If Josh sucks this year I am for full tank in 2020 to be in position for Lawrence. I think that kid would be in the top half of the league for QBs right now.

Edit: I should say I am not expecting Josh to suck. I think he will take a step forward.

Would you fire Beane and McD if Josh sucks? Would you give them another draft to get a QB?

So signing Peterman to compete for the third QB spot behind Carr and Glennon is a sign the Raiders are planning to tank? Wow.

No but letting him start against the Ravens was

I realize this type of hindsight thinking isn't productive, but can you imagine if we had somehow paid Gilmore the money his agent thought he was worth two years ago? White and Gilmore as your two shutdown CB's would have been a lot of fun...

If McD had paid Gilmore which he should have then they could have drafted Mahomes.

Not paying Gilmore was a huge mistake. This board is always saying build through the draft and extend your own. Well McD botched the first major decision he had to make. He made up for it a bit with a solid trade down for White. And don't even start with the Whaley was still GM nonsense.

That block may have put Jerry Kramer in the Hall of Fame, although he generally deserved it -- I think he just went in last summer.  That was the famous Ice Bowl NFL Championship game before Super Bowl II (pre-merger when the AFL was still operating) and I feel ancient because I remember it.

RIP Bart Starr.  All you ever heard was how much class he had.

One of the Packers linemen moved early. Not sure if it was Kramer or not.

  4. We only see a rare highlight and the playoff wins. Does anyone know if he was a good QB? I get the leader stuff but virtually the entire O-line and backfield is in the HOF.  I don't recall Starr being mentioned as a passer in the same era as say Unitas or Dawson.

I am not trying to create controversy, just asking if people know how good of a QB he was?

  5. Never heard of this guy but basically he is correct. If Allen doesn’t get better this team isn't going anywhere.  Eventually he needs to be a pocket passer. I think he will. I think a better OL and WR group will allow him to improve. I’m all in on Allen and have been since before the draft.  I wanted Allen, Rosen, Darnold, Mayfield in that order, but honestly only wanted Allen or Rosen.

  6. Tre is great. Every CB gives up some catches. But I don't think he is an elite CB just yet. Perhaps a better pass rush and another year of experience will let him become elite.

I was impressed Frazier and McD changed their philosophy and allowed Tre to shadow the best WR.  Hope they continue that next season.

Guy was the leader of a team that made it to four straight NFC championship games.  Statistically, he's a borderline case.  But the sustained success of those Eagle's teams should, imo, put him in.  Yes, he doesn't have the super bowl wins, but neither do the Bill's elite.

Those Bills teams won those AFC Championship games (one on the road) and didn't lose a playoff game at home until the Jags.  Eagles and Reid choked losing two conference championship games at home

  8. DE - Hughes is a year older and they did next to nothing to improve the back-ups.

OLB - Again, Lorax is older and was not very good for 12 of the 16 games last year.  Milano is coming off surgery that he should recover from but one never knows. And the draft only netted a small LB that can't tackle.

TE is a bit of a mixed bag - Only Smith is close to the blocker that Clay was but he is a liability in the pass game.  Clay's pass catching eroded terribly last year, but Kroft is now just as injury prone as Clay and the rest are unproven.

Back-up MLB is a mess too but it is hard to argue it is any worse than it was last year.

QB - with the addition of Barkley the team is much better than the start of the 2018 season.  Are they worse without Anderson?  Probably not but I've been in the camp of only keeping two QBs so I really don't care who they have in for OTAs and training camp.

None of those trades seem plausible to me. Why would a 2nd rounder get it done for Clowney? Why would a 5th be enough for Rudolph?

Because of the contracts. Yes Rudolph is worth more than a 5th but it is as much as teams are willing to give up AND take on his contract.

As for Clowney, he is not a superstar so a second seems quite accurate especially knowing you have to sign him to a long term cap space eating deal.

You're basically saying nothing at all. You're just blaming Beane for not keeping players around that they didn't want in the building. "He caused it" means zero, you're just parroting what other posters on this board with actual points to make have said. Beane got rid of players that weren't team-first players with bloated contracts and ate the cap hit for it. You're acting like he's the first GM to ever do that.

Dareus since being traded - 2 sacks and 41 tackles in 1 2/3 seasons. Sammy hasn't broken 600 yds in a single season since leaving. What exactly is your point? That we took a knee on last year to reset the roster? How is this going to be proven "right or wrong?" Nonsensical ridiculousness like these posts are a waste of time. You have a non-opinion.

You are correct I have a non-opinon. That is why it is called facts.

You are completely missing the point. I agree Beane's decisions are reasonable decisions that other GMs make. You can argue their merit, but I've moved on from that.

But you can not say Beane inherited the dead cap money. It's just not true no matter how hard you want to believe it.

