NFL Week #10 - Vikings at Bills - 1st half game thread
WideNine replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Teams have been cheating towards defending Allen and the pass in the red zone. Nice to see some commitment to the run down there. It will open other options. Seems this team has to relearn this each year. We keep running successfully we are going to see more single high looks from MN and things open up for Allen. -
Queue up more of the quicker routes and the screen plays. Then commit to having more balance with the rush attempts that we have watched dwindle over the past few games with a preference towards forcing it downfield into those 2-deep looks. Allen should be fine if he leans a bit more on the rest of his offensive weapons and they spread this out a bit better with their play selections. Needed to happen any way to draw more defenders into the box and put some teeth into their play-action so Allen can get more of those intermediate or deeper singe-coverage match-ups that usually favor our receivers. If the Bills pull off that offensive game plan, STOP turning it over, and plug those outside runs they have been giving up on D they turn this thing around.

The Colts should have figured this out before the trade deadline then had a fire sale with teams in the hunt to load up on picks for the next HC.

Terrel Bernard was absolutely abused yesterday
WideNine replied to TwistofFate's topic in The Stadium Wall
He needs more time to bake. There are a lot of nuances to Milano's game and a lot of it comes from making the appropriate reads very quickly and not a lot of delay reacting. Milano is able to beat blockers to the point of attack for this very reason. He ain't running blockers over to get to the right spots. The book on Bernard is that he is a very instinctual player with good football IQ, BUT asking him year 1 to step into that kind role on this defense is too tall an order. -
I have not seen Allen that pissed at a post-game presser since maybe that NE game where he fed their DBs quite the feast. Disappointed yes, but steaming mad and just wanting to shred something, not in a while. I do not give Allen a pass but do lay a good portion of this fail on Dorsey and Frazier for poor game plans. Sure, there was poor execution, but Dorsey went into the game as if our OL could hold up for a long count against the Jets DL. Cannot count how many times Allen got hit or OL players were forklifted into his lap. Even Morse who is a pretty good center was getting bull rushed into his lap. Dorsey needed to scheme the ball coming out faster, and we needed to keep pounding the rock. You cannot always just play "your game" you have to adjust enough to create better matchups against different opponents. The net result of "the plan" yesterday was Allen "feeling the rush" and being out of sync with his receivers and timing and making mistakes with the ball. I think we are coming into a true test of Dorsey as an OC vs Dorsey as a mentor in the QB room... hopefully just growing pains and he will figure things out, game plan better, and make better adjustments to what the defense is doing on game day. McD knows that the defense is now getting shredded with runs outside the tackles and knows that needs to change. It needed to change after the GB game. A lot still comes back to players taking bad angles and missing tackles, but those things need to be corrected. Our defense cannot allow teams to run the ball with a green QB who is prone to mistakes or chew up the clock and move the chains while keeping our offense on the bench. There is a lot of hurt pride, but we will see if this team is able to bounce back.

This team has not been very sharp since the bye week. There were some sloppy play and turnovers even before that, but some solid games too. I think defenses are figuring out some ways to bottle up the offense that Dorsey likes to run and making the games more difficult. We have shored up the soft middle of the DL we had last year, but now regularly give up chunks of rushing yards outside the tackles. Nothing is a given in this league and this team needs to focus on improving their fundamentals and understand they are going to have to go out and win the hard way. This is where McD has to step up and rally his coaches and the vets on the team lead by example.

Not sure if I agree as we only ran it 9x outside of Allen taking off. Even if it is only averaging 3 yards a pop you keep at it against a team with that kind of pass rush. You have to. If they ran more 12 with Morris as the extra TE Allen has a bit more time in the pocket to settle down. Dorsey did bring in an extra lineman and run it, but it usually served to signal the Jets to play run rather than the run coming out of your an alignment you are passing out of too. Just feel the game plan played into the strength of a very good Jets "D". The picks, sacks, and errant throws seem to back that up.

There are things to clean up. Dorsey as an OC is going to have to step up, and find the right way to reign in the sloppy turnovers. I thought I would see more 12 personnel with the extra TE because the Jets have given up a lot to TEs plus you have an extra blocker. Our D is getting gashed by outside runs and Frazier needs to figure that out, but the injuries are not helping. This game exposed issues that have been going on for a while this year. Hopefully Allen will be alright. The Jets brought a lot of pressure against the pass, and I do not think the game plan helped Allen enough.

Us old timers are more used to these kind of games than blow out wins. Get the antacid ready kids - these games happen.

Allen is a bit rattled by the rush. I mean his internal clock has been wound up where he is rushing throws and his receivers aren't in the area yet. It is these times where Dorsey should recognize what is going on and queue up plays to get that timing back. Going empty and leaving it all on Allen's shoulders may not be the best cure in those situations. We will see, Daboll ran into these situations with Allen, let's see what Dorsey can do to try to get Allen and the offense back in sync.

You can see the drop with our safeties. The young guys are good there is talent there, but they just lack that veteran recognition. Like Hamlin taking a poor angle on that swing pass - trailing the motion too far giving up the sticks, or taking bad angles on the toss sweeps. Hyde and Poyer have been so solid, their less flashy contributions diagnosing plays were easy to overlook.
