  1. TBD

He created the salary cap dead money issue. He threw away 2018 season and dismantled first playoff team in 17 years

He is partially complicit in the QB situation to start 2018.

His first FA class was terrible

The best player on the team was chosen by McD/Whaley

I love Allen and Beane's fate is sealed with him

  2. 4-4: Bills Away games: Titans (L), Cowboys (L), Browns (W), Steelers (L), Giants (W), Jets (W), Dolphins (W), Pats (L)

    5-3: Bills Home games: Broncos (W), Ravens (L), Eagles (L), Bengals (W), Skins (W), Jets (W), Dolphins (W), Pats (L)

9-7 and in the playoff hunt after Thanksgiving if the schedule is reasonable

The season results will hinge on the Jets, Dolphins, and Browns.  Sweep those games and they get to 9 wins.  They probably need to split Bal/Denver and get an upset somewhere to get to 10.  At Tenn, Dallas, and Pittsburgh are very difficult road games but Tenn and Pittsburgh have flaws.   If the Cleveland game is late in the year and both teams are in the playoff hunt, that will be a challenging game against that DL.

Indeed. Beane and McDermott don't seem like "tight end in the 1st" types to me. Ditto for WR, actually.

I have expected all along and continue to suspect that it will be a defensive tackle or edge rusher. Nothing has changed.

I also know they can't be happy with just Kroft, Croom, and Fisher. Hard to read the tea leaves on who they like in the draft, though, for the reason you mentioned.

They didn't draft him but Greg Olsen was a first round draft pick.  And McD has praised his presence on the Panthers.

"Yeah, I liked it when we were on offense, when it was third and about five, I knew we were going to go get a first down because we had Greg Olsen, McDermott started. "At an early age, I feel like that I learned how important that tight end position is to a quarterback and a particular young quarterback. It becomes a security blanket."

If you believe Beane and his BPA talk, then you should believe he would take BPA regardless of position.

I'm not disagreeing with you and I think it will be DL/Edge in the first round.

But it would be nice for once in the history of this franchise to have a dominant TE.

The Bills can find a quality starting TE in the mid rounds in this draft.

That's where a lot of NFL starting TE's are found anyways.

Very few Kellen Winslow Sr's out there who were high draft picks at TE and immediately turned into superstars.

Jeremy Shockey was drafted 14th, was ROY, and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie and subsequently 4 of his first 5 seasons.

2010'was the year Gronk and Graham were drafted.  They were picked right after Jeremy Gresham and Ed Dickson.   It's a crapshoot

Dickson was so good at Oregon.  I thought he would be better in the NFL.  He has stuck around for a while but has never been even mediocre.

Saying they have enough blocking with the kid from Cincinnati doesn't make sense

If the other team knows that kroft is primarily a blocker then it kind of gives away what play style you're running when you have him on the field vs the receiving te

That's why a guy like hock (and gronk) is so valuable, they are 3 down players who create confusion between whether they will be blocking, receiving, or both on that play

Kroft is supposed to be a capable reciever. He better be for what they paid him.

Antonio Gates is a first ballot HOF TE who was never an elite blocker.

Fant and Kroft would be the Bills version of Gronk and Hernandez.

I honestly would be happy with Hockenson too.

All that being said, I suspect McBeane will sit tight at 9 and take a defensive lineman.

I'm tired of people coming up with fantasies to trade down for a specific player.

If you trade down there is no guarantee your guy will be there, so you don't "trade back for player X" you have to say "I'm going to trade back and be okay taking playerX, player Y, player Z, player A or player B" at that spot/value

If you don't have a pupu platter you are okay choosing from at a specific spot that you trade back to then it's not worth it.

Of course there is no guarantee and you always have to have plan B. But if Hockenson and Fant are both gone by say 15 then there is a good chance a high quality DL is available.  You have to see how it all plays out. But if two QBs go in the top 8 and a team like Denver wants a QB then you can make a move.

