it was clear he was mocking Rex today with his big chuckles talking about Rex's press conference. IMO he was acting like the typical elitist NYC snob mocking a guy like Rex with an over abundance of folksy charm. It seems clear to me that Rex's style and persona is a perfect match for Buffalo and the team.

Who will the Bills bring in at QB?
1billsfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't expect anything to happen until after the draft. The Rams, Bears, Redskins, Broncos, ect. all are going to wait to see what shakes out in the first two rounds of the draft in terms of QBs. If one of these teams picks a QB in the first or second round then there's an opening for the Bills to trade for one of these starting QBs. If they don't, then they are for sure staying put with what they have. So it's probably going to be a long wait to see who the Bills bring in to compete with Manuel. -
Sammy's going to get the ball. Rex's son plays for Clemson and is good friends with Watkins. That was meant to be a total diss of Doug Marrone. Sammy is going to get a lot of balls thrown at him this year! That first game agains the Pats when he was thrown to three times made me sick and was the game I officially wanted Marrone gone.

Mike Glennon is a statue in a league where QBs increasingly will need "legs" to succeed. The speed on defense just gets quicker and quicker every year. I'm looking forward to seeing what Roman does for Manuel. Alex Smith went from an average of 71 QB rating to a 90 QB rating the season he was first coached by Roman. Also, Roman made Kaepernick a real threat for a couple of years. I think EJ will solidify the QB position with much improved play this year under Roman.

Bills GM wants next coach to revive EJ Manuel
1billsfan replied to Joaquin1119's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think fans need to come to realize "viable option" means scrap heap QBs like Sanchez, Glennon, Hoyer or McCown. It's funny that as bad as many here think EJ Manuel is, it's very hard to find a free agent QB who would supplant him as the starter. If I were the Bills I'd sign Kellen Moore (QB, Lions), draft a QB in the 3rd or 5th round and be done with it. I think Moore might be a true NFL starter who just hasn't got his chance in a real game. He's looked great in preseason games. The Bills need to keep their options open for next season if Manuel plays poorly this next season, maybe a Rothlesburger, E. Manning or Brees (a team possibly looking to do a top down rebuild) go on the block for a trade. -

Going by that chart, Manuel is near 50% on a passes 30-40 yard passes either being caught or called a drop by the receiver. That range just might be his "wheel house". I'm not saying he's great, just that I think he's got a feel for the deep pass and that the deep passing game should be expanded in the new offense. With more reps doing it those percentages should get better. -

You're talking about 3 or 4 passes combined with Tuel and Thad compared to EJ's 14 game sample size? That's ridiculous. All I'm saying is that I think EJ throws a very good deep ball. It's one of his positives that were never accentuated because of Morrone's "don't take any chances" offense. The Bills need to let EJ throw it deep 5 or 6 times a game and live with 1 extra interception per game doing this, because I think it would lead to 10 extra points per game for the Bills. I see a 10:5 ratio of added points for us and added points for them if they take that many shots down field. It would also have the added benefit of loosening up the defense for the running game. -

I think that EJ has shown clutch play in the fourth quarter of tight games. SJ and Chandler are the two that harpooned the 2013 season in the game against the Falcons. EJ hit them both on key pass plays that would have set them up for the win. He's also shown the ability in his limited opportunities of hitting WRs on deep patterns. -

Yet Manuel's stats 14 games in are mirror images of Tannehill's stats during his first 14 games including them having the exact same completion percentage. Also, Tannehill had Mike Sherman as his OC while Manuel had Hackett as his OC. He will never be Peyton Manning or Tom Brady in terms of accuracy, but IMO he can be an Eli Manning type of QB who goes on hot and cold streaks and gets on a roll come playoff time. Whatever they do I want them to start throwing about 5 or 6 "jump balls" deep down the field every game and let Watkins and Woods win most of those battles against the DBs. I don't care about interceptions that are like punts. Doing this consistently will open up huge holes in the running game. -

Now that Marrone is gone, let's see what he can do. I think many here are eager to see what this new OC can do with Manuel because they think that Marrone had no clue in what he was doing with him. -

I think you're right about that. Also, there seemed to be a palpable anger from the NFL media that there were no QBs like Luck, RGIII or Wilson in the subsequent 2013 draft. Every time they talked about the QBs it was with disgust and contempt. I see all of the QBs from that class as still works in progress including EJ and Geno. I also think without a doubt that Chip Kelly would have picked up EJ in the second round and he'd be playing very well in that system. EJ just needs someone to believe in him and let him play more loosely without fear of getting yelled at. I think that Roman will do this since he now has a QB who brings skills very close to what Kaepernick had in SF. -

