  1. He came to a church fundraiser breakfast back in the mid 60's and he ate with us, sat at the big boy table, and then spoke to the crowd about his career and the role of sports in his life.  My Dad said he did it for free.   Quite a gentleman.  Different times.   Joe O'Donnell, another Bills offensive lineman, did it too.

    RIP Al.

Kubiak does these weekly. Always features nice analysis and includes highlights.

Two noteworthy items in this week's synopsis.  The first is his opinion on how exhausted Josh and the Bills appeared all game. The second is his appeal to CBS to not have Romo do Bills games due to his anti Bills bias.

    Worth the read for sure.

I don't hear an anti-Bills bias from Romo.

He was making excuses for Allen's play due to the elbow injury.  Until then I was still believing the elbow was not a major factor.  I still think Allen's performance drop is a combination of things (his own mental mistakes, his supporting cast, play-calling), and not just the elbow.

I’ll be happy with a 1 point win and a mini bye to rest physically AND mentally. That was a tough 5 day stretch with both games being road games. Blizzard and all. If my math is right, we’ll play 3 road games in 11 days. It’s not a make or break game, but winning the Pats game would lead to us coming off the “break” ready to roll. IMO.

This game is very big for division tiebreakers.  We have to beat the Pats* twice to have a winning record in our division.  That is an important tiebreaker that we want to get.

I would argue 2017 was fringe, I mean the team backed into the playoffs and had absolutely no chance.

And I was off by a year or 2, it's called a mistake, not fabrication.

Point of my original post was he would have some value on the current Bills roster still and I do wish he was here in Buffalo.

And calm down, it's just a message board, no one attacked you.

Yes, he would have value on the Bills roster, especially if Von has to sit out.  But he didn't get shipped out of Buffalo just when they "got good".  He played in the AFC Championship game two years ago and he was part of the 13 second debacle last year.  He played on 4 playoff teams.  He had a good run with the Bills and would probably want to retire a Bill.

Yes I'm aware, but when you spend what? 9 years with a team and they begin to win in your 8th year there, you did move on when they began to win, not before.

Not that this argument has any actual value.

Still no.  The Bills have been winning for several years dude.  Jerry played in the playoffs in 2017, 2019, 2020, and 2021.  Nine years and 4 winning season with playoffs.   Keep making crap up though.

I think the fact that he looked good in pre-season threw off people’s expectations. I would like to see a little more out of him but he is a mid round pick rookie I think he needs some time to develop. Shakir to me looks like he needs to build some strength and add a little more NFL polish to his game.

He looked great playing against 3's and 4's in preseason.  This is a lot different.  The NFL in November/December is 4 levels of play higher than that.

He needs some time to develop his game.

I would take him anytime, he still has gas in the tank. I hate he played here and as soon as we got good he moved on, I'm sure it was a money issue.

But absolutely he would help any team as a rotational player.

Eh, no.  He was here up to and including last season.  He was part of all the recent playoff teams.

Shouldn't they have someone who can grow actual adult facial hair pitch their product?

No, they shouldn't.  Know your target audience.  Lots of teens and younger men watching football.   Majority of them do not have a heavy beard yet.

Picking a handsome, well spoken, popular, star player like Josh Allen will sell more blades to young people than picking Grizzly Adams.

Hines needs to be more involved in the offense beginning this game.  If he is not then it's a direct indictment of both Dorsey and McDermott. Period.

I agree with the first sentence because I think we need to throw some new wrinkles at Belichek.  Rest assured he has digested everything we did to him last year and he has looked at all the film this season too.

We need to pull out something new, maybe Hines can be that.  The Pats* defense is very good, and they will be ready for us in Foxboro.

  10. I am going with the basic assumption that Shakir does not get open enough and maybe even does the wrong things at times.  I do not think Josh trusts him enough in crunch time.  He trusts Diggs, Davis, Knox and McKenzie much more.   That is where he will go.

