Bills promote Eric Washington to assistant head coach

Funny. They fired the defensive coordinator responsible for that unit. -

This depends on your definition of good results. The only goal of an NFL season is to win the Super Bowl. Not to win regular season games, not to lose in the divisional round, not to build a culture. Winning a Super Bowl... or bust. That's it. Not the same. Reid was a good coach pre-Mahomes. He had been to NUMEROUS championship games, and a Super Bowl. And with a worse QB than Allen. Dungy, like McDermott, was the king of divisional round or worse. The fact that he only got to 1 Super Bowl with Peyton freaking Manning is one of the most damning aspects of Dungy's career. And the fact that Gruden won Dungy's team a Super Bowl the year after Dungy was fired, puts the nail in Dungy's coaching coffin. -

I don't really care, since it's just a title. However, I do find it odd that they would promote someone, even ceremoniously, while his unit underperforms yearly. -

Yes Peyton Manning dragged him to a ring. -

John Fox is a great example but hardly the only example. There is also Tony Dungy, who coached the Buccaneers from 1996 to 2001 and led them to the playoffs in four of his six seasons, but was unable to guide them to the Super Bowl and was fired. Jon Gruden took over the team and won a Super Bowl. -

Bengals have Lou Anarumo. His in-game defensive adjustments are the stuff of legends. -

Fantastic example. John Fox is a nearly perfect comparison. -

Homer Excuses Book Volume IV Pg. 208 "If the subject of the Bengals' patchwork offensive line in their demolition of the Bills during the 2023 playoffs arises, tactfully segue to the hardship defense. Remind them of Kim's medical crisis from 8 months prior, the sorrowful Hamlin event 3 weeks before, and as a last resort, sheepishly mention the Tops tragedy. So on and so forth.” -
Speaking of media, here's exhibit A of a lazy, bad trend.

Boston's press corps doesn't treat their role with more gravitas. What you're noticing is they are able to operate without fear of the Patriots. Their location in a larger city brimming with a variety of professional sports teams, owned by different entities, circumvents any single-team dominance. In contrast, PSE wields exclusive power over Buffalo's journalism scene. For example, they have the authority to withdraw the radio contract with WGR should their coverage become too critical, and it was reported that they got multiple reporters at The Buffalo News fired. PSE has even imposed a two-week ban on a reporter for providing overly detailed information such as depth charts and player sets during training camp. On one occasion, McDermott even verbally attacked a reporter for publicizing unflattering information before a practice. There was a poster on this forum that said this happened another time as well (with another reporter), but that it only leaked once. Therefore, Buffalo's media finds itself living in the shadow of PSE, given its unique status as the city's sole major sports organization. This is true. Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner! The vast number of posters who do not understand this concept is mindboggling. -

That's clearly nonsense. The players know the problem. They just aren't talking and are coached on how to dismiss and or mislead reporters and the public. Again, this is nonsense. Buffalo media is owned by PSE and would never release the information they have. Sal Cappaccio has literally admitted to this in the past. And Muki Hawkins (another reporter) said he knew the problem as well, but wasn't going to publish it. Ah, yes. -
Discerning the critical contributor between a quarterback and a coach isn't as complex as it may seem. Consider Belichick's experience - he spent half a decade as a head coach without significant success until Brady joined his team, leading him to multiple Super Bowl victories. Similarly, Reid had a coaching career spanning two separate decades, with two separate teams, before Mahomes came onboard and won him two Super Bowls. Bill Walsh's was fortunate in that his first year as a head coach was Joe Montanas first year as a player. However, Montana proved who the real winner was when he won a Super Bowl with George Seifert after Walsh retired. It's the QB. It is always the QB. That's not to say that coaches are unimportant. Where the head coach comes into play is in the minutiae of decision making during critical plays and playoff games.

DVOA has Bills the #1 projected team
Einstein replied to Royale with Cheese's topic in The Stadium Wall
Your post brought a different topic to mind. A subject that isn't frequently discussed is McDermott's hiatus from calling plays and orchestrating a complete defensive game plan. Can we genuinely expect him to perform at the same level as Carolina, having left his craft untouched for almost ten years? We are going on 7 years since he last called a full game. Remember, some folks struggled to find the break room after returning to the office after two years of Covid-related absence. McDermott, on the other hand, hasn't exercised his aptitude for calling defensive plays for six long years. -

Bingo. I posted this before but I think it expands on exactly what you are saying the last page or two: For nearly twenty years, the objective was to achieve "playoff quality". Today, however, that status is a given. It is the baseline. Reaching the playoffs is no longer a measure of distinction for a Bills coach. It is the bare minimum. With a top 3 QB in Josh Allen, playoffs have become an expectation. In some instances, the coach who reinvigorates a franchise, lifting it from obscurity, is not the same coach who can guide a team to its pinnacle - a championship. These are, after all, distinct skill sets. The former requires the ability to unify a franchise, to foster a new culture, and to motivate. Meanwhile, a championship coach needs tobe a brilliant strategist, adept at navigating the complexities of in-game decisions, and able to outwit the other sideline. These capabilities can coexist in one individual, but sometimes, they're embodied by two separate individuals. I see McDermott as an exceptional 'team-flipper'. Just as a house flipper can transform a derelict property into a lucrative investment, McDermott possesses the instinctive ability to revitalize an NFL franchise and imbue it with respectability. However, we've observed that McDermott, despite his commendable skill as a team-flipper, hasn't displayed the same proficiency in the playoffs. In high-stakes situations, when absolute precision is demanded, and outsmarting the opposing team is crucial, he hasn't fully met the challenge. Is that going to suddenly change? I have my doubts. -

Sorry about that. We did take a few suggestions and also tried finding recipes of our own. We even found an excellent chicken french recipe, and the best chinese fried rice i’ve ever had. We were doing so well with cooking at home until we went on vacation. -

He may have already been posted (I haven't read all 5 pages of the thread yet), but I am very high on Lou Anarumo. He is great motivator (like McD), a tough bastard (like Belichick), and has shown (numerous times) that he can stymie the Chiefs offense in the playoffs. Including absolutely blanking Mahomes in the second half of last years AFCCG, in one of the best defensive efforts i've ever seen. Hiring Anarumo: 1) Helps the Bills. 2) Hurts the Bengals. 3) Hurts the Chiefs. It's a win/win/win. It's not as sexy of a pick as hiring an offensive mind, but we let our offensive mind go to the Giants, so... Anarumom would be my pick. PS, as much as I am down about McD's chances to win a championship, I would shake his hand and thank him for all he has done for the franchise. He is a large part of the reason that we are no longer a joke around the NFL. He established a culture in Buffalo and brought credibility back to this franchise. He deserves serious praise for what he has accomplished. When we win a ring with another coach, I believe McD should get a ring as well, because without him setting the groundwork and building the foundation, the eventual ring would never have happened. -
Is Sean McDermott our version of Doug Collins?

A stadium opening is actually the perfect time to fire an old coach and hire a new one. New coaches (new hope) boost ticket sales.
