1. Good god, you are hoping for a line with four changes on it from last year......the C to RT did a solid job for most of last year as they got used to each other and benefitted from having McNally around, it is bad enough we have to revamp the left side with (hopefully) two new starters but to mess with almost the whole line seems insane.

Keep C-RG-RT the way it is, plus in a couple of new bodies on the left side, and hopefully next year our line play will be sufficient (for the first time since ????).

    265182

I agree BBF. Teague would probably be the smallest RT in the league. His size and agility suit him better for OC or LT.

  2. Not defending JP at all, Bill. Still I don't keep trying to tell my daughter "'you  don't deserve a chance, since you'll probably fail " everyday either. Call me crazy. It's not in my person.  :o

Begs the question why ? Mularkey explained he wanted a lot more from that position and wanted the switch. Ask him. I found it humorous in an earlier posting that a  DB supporter deferred credit away from Big Ben R. for the Steelers success. Said the Steelers won due to the Running game, the D etc. Stated you couldn't rely on Big Ben to win a game for you. ( These are comments regarding a Rookie, mind you )

Yet these same observations about 11 year Vet DB were always shouted down. LOL !

    265177

I also think there were those personal (Pittsburgh) issues as well.

As for the Steelers, Big Ben DID win some games, but imo, nothing takes the place of a strong, deep offensive line. This was (again, imo) the key to the Steelers success. That is why qbs named Williams and Rypien have superbowl rings, or so I see it.

  3. No argument whatsover on having doubts. But Bledsoe was a QB that Mularkey and Co. wanted OFF the roster. There is little doubt about it. As for handing the QB job to an unproven high draft pick, that's been done hundreds of times in NFL history. Hell, the Bills have done so with Richie Lucus, James Harris, Dennis Shaw, Joe Ferguson, Todd Collins. Kelly came from the USFL and was handed the job, without any NFL experience, if you wish to get technical.

In the Cap age, this is even more likely to happen. John Kitna went to the Pro Bowl with Cinci, only to be handed a clipboard behind Carson Palmer in 2004.

JP will get yanked in a heartbeat if he's completely befuddled and losing us games. The Bills believe Holcomb will make good decisions and keep us in the game. (Unlike Bledsoe, who could blow up many a game with galling turnovers) Holcomb will be 32 come the 2005 season and has around 3,800 yards for his entire career. If he was starting material, he would have kept his job in Cleveland. JP is raw but has 3 times the athletic ability Holcomb has. I'll defer to the coaching staff, especially Wyche (who developed Joe Montana as the San Fran QB coach under Walsh and also Boomer Esiason in Cinci. ).

    >>>>No argument whatsover on having doubts. But Bledsoe was a QB that Mularkey and Co. wanted OFF the roster.<<<<

This is completely true, but it begs the question, "WHY?"

Imo, TD and MM, both Pittsburgh guys, viewed the season ender with the Steelers as Norwood's miss, or Buckner's error. Methinks there were some personal issues floating around.

That said, this is history. They made their decision, and all we can do is hope the best for JP.

As for the stats of KH, do you think they matter much? He, like Kitna, was stuck behind the 1st pick of a draft, and he hurt his shoulder. You were not impressed one iota by DB's gaudy stats? Why make an issue of stats wrt KH?

    Defending our child prodigy are we?  :o  ;)  ;)  :(  :(

I'm excited about the upcoming season, since I believe the QB position has improved with JP and Holcomb on the roster. I'm a glass half full kind of person and aware of all the revisionist history of football.

  4. 1) After coming into camp as a beached whale last season, he DID pick up his game.

    2) His play declined drastically when CV was not in there.

    3) I do not understand why people think, from a football standpoint, that he can play LT. When Big Mike gets beat, it is usually by speed rushers. JP has thrown 5 passes. Do you really want MW on his blindside? I do not.

    4) While is cap number IS obscene, a true pro bowl season would serve to ease the pain. He has not approached this yet. I hope he cares.

    5) There is ZERO reason for Big Mike to renegitiate his deal. Looking at what MacKenzie (RT) got from the Giants, MW probably would not even mind being cut. Less than stellar play at times notwithstanding, he would command a signing bonus BIGGER THAN his 9 mil. cap hit.

