & 2005

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that the 53 man roster is set, I can give y'all a cap update for both 2004 & 2005. Mind you, 2005 is still very preliminary and it must be remembered that the Bills have a number of FAs, unrestricted and restricted, after the season.

    2004

I presently have the Bills $5,894,754 under an adjusted cap of $79,759,085 with $5,327,910 dead cap. Bills have 54 players (includes Travis Brown) under contract. What's missing from that number?

    1) Any roster or other bonuses that I'm unaware of for players that made 53 man roster. Some may be LTBE

    2) ALL bonus information for J.P. Losman. I presently have his cap hit at only his salary of $230,000. However, while it's been reported he rec'd no signing bonus, he's likely to have rec'd a roster bonus of some kind.

    3) Workout bonuses: every player receives modest workout bonuses during the offseason. Usually, they must be on the roster at the beginning of the League Year, which was early March. Each player makes a few thousand, but when added up throughout the roster, could be over $100,000. I have NOT included this in my numbers.

    4) Practice squads are now up to 8 players. I do not know what the pay rate of these players are at this time. If it's $5,000/wk, then $5,000 x 8 players x 17 weeks = $680,000 that must be accounted for by the end of the season.

    2005

Again, these numbers are very preliminary. However, I've been asked by many what the future holds. So........

with 38 players under contract for 2005, I presently have the Bills $14,677,052 under an estimated salary cap of $84,000,000 with $670,443 dead cap. What NOT is that number?

    1) Cap adjusment: each of the past 3 seasons that I've known about cap adjustments, the Bills have had a debit which decreases available cap space.

    2) Bonus information for J. P. Losman. (I hope to get this info very soon)

    3) 13 more players need to be signed to comply with top 51 rule (even at minimum of $235,000, that's $3.055 million off the available cap space

    4) Players who have (or may have) salary escalators: Mike Williams, Willis McGahee?, J. P. Losman(unlikely to achieve)

    5) Bills have a number of FAs as follows:

UFA:DE Schobel, DT P. Williams, OT Jennings, FS Reese, OT M. Price, DT Edwards, QB Matthews, QB T. Brown, TE Neufeld

RFA:RB Burns, OL Pucillo, CB Thomas

EFA:DB Baker, LS Dorenbas, CB Greer, LB Stamer

Players likely to have contracts re-worked:

WR Eric Moulds: has a cap number of $8.75 million in 2005

OT Mike Williams: salary escalator which could take his salary from $726,875 to as high as $4 million. He also has a $3 million roster bonus due. His cap number is nearly $6 million.

Bills face a tight cap situation next year

I'll have more on the 2005 cap later in the season

    19570

    >>>OT Mike Williams: salary escalator which could take his salary from $726,875 to as high as $4 million. He also has a $3 million roster bonus due. His cap number is nearly $6 million<<<

Do you know exactly how much it would cost to cut him both before and after 6/1 if he does not play up to this salary level?

I sure hope that it doesn't come to this.

  2. Given we actually resign Schobel then next years draft looks like this if we want to win some games down the line:

    Rnd 1 OL

    Rnd2 OL

    Rnd 3 OL

    Rnd 4 OL

and sign a decent FA OL or two............And a DE wouldn't hurt either

then we might go better than .500

    19965

Sounds good, but the 1st round pick is no longer with us. :flirt:

  3. The best response would be one that comes from the head and not from the heart. Revenge may be emotionally satisfying but if it does nothing to prevent this sort of tragedy from happening again and instead makes a repitition more likely, then it is a very hollow sort of victory. The perpetrators of this atrocity must have known that a heavy-handed indiscriminate response was a likely outcome, indeed they may well have been counting on it. The more that innocent Chechens are killed or punished for the actions of these maniacs the more likely it is that ordinary Chechens will take up arms against Russia. What is needed is a two-pronged approach - it must be made clear that Russia's quarrel is not with ordinary Chechens but with the monsters that would carry out such actions, while at the same time pursuing the terrorists will full vigour.

