IF Panthers take Newton...what do the Bills do?
1billsfan replied to TH3's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Take Robert Quinn and hope he's the second coming of Lawrence Taylor. -
I think that Quinn has that kind of potential. I don't think that Dareus does.
-
That's the thing, we have no idea what the NFL teams think of this guy. It seems that every draft the "experts" like Mayock and Kiper get thrown some big curve balls during the draft. Have you ever seen Dareus being interviewed? It's not pretty. Those are things that will drop a player, especially one who's stats are less than stellar. The Bills probably are looking for someone at #3 who's great, impactful, a leader type and one who has a high level of intelligence.
-
Well, NFP has him ranked 14th... http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/scouting_department.html I keep feeling that Dareus is being falsely sold as some kind of a huge difference maker, when reality is that he isn't going to be that. He'll probably end up being a very good gap filler. As much as we need gap filling on defense, that's not good value for the #3 pick IMO.
-
Yesterday, I posted a youtube clip of his LSU game this year and he literally did nothing in that game. Not only didn't he look like a #3 pick, he didn't look like a first rounder. He looked slow, lumbering and did not attack the ball carrier. Dareus has officially become the most overrated player in this draft.
-
"I also worry about building a 34 line based on penetration not gap control." So you're wanting to pick a gap control player at #3? To me, that's a crazy thing to do. You can find gap guys in the later rounds if that's what you want. The #3 pick is supposed to be all about having a huge impact and playmaking ability, not gap control. Players like Quinn, Fairley, Peterson, Green, Miller (though I'm not big on him), and even a guy like Newton. These are all #3 overall "impact" type players, not role players like a gap filler. Dareus is this year's Gerald McCoy, nice player but will never be an impact guy like Suh.
-
Go ask the quarterbacks in the SEC about that...LOL
-
Fairley and Suh both dominated in their last year on college. I think the key at #3 is too get someone who actually dominated at his position in his last year. That's Quinn, Fairley, Peterson or Green. Dareus made his name off of that one hit in a bowl game a couple of years ago. People say his stats suck because he was double teamed, well I'm sure that Suh and Fairley were double teamed often as well. If you can't beat double teams in college then you certainly will never do it at the next level. I agree that he's this year's Gerald McCoy.
-
Seriously, what did Dareus do this year that rates him so high in your eyes? I just got done watching a youtube clip of him against LSU... ...and he doesn't even look like a 1st rounder let alone #3 overall. I get that people here are looking at him like he might be the next Ndamukong Suh, but at least Suh dominated in his last year in college. Dareus didn't. People say that he was double teamed so that led to his disappointing season, but that doesn't wash because Suh was probably double and triple teamed yet still dominated. This is a red flag that so many here just choose to outright ignore. Dareus was NOT dominating last year! He's this year's Gerald McCoy. Plus, the guy's supposedly not very bright at all. Yet you feel that Dareus is low risk? I just don't get it. I want a player that dominated his opponents in his last year in college. Robert Quinn did that, and also Fairley did that. Dareus did not do that. I think Dareus will eventually be considered a bust (since he's desitined to go in the top 5) when all is said and done.
-
If he has a good showing at his pro day then you can bet the Bills take him before they'll take the guy who was just suing them before the draft. I can just see Wilson walking in and personally taking Von Miller's name off the big board and throwing it in the trash...LOL
-
Quinn really didn't have a poor combine. By all accounts he hit the base marks that people expected he'd hit. The thing is that the expectations were so high that the perception was that it was a bad combine. I think Miller is that combine numbers guy that people draft higher than where he should really go. Also, to me Quinn's big size is natural where I see Miller trying to bulk up to hit the magic number. Finally, just imagine if you would, the specimen that Quinn would look like if he played two extra seasons and was a senior like Miller? We'd never have a shot at him. I think that Quinn's stock rises right before the draft and tempts the Panthers who will eventually go with Newton at #1. The Broncos are the wildcard here, I hope they fall in love with Dareus.