I think that EJ Manuel does what he's told to do (to a fault) because that's how he was raised. I think that he was told by Marrone to not take any chances and he also told him not to run around anymore because they were afraid of him getting hurt. NFL defenses tightened down on what the Bills were doing in this regard and there was no longer any breathing room for Manuel or Orton to succeed in an offense that was so suffocating in conservative play calling. The very strange thing about how much Manuel gets bashed by fans and media alike is by go looking at his stats 14 games in and juxtaposing them with Tannehill's and Bortles' stats at the same time of games started. EJ has slightly better numbers than they do, yet has anyone ever heard anything close to what EJ has got as far as criticisms with those two QBs? Has anyone heard the conclusive declarations of "Miami's got no QB", or "Jacksonville has no QB" in the media and with fans? To me, I think a lot of people have gone way overboard in the Manuel bashing. EJ's numbers represent what everyone expected when he was drafted. Before he even played a down of football, if everyone on this board was told that Manuel would have 16 TDs/12 INTs/78.5 QB rating/1 fourth quarter comeback and 3 games winning drives after 14 games then they would be totally fine with those numbers because he was a "project" QB. I still think that Manuel could be the Bills franchise QB, just as Miami fans and media still think that Tannehill can be their long term franchise QB and the same with Jacksonville fans with Bortles. Thankfully EJ Manuel will finally have true professional training this time around. I can't wait to see if there's going to be a major jump in his level of play this year. -
NEW HEAD COACH: Rex Ryan! It's Official!
1billsfan replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
An "inspired" move would be to hire a guy like Kubiak who's team quit on him for an entire 16 game season???? Players love playing for Rex and the guy isn't wishy-washy about beating the Pats. He's not going to have his QB only throw the ball 3 times to Sammy Watkins against the Patriots like that wussy Marrone. That was the moment I wanted Marrone gone. Rex loves Sammy and he will make sure he gets thrown the ball a LOT and in turn Watkins will be giving Odell Beckham Jr. a real run for his money on who truly is the best WR is from that draft. -

John Harbaugh was laughed at for his "Flacco is the best QB and he'd take him over any QB" paraphrased comment. But think about it, Flacco always outperforms Brady head to head in the playoffs and Peyton Manning sucks in the playoffs compared to Flacco's record. So in all actuality, he probably would take Flacco over Brady and Manning in a playoff game. -
Fred Jackson, Coaching Search, tidbits
1billsfan replied to PaattMaann's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Schwartz, Jackson and Shurmer are the only retread head coaches I see that would accept the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. So let's just take Rex and Mike Shanahan off the list. I've read that Kyle is extremely well liked by his former players and I think he's more than ready for the job. I think the weirdness of him being so young will wear off and the media and fans will quickly realize that the Bills totally nailed it with his hire. Kyle Shanahan beats all three in regards to what the Bills need right now. He has the brightest offensive mind, he has been a successful offensive coordinator for a very long time now and he's been successful with three very different QB types (Shaub, RGIII, Hoyer) which means he's not married to a system but rather will build his system around the talent he has. Jim Schwartz was a buffoon as a head coach, Hue Jackson seems like he's too quick to get angry and Pat Shurmer was wall paper as a personality and face of the organization. Rumor has it that Dan Quinn will hire Kyle Shanahan as his OC when becomes the head coach of the Jets. Just know that Quinn is "THE MAN" as for who the hot head coaching candidate is. What's funny is that Kyle Shanahan actually has a much more impressive coaching resume than does Dan Quinn, and Quinn doesn't have a two time Superbowl winning head coach as a free consultant. After a year in NYC, Kyle Shanahan will be the hottest head coaching candidate out there. Anybody have any doubts about that? I hope that the Buffalo Bills do hire Kyle Shanahan as their next head coach and I hope that other Bills fans start showing some support for the move. -

Why? It actually would show that they are thinking outside of the box which is what anyone who is successful does. Following the pack of the other loser organizations that are looking for HCs isn't necessarily smart. Just look at what the Steelers and Ravens did when they hired their head coaches. No had ever heard of Harbaugh or Tomlin before. -

Wow, Kyle Shanahan would be a very bold move! If he gets the job then he absolutely nailed the interview on what the Bills did wrong this year on offense and how he'd fix it. I think I could get excited if he were the choice. I'd be good with Bevell, Reich or K. Shanahan. I just don't want a retread coach in which the Bills head coaching job was his "bottom of the barrel" last choice of where he wanted to be. -
True cost of Bills' Watkins trade
1billsfan replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Marrone would love for everyone like you to believe this bs. However, it's clear as day that Manuel's biggest problem was Marrone. If you couldn't see that our offense was horrific because it was so "high school" in it's predictability and safeness, then I don't think there's any need to continue debating the issue with you. -
I never heard or saw this. Is this you're opinion? If it is your opinion, don't write it as if it's a known fact. Also, if a head coaching candidate doesn't think he can do anything with EJ Manuel then he shouldn't be hired. I'd bet a whole lot of money that Chip Kelly would have had EJ Manuel in the top 10 of QB statistics if he had him this past year. IMO he certainly would have started over Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez. The problem with EJ Manuel was 80% coaching. Will he ever be an elite QB? Probably not. Is he a QB with enough skills like Joe Flacco and Eli Manning that you can coach up to play at a high enough level to get you in the playoffs, get on a roll and win the Superbowl? I believe Manuel could be that type of QB for the Bills. What the Bills need is an innovative and creative coach like Chip Kelly that tunes out the negative and goes full throttle with a plan that uses Manuel's best attributes. Spread formation, QB runs, quick pace, deep throws and tell him to play with no fear of getting yelled at. You want to see Manuel thrive? That's the game plan people. There is no silver bullet QB coming in here that is a better option than a new head coach getting EJ Manuel in gear. Not Cutler, Foles, Sanchez, Glennon...ect. All well known duds IMO. Unless the Giants or Steelers are trading away their starting QBs to the Bills, the best option is giving EJ Manuel a free form and innovative offense.

