  1. The light may go on and he still may not be accurate enough.

I've supported him on here before for being accurate enough. But he has a completion percentage kind of accuracy. He also has a processing information quick enough and correct enough issue. I'm sure that's what you mean by the light going on. But it would have to go on to Batsignal strength if he still suffers from the accuracy problem. A lot of that is intertwined though. His accuracy will surely improve with confidence and experience and the light going on. If that happens he can be a decent starter.

What he needs to be a franchise QB however is the light going on, AND not only the accuracy drastically increased, but it has to go from where it is now to where it was in college (completion percentage accurate) and then beyond that to YAC kind of accuracy where he hits guys regularly on the numbers not just close enough for them to catch. He may not be able to do that ever. We don't know.

He needs the light to go on and the laser to go on, too.

I admit it....I do look for any positive I can find. When Rex talks about him "really firing it" I was happy.

  2. I know this is a little off subject....and I know these are not "franchise guys" but does anyone else feel a lot better about having actual veteran QBs on the roster......both as starter and backup?

Cassell - up and down but QB'd two very good seasons

T Taylor - backed up Flacco for years.....which means he has fended off other QBs trying to take the backup job for years

Then you have EJ......who isnt a rookie any more

  3.

This thread is about revisiting the trade, so, while I agree that we all need to move on, this thread isn't the place for that.

As for Whaley being aggressive, I like it, I just wish he would be that aggressive with the QB position. I would have loved for him to go after Bradford, Foles or Cutler. I know all 3 are flawed, but all 3 are better than anything we have.

Perhaps we did not have the ammunition to go after these QBs?

Also....it has been beaten into horse glue.....but we cannot afford to take on a ridiculous franchise QB salary (especially on a flawed qb) because we have invested so much into the OTHER positions.

Only one of two way for us to get a "franchise" QB

    - Draft one

    - Hope that one of our current young QB's turns the corner

I'm so sick of this being bantered in the media. Was he worth it? So far, no. Will he eventually be worth it? Maybe. He has shown flashes of elite talent, but also has been injury prone and has a tendency for alligator arms in traffic. I'd like to think he'll become a pro-bowl receiver, but anyone who says they know either way is just guessing. Let's see how the year plays out. Until then, I'm reserving judgment.

Sammy Watkins is alligator arms in traffic? That is a new one.

  4. Yeah, knew the homers would be all over it. Anything approaching objectivity is like a red flag to them.

Good to see someone finally told you about spell-check, John. Now if they only had a punctuation check.

Just as long as it doesnt ruin your Friday night......

If Cassell plays like a Top 16 QB, we will make playoffs and be competitive once we are in them. Bradford is much better QB than Cassell, it's not even close.

Too bad Bradford cant stay healthy...which is just as big a part of the equation......

    No

But it is what it is now. Gotta dance with the gal you brought, as they say. Even though that gal just had hip surgery and won't be dancing for a while. :(

I agreed with the trade...but also agree what regardless we are where we are....and people crying in the milk about Whaley being aggressive are going to need to move on.

  5.

No word on who "won" but here's a quote from Rex:

“I sat back and watched the quarterbacks primarily in individual and have been impressed. When you see EJ, I don’t remember if I’ve ever seen him throw the ball this well, he’s really firing it.”

Thats because Marrone isnt in his damn head......

    Still rootin for you EJ!

  6. I hate the trade because I don't think there was a huge gap between Sammy and other highly rated WR's (Evans, Beckham Jr, Benjamin etc.) and because, without a proven QB we are wasting his talents, i.e. putting the cart before the horse.

Of which we really wont know if true for another couple of years.......basing production of drafted players in their first year is a MISTAKE for a number of reasons.

I'd rather have invested in defense (Mosley) or even OL (one of the OT's).