...professing my ignorance up front because I don't get to see college ball, it seems like our collegiate ball "in the know" posters (I depend on them) have Hock as the runaway TE leader draftee...yet Davis has Fant at #9 and Hock at #18....does it make any sense?.....

I think most agree Hockenson is a more complete TE but I believe most feel Fant has more downfield explosiveness.

The Bills have enough blocking with the kid from Cinci. My take is they need a guy that can create mismatches against both LB and safeties.

  8. Charles Davis mock today has Bills taking Fant at #9.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001025021/article/charles-davis-2019-nfl-mock-draft-20-bengals-broncos-go-qb

Now as I posted, I would trade down and take Fant a little lower. But at least one person agrees with me.

What is the board's opinion of Davis? To be honest I never that much of his assessments which are only slightly better than his color analyst skills.

Since 2007, the Bills have made 12 first round picks. All but 1 (Josh Allen) have been from colleges in the Eastern Time Zone.It could be argued high rated QB’s are the easiest to scout.

Coincidence concerning those other 11 picks?

    Maybe, maybe not.

    Just something to think about.

Cool observation. The SEC is mostly in the Eastern time zone. The PAC12 has been a down conference for years.

Chemistry among offensive linemen is very important.  I don't know enough about these guys.  I think Allen plays a large part in building the chemistry.  I trust it will come and comes quickly.

I often wonder how true that is. Lots of cliches like "need time to gel". It makes sense but I really do wonder how critical it is. I think the center and QB making the correct line adjustments is the most important issue after sheer talent, followed by simply staying healthy. If they communicate well and Daboll doesn't make the assignments too difficult to understand they will be fine. All the projected starters have lots of game experience.

I marched it up against the positions they carried last year.  I agree with Kirby that they probably won't carry 10 OLs, as Fisher gives them the optionality if needed.  I think the team values position flexibility, which should give Long & Sirles a better shot than Bodine.  Bodine is a prime trade candidate.  If they got some value out of trading Marshall Newhouse, they definitely can get something for a starting C.

Though I would keep Bodine your idea of a trade is not without merit. He is starter capable and cheap. He could fetch a decent return player. I would not trade for a low round draft pick, but for a capable DL then I would consider it.

  12. I think they will only keep 9 this year. This group on paper is better than last years group with position flexibility. 4 tackles, 5 interior with depth at the center spot being the most crucial. Im not opposed to keeping 10 as Morse and Long do have a bit of an injury history.  I've posted before Bodine was adequate and is cheap. I also don't think that much of Teller but he is young, cheap, and I think he will beat out Feliciano for back up spot. This gives him a year to be groomed if Spain leaves.  I also believe they will draft long term answer at RT in round 2-3.

    Starters:

    Dawkins, Spain, Morse, Long, Nsekhe

    Backups:

Teller, OT draft pick, Bodine, Waddle

    Cuts:

Feliciano(#10 if they keep 10), Sirles, Ducasse, McDermott

    PS:

    Boettger

Completely disagree!!   The point of acquiring good players is to have them make the final roster and play in meaningful games starting in September.  Yes that's fine if every position on your roster is flush with talent, but if there's some positions like say LB ,safety, or even punter where you can bring in a rookie and there's a pretty high chance they make the roster, that's better than having 12 guys completing for 9 O-line slots or 5 to 6 WR slots and cutting the rest.  In nothing else, you wasted the signing bonus

I'm guessing at least one of these lineman they've just signed will be cut or maybe Teller, but he's on a cheap rookie contract so more incentive to keep him than a higher priced backup unless much, much better in talent. If it's a 5th or 6th round pick can likely hide that guy on the practice squad.  Or you hope maybe the higher draft pick that is at a position with depth, you hope he gets a hang nail so can hide him on IR for a year.

I get the feeling Teller is destined for the PS. He wasnt any better than Ducasse or Miller.  Hope Im wrong and he develops nicely. Because he would be a nice cheap backup at a minimum. Feliciano is probably the one most likely to not make the roster of the FA signings unless he can back up at C.

