  1. He's right about the blowout losses being a concern. The defense especially against the run collapses for long periods of time. The defensive ranking last year is a mirage. The defense did not pressure the QB and turnovers were down. The pass rush needs to get much better and the offense needs to stay on the field longer.

I have no idea what he is talking about with the young QB do better with offensive minded HCs.

Manning x 2, Brady, Cam Newton, Luck, Lamar Jackson, Matt Ryan, Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger and hell even the likes of Andy Dalton, Carr, and Bridgewater all started their careers with defensive minded head coaches. LA , Dallas, and Philadelphia are recent examples of offensive minded coaches having success with young QBs.

Rosen is better than this board thinks and was a great move by Miami. The rest of Miami's roster is a dumpster fire. They will struggle to get to 3-13.

Brady had stretches last year where he looked his age and with Gronk gone the offense will be different.

Hard to argue that Shaq is worth $9.4M right now. That would put him as the 3rd or 4th highest paid Bills player. Can anyone justify that? I can’t.

I don’t think it’s out of the question that they potentially keep him around on a cheaper deal though. At worst he would be a good rotational/depth player.

And worst case, if he somehow takes a big step forward this year and the Bills can’t get a deal done, they can always tag him....

Trent Murphy will make $8.45 M if he makes the roster.  I can justify Shaq.

They evaluated the draft, free agency and coaching on the Jets, the Fins and the Patriots.....but not the Bills.  The guy who lives in South Beach almost fainted with praise for Josh Rosen and the Dolphins draft (he included Rosen as a 2nd round pick) and the free agency.....gave them a C.  They signed Fitz and one other guy, and lost Cam Wake, their QB and another guy.  They earned a C because they dumped some salary cap room for next year.  They all agreed that the future star QB in the East is Darnold, and then they went a little nuts over the New England draft, giving it an A+ because they drafted N'Keal Harry!!!  And Chase Winovich!!

Meanwhile, the Bills, who signed 17+ free agents and had a really good draft?  Not worth mentioning.  Our defense that finished #2 in the league with several key players missing?  Not a peep.  We played New England twice, San Diego, Baltimore, the Saints, the Colts, the Bears, the Packers and Vikings, the Texans, Titans and Jags, and still had the number 2 overall defense in the league.  Not even mentioned.

I know we're irrelevant.  We're not even a cute novelty to the media.  It's annoying.  The only people who pay any attention to this team at all are the fans and the team itself.

If your team needs to sign 17 free agents you don't deserve to be mentioned.

    Just win.

National exposure is all about winning. There is no anti-Buffalo bias. There is a losing bias. We lost for 17 years.

  4. Who cares? His cap number did not prevent them from signing anyone. That is all that matters. I would argue get same production at the same cost with Dareus but again its water under the bridge now and just need to move on.

Worst use of money is DeMarco followed by PED Murphy. With these two, the issue is not the money it is taking up roster spots that could be used more wisely

Excellent post and I agree with every word of it. I make you 100% right on the last sentence. I honestly believe that the top two guys on Buffalo's board were Ed Oliver and Quinnen Williams as 1A and 1B. If either of those guys were there they were taking them regardless of who else was left (Bosa, Allen, Hock etc).

Against the Pats their whole game plan was to neutralise him. It allowed countless 1v1 opportunities for the Rams EDGE guys and they couldn't get home. Oliver will make a massive difference to our defense as Donald does to the Rams defense.... but if they want to make it truly dominant they need the edge rushers to then win 1v1. That said Jerry Hughes would instantly be the #1 EDGE guy on the Rams so the Bills are already ahead of the game at this point..... but Jerry is 31 and will need to replacing very soon.

Lawson and Murphy had plenty of one on ones last year and were not good pass rushing.  Lawson is just a good all-aroubd DE. Taken in the third round no one would complain. Taken by Rex in the first and he is looked at in a different light. That does not mean he still can't bring value to the team. I think he can and picking up his option gives the Bills leverage.

I saw edge as the Bills biggest need, but Oliver and a future starting RT is a good draft.

