NFL Week # 16 - Bills at Bears - 1st half game thread
WideNine replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not to be negative as we have some folk that struggle with execution critique, but special teams needs to up their game. And defense may want to consider doing something different for their run defense. Hamlin drawing passes like a magnet -

That XP looked like it was setup on a weird hash mark and angle. Maybe just the camera. -

I don't know if a whole sale change in offensive philosophy would have worked out well either... Successful teams get their coaches and front offices raided. It is tough to maintain consistency with those transitions. Read an article about the AZ Cardinals having to rebuild and the premise was they should basically raid the Bills coaching staff and key FO personnel. -

Kurt Warner Breakdown of Josh Allen in the Miami Game
WideNine replied to JohnRVA's topic in The Stadium Wall
A perfectly fine analysis. Not sure what others are complaining about. There are times Allen bails early and misses the layup or misses the easy throw looking for the home run. This is not news. Warner did not spend a lot of time on those either, if folks had a bit more patience he was pretty balanced in his analysis. What I found enlightening were the many times he said he loved the designs of the plays, but often our receivers were just a little off running their routes, or off in their techniques or leverage getting off the press man coverage Miami prefers, and missing those small execution details limited the windows of opportunity the plays were designed to open for Allen. That made me feel better about some of Dorsey's play design, but also shows that there needs to be more focus on execution detail and ensuring players are running the right routes, with the right timing, to the right depths... success is in the details. I think Allen does need to get set and get rid of the ball more on schedule in the RZ. That comes from him both recognizing what the defense is doing, and trusting his reads and protection. I think that string of games with the RZ turnovers has made him a bit more hesitant to pull the trigger than he was last season. It is understandable and I think he is gradually working through it. Fortunately Allen is supremely gifted and can usually make something positive happen off schedule.- 77 replies

Honestly, I have watched some Cover1, All 22, and Cosell breakdowns where the routes seem either uninspired - everyone run a fly route, forcing Allen to hold the ball and expecting our WRs to simply to win those 1:1 situations, OR where there seems to be confusion where receivers end up in the same place allowing defenders to converge in coverage. As with most things the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Some of that is probably player execution and miscommunication. The flip side is that Dorsey is in his first year as an OC and some of his plays may be less than inspired. Part of that job is that you also have to coach up your players to execute the plays you draw up properly, and all the in-game communication and coordination that has to happen. A lot of the more nuanced routes happen in the slot, and we have seen them try a variety of players at that position over the course of the season. To be fair, they have also used different players in the slot by design - like when they move Diggs to the slot for a more favorable matchup. It was and is a big step for Dorsey to make from the QB room to the booth as OC and I think some of the struggles are just the growing pains that come with making that transition. There are a few others on the Bills staff with OC experience so it is not like Dorsey has to shoulder the whole burden this year alone. I am hoping he is getting plenty of support and is open to their input as he learns the ropes. I have heard plenty of times that being an NFL OC is the hardest job out there - I can believe it. -
So, reading the board, we lost again. 3-11. Sigh.

Myopic? When responding to blanket statements like "there’s no acknowledgment" Please. Some folks make those predictions you mention and the doom and gloom team comparisons, I largely ignore those and it doesnt bother me very much. There are no "complete" teams out there so it is a week by week matchup league. Look at mighty KC eeking out an OT win vs Houston. For me that has little to do with how my Bills execute plays, or the things I like to discuss that I think they could do better with the personnel they have. -

Apparently you have not read the recent posts regarding the play of the Jets and the Patriots this week. But you are welcome to think people on here aren’t aware of other teams flaws -

They did win, yet there is room for improvement. Some may think that is a negative statement, others may take that same statement and think the Bills beat a desparate team and did it without their "A" game. -

Other than a few extreme cases, I don't see that. I see fans that are happy we did enough to win, acknowledge the good plays, yet feel like this is also a place where they can discuss things the Bills could have done better. There is nothing wrong with that... but some folks overreact to any critique, and that is as bad as folks that cannot acknowledge any of the positives. -

I really am not that concerned with the issues other teams have, unless they are next on the schedule and the Bills can exploit those flaws to win. Do you actually believe folks on this board are not aware that other teams have flaws? Really? -