We did....in the second round.....and Cyrus flopped in his first year (which leads me to my point again above BUT most scouts had Cyrus as a 1st round prospect so the bills DID in fact invest in the O line.....soooooo what is the gripe? And spending on D? On a top 4 defense? Really? When our O was so bad? Really?

I think the Bills (including Whaley), haven't spent enough time finding a true proven NFL QB. To me, that's the first, second, third and fourth priorities.

I say this to everyone who spouts this.....please explain in your opinion what Whaley could have done here.....(I will wait).......there are only SO MANY FRANCHISE QB's in the league...only about 5 teams have them......so what should they have done?

This off-season, they've essentially said, we don't have a QB, we won't be able to get a QB, so we are going to build up everything besides QB (i.e. Hughes, McCoy, Harvin, Clay etc.) -- that to me is Plan B. Plan A would have been to sacrifice everything we could to get Bradford or even Foles. Please see above.....and explain how we get our QB.

I believe you can't win a SuperBowl without a decent (Top 16) QB. I think the Bills are a marginal playoff team (right now), but have no shot at a SuperBowl. Dont you find it interesting that the teams that make it to the championship game also are more then solid at other spots on their team?

  7. I think what you meant to say is that problem #2 remains even if problem #1 goes away. Which is true. However, if EJ turned out to be a very good QB and got Sammy the ball and Sammy had great season, I would argue that even though it was a DEEP WR class, most of us who were against the trade would admit the trade worked, even if it meant giving up an extra #1.

I have seen many years where it was claimed that the draft was deep at a certain position and in the end ended up NOT being the case.....

Cannot base decisions at the time in hindsight

Sammy Watkins was the most can miss player of that draft.......and he actually had upside past it......his work eithic and character match his performance.....

He could be special....time to stop lamenting that draft and move onto the future

  8. Thanks for ruining tonight, Whaley, and for what, a receiver? I wouldn't move up to get Jerry Rice if we had Montana for a QB. Moving up and paying like you did was a rookie move, bro.

A lot like most of your posts

No sure why you have an issue with what I posted.

I said I didn't like the trade then, I don't like it now.

I want Sammy to be great and prove me wrong.

    What's your beef ?

Looked pretty darn good for a rookie Tex

  9. Ryan was talking about EJ throwing yesterday. Compared to Cassel, who has played 11 years in the league, EJ wasn't getting the ball out as fast as Cassel was. He was throwing well, but Rex was pointing out they wanted him to get the ball out a split second earlier. Cassel was throwing before the WR broke, EJ was throwing as the WR broke. It was a day one observation that they wanted him to do it a couple tenths of a second earlier. There is zero chance that had anything to do with what they think of him as a QB or drafting Petty.

I think they think Petty is going to fall. To me there is also zero chance that after they are already done with their board, which they are, now is going to be the first time they really sat down with Petty outside of the combine. That makes no sense. If they are drafting him they have spoken to him several times.

Kelly....I really appreciate you defending of EJ because too many like to talk crap about him. He is a good kid and a hard worker......and he still might work out in this league and I hope he does

as a EJ supporter I am honestly worried that the same things keep getting brought up about him.......

    IN MY OPINION

    - I worry how people talk about him being slow throwing the ball......windows in the nfl open and close quickly......Cassell with a lot of experience but limited weapons SEES THOSE WINDOWS....he is throwing before WR's are open....EJ is not...and has not been which has been a resounding crit of him......now can this improve? I do root for this to be so....i do hope that EJ overcomes it

    BUT

    - Perhaps Rex isnt willing to wait....perhaps the fact that Cassell is getting the ball out on time and EJ is a split second late is a dooming thing to EJ.......and the bills have already stated that the do NOT have their franchise QB yet.

so the question....what do we do?

The bills might be looking to draft petty and stash him for a while while they transition him from the spread over to a pro style offense.....you can do that because the roster has two veteran QBs on it......a stacked defense......and lots of offensive weapons.

We might draft Petty and not hear a thing about him for 2 years with this team.