    6) If he does not produce in a big way this season, #5 will rapidly change. He could be cut after 06/01/06 and it would not hurt the Bills very much.

In summary, this imo is the do or die year so to speak for MW as far as the Bills are concerned. If he steps up to a level of greatness at RT (certainly possible), his cap figure, although high, will be easier to live with, considering the money that other RTs are getting. They ARE catching up.

In 05, he will have CV next to him and will not be saddled with Travis Henry to miss blitzers and make him look bad.

I am hopeful that MW will finally step up and give us a complete season of effort and hard work, and be a pro-bowl RT, which is a great thing for any football team to have.

    Cautiously hopeful.

  5. I think the Coles deal really puts them up against it cap wise.

    Lawless in NY

Honestly, I don't think the Bills have interest in Law either.  I would redo and extend Nate right now.  Something like $14 M SB and $37 Million for 6 years....  The guy is a perennial pro bowler in the making (this past year begins the streak) and this is market value--if we structure it like this...I am still pissed about the Jacksonville play--but he is a stud corner who likes Buffalo--just pay him.

    Cap hits in parenthesis

    05  750K      ($2.08M--about $2.5 M in cap savings this year)

    06  $1.25 M  ($2.55M)

    07  $4 M        ($5.33M)

    08  $5 M        ($6.33M)

    09  $5.5 M        ($6.83 M)

    10  $6.5 M        ($7.83M)

This is $1 M More contract value and $1M in gauranteed money than Ken Lucas's contract with the Panthers...

    264814

Good job on those numbers, and good post! The problem is, I doubt NC would accept it. Smoot wants much more, but hey, you never know.

  6. What Buffalo Bill do you think will step up this year and push a starter for playing time? It always a player you least expect.

    My picks are.....

Offense = Jason Peters and Kelly Holcomb

Defense= Rashad Baker and Angelo Crowell

    264748

    Holcomb for sure, and Stamer.

  7. Ok, I'll admit Holliday was possibly a little older, and production had definitely cut back from when he wa with Green Bay, but you can't argue with Carter. Wow, if this is true, it might make my whole weekend!

    264800

Any word on what is happening with Surtain?

  8. I am truly surprised at how many people are suggesting the Mike Williams to LT position switch... I mean, what other LT in the NFL carries as much weight as MW?  Is anyone within 20 lbs?  I think MW would get JP killed at LT by RDE's that do a beep-beep routine right around his fat ass.

    264683

Agreed. I do not see him as even close to being agile enough to play LT.

  9. That (their ST's play) is probably the ONLY reason they're still Bills.  But they're not worth the money they're getting, just to play ST's.

    264631

Perhaps not, but I am going to go out on a limb here and state that if these guys were not Buffalo Bills last season, we very well might have suffered another loss. Same could be said for Stamer, Crowell and Hagan (sic?).

I paid more attention to kick coverage in 04 than ever before, or at least since the days of Pike/Tasker. These guys were excellent.

I know that the cap mandates some ugly decisions, but it would be a pity to lose these guys. I just dont know how easily replaceable they would be on STs. ;)

  10. I'm not as convinced that it was a good deal for the Bills.  $23M over 5 years is a lot of money,  especially for the third best starter on the Bills defensive line (well,  now he's the 2nd best).  Schobel is a little better than average,  but he does not command double teams and is not someone I think opposing teams really worry much about.

    264362

I think that it was a great signing, and that AS, had he waited, would have received approx. 7-10 million dollars more. Not because he is great. Jonas Jennings isn't great either, nor is MacKenzie (sic) from the jests, and these guys just got staggering bonuses.

I think that the Bills DEs will do a bit more stunting this year. It may sound crazy, but SA and PW were SOOO big that there was often no space for a DE to go inside. ;) AS also played better vs. the run last year, and due to his great speed, was always good in pursuits.

In summary, is AS great? No. Is he a bargain at today's prices? I think so.