Yeah...and?  Beane wants to build his team, not continue Whaleys team.

Are you saying it was wrong of him to get rid of a guy on a $100 million dollar contract who is only a one dimensional player?

Keep Watkins, pay him as a #1 WR who has averaged 30 catches and about 500 yards receiving in the last 3 years?  Who still has foot issues?   That’s what Beane should have done?

Im saying he didn't inherit a cap mess. He caused it and threw away 2018 season.

Its just a fact. Was it right or wrong will be decided in next couple of years based on Allen's performance and the rebuilt oline

We haven't been in cap hell for the last 20 years.  Not even close to it.

    All of them huh?

John Dorsey took over the Browns in December of 2017 and for the 2018 offseason....drum roll please....$110 million in cap space.

    https://www.dawgsbynature.com/2018/2/24/17049398/cleveland-browns-set-to-have-about-110-64-million-in-cap-space

There are several more GM's that didn't inherit cap hell.

The first year Beane took over, we had $50 million in dead cap.  Now that we had cap space this year, we signed over a dozen free agents.

Facts are helpful. Beane caused the dead cap by trading Watkins and Dareus.

This is another one of those moves that raises the floor for the Bills. They did A LOT of that this year. I think of signing like Gore, Nsekhe, Long, Gaines, Kroft, etc... Hughes is a better player than those guys but the point is the Bills eliminated, a potentially, gaping hole next year. The Bills still have a need on the edge moving forward but have 1 starting edge here already (plus maybe Murphy).

They can chase a star opposite him if they want (Clowney), a role player with upside (Beasley), a solid vet (Quinn), bring back their own (Lawson) or stand pat and wait for the draft. This move eliminates a need and desperation for the Bills. Great move!!

Well stated. Solid move. Hope it pays off.  Agree with the strategy.  Edge and WR still biggest issues on the team and that assumes Allen and Edmunds progress. Wish they had done the same with Gilmore.

After factoring in draft picks, they're about $20M under. Once in-season extensions/signings are accounted, you can probably figure that they'll roll $10M over into 2020. If the cap goes up by $10M from '19 to '20, then you're looking at around $80M in cap space once rollover money and new contracts from 2019 are factored into the equation.

Knock off $10M each for 2020 draft picks and 2020 in-season contract work, and the team will have about $60M to spend on free agent contracts.  Plenty of room to get a premium WR, premium EDGE rusher, and a CB2 while leaving room to fill secondary needs.

Agreed and that is before the dump PED Murphy  contract.

I think people are wayyyyy too optimistic about this year.  Thinking that brand new rookie and free agent starters are the key to success is usually a fool's errand.  That, in addition to the fact that Josh Allen could just as easily take a step back as he could forward, creates a real possibility this season could go very poorly.  After all, its not unusual that 2nd year quarterbacks regress.

I am glad we have upgrades all over the line, but those guys have never played in Daboll's system and have never played together.  The OL group, more than most, rely heavily on communication and chemistry, something they don't have.  I think they will pull it together, but I fully expect it to take a while, like half the season a while.

The defense should be good again, even though we still do not have much of a pass rush aside from Jerry who is aging.

Don't get me wrong, it could go really well.  But its not out of the question this is a tough year for them.

Year 3 of a tear down and rebuild can't fail. If it does then regime change is the only option. Injuries would be the only possible excuse to keep their jobs

    • Awesome! (+1) 1
  15. Bills, Jets, Dolphins, and Browns are most dependent on the progress of their young QBs. Browns probably have the best defense and on paper the best collection of offensive skill players.

I think OBJ is overrated but I think the Browns pass rush is going to get even better.

    It's all about Mayfield though.

Absolutely agree with the OP’s overall point about home grown talent versus cap-crashing FA pickups. Of course, this FO had little choice this offseason considering the dearth of long term talent drafted by Overdorf , Whaley, et al, but long term their vision is clear. Also, unsurprisingly the QB is most important for that, such as Seahawks being able to parlay Wilson’s rookie deal with the first iteration of that Super Bowl roster.

Gilmore, Dareus, Watkins, Darby, and Glenn would all be starters on this team if not traded away or let walk.

There was more talent on the team than you give them credit. Whaley just couldn’t get the QB and Rex’s scheme and influence ruined everything.

Its 95% on Allen. If he flops then Beane and McD will be shown the door.

The real key to having success with players you draft is thinking enough of them to sign them to a 2nd contract after their rookie deal is finished..

It seems like it’s been a while since the Bills have done this with one of their picks and its likely Shaq Lawson won’t be breaking that drought...

Hopefully a few from the 2017 class will be retained..

McD let Gilmore walk. And then blew a 3rd round comp pick by keeping two too many special team depth players on the roster.

Whaley let Bradham walk before that and he has started ever since.