    20119

chicot, are you willing to accept the possibility that you tend to hold non-Islamic countries to a far higher standard when it comes to terrorism and war? Could you even give this any thought?

If Israel took hostages in a Palestinian school, deprived them of food and water, and set off explosions, would you urge and caution Palestinians to be oh so careful in retaliation?

At some point, the masses of muslims are going to pay for sitting on their hands, and even cheering while Americans, Brits, Russians, Israelis (Jews), etc. are murdered by Islamic scum. Yes my friend, scum. Filthy criminal scum who murder others under the guise of caring for their fellow muslims.

All these "fundamentalists" truly want is power and money, and the spoils that accompany it. Yes, the things that money can buy, but you know what....they will lose.

  4. If I were a Bills fan.....I'd want anyone BUT Jay" Mr.  never lost a start against the Bills"  Fiedler starting for the Fins..... :flirt:

    20057

DCM, I am glad that you post here, so please do not take the following as a flame:

You are correct. Fiedler is your best bet. Why? Because your OL is so piss poor that he, a younger Doug Flutie, is their only hope of a qb to get out of trouble while defenders breeze by your weak waste of an OL. The problem is that it is similar to placing a bandaid on a gaping wound. You will NOT ever advance far with Fiedler.

You see, the Bills once looked like the current phish. We had a GREAT defense, with the likes of Cowart, Ted Washington, Bruce, etc. The problem was that we had ZERO offense. To all of those who say that defense is what wins football games, my reply is that defense alone is not enough. They will wear down as the offense flounders, and that Sir, is what you will see with the 04 dolphins.

Mark me down as one who sees them at 6-10 or worse.

  5. I need a subject (in the royal sense) for this year's Odes!  I wanted Luvuale Sape, but he got cut so he's out. Best name I can find is our fifth corner, Jabrari Greer.  Any thoughts?  After all ... tomorr-y nears !

    20104

Petrino, it is truly great to see you here in time for the season! :):flirt:

How about a change of pace this year, and doing an ode to McNally? I think that you can do a ton of things with that.

    Hey, you asked!

  6. I'm not sold on the Jets at all... but I'm becoming increasingly in the minority there.

    20018

    Nor am I.

Their OL has holes, and Curtis Martin is an old, washed up has-been. I dont know about their new wideouts, but Moss and Chrebet are midgets, injury prone little midgets at that.

On defense, the line looks OK. The lbs are either rookies or washed up, and the secondary is a complete mess.

Edwards, though a seemingly nice guy, is a blithering idiot. He might be the only living American who stunk at his job AND bad mouthed his boss, and was "rewarded" with a contract extention at double the salary. He utters one liners such as "You play the game to win" and this moronic drivel is all over the sports headlines of the NYC papers as if they are quoting Vince Lombardi, or perhaps Shakespeare.

No, dont worry too much about the jests. They are losers, floating in a sea of confusion and despair.

  7. Bill--are you okay?  You didn't get bit by any malaria carrying mosquitos this weekend or anything, did you??...forgive me if I am mistaken but this is almost a tad positive outlook about the o-line..

God bless you man....a little faith and hope is good this time of year.

    Go Bills!!!!!

    19666

As a matter of fact I was stung by a bee (on my neck) on friday. :(

I still take the position that Bills qbs, rbs and fans are entitled to better blocking than we have seen for the last 10 years. As far as I am concerned, the Bills played 03 with virtually NO RG, and a LG who weighed 270 or so, and was tossed around on passing downs like a frisbee at a picnic.

I am openly predicting a TD run from the right side in game one...by MaGahee! :(:D B)

  8. if the Buffalo Bills are to improve this season.

Even if Big Mike and Teague show no improvement at all this season (hopefully this is NOT the case), their tasks will be easier playing next to a good RG, the Bills first in approx 10 years.

Last season, Henry gained the bulk of his many yards running left, or so I thought. The ability to run to either side will make it harder for defenses to cheat. Also, having more plays at his disposal can only help Drew. Additionally, MaGahee and Evans bring speed to the football field, something the Bills lacked in 03.