It takes a while for some receivers to develop, and it takes a while for them to get on the same page as their QB.  An injury to Crowder is the reason we are even talking about Shakir.  It is not like he emerged from great play in practice.   This is not preseason against 4th stringers.  Josh and Shakir have had little time to work together.

Next year Shakir should be much better.  This year you take what you can get from the 5th round rookie.  He is promising but probably not going to be an impact player just yet.

    Yea, the reality is harsh.

That reality being that neither of our slot guys can carry Cole Beasley’s jock.

TRUE.   We have not successfully replaced him.  You are correct on that point.   No one is arguing that.

You are wrong to believe that he is the same player he was 2 and 3 seasons ago.  He is not.  If he was, he would be showing that on the field.

    Let it go.

Well, he moved the sticks 34 times last season. He moved the sticks 37 in his first year as a Bill.

We all know what happened and why he isn’t here. And I won’t get into that.

He was fantastic then.   Now he no longer moves the sticks for any team.   Reality can be harsh at times.

And if you believe it would be over if he stayed with the Bills I guess you can have fun with that thought.

I believe that he was declining and so do about 30 other NFL teams.

He has played in 2 games for Tampa this season, 4 receptions for 17 yards.

  14.

Some fans here just can't be happy.  Success has brought expectations to completely unrealistic levels.

Not too many 6th round rookie CBs are going to get the job done as a starter, especially with the schedule we played.

Lets not forget that with Tre out Benford started the year as the #2 CB, he was ahead of Elam.  Everyone here liked him for awhile, then the pass rush went from great to ok, and now he and all of our CBs look average at best - which is exactly what they are.

He is a promising player and he might project better as a safety.

Seems last year all of the pieces lined up.  Only one major injury (Tre White).  That scenario is not going to happen again.

Last year happened.  We lost the game.  It is over.  Move on to this year.

Anything can happen this year.  Lots of football to be played and we are a strong contender.  Enjoy the ride.

There certainly seems to be a pattern to seasons for teams led by Sean McDermott:  Start better prepared and ahead of most teams, slump in mid-season as other teams improve, raise team toughness to finish the season strong.  The Bills’ 2022 season seems to be following the pattern.

The Bills beat the Lions 28-25 in Detroit on Thanksgiving Day.  The Bills survived another sloppy second half performance, the hallmark of their 2022 slump.  Trailing by three with less than ten minutes left in the game, Josh Allen engineered a 90-yard touchdown drive (an Allen specialty) to take a three-point lead, their first offensive score of the half.  Were the Bills moving into phase three of the season?  Would they show that end-of-season toughness that wins games in December?   Well, no, not yet.  Tyler Bass missed the extra point, and the Bills defense failed again to make the stop to win the game.  The Lions tied the game with a ten-play, 42-yard drive and a 51-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining in regulation.

Now, it was time for the tough-as-nails Bills to emerge.  Less than three weeks earlier, the Bills needed a late score to beat the Jets.  Allen started a drive with a big throw to Diggs, but a penalty brought the ball back and the Bills didn’t recover.  The following week, an Allen fumble and an Allen interception gave the Vikings a win.  This time, either literally or figuratively, Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs said to the rest of the offense, “We are not going to lose another one of these game.”  This time, everyone performed.

On first down, Allen found Diggs with a throw that only Allen can make, and Diggs made a tough catch in heavy traffic for 36 yards.  No penalty this time.  The Bills took the first of their timeouts, Allen ran twice for 12 yards, the second on the first quarterback power sweep the Bills have run in weeks.  Credit Ken Dorsey for saving it for a time when they really needed it.  Bass redeemed himself with a 45-yard field goal to win the game.

A few miscellaneous comments about the game:

    1.     Tre’Davious White returned to the lineup a year after his knee injury.  He played only a few series and returned to the bench for the rest of the game.  The Bills continue to take his recovery slowly.  We can expect to see him on the field more against the Patriots.