Shock the world and get Clowney?? Unlikely but Bills did it with Biscuit to put them over the top.

  6. At this point it would take something truly catastrophic to see either lose their job after 2019 season. It would take something like 1-15 and Allen completely regressing.

Assuming they spend in FA again next year,  2020 needs a highly functioning Allen and the playoffs or they are both gone.

They hitched their future to Allen. I was all in on Allen last year too.  Still think Beane has Hero Syndrome with at least some hand in the salary cap crisis and the disaster of the o-line(failing to address not Richie and Wood retiring) last year. Add Peterman and the all too often complete blowouts and you can see some reasons for a shorter timeline.

But it’s all up to Allen now. Progress, run less, don’t get hurt.

I hate bringing up Aaron Donald because everyone and their mother is doing it but that's the most ideal comparison right now and he put up those numbers as a rookie from the DT position. So it's possible if Ed wants it, and I'm certain he want it.

Hope so. Donald was completely neutralized in NFC Championship and SuperBowl. I think they called his name once against the Pats

  8. DT is not an immediate impact position especially as a rookie. If he has 8 sacks rushing from the DT spot that would be amazing. I just hope he isn't a liability in the run game.

Agree he will help pass rush for others. But a rookie penetrating DT can get out of position quickly in defending the run game.

There is no point in stating anymore I wanted Allen or Hock. It's history now.

  9. Someone explain the downside of picking up Lawson's option?  Since the shoulder injury he has not had any career threatening injuries. They will have a ton of cap space either way.  He is solidly above average against the run. Lined up next to Oliver he might be a bit better in rushing the passer this year.  He rarely is beaten to the outside. He hustles and doesn't seem to take plays off like Star.  Has not been a liability in terms of penalties that I recall.  Honestly other than being chosen by Whaley what has he done or not done that Beane would not pick up the option?

As to the OP premise, I agree edge is the biggest need. It was the biggest need this year, that is why I wanted Allen.  An inside pass rush from Oliver would be great.  I hope he pans out. But if he most compares to Aaron Donald, well he disappeared in the playoffs and was completely neutralized by the Patriots.  That said, with today's NFL offenses, I'm not sure there are a lot of pass plays that even allow the time for an edge rusher to get home.  And pushing the pocket up the middle does force the QB to move and that byes the DE or OLB a bit more time.

I would pick up the Lawson option, and target OLB in FA or draft next year.  In today's defense the 4-3 Strong side OLB is really a hybrid guy.  He needs to play up in the base defense and move to DE in the nickel or dime packages.  He needs to be stout enough in the run especially against teams that have quality TE's than can run the ball effectively out of a 3 or 4 WR set.  Hard to find, but they are out there.  Allen or Sweat woudl have been great fits.

But I'm down with the Oliver pick now.  Hope his "first step" is better than Maybin's famed first step.

Why does a running back need a year to learn? We see rookie RBs tear it up every year. If anything a wr would need a year in the system to learn so they can be good by year 2-3

WR and DT are the hardest positions to transition to NFL. OT is now really difficult to evaluate/project with all the spread offenses. I have some hope for Phillips and maybe Zay.

  11. WR was last of my top 5 needs. I would have taken an edge rusher or WR in the third instead of a running back. But I'm ok with the group they have now. It's significantly better than a year ago.

TE is still a black hole for this team. I don't think anyone they have signed/drafted is as good a blocker as Clay was. The kid from Mississippi is intriguing. I think Ford was the right pick in the second round so I'm not going to complain about it. And trading back into the first for Fant was going to cost too much.

  12. I think Bodine may have some value. I'd wait and see how he and Long look in camp. If Long can backup center then you can try and move Bodine.

Backup MLB seems like spot of most need at this point.

Never liked the Murphy signing but they didn't do much to address edge pass rush so I think he gets another year to earn a paycheck and get hurt.

Ziggy probably has seen his chance come and go.

I think I'm ok with the WR group. It was the last of the five needs going into the draft.(TE, OT, DT, DE,WR).

