  1. Bills, Jets, Dolphins, and Browns are most dependent on the progress of their young QBs. Browns probably have the best defense and on paper the best collection of offensive skill players.

I think OBJ is overrated but I think the Browns pass rush is going to get even better.

    It's all about Mayfield though.

Absolutely agree with the OP’s overall point about home grown talent versus cap-crashing FA pickups. Of course, this FO had little choice this offseason considering the dearth of long term talent drafted by Overdorf , Whaley, et al, but long term their vision is clear. Also, unsurprisingly the QB is most important for that, such as Seahawks being able to parlay Wilson’s rookie deal with the first iteration of that Super Bowl roster.

Gilmore, Dareus, Watkins, Darby, and Glenn would all be starters on this team if not traded away or let walk.

There was more talent on the team than you give them credit. Whaley just couldn’t get the QB and Rex’s scheme and influence ruined everything.

Its 95% on Allen. If he flops then Beane and McD will be shown the door.

The real key to having success with players you draft is thinking enough of them to sign them to a 2nd contract after their rookie deal is finished..

It seems like it’s been a while since the Bills have done this with one of their picks and its likely Shaq Lawson won’t be breaking that drought...

Hopefully a few from the 2017 class will be retained..

McD let Gilmore walk. And then blew a 3rd round comp pick by keeping two too many special team depth players on the roster.

Whaley let Bradham walk before that and he has started ever since.

They gave better grades than the Bills to the Colts, Browns, Eagles, and the 49ers. Surprised the Patriots didn't get an A since they usually get it automatically because... well because because.

I’m not buying the Browns. OBJ is great but the Giants won that trade. TheGiants should have taken Allen. They could have gotten a QB later in the first.

  4. Cardinals should get a F-

As for Bills, I like many of the signings and picks.  I didn't much care for the guard signings until the landed Spain.  Same for the OT signings but with Ford drafted the group looks solid now for present and future. Oliver was my fourth choice after Allen, trade down, and Hockenson but with two of the three gone and probably no good value to trade down Oliver was the right choice.

My only worry is I do not recall another franchise signing as many free agents and making it work. New England with BB first two years perhaps. Can anyone else think of an example that had this much roster turnover and panned out?  On paper the line and WR group looks so much better.  But almost the entire offense will be new.  Incredible challenge for Daboll but far better than trotting out the same group of below average guys they had last year.

  5. I never wanted EJ.  A good example of a high character guy that simply was not good enough for the position.  Plenty of arm chair GMs in Buffalo wanted Nassib.  Hell when he fell past the third round I was saying they should draft him and let him and EJ compete.  Hindsight is amazing isn't it.  If you are going to criticize at least be willing to put your opinions out there ahead of time and own up to your mistakes.

Mine - I thought TT was good enough and if he makes two more completions in that Jax game(terrible overthrow in end-zone), he would have been the starter last year.  But just not turning the ball over is not good enough in today's NFL

  6. Player gives honest answer to a question.  Good for him.  Don't rip a guy for giving an honest answer.

It's not his job to be a mentor.  He was signed to be the starter.  If he was a third string bum like Anderson then maybe part of his job is to be a mentor.  But that is not the case in Denver.  They have a great defense and added weapons on offense.  He wants to win.  Good for him.

There were people saying that DiMarco could be a valuable piece given his versatility and blocking. I haven't seen much impact from DiMarco and while I don't doubt that there is a niche use for a blocking tight end but it seems like a position with limited utility in an increasingly more spread and passing oriented league.

I don't doubt the need for an upgrade to the blocking TE position but it seems like a position that is fairly easy to find at a much cheaper cost and a position that is more of a niche that has limited use.

Time to get rid of the DiMarco. He isn't even good at being a FB let alone the fact that FBs are useless. Still a role for a blocking TE.

i haven't heard or have seen your posts in a while...which...correct me if i'm wrong fellow members, are generally to the negative. as to my point, i thought castillo, frazier and rico were gumba hires. bobbie johnson with daboll are gonna be the backbone to this offense for years. juan and daboll were like oil and water. the only question mark on this staff is frazier. if mcd has to right the ship too many times he will be gone too. i am very happy otherwise with the coaches right now. we are gonna improve dramatically on all phases.

the only iffy part is defensive line scheme.

    Only question mark is Frazier????

Come on dude. What has Daboll done? He was a questionable hire last year with mostly unsuccessful NFL track record.  I would give him an incomplete grade for last year as the talent level on the line was terrible and Clay/KB regressed terribly.