  11. Bye-Bye Coy!  Bye-Bye Pierson!

    263885

Maybe so, but our special teams would suffer a great deal. Both of those guys made a huge difference on kick coverage, which imo is playing a more and more important role in this league with each passing season.

  12. I don't think that trading Nate is the plan by any means, but I think that he has played very good football for the Bills since his rookie year.  His improvement has been gradual, because he was good from the start.  It's not like a Drew Brees situation where he sucked for a few years, then bloomed.

They've gotten a lot of on-field production out of Nate and if they signed Law, then traded Nate for a 1st round pick then that would make sense.  This years draft is strong at CB.  Very simply, that option beats not getting Law, then losing Nate for nothing in FA.  Using TD logic, Law is a player who is open to negotiation at this point and Nate might not be, and he could conceivably feel Clements is as good as gone after next season.

It's all speculation based on nothing we've heard, but it does make sense and it isn't uncommon for TD to surprise fans with unexpected moves.

    264221

Agreed Badol. Nate is a very good player, but I cannot imagine TD giving him the 50 million dollar contract he will undoubtably demand. Looking at the recent ufa signings, this number is not far fetched.

As for placing the Franchise Tag on him next year, I for one do not wish to allot 10% of the teams' salary cap to a cornerback (approx 9 million), and hopefully neither does TD.

No matter how this goes down, imo it is all but certain that NC will not be a Buffalo Bill in 06. I hope that we get something for him.

  13. Nice one, Bill ;)  Couldn't agree more with what you said.

    264474

    Why thank you! :D

CV is probably THE most under rated player on the Buffalo Bills football team.

He is tough, smart and mean. It is easy to focus on the ball and say "MaGahee is great!" Hey, he is, but were it not for tough guys up front, the best of the "skill players" would be rendered useless.

If the Bills could sign or draft the CV equivalent at LG, a player such as Teague would have a MUCH easier time at LT. This is what I have always wanted for our Buffalo Bills. We are a cold weather franchise. We need huge, mean, angry men who can block others and control the football. This is the way for the Bills to win football games.

Looking back, the Bills had a GREAT defense in the past. We had Speilman, Paup, Big Ted, Cowart, Hansen, and of course, Bruce. The team however was weighted down by the likes of Loucheiy, Ostroski, Farris, Panos, Spriggs, Fina, and every other loser playing OL.

Imo, CV is a LEAP in the right direction of making the Buffalo Bills a team of tough guys on the offensive side.

TD should receive nothing but praise for this signing.

  14. Ross Tucker

    264451

Teague at LT and Tucker at OC would not surprise me even a little.

Of course, this would mandate at least 1 competent OG through free agency or the draft. Truthfully, I want one of each.

The thing is, we have a glaring need at CB that simply must be addressed, and we need a backup RB.

Looking at this calmly, these are needs that dont seem to hard to fill.

    GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. ...I just have to get it off of my chest. Bear with me, please:

    1. Hiring Gregg Williams.

    2. 2002 draft, day 1.

    3. Not outright releasing Drew Bledsoe after the 2003 season.

    4. Not making the playoffs in 2003 or 2004.

    5. Not respecting the kicker position in football.

    6. Overpaying for guys at certain positions - Troy Vincent at FS, Teague at C, MW at RT, Villarial at RG, Prioleau and Wire at backup SS, etc...

    7. Building a team with the stars focused at the LB and offensive "skill" positions rather than upfront on the OL and DL.

    8. Already being at the salary cap limit for 2005, only 2 years following the period where we were unofficially out of "salary cap jail."

To be fair, there is a lot of good that TD has brought to the Bills. I'm not going to bother with that whole list - since this is meant to be a TD-bashing thread - but most notably I'm happy with his past 2 drafts and with his outstanding job in marketing the Bills in such an economically depressed area.

But back to the negatives, I guess I'm just not at all happy with the way this offseason is going - no, not because we didn't resign JJ and PW (I fully understand and agree with those decisions) - but because we don't have any money to address the OL like I thought it was going to finally be in 2005 after 10+ years of subpar Bills play at this position...