    2.    Without White but with Jordan Poyer back in the lineup, the Bills pass defense continued the mediocre run they’ve been on for several weeks.  The Lions had a lot of success in their mid-range game, managing to get separation that Jared Goff attacked with accurate throws.  Bills defenders often were a step behind and worse, they sometimes missed the tackle.  It’s not a coincidence that the Bills’ pass defense is struggling more while Tremaine Edmunds has been out.  A. J. Klein, a clever acquisition by Brandon Beane, filled in nicely, but he simply does not cover the ground that Edmunds does

    3.    The pass defense also suffered from a less than spectacular pass rush from the front four.  The Bills missed Rousseau and Epenesa, and then they lost Von Miller to injury late in the first half.  Ed Oliver rose to the occasion with a sack for a safety and several other disruptive plays, and DaQuan Jones was a factor again.  Because the defensive backfield was giving Goff throwing opportunities, the rest of the defensive line was unable to get the coverage sacks they collected earlier in the season.

    4.    I’ve been on Isaiah McKenzie all season long, but I have to give him his due this week.  He was outstanding against the Lions – solid route running and sure hands led to six receptions and a touchdown.  Great game

    5.    Meanwhile, I’m amazed that James Cook continues to get playing time over Nyheim Hines.  Cook shows no creativity as a runner, and he is a disappointment in the passing attack.  He had one clear drop, an unfortunate bobble, and his route running caused a near interception.  Tony Romo explained it well – when the receiver shows the quarterback something, the receiver must stay with it.  Having gotten to the check-down zone, Cook cut right and then cut back left.  Allen threw on the first cut, and Cook unwittingly ran away from the ball which sailed almost all the way to a waiting linebacker.

    6.    Spencer Brown is scary inconsistent in pass protection.  He’s mobile, and he’s a scrapper, but defenders beat him often.

    7.    David Quessenberry has filled in nicely, first for Brown earlier in the season and for Dion Dawkins in the Lions game.  He’s been solid.

    8.    Devin Singletary is a stud.  He needs a crease, and this offensive line sometimes doesn’t give him one, but he gets every yard that’s there, every time.  He’s quick, shifty, and tough.  It’s a pleasure to see the guy at work.

The Patriots game on Thursday has huge implications.  The Bills need it to keep pace with the Chiefs, Ravens, and Titans in the chase for the bye and home field.  And they need it to hold on to a share of the division lead.  The Pats are for real, with a really tough defense and an opportunistic offense.  Now’s the time for the Bills to raise the level of their play.  Now’s when they need people returning to the lineup.

    Welcome to December football.

    GO BILLS!!!

The Rockpile Review is written to share the passion we have for the Buffalo Bills. That passion was born in the Rockpile; its parents were everyday people of western New York who translated their dedication to a full day’s hard work and simple pleasures into love for a pro football team.

    Yes expectations are high.

Can we all agree that the losses were all bad in a # of ways.  The close win vs. Baltimore was a really bad start, weather affected and then slowly the Bills asserted themselves and a bad 4th down pick.  The KC win, they were the better team.

Now let's agree that injuries have had an affect on the Bills no doubt, but they too have not played well on either side and allowed b/c grade QBs to look way too good.

ready for the vomit, eyeroll and disagree emojis.🤣

What other term would you use for Epenesa?

I've not called Basham a bust yet. He's been underwhelming at best for q 2nd round pick.

He is a 3rd year player that had zero development his rookie year due to COVID when he, for some strange reason, trained wrong and reported to camp too small to play DE.    He has since rebuilt his body and his strength.

He has 3.5 sacks in 10 games this season and is a rotational DE on a pretty stacked DL.  He has 3.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovered and 4 passes defended - not setting the world on fire but he is contributing.   On a pace for 6 sacks if healthy.   I can give you long list of Bills first round draft busts that never did this  much.

It is too early to call him a bust, but with the benefit of hindsight we could all list better players that could have been picked.