Match the coach with the team
1billsfan replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bears - Todd Bowles Jets - Dan Quinn 49ers - Vic Fangio Falcons - Rex Ryan Raiders - Jack Del Rio Bills - Darrell Bevell I think the logical choice is Bevell for the Bills. He and Schwartz would be a very good combo on offense and defense. Reich is just too green and Schwartz's personality is a little too wild for what this team needs right now. -
Head Coach Candidate: Frank Reich
1billsfan replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've come to the conclusion that Frank Reich is the "safe" pick. Do I think the Bills should go "safe"? No I don't. I just think that he doesn't have the demeanor you want in an NFL head coach. He's very smart and he knows the NFL and offenses, but I think with being a head coach you need much more than that. You need a little bit of that cockiness and brashness that all of the great coaches have. Players need to feel their head coach has an edginess to them. My picks are either Darrell Bevell or Pep Hamilton. Two guys with proven track records on offense who have a little of that natural cockiness and brashness in their personalities that you should want in your head coach. I don't want the Bills to play it safe. We didn't want Marrone to play it safe so why should we play it safe now? -
True cost of Bills' Watkins trade
1billsfan replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Anyone that agrees with what Doug Marrone thinks regarding NFL football decisions is an idiot. Marrone had no clue what to do with Sammy Watkins. Whoever wrote this did not watch the Buffalo Bills play this season. They do not know that Doug Marrone refused to feature Sammy Watkins. They do not know that if Doug Marrone was the head coach of the Giants that Odell Beckham Jr. would have had a rather ordinary rookie season for a WR than become the superstar he became under Ben McAdoo. -
Jets - Dan Quinn the likely hire
1billsfan replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Dan Quinn was my pick for the new head coach of the Bills. Since it seems he's very interested in the Jets job and he's from NJ, I think that Quinn was never a realistic option. I certainly don't want another Marrone situation where a guy wants to be the head coach of the home team where he grew up! This seems to be the case with Quinn. I think the Jets are getting a really good head coach and him being there will make it much tougher for the Bills to beat the Jets in the future. It may take a couple of years, but the Jets are going to be a tough team again in the near future. Which brings me to the Bills head coach search. With the Jets picking Quinn, I'm back to two candidates who have never been NFL head coaches. I think the Bills should NOT go retread. It's too safe, boring and the players and fans can see through this. This team needs to hit one out of the park with a new guy. You don't do that by going safe, you do it by taking chances. Pegula says he likes people that take chances and if that's the case then they should hire a guy who hasn't done it before but there's the promise of a head coach bringing a new, exciting and original brand of football to this franchise. Shanahan (Broncos), Rex (Jets), Schwartz (Lions), Jackson (Raiders) need not apply. I know I've been back and forth on who I want, but right now I want the Bills to hire either Darrell Bevell or Pep Hamilton as their new head coach. Both guys would be great hires given the Bills bad offense situation. Both guys are effective communicators who have a confident head coaching demeanor with just enough cockiness. Both guys come from highly successful NFL offenses and would be able to provide EJ Manuel proper QB development by giving him a professional coaching experience. They would also work with Whaley on hand picking the other QB(s?) that they think they could win with and who would compete with Manuel in the offseason and training camp. If Schwartz can't handle not getting the job then I'd hire back Perry Fewell in a second. The guy probably still gives Brady and Belichick nightmares. Heck, I may let go Schwartz for Fewell anyways. As for Frank Reich, he's another safe pick (well known former QB during glory days) that I think the Bills need to avoid. Yes, he's a former Bill and he's extremely smart, but I just don't see him as an effective NFL head coach inspiring 53 players every Sunday to knock the other team's block off. I'm not saying he's not tough at all, I'm just saying that his demeanor doesn't seem commanding enough for the head coaching position. It's funny that the Jets turning to Quinn has crystalized my thought process regarding the Bills head coaching search, but it has. Bills fans, don't be afraid of not going the safe route. We constantly criticized Marrone for being too safe for good reason, let's hope the Bills don't go "safe" on this decision. Let's be young, new, innovative, creative and exciting! Let's do this!