I dont know what 04 will bring, but I am unimpressed with the jests, and the dolphins are a second rate football team. NE is overdue for some bad luck.

The Bills enter this season with some question marks, but imo they will be a better team than last season; this from a skeptic.

In all, count me as one who believes that the playoffs are a distinct possibility providing that the coaching is better (one would think that this is all but certain), the pass protection improves, and we find a way to put more pressure on opposing qbs.

Either way, I am ready!!!!GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Good work ICE!

I was going to do so in a seperate thread, but instead I will use this one to thank you, and each and every person on TBD with whom I have participated in football discussions.

ICE, you are correct. Most of us here are probably way too "wrapped up" in the Bills. We are the hardest of the hard core fans, and imo the most knowledgeable (myself not included). In my case, the Bills are my escape. They are something to believe in and remind us that anything is possible.

The Bills (and TBD) have been there for me through some of the best and worst times of my life. The offseason is great, because I can come here and learn from and have converse with fellow die-hard fans, some of whom I consider actual experts.

As for this season, I have very mixed emotions. I see 2 serious flaws: the lack of pass rush, and of course the OL.

Schobel getting older and stronger could help the rush, along with the emergence of Kelsay. It is certainly possible that these guys can raise their level of play.

As for the OL, we had better hope that:

    1) McNally is 1/2 as good as he is purported to be.

    2) Mike Williams needs to grow up, shrink, and stop being a burden to this football team in terms of production vs cap costs.

    3) They stay healthy.

If the above happens (admittedly a reach), anything else is possible. What I DO know is that I am ready for the season, and will see many of you on 10/31.

    Thanks again everyone. :D:w00t:

    GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Seriously though, Rudi is nothing more than a media whore. I had quite a bit of respect for McCain, until the past couple of months. He has obviously sold out to the Bushes and whether it was a promise of full support in 2008 or the promise that they would bury him in 2008, and he has experience with that, he is looking like a bought man.

If it came down to one of them I would probably vote for McCain, but it wouldn't be an easy thing to do. Anyway, I won't have to worry about that because Kerry will be running for reelection.

(Hey think I just changed from a dittohead to a lemming :( )

    14223

You are a supporter of "Ketchup Kerry," a waffling, pompous, whining weakling, and are calling Rudy a "media whore?" Why am I not surprised? Tell me, which portion of your liberal litmus test did he fail? He is pro gay rights and gun control. Are you?

You must have strong differences with him on his policies where he wants criminals in jail, and believes in a strong national defense policy, right? He is also VERY pro-Israel. How does that sit?

You liberals are looking more and more like isolated fools as each day passes.

  11. Glad you posted this topic. I saw the show last night as well and thought it was fantastic.

The story that Drew told about he and AVP driving to a game last year and seeing a group of kids playing sandlot ball was worth my entire month's DirecTV bill.

Catch it on a replay if you can.

    14205

I missed the part about Drew and AVP. Could somebody brief me?

    Thanks.

  12. If the choice were between Giuliani and McCain, for whom would you vote for President?

    13242

    Rudy all the way!!!!!!!!!

Rudy is a true leader. He is willing (unlike Kerry) to state his views, some of which run a tad to my left, but he is as strong as they come.

McCain talks primarily about campaign spending, and nobody cares, and if you think anyone does, just ask that idiot Rick Lazio. B)

  13. Actually, the anarchists protesting the RNC were also protesting the DNC as well.  They are hardly representative of the Democratic party.  And of course they're going to say the police response was brutal...they're friggin' anarchists.  They're dead set against the principle of law enforcing bodies.

What I really want to know, though, is why the Institute for Anarchist Studies has a .org website.  :D

    13185

Tom (and Mickey), I dont hold every democrat responsible for the actions of anarchists, but do maintain the belief that they have many supporters, and a substantial place within the ranks of the dem party itself.

Tom, there were women walking around on a 90 degree day with babies in strollers. They were carrying signs for what? You guessed it, abortion rights! :P;) Call me a crazy right winger, but when my kids were 2, I was reading to them, not parading them around demos in stifling heat.

