I'm trying to think of another NFL example of a new and inexperienced/unproven GM/coach combo that came in, installed brand new schemes on both sides of the ball, traded away a group of young, purportedly talented players at a discount, and then made it to their second contracts. I'm at a loss but perhaps there are examples out there... anyone?

And also without being too political - why were the prosecutors pushing so hard to have him convicted?

I'm not sure you're defining "scheme" the same way I am. Belichick's scheme on defense is very simple. He adjusts the tactics to fit specific gamelans and specific players - within his scheme, he asks his players to do what they're good at. The type of player he looks for is one who is versatile (i.e., can play multiple roles) and intelligent. On offense, the scheme is fairly complicated and changes week to week depending on the opponent.

I don't disagree, and my premise is simple: the safest way to build both short-term and long-term is to leverage your core strengths. Trading away your young talent because it doesn't fit your new "schemes" is not the way to do that.

I'm saying something else: I wouldn't buy into the "judgment and vision" of an unheralded management team that proposed to sell away the core assets of a billion dollar business at a low-value discount, in exchange for future opportunities. At the very least, I'd have them on a short leash, overseen by someone with a real track record - a Ron Wolf type. Note that this would be especially true if I were a newby owner with no experience in the industry, a la Terry.

But they have no track record to speak of. If they did, perhaps I'd let them drag me through a year or even two years of short-term pain. But my shareholder aren't going to sit quietly while I let a couple of complete nobodies embark on a questionable strategy simply because they promise a payoff in the future...

I'll put it another way: a widget-selling business is struggling. New management is brought in. Instead of capitalizing on the core assets of the company (the widget-making expertise, the factories, supplier networks, etc.), new management's plan is to sell everything and use the sale revenue to purchase an entirely new business infrastructure in a year or two. Maybe we'll sell Cogswheels, maybe we'll sell Hermophones, who knows? We'll figure it out in a year or two! How do you think the shareholders would react to that approach? Management 101: leverage your core strengths. Don't bring in a bunch of coaches who need different players to fit their systems. DON'T HIRE THOSE COACHES. Hire the coaches who have demonstrated the ability to tailor systems around the existing talent. Jeebus H. Cringles, it's not that complicated. Stop giving the Pegulas a free pass, people. They have no clue what they're doing and we are in for 2-4 more years of garbage product. You're gonna pay for that? I'm not - I canceled Sunday Ticket and we gave up our season tickets this year. ENOUGH.

One would think that, at some point, Bills fans would stop swallowing the excuse that "it was a prior regime, X player didn't fit anymore" and start holding it against THE FRANCHISE for HISTORICALLY SUCKING for two decades. For pissing away draft picks and constantly changing regimes so that core young talent repeatedly becomes expendable. Do you folks realize how hard it is to miss the playoffs for this long of a stretch? I'll say it again, I think that some of you have given up entirely on the concept of on-field winning and follow the team simply in order to "geek out" during the offseason and the NFL Draft. Fans are happy with the extra draft picks because that means more geeking out in April. It's basically fantasy football, except kinda real.