Odd way to celebrate don't you think? Starting a thread bitching about other fans takes. Seems a bit like pissing in the punchbowl. -

Have to apologize to the OP as I posted the same thing about receiver routes being on top of each other. I am pretty sure it is not all on Dorsey drawing them up that way, I have to think it is getting the right practice and reps in so players are executing those plays at a higher level. Say what you want about Daboll but he could draw up some fairly complex plays and pre-snap motions and it was rare that you saw miscues. -

And that is perfectly fine, and I am glad that works for you. The whole you do you and I do me thing has been a missing element to this - whatever this is. -

So if I get this right the Bills fans are divded into two camps. The "they" group who have the audacity to call themselves fans yet believe there are things the team could improve upon. Apparently this group also believes other teams don't have their own struggles... too? By saying "too", I guess that is an acknowledgement that the Bills have struggles? And the other group of true fans that see nothing the team needs to work on because it is a week to week league and the Bills got the "W"? This whole thread is mind numbing. Some fans just see the "W" and that is enough and good for them, some see the "W" and things they think the team could do better and that's fine too. -
I actually thought he had a better all-around game too and that will be sweet if he is finally playing himself back into form. Had a key pulling trap block that freed motor on our game winning drive too. I also laid some of that strip sack on Allen because he did hold the ball for a long time - Spencer has to stay on his feet and on his man though with a QB like Allen who lives and dies by extending plays... He had back surgery and who knows how long or if he would recover his old form. He could have a worse teacher than Kromer in regards to techniques to help against those wide 9 fast DE's with good bend. Tough assignment, but many teams are putting their best rusher on the right side these days. So just having to find that elite LT is a bit misleading, you have to have a good RT too.

Ultimately the execution is on Dorsey too, but I agree that players may not be executing the plays the way he draws them up. That is on him to fix with practice, reps, and rewarding playing time - OC is probably the toughest job out there. -
Hard pass. We have enough weapons on offense. Allen needs better protection, and Dorsey needs to draw up plays where our WRs are not running into eachother downfield and just find ways to setup the right rubs and picks and motion to create confusion that all OCs do to free their WRs. Or better practices if they are not executing plays correctly. Very few teams can line their WRs up and just have their guys consistently win the 1:1 battles. Even the play where we got the sweet DPI on McKenzie we basically had he and Davis running side by side down the field - that can't be the way he drew that play up right? We got the win and that is the important thing, but I have concerns....always

This on top of that epic embarrassment of a game against the Raiders... Pat fans will be jumping off bridges. Can't get enough of Chandler Jones just shoving Mac to the turf by his face as he runs over him for the game-clinching TD.

Nah... was entrigued back in '19 by Josh Oliver - size speed and very good hands out of San Jose and more of a catcher than a blocker. What I liked and what I thought Allen needed back then was a big target with a great catching radius, hands, and ability to get contested balls. The Bills had a shot at him in the draft, but he was picked up by the Jags. Tested out well at the combine too. But then all the injuries and he was finally traded to the Ravens. Now he looks a lot more bulky and like his best fit would be limited role as blocking TE, although he has caught some short EZ passes for TDs for them. We got the better end of the deal with Knox, especially when it comes to the durability aspect.
-
Truth. The guy I wanted the Bills to target over Knox ended up needing back surgery after 3 games went on IR, came back the next season and broke a bone in his foot during non-contact drills and went to IR again. Traded to another team so..... in hindsight those may be freak accidents, but glad we went the Knox route. The great ones are very hard to find, and the good ones are worth the investment to help them continue to hone their craft.

Well you see.. . it may just be a way to infuriate the grammar police.

Felt like Hamlin was a spectator out there in pass coverage on Saturday. The idea of cover 2 is that your DBs can jam and cover the flat knowing they have help over the top if they lose a step on a WR. Always see Hamlin arriving late to the scene with no angle to break up the pass or tackle the receiver. I was told here that Cover 1 did a breakdown that showed him doing well, but I did not see that Saturday night enough. Perhaps there is film out there showing reps where he is in the right spot at the right time and passes just aren't thrown. Hard to overlook all the times he is not.