Tomcats 5th Annual "Gimme Five" Draft Contest
1billsfan replied to The Tomcat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Here's what I think... 1: Cam Newton QB - Carolina 2: Blaine Gabbert QB - San Francisco 3: Von Miller LB - Cleveland 4: Gabe Carimi OT - Green Bay 5: Kyle Rudolph TE - Pittsburgh If I do win, you can give my prize to good will. -
We don't get the Miller love. Put up great numbers, but that was done with speed. In the NFL you are not going to out-speed your way to sacks. You have to have strength and moves and be able to take on blockers. We also don't get the Dareus love. The guy is as dumb as a box of rocks and looked kind of average last year since he was double teamed often. Why is a guy who can't fight off double teams in college so sought after and considered a top pick? Robert Quinn is the perfect defensive beast that this team needs. Leader, baller, has size, speed, build and ability to be the best LB in the league in a very short time. IMO the only other guys who would have a true "impact" on our defense would be Fairley or Peterson.
-
Again, you're wrong, he was dominant in college and I already proved it with both statistical and logical reasoning. Just one look at Dareus and you can tell the guy will have weight issues that will eventually slow him down till he's nothing more than a run plugger in the middle. I'll give him two years till that transition happens.
-
He was dominating as a sophmore and I read he was double teamed an awful lot that 2009 season. Why are you trying to talk yourself out of him? Lucky for us he's probably not going to go to the first two teams ahead of us.
-
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1630332 Quinn's 2009 Season... 19 tackles for loss (15th in the nation) 11 sacks (16th in the nation) 6 forced fumbles (4th in the nation) ...that's not dominating?...LOL Let's get real here, we need a playmaker not a future fat tub-o-lard collecting paychecks, not sacks. Get on board, Quinn's the man for the Bills.
-
First off, someone needs to tell Mel that Gabbert didn't compete in Indy. What, did he talk a good game?...LOL Secondly, Robert Quinn will be hands down the best defensive player and pass rusher in this draft. Forget Dareus (too tubby), Miller (too small), Bowers (lacks explosiveness) et all. Let's be smart and draft the obvious choice...Robert Quinn.
-
I changed my pick from Newton to Quinn. I think Robert Quinn will be the best defensive player in this draft and we would finally have someone that will get after Brady. He's perennial pro bowler good. I also like that he's cut from the same cloth and comes from the same school as Lawrence Taylor (hopefully minus the addiction problems). Had a brain tumor removed, was a very good wrestler, knocked it out of the park with his play in the 2009 season. I hope he's at the top of the Bills board. BTW, I wonder if Bills fans picking Miller would do the same if you were standing in front of both players, Quinn and Miller. I think they'd all change their choice and be like, "I'm taking this mean looking big dude right here man!"...LOL I'm not scared by the time off either, he'll be the player most chomping on the bit IMO.

Well-Thought-Out CBA Negotiation Article

Cold hard numbers... http://blogs.forbes.com/sportsmoney/2011/01/10/numbers-show-nfls-economic-realities-for-lockout-unwarranted/ "What is Goodell basing his “economic realities” on? The league has pointed to the only financial info made available to the public, the Green Bay Packers. The “economic realities” are that in the worst economy since The Great Depression, the Packers saw reduced profits last year. The club pulled in $9.8 million in profits for the fiscal year that ended March 31. That was a decrease from $20.1 million from the year prior." Also... http://blogs.forbes.com/sportsmoney/2011/01/12/more-numbers-show-labor-issue-in-nfl-far-from-cut-and-dry/ I disagree with the writer's assertion that it's unwarranted, the Packers numbers (the only ones available since they're publicly owned) actually tells me that the owners should be concerned. Profit dropping 50% in one year? Increased blackouts throughout the league?… http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2011-01-28-nfl-ticket-prices_N.htm But then there's the whole not showing the financial books of the other 31 clubs that thwarts the owners plee for sympathy. Anyways, I just wanted to share these articles I found on the subject. -
Well-Thought-Out CBA Negotiation Article

Teams like Buffalo and Cleveland are only making money (subjectively) from their share of the TV deal while the Cowboys, Giants, Redskins are basically printing money above and beyond that. This is the reason that they won't show their books, Jones and the richie riches told them you can't have our money but we'll go to the mat for you and this big squeeze of the players share. The NFL owners need to start sharing with each other again. Maybe not everything but a percentage that would get them close to what they are looking for from the players. I don't want the NFL to become MLB and it's quickly on it's way. -
It used to be that there was true profit sharing in the NFL (pre Jerry Jones era). The NFL owners need to go back to some semblance of that so the small market teams don't feel like the Kansas City Royals of the NFL. How much are Bills tickets? How much are Cowboys tickets? That's what this whole thing is about. The NFL is slowly becoming MLB in team disparity and the Jones' of the league don't want to share their profits with the teams that can't raise their prices of tickets and merchandise. I think the key to this whole thing is that the NFL owners need to go to the original idea that made the league what it is today. They need to share with each other again.

Tell Gil Brandt to get a clue too... http://blogs.nfl.com/2011/03/08/newtons-pro-day-shows-why-he-should-go-no-1/?module=News_CP I wouldn't worry too much, because the Panthers will end up picking him.
-
Local newspaper greases the skids... http://blogs.charlotte.com/panthers/2011/03/mock-draft-v10-we-will-mock-you.html ...and I also think that the Broncos take Dareus. If this happens then the Bills should pick either Fairley or Quinn, or consider trading back for someone who wants Gabbert.

Wisconsin Union Bashing Bill Passes
1billsfan replied to Dave_In_Norfolk's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Gee whiz, guess the dems never got that call for civility... http://www.620wtmj.com/news/local/117732923.html Could you imagine the media reaction if the Tea Party were creating this kind of damage, threats and chaos? -
I'm trying not to get too hung up on the possibility of Newton because I think he's going to the #1 pick whether it's the Panthers or a team that moves up to get him. This Blaine Gabbert being thought of as a #1 overall pick is league smokescreens. I have a feeling that of the Bengals, Cardinals, 49ers, Cowboys (I could see them trading away the disappointing Romo), Vikings, or Dolphins (am I missing anybody?) one will make a blockbuster trade up to get Newton.
