1. I beg to differ. There's plenty of deadwood that can be chopped and restructuring of contracts that could go on. Granted, I don't understand all the nuances of salary cap/contracts, but if there's a will then there's a way. If teams like Tampa, Oakland and even last year's San Diego can find ways to sign high profile players, then someone as clever as TD can find a way. The return on a player like EJ could translate in either draft picks or current veteran players who could fill needs for us, then this could be the value move.

At some point, you may arrive at the conclusion that TH has little to no trade value. Edge for Travis, huh? While not as ridiculous as Travis straight up for Gallery, this is just another home team wishful thinking post.

As we speak, TH has an agent trying to make a trade, and GM who is eagerly waiting to dump him. Where are the offers?

Do you think for a second that Peyton Manning would allow the mentally challenged Travis Henry on his team? These players have seen the missed blocks, falling on his face, wrong passing routes, etc.

Dont be too surprised if he isn't released outright, because other teams know he will not be a Buffalo Bill in 05.

I do however TOTALLY agree with you that he should have been dumped before the 04 season, when he did have some value.

  2. I just think that Henry would be an excellent fit for Peyton Manning and the Colts.

    268966

So do I. After Travis misses a few blocks and Manning winds up in traction, we wouldn't have to worry about the Colts winning too many games.

Edge is a complete player. When he can maintain his footing, Travis is a decent runner. Other than that, he does nothing well. Besides, can you imagine Travis trying to figure out all of those Indy audibles? :D

  3. Does anybody remember the televised game during which buildings were burning down behind the centerfield fence of Yankee Stadium? It was totally visible to the TV audience.

Howard Cossell was the announcer, and was flipping out about "urban blight," etc.

Was this during one of the Yankee/Dodgers world series of 77/78?

    Thanks.

  4. Oh boy is that a loaded question.....

    - If the rest of the team is playing well and he is stinking it up soley by himself......game 3

    - If he is playing pretty well but we are losing games anyway.....game 6

    - If he is making plays and we are either losing or winning.....NEVER

Great answer John! Hopefully, the coaches will not put JP in too many situations where he will be able to "lose football games" for the Bills.

I mean, they tried to do that with Drew, right?

But LA, if this kid is a bust, I think that we will know before too long, and I will only wait until I see the playoffs slipping away before calling for him to be benched.

  5. I think there were a lot of factors which led to the Bills braintrust being solidly behind starting Bledsoe even after an 0-4 start and the same would be true for JP if this misfortune falls upon us again.

Among the reasons for sticking with Bledsoe were:

    1. He was still the Bills best option for winning games unless you had some psychotic belief in Matthews or psychotic hatred for Bledsoe.

    2. TD and the Bills had just stupidly over-invested in Bledsoe restructuring and resigning him after a putrid 03 and egos were on the line.

    3. Bledsoe was not the sole or even the leading cause of the 0-4 start and simply changing QBs (particularly to Matthews) was not likely at all to reverse the Bills fortunes.

    4. MM believed in his approach and his choices and stuck with them feeling that the teams results would turn around if they stuck with his approach.

There were probably other reasons of import, but the lesson to take for consideration of the leash on JP is that were the Bills to get off to a horrible start. a lot depends on how this happens.  If the results occur because of Losman errors he is more likely to get benchhed.  However, if we lose because of a last minute opponent drive when JP left the field with a lead, even though one could fault the QB for not leading the team to a 30 point lead so an aooponent could not pull off an upset like the Jags did in Buffalo last season JP will be stuck with.

    Great post FFS!!!

Early in 04, MW was out of shape, CV was dinged up, WM was off the field (meaning Travis Henry was on it). These factors weighed heavily on the 0-4 start. It will remain impossible for some to grasp, but the 0-4 certainly was not all the fault of Drew.

As for JP, assuming he can win the job, he deserves a fair chance to show what he can do. I would not wanted to see him pulled out unless he is the primary reason for the Bills losing games. It would be unfair to expect the kid to be great overnight.

That said, he should not be allowed to kill the season for us if his performance is dreadful.