He hasn’t been marginal though. He has been a borderline dominant player but played behind 2 early picks (one of whom is an All-Pro). Nsekhe is our best OT now. He’s just old. He’s probably a 2-3 year solution.

I will trust you Kirby as your info is usually spot on. I see a guy who has 16 starts in four years and will take a wait and see approach if he can be an answer at RT.

Yea. That's it. I mean I could tell you stories about Jim Kelly being an ####### too. I've actually met these people. I also complimented two guys in that story. I've also met Bruce, Ruben Brown, John Holceck, Stevie Johnson, Fred, Moulds. I've been lucky enough to meet a lot of guys and most have been great. I've never had interactions like I did with Jim and I've never had someone like Leonard Smith call him out for being a dick to me.

But yea you're probably right. Lol his own teammate went at him for me. But please continue. Clown.

Edit- Fina also had a rep but was nice when I met him. Feel inclined to mention all the great guys I met because, don't insult the great andre Reed of the buffalo Bills on a show that shouldn't exist. It was just like nah maybe later. I don't know I'm wasting my time with this.

Andre's a douche. I've met him you watch him on an awful TV show. Enjoy life.

You didn’t meet him. You bothered him. You don’t know him. You interacted with him. Maybe he is not a great person. I remember him being quite bitter at the end of his career as they were trying to get him the receptions record. He said something to the effect of his catches weren't even real routes. Well that is because he couldn't get open anymore.

But a single interaction when asking for an autograph does not define a person.

Im curious though. You said you got the autograph in the end. How?

  16. They made Morse the highest paid center in the league. I hope he is top tier talent.

    That's just not so, Scott.

They were in a crappy situation with the cap and that had a huge impact on their personnel decisions.

The Bills went into last year's offseason in the later twenties in cap space rankings, with somewhere around $28 mill. To be precise, $29.3 million on February 12th.

    https://buffalonews.com/2018/02/12/salary-cap-bills-have-more-space-but-too-much-dead-money/

But at that point, Wood had already retired, but his dead money hadn't yet officially hit the cap, because his resignation was not official. His $10 mill bonus money was finally at the end of May all put against the 2018 salary cap, which lost the Bills about $5.5 mill, as his salary had only been $4.8 mill. So in February, the Bills knew they effectively had about $23 mill. Which would have put them in the lower quarter of the rankings.

Yeah, they cut a few guys and got it up into the thirties but those cuts - Tyrod and a few others - left holes and were motivated partly if not largely by the need to make some money available. And that was before they re-signed Kyle for 2018.

Already in bad shape, they knew they had to make it worse by absorbing so much extra cap space into the 2018 salary cap figure to clear the space that they are now finally enjoying in the 2019 season.

And on March 14th, after dumping Tyrod, going into the FA period, they had about $37 million. Not $50. And again, the $5.5 mill they knew Wood would cost hadn't yet hit the official cap figures. So practically it was $31.5 mill.

    https://apnews.com/b46c18d8192d4ef8a14d916488e317fc

More, this was after the Cordy Glenn trade to free up cap space and bring in draft capital. And yet going into FA they were still waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay below their final dead money total. On March 13th, after the Glenn trade, they had only $36 mill in dead cap. As they ended up at around $70 mill, things clearly got a lot worse.

    https://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/2018/03/5_thoughts_and_a_grade_for_buffalo_bills_trading_cordy_glenn.html

Their lack of cap space was a huge factor on signings last year, especially with their intention, announced to the Pegulas, of cleaning up the cap situation by this year, which they did an excellent job of. Huge.

Everything you wrote is accurate. But it does not explain paying Murphy and Ivory or even Star as much as Beane did. Star was adequate the rest of the signings were awful.

Beane signed so many guys on 1 year deals or team options, next year there may be enough other signings for Comp Pick gymnastics which didn’t seem possible before this haul of FAs

Great point. I was thinking the same but they are low tier guys that probably wont sign big deals in 2020. I guess Lawson or Hughes could walk next off season and sign decent sized deals but that seems less likely