Dont you think that the lunacy above turns off at least some mainstream voters? I do, and think that were it not for these (and other) wackos having such a loud voice in the party, the dems would be in power as we speak.

  14. Just to clarify, I never had a plan to sign all 3.  Actually, think that Schobel is the only one worth signing at this point.

    12537

I agree with this. If Jennings has a good season this year, he will command in the neighborhood of 6 million dollars per season, with a hefty bonus. He is a nice player, but I dont see him as an Orlando Pace type who is worth this and more. Besides, he seems to want out.

I agree with some of the negative statements about Schobel, but he is very fast, and he will probably get stronger. Also, he is now an experienced player at a position which seems to be hard to fill.

By waiting until next year to re-sign Schobel, TD gains the advantage of having a better picture of his injury situation, but is admittedly taking a risk of losing him. Also, by waiting, TD serves not to alienate the other two FAs. I have faith in TD in his FA dealings. The drafts are another story.

  15. Democrats at Work You know, the one who was beaten senseless by the anarchists, which make up (along with their sympathizers) a substantial portion of the democrat party. These same scumbags are calling the police response "brutal."

I do not know how a sane, sound person could be identified as a democrat. Honestly, I am sickened by the labor policies of the Bush Administration, but there is no chance that I would vote for waffling, "Ketchup Kerry" and support his band of marauders, burned out sixties hippies and apologetic liberals that dominate this party.

In any event, the Detective is said to now be stable and recovering, thanks to God.

  16. How frikkin stupid can these people be.

Ummm, Travis Henry. Ummmm, how many yards the past 2 seasons?

Hes either the second coming of Barry Sanders (who never had a good o-line) or the line isnt as bad as you think.

Drew is getting sacked so much in part because of o-line mistakes, but MOSTLY because of sitting back there so long last year and being a statue.

I love Drew and I think this O is setup to put him back in the very good QB category.

Mark my words, the Bills will get another 1000+ with Travis and will go to the playoffs. Bledsoe gets 20-30 sacks, and Moulds goes backto the pro-bowl.

    WAKE UP.

The o-line is fine if we get the running yards, everything goes from there. Our pass is open, our WR are open because of the stacked line anticipating the run. Travis got 1000+ the last 2 years, why will this year be different?

    12195

Honestly, WHO is dumb, one who sees a problem or one who buries their head in the sand?

Run blocking is MUCH easier for off. linemen than is pass blocking. On a run, the offensive players know the count, and are able to fire out. On passing downs, the defensive players have the momentum, and the blockers are backing up.

Last season, Ruben Brown could actually block on running plays, but folded like an accordian when asked to protect the qb. MW is a fat slob who players run past. Teague was over-matched and there was NO credible RG, nor has there been one for 10 years. Jennings was good, but often injured, and not a premier LT when healthy.

If the above mess satisfies you, then by all means, insult the fans who want more.

  17. I have not one play of the Bills in pre-season.

That said, I am asking if those who have think that the OL has improved? Thus far (and it is admittedly early), is McNally the savior that many purported him to be? Also, how is Big Mike playing, and he is stiil weighing more than 400?

I dont even know how TB was injured. Was he running or in the pocket? If so, who missed the block?

In all, I wish for a speedy recovery for Losman, who should never have been drafted in the first place. Behind a sub-par OL, ANY qb will be mauled and mangled. This is our last 10 years as Bills fans, and it apparently will go on.

I hope that if we sign a new backup qb, he can run for his life ala Flutie, because if McNally is not the guru of blocking that he was alleged to be (and his OL sucked last season), Drew will be lucky to last even a few games, and we will of course NOT have a first round pick in 05.

I look forward to the season, but it does look bleak to me in terms of winning football games, unless those of you who actually watched the games can tell me someting good that I am missing.

  18. She was standing in the street - in fact she was in a line of people who were blocking the street praying. The van pulled up to the line, paused, and then ran through the line. PEople were tossed like bowling pins!