If they are to make any move it would have to be for a pass rushing OLB

Now trade a ne t year pick for Clowney. Offseason Complete

Not a bad idea at all

Cut PED Murphy and pick up the 5th year option on Lawson.

Returns are rare? They were still about 50% last year...ST's are still a third of the game

Take away extra points and touchbacks, its actually closer to 15% of the plays.

Not saying it isn't a part of the game but special teams are not on the same level as the offense and defense units.

Penalties cause more harm than players actually making or missing plays on returns.

And this goes for the coordinator importance too.

Just build a high quality roster and reserve maybe one guy designated as a gunner type after PK, P and LS of course.

Maybe this kid is that guy. Likes to be physical and special teams is played in space so any size mismatch won't be an issue.

    19. JAQUAN JOHNSON | Miami (Fla.) 5101 | 191 lbs. | SR. Miami, Fla. (Killian) 11/6/1996 (age 22.48) #21 B

BACKGROUND: A four-star safety recruit out of high school, Jaquan Johnson played running back and defensive back at Miami Killian (where he was teammates with fellow University of Miami safety prospect Sheldrick Redwine) before choosing to focus only on defense his junior and senior seasons. He earned First Team All-State honors three times and is one of only a few players to earn First Team All-Dade County honors four times. Johnson was considered a top-10 safety nationally and committed to hometown Miami over Florida and Florida State. He accepted his invitation to the 2019 Senior Bowl. YEAR (GP/GS) TKLS TFL SACK FF PD INT NOTES 2015: (13/0) 26 0.0 0.0 1 1 1 2016: (13/5) 38 3.0 1.5 0 3 1 2017: (13/13) 96 3.0 1.0 3 8 4 Second Team All-American; Second Team All-ACC; Led team in tackles and interceptions; Team Captain 2018: (11/11) 92 1.5 0.0 2 3 2 Second Team All-ACC; Led team in tackles; Team Captain Total: (50/29) 252 7.5 2.5 6 15 8 HT WT ARM HAND WING 40-YD 20-YD 10-YD VJ BJ SS 3C BP COMBINE 5101 191 29 5/8 08 3/4 72 3/4 4.69 2.69 1.63 33 10’01” - - 18 (no shuttles or 3-cone – choice)

    PRO DAY 4.70 2.65 1.65 - - 4.18 7.20 - (stood on Combine jumps and bench)

STRENGTHS: Enjoys getting physical in run support…looks for the jarring hit and throws his body around…most comfortable in a high-to-low role, mirroring and squaring up backs…slices through the line of scrimmage to disrupt the backfield action…quick reflexes and doesn’t play passive…rangy ball skills and makes diving interceptions look basic…two-year team captain with sterling football character and trusted leadership traits…well-versed on special teams coverages including a blocked field goal as a senior.

WEAKNESSES: Undersized and occasionally plays like it…tight ends tower over him in man coverage…lacks the length to recover when he arrives too hot, missing tackles…needs to tighten his angles in the middle of the field…route anticipation is average-at-best, getting burned when he vacates his zone…lacks the long-speed to close the gap in pursuit…makes plays in front of him, but needs to expand his tunnel vision…lack of size leads to durability concerns, missing two games as a senior due to a hamstring issue (September 2018).

SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Miami (Fla.), Johnson entered the starting lineup as a sophomore safety and led the team in tackles as a junior and senior, earning defensive MVP honors in 2018. He was described as the “heart and soul” of the Hurricanes and the type of leader the other 10 players on the field look to for guidance. Johnson plays quick and decisive and covers a lot of ground, accounting for 14 turnovers (eight interceptions, six forced fumbles) in 29 starts. He is an eager run defender with the toughness required for downhill work, although his overaggressive appetite and lack of length lead to mistakes. Overall, Johnson is the type of tone-setter who affects the game with his passion and intangibles, but his lack of ideal size and speed will create limitations in the pro game, projecting as a special teamer and back-up safety.

    GRADE: 6th Round

That is 250 words. I can do it in much less.

    Best case scenario: Gunner

Worst case: he is broken on the first day of contact in camp.
