NASA (Not About Space Anymore)
TheMadCap replied to IDBillzFan's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Those of you who know me know that I am not NASA's biggest fan, but this strikes me as lunacy. First off, I know that teh current administrator is a Obama appointed troll, but my goodness, does anyone actually look at these official statements? That this would actually be said in front of the media is beyond comprehension. Oh, I have no doubt that it is just talk for PR purposes, but wow, this is the opposite of what just about everyone wants to hear. I am starting to wonder if the current adminsitration in the WH is actively TRYING to screw themselves up... -
Why??? It's ultra-lame...

Yeah, I love how he recalled that the recordings were done and he couldn't sing the parts high enough... SIDE NOTE: My brothers and I are doing the entire side of 2112 at a club this month. I would love to have the sound effects for the end, "ATTENTION ALL PLANETS OF THE SOLAR FEDERATION". Any audio wizards out there have ability/access to find that particular effect, sans the music?

Went out and bought the DVD yesterday. Best Buy is selling a special edition DVD with a Moving Pictures t-shirt but that puppy was sold out! In fact, I had to call and reserve a copy of the regular DVD, because everything was sold out, even BluRay. Now on to the movie... It was really, really cool to see the early stuff, especially with young Alex telling his parents that he didn't want to finish high school cause he wanted to play music. Ha! The oldschool footage with Rutsey is worth the price of the film itself. The one thing that was very surprising and that I did not know at all was that the band had a very, very difficult time making Hemispheres. That was apparently the straw that broke the camel's back as they say with regard to the epic, entire side of the album songs. Alex sez that they tried for 11 days to do "La Villa" in one live take! Holy crap! I did not realize Billy Corrigan was such a well-informed, thoughtful guy. Jack Black is STILL an idiot. I cannot believe that there are actually people out there that try to get all up in Peart's face when they should chance to run into him (especially professional musicians), or actually go and seek him out. It's a WELL known fact that he's not into that at all. All in all, this video is a must have for all Rush fans...

Technical Recruiters - Worthwhile or Worthless?
TheMadCap replied to SDS's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Scott, I know you are an IT type, but I would say that they are nearly indespensible in my industry, namely, the biotech/science/pharma scene. Many of the companies in my field hire exclusively through the recruiters, in fact, I have been refused to be considered because I applied through the posting on a companies website. I believe that it is a law that they have to post jobs on thier website, but don't have to do thier actual hiring through them... -
I have to say that I am very surprised at the comments in this thread. I expected at least one or two of the usual suspects to claim police brutality. What other options could the cop have used to defuse this situation? Would pepperspraying them have been better?

start caps are a very, very inexpensive part. If it doesn't work, you're out like 15 bucks, if that... -
Car Experts - advice **update**

agree with the poster regarding fuel problems. I would try to clean fuel injectors first since that is inexpensive. How long since you changed plugs? -
Advice Needed - Air Conditioner issues
TheMadCap replied to TheMadCap's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Obviously, I am by no means an expert, but the issue you were describing with your unit sounds very much like a bad capacitor. You can find out by removing it and taking it to a shop to be tested. Most multimeters don't have microfarads. Just be sure to decharge before you touch it... -

UPDATE: Wow, was it easy to remove the motor and fan blades. Didn't need a puller, just removed the lock nut and the blades popped off with no problem. Now to order the parts and hope they don't take a week to get here by UPS ground. Thanks everyone for the links to the tech help. Also, since very few suppliers will sell to homeowners (this helps facilitate your ass-raping by AC repair contractors), here is where I was able to obtain parts for the Lennox, which parts are hard to come by: www.cozyparts.com -

Definitely take care of it if you can. And no, the fan blades are ususally a separate part, most placed you order a motor from will send you just the motor... -
Advice Needed - Air Conditioner issues
TheMadCap replied to TheMadCap's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Actually, I had one for the first few years after we moved in, but it expired. The units are only 7 years old, the compressor is warranteed by Lennox for 10 years. Unless you have a compressor go out or a coil leak, it's really not that expensive to maintain yourself. For example, the AC company wanted 295 bucks to replace the start capacitor, which is a 13 dollar part at a wholesaler. Of course, I would NEVER attempt to recharge the coolant. This required special equipment and training. Really, there is not a who lot the average Joe couldn't do with a little knowledege... -

yes, they appear to be made from aluminum foil. I am going to try and remove the motor with the blades, then try and get the blades off. If I am sucessful, I won't have to buy the blades, otherwise its like 75 more bucks for the fan blades (or 1,250 if you have an AC repair company come and bend you over)... -

Movies that confuse/haunt/bewilder
TheMadCap replied to Cugalabanza's topic in Off the Wall Archives
there is an independant film called PRIMER about time travel paradox that I guarantee even Tom couldn't fully understand until about the third viewing. Actually, it makes the movie fun to watch a few times and let your understanding of what is happening grow with each watching... -
Mods: can you leave this in OT for a few days before moving to consumer forum? thanks! here is my issue: I have two Lennox outdoor heat pump units (condensor units). Both of which have recently stopped working due to bad capacitors (dual stage, run the fan motor and compressor). The first unit lost a capacitor while we were on vacation, so even though I had the thermostat turned up, the fan motor still tried to spin. The AC guy said that the fan motor might have been damaged and may stop working eventually. Well, it did, cause now I can barely turn the fan blades by hand. My question is this: I can buy a new motor online for about 1/1000000 the cost of having some dude come out and do it for me. How difficult a job do you suspect this will be? I am most worried about getting the fan blades off without bending them, since they are delicate. I am somewhat mechanically inclined and have a few friends who can help. Advice needed from those in the know...