As of now, this is (probably) our starting front 5:

    LT: Teague

    LG: Gandy

    C: Tucker

    RG: Villarial

    RT: Williams

WTF??? The whole left side is atrocious, from Teague on over to Tucker. Certainly not adequate for a team wanting to play "smash-mouth" football and to block for a rookie QB. Unless there is somehow more free agent improvement along the front lines of our offense, you can look to a lot more league-leading zero-to-negative yard carries for Willis in 2005.

I can already see the replies - if any - that may follow:

    1. Kelso, you're an idiot.

    2. Kelso, you think you're smarter than TD and McNally?

    3. Kelso, why is your helmet so !@#$ing huge?

    4. Kelso, have some patience. The offseason is still young.

But before sending such replies, ask yourself this:

If you're so sure that TD knows what's best for our team, then why haven't we made the playoffs since he got here? And why did other teams like the Eagles, Vikings, Chargers, and Jets make the playoffs in 2004 with a fraction of our payroll?

So isn't it possible that TD is not making the best decisions for our Bills, with respect to the other 31 GM's in the league that could have been doing a better job in the past 4 years for Mr. Wilson?

Just some thoughts from an idiot fan,

    -KH

    263679

KH, I am not going to address the entire post. Some of it I agree with, some I don't, but he did NOT overpay for Villarial!!!!!

CV played his ass off and imo played a HUGE role in the improvement of Big Mike. As a matter of fact, when CV got hurt, Big Mike looked rather pedestrian. CV is EXACTLY the RG that the Buffalo Bills football team needed. All of our RGs have literally sucked since Davis.

JP is an unproven commodity. CV will help him in every way. He will make MW a better player. He will make MaGahee run better. He will buy him time to throw. He will help him roll out. He will pick up stunts.

I think that you truly underestimate this player, no?

  16. The Bills Zone & Buffalo Bills.com message boards are saying he's going to be traded. But I can't believe that bullcocky. Is this rumor true, if so the Bills will get themsleves a top-10 pick!

    263523

Prepare to be scorned and ridiculed for even suggesting this.

Personally, while I don't view this as probable, I see it as somehow possible, but only if the Bills traded for Surtain, or something of the sort. He WOULD bring a high pick. Top ten? Not so sure, but certainly close.

We are as thin as paper at cb, and NC can play.

    Very interesting, however unlikely.

  17. No.  But I'm not the guy inking the contract, either.

I have a feeling he'll restructure and stay put but sometimes the things people say and write make guys want a fresh start.  As far as not playing to the level expected, there are more than enough reasons why that is so and most of them aren't on Big Mike.

    263496

I mostly agree with you. He played next to garbage for 2 years, and had Travis Henry helping out on blitzes, a certain recipe for disaster. His coaching was also less than stellar until Coach McNally rode into town. Interestlingly, he played poorly when CV was hurt.

What I DONT excuse was his arriving at camp as a beached whale.

The truth is, if he plays RT like Erik Allen or Bob Brown did, the hit would be easier to live with, but he has yet to do so.

Big Mike is one of several players that needs to really step up in 05, along with both DEs. If they do, I expect the Bills to make the playoffs, as long as the qb position is managed properly. ;)

  18. Hey, maybe he's betting on TV putting another big hurt on JP in training camp!

    http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/8253862

"Holcomb is a good fit, with experience as both a backup and starter. Bauer said he's already informed the Bills that Holcomb would have no problem playing behind Losman.

Holcomb's deal includes incentives based on playing time and if he should take over as starter for any reason."

    263494

I have ZERO problems with KH having incentives built into his contract. If he earns, or is thrust into a starting role, he should be paid more.

Certainly I am in the minority here, but I expect a qb battle at least at some point in the season.

    May the better qb win!

  19. Unless he's angry about the way he's been treated by the Buffalo media and fans and just wants to play out his deal rather than add years here.  Can't say I'd blame him given what we see here on a daily basis.

    262647

AD, he would not have to have his little feelings hurt by what you described if he played up to first round level, let alone the #4 pick of an entire draft.

Yes, his play did improve last season, but 9 mil. is obscene for what he has produced to date. Simply obscene, and I am not overly concerned with his feelings.

    Are you?