  6. Which players on the board at the time were better than either A.W. or R.B.?  I'm not asking which players developed into better pros - I'm saying which players available were more ready to step in and contribute than the 2 guys we picked?  Since both have started pretty much every game they were healthy enough to...

They are simply examples of players who fit both sides of the argument.

You're telling me if a game changing player is on the board, a guy who can step in and play right now like a J. Vilma, you're going to ignore that guy and pick a guy who plays a position you're thin at even though that guy is probably never going to be more than average (Eric Flowers)?  Sorry, don't see it - especially when there are always low priced veteran stopgaps around (Hank Poteat ring a bell? - played in the friggin AFC Championship game and SB for the Pats after not being on a roster all year).

The point that you raise is a solid one. I am thinking that the immediate impact player you describe might be harder to get in round 2.

AD, I would not want the Bills to pass up a clearly superior player in order to fill a need. I do however believe that if there is a negligible difference in talent, the Bills will jump on a CB because they have little to no choice.

  7. As of yet, teams don't put the same emphasis on guards and centers in the first round that they do tackles.  Good ones, very good ones, can be found in round 2.  Actually, most of the guards and centers will be taken after the first round.  But, I do think that there will be a few guards taken in the 2nd, possibly before we pick.  Even still, there will be a good interior OL available when our pick comes up.

    266427

My friend, I hope to see us go with a blocker with our first pick, but I have been hoping this every season for years on end. Thomas, Steinbach and most of all Hutchinson are some of the names that I was screaming for when we went in other directions.

Do you really think that we will not draft a cb with our 1st selection? (Not what you want, what you think)

  8. Because that's how you end up with guys like Erik Flowers and Travares Tillman.  But don't let little things like facts get in the way...  <_<

    266828

AD, you could also wind up with Winfield or R. Brown.

The way I view this draft, it is seemingly impossible for the Bills to NOT grab a cornerback early. You have seen what the UFAs are getting. The Bills keeping Clements in 06 appears to be no better than a toss-up at best at this point. There is a glaring need there.

Also, we absolutely must solidify the OL. Even if we sign a UFA OG, injuries happen, and I look to Pitt as an example of what a cold weather team can do with a strong, deep OL.

Anyway, imo, sometimes best player available is the way to go, and sometmes not. As much as I want the Bills to grab blockers, I have a feeling they will jump on a cb.

  9. One bad apple doesn't represent the good 99.99999 % police officers. I'm sure he's in hot water now.

    >>>>>Apparently, the cop with the captain was upset, too.

He did not want to ticket the dad but was strong-armed by his superior, police sources said.<<<<<

Thank you Mark. The above quote is telling. Captains are tortured by Police Brass to show how they improve the "quality of life." So, this scared, ambitious Captain ordered the poor cop to write a summons about Girl Scout Cookies. And you guys wonder why there is a union?

In the last 5 years, more than 1/2 of the force has retired. Many supervisors are inexperienced. They are not all bad mind you, but one cannot place a high enough value on experience wrt police work. Experience and common sense.

  10. Hambrick licks nuts anyhow.

    266240

What is wrong with him? Can't he block? Does he drop passes and run wrong routes. Does he fumble? Does he have off field issues? Does he fall on his behind in front of huge holes on crucial plays? How is his W/L record as a starter in the NFL?

Yeah, who would want a back like that?! :huh:0:)

  11. When and if we sign Nate (and I'm for signing him at $6M per year) the first thing MM should do is take him off freakin' punt return duty. That's an accident waiting to happen, and he's not worth the 5 extra yards he might get.

We have other punt returners on the squad, and there are some good WR in the draft who return kicks.

    265977

I dont think we could EVER get him for 6 mil per season, but I fully agree about the punt return issue!

Last season, both our starting corners were returning kicks....a disaster waiting to happen. Just ask Jason Sehorn.

CBs are now to costly imo to place at such risk.

  12. You might not accept the team's record over the last 4 years as dispositive on the issue of whether TD has not done all that well so far but to consider it to be lacking in logic enough to warrant a rude slam like "moron" is over the line.  It is a reasonable position and frankly, it is the main standard all NFL GMs are measured by.  Lose enough often enough and you lose your job.  You asked for details, I gave some without turning the post into a marathon, eye baking mess.  I don't think personal insults are ever justified on the board unless in response to a personal attack against yourself or, on some occasions, others.