And to the bastard that doubted "my account" -  :I starred in Brokeback Mountain: - I had nightmares about that scene for months afterwords. I also saw people run over by police motorcycles.

The woman and the others WERE BREAKING THE LAW - civil disobedience like Rev. Matin Luther King, Jr. and Ghandi -  however, the police response was not lawfull. There is an escalating level of response that they must follow. AND UNDER NO CICUMSTANCES DOES IT ALLOW FOR BOWLING OVER PEOPLE WITH A AUTOMOBILE! That sounds a bit like something we see in other countries, and that scares me.

And to others who say that the protestors start the violence -  :I starred in Brokeback Mountain: - I have been pepper sprayed and tear gassed - I have been arrested for possessing a cell phone! I have had friends who were arrested for standing a corner with a walkie-talkie and had their bail set at $1,000,000! I have seen these things. There will be 250,000 people in NYC protesting - and over 249,000 will be peacefull protesters exercising their right to protest and asking the government to adress their grievances.

I want a country that allows protest - and responses to protests from governments is scary. When did our founding fathers invision a day when dissenting citizens would be placed in pens, and cages that are called "free-speech zones" in our Orwellian world! Even if you disagree with all my politics this MUST disturb you. This is a trend that must stop.

As Ty said in Caddyshack: "this isn't Russia is it? No I didn't think so."

    10098

I tried to NOT respond to this, and your other idiotic post. My failure to resist is an admitted lack of discipline. Oh well, nobody is perfect.

You sir, are an utter jerk-off. stevestojan heads like you and your scummy ilk are compromising the safety of my friends, family and community.

Do you know that two persons were arrested today for conspiracy to blow up subway stations, a police station, and other places in NYC? Do you care (other than to defend those who would do so)?

While these naked, diseased psychotics are draining police resources, people are plotting to kill us.

I believe in the right to protest, and have participated in demonstrations. That said, this is NOT the time to drain NYC of the people it needs to protect us. There are douchebags following police officers with camcorders in order to film police officers being "rude" to nude nuts. I guess this makes you happy, but to me, it makes you an enemy to the safety of our country, and again, a douchebag. A weak, silly, idealistic douche.

One last thing...In the 80s, there were Gay S&M bars in NYC. They had fitting names such as "Ramrods" and "The Meat Rack."

In one of these places, there were stockades, into which men locked themselves with their pants down. Can you imagine the rest? At the time, Gay activists blamed AIDS on Ronald Reagan and George Bush Sr. Sound right to you?

These nude protestors are of a similar ilk, and they will sicken American voters. This, ever so sadly, is a huge base of the democrat party to which I am sure you cling. Truth be told, your stalwart, "Ketchup Kerry" is a billionaire.

I merely offer the above as proof that you are a mislead, weak, mean, mentally unsound, non-caring fool.

You are also a loser, and a scumbag.

  19. I agree with many of the posts, but I think his drafts deserve an overall grade of C.  The first, in 2001, was strong.  But 2002 and 2003 have, so far, been disappointing.  I realize it takes a number of years before one can accurately judge a draft, but I see a lot of disappointments in M. Williams, Reed, Sullivan Wire and Denney.  I aslo wonder about Kelsay, Sobieski, Pucillo, Aiken and Crowell.  Some of these guys need to step-up befoer we can say that Donahoe deserves a higher grade.  Time will tell, but drafting guys that are back-up types or marginal starters won't get us to the Superbowl.

    10267

I agree. After TD's first draft, the rest ranged from OK to horrid. Does anyone remember the old menu at Burger King? We are stuck with a 36 million dollar "Whaler, Heavy on the Tarter" with the #4 pick in a draft. Were it not for some great free agency pickups, this alone should place TD's job in jeopardy, imo.

Additionally, neglecting the OL in this draft was a grave error imo. Like many on this board, TD seems to think that McNally will turn below average journeymen into quality blockers. I hope it happens, but should it fail to (which is likely), I hope he loses his job.