This year he has enough pieces on paper to run a competent offense. I just hope he keeps it simple until they have time to gel.

  9. Still have the same coach that started Peterman and played for a tie in the Colts snow game.

Time for McDermott to step up. No more excuses about Rex/Whaley's players.

Barring an injury to Allen, they need 9 wins and still in the playoff hunt after Thanksgiving. Anything less with this schedule and McD should take most of the blame.

On paper many units are better except the linebackers and there you are just hoping Edmunds plays better.

And then 2016 happens, Tyrod Taylor gets hurt, E.J. Manuel gets benched, and we need rookie Cardale Jones to come in and finish the game.

Or last year, when we opted to trade A.J. McCarron and go with just Peterman and Allen. Then Peterman sucked in game one, Allen became the starter, and we had to scramble to find a third QB - Derek Anderson - to back up Allen.  Then Allen got hurt, Peterman still sucked, and we had to sign Barkley.

It makes sense to carry 3 QBs.  It’s the smart thing to do.  It’s what the Bills will do.  Allen, Barkley, Jackson - there’s your depth chart.

    .

Barkley is far better than the back ups you mentioned. Jackson is a PS level QB.  If Allen is hurt the season is lost anyways.

  11. Called this a long time ago. Bills just need two QBs this year. Barkley will do fine as a backup. There are too many young players like Teller and Levi Wallace to waste a roster spot on an emergency QB. If Allen gets hurt for an extended period the season is a waste anyways.  Best to just keep 2 QBs, roll the dice, and keep an extra young player.

This why I expect our D to "take a step back" this year in this type of category/ranking.

    Rushing:

1.) We gave up the 8th most rushing attempts with 440

2.) We were tied for 5th place in the most rushing TDs given up last season with 17

3.) We gave the 8th most 1st downs on rushes against our D, we gave up 111

    4.) 111/440 = 25% of rushes against resulted in a 1st down

    Passing:

1.) We were 31st in the league for pass attempts against with 492, only Oakland had few passes thrown against them

2.) We gave up 313 completions, which gives a completion % of  63.6% against us (10th lowest in the league)

3.) We were 26th in sacks

    Red Zone & Points:

1.) We were 3rd worst in the NFL on red zone TDs, we gave up 34 TDs on 48 attempts for a TD% of 70.8%

2.) We were tied for 8th worst in FGs against us, 88.9% made

3.) We gave up the 15th most points last year, right in the middle of the pack.with an average of 23.4

Our offense should be better and special teams will most likely improve, if our D continues to get skewered on a longer field, we will give up more yards and many will think we regressed, when that simply is not true based on what you have so eloquently pointed out above.

Every stat you showed points to a mediocre to poor defense. Unlike the yards against stat that says they were a top 5 defense, even the casual fan knows it was far from a dominating defense. As others have pointed out, McDermott's defense has gotten blown out in multiple games.  Odd given his conservative nature along with Frazier's.  Kyle has always been a liability against the run and generated little push in the pass rush last year.  Edmunds was flat out bad for half the year taking terrible angles to the RB. Without the turnovers of 2017, the defense really has been mostly bad.

On the positive however, Oliver should provide a needed inside pass rush. I think he will be a liability against the run. Almost all young DTs are. And most importantly Edmunds did seem to get better as the year went on. If he makes a big leap and the defense can force more passing attempts by stopping the offense on the early downs, then the strength of the defense, the secondary, should be able to make more plays.

It blows my mind how everyone prioritizes yards allowed as if that is a catch all marker of a defense. Is it helpful in assessing performance? Sure, but the scoreboard doesn't reflect yards gained, it reflects points - and on the most basic of levels, it's a defense's literal job to prevent the other team from scoring. In my mind, whichever defense does this the best, regardless of yards allowed, is the top defense in the league.

In defense of those talking about yards, it is the way the NFL ranks defenses. Again I think it is nonsense but it really shouldn't blow your mind becuase that is how defenses are ranked.

The #1 stat for a defense, IMHO, is points allowed per game.

Seems logical but I wonder if that is actually true.  First you have to subtract points given up by offense on turnovers and special teams. And just like yards, if you get a lead early the defense may give up garbage yards and points. And since it is an average, it doesn't take into account blowout losses like the Bills have had followed by low scoring games. Giving up 32 one week and 10 the next is not the same as giving up 21 in both games. My guess is statistically you have a better chance of going 2-0 giving up 21 points in each game than 32 in one and 10 in the next.