I don't dispute that TD has made some good moves however, he has made plenty of mistakes and the team's performance on the field is not entirely unrelated to his mistakes.  Five years is pretty long for any GM to serve without getting into the post season.  This could very well be a make or break year for him.  I don't claim that my position is the only one or that there is no way on earth I could possibly be wrong here.  I simply think he was brought here to build a winner so it is high time they started winning.

    265939

Mickey, I see your points, but do you give TD any slack for playing for a relatively "poor" owner, and starting with a complete mess, which included no defense, no, cap room, no qb and an OL that was neglected for 6-8 years?

  13. You're coming closer to reality, Bill.

AD, I probably seem like much more of a "republican" than I am.

When the dems can offer me something better than Gore, Kerry or Hillary, I will be all ears. I voted for Bush because of his foreign policy, and because I perceive Kerry to be a weak, waffling punk who is married to a fag-hag. Can I make this any more plain? :P

Btw, my favorite politician in the USA at this time is a democrat.... Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy.

  14. i dont know if i should be happy or mad. they loose a great player, but they also cut steroid boy and gain 3 mil. in cap space.  :P

    Dolphins | Boston Cut - from www.KFFL.com

    Mon, 7 Mar 2005 12:59:14 -0800

MiamiDolphins.com reports the Miami Dolphins announced they have terminated the contract of WR David Boston.

    265854

How can they gain that much cap space? He had no signing bonus for them to eat?

  15. Let's see.....Sharpton is calling on the FCC to ban song lyrics he does not like. Liberal professors penalize students on college campuses if they speak up as conservatives.

Not to be outdone, repubs are in a tizzy about Howard Stern, and are contemplating regulation of satellite radio and premium cable tv.

No matter which side of the aisle you are on, one truly HAS to give credit to politicians for diverting the masses to issues that mean little to nothing!

The deficit is rising. Cities are crumbling. Solution? No smoking in bars, no freedom of speech and censor and fine Howard Stern!

I am glad I can come here and vent because frankly, it is a hopeless case. It was bad enough with the straight-laced old fogeys, and the holier than thou liberal yuppies, but now Reverend Sharpton has joined the fold!

    A friggin mess indeed! <_<:devil::P

    What a "Liberal!"

  16. A simple question, how do we know these 4 are better than TD?  I agree the GM of the PATS is better than TD.  I ground that assertion in data and from where I look the PATS GM just won a superbowl.  However, other than that what is the criteria to which we can judge these other GM's?  Moreover, if each environment (salary cap, player development, coaching competency, a meddling owner, etc) in which they work is different that tends to compromise any measure of validity.

Seriously, I am not being facetious here, but when people want to judge things it can be pretty irritating to hear generalities and absolutes about performance thrown around like hard evidence.

I was a believer in DB, yet I had no problem seeing him go based on the hard data that he underperformed.  His performance assessment (that he was a poor QB) passed every test of validity I could think of (construct, face, criterion, concurrent, convergent, and predictive) as such I agree......let him go.

However, assesssing a GM is a whole different ball game.  It is either simple (winning a superbowl) or complex (measures you and I do not even know exist).

I prefer to keep assessing a GM simple.  As such, the only good ones are the one's that win a superbowl (sorry Polian).

There is no data or evidence to for sure indicate there are 4 better GM's out there better than TD (unless you uncover those that have guided a team to a SB victory).

As a result, I return to my question what are you basing the performance on?  Once that is answered, there will be no reason to continue throwing the verbal "slings" that have been occuring in this thread.

Debate is good if there is a purpose.  If not, it is counterproductive.

    265774

IM, just to give you a more accurate picture of what I said, the question was more along the lines of who was more productive, or who did a better job.

I was not stating that the 4 men I mentioned are "better" than TD. Each operate under different owner, and have different wallets from which to work. Also, they all started from a different ground zero if you will.

    Certainly you see the difference.
