(OT) Why doesn't my wife wear stuff like this?
UConn James replied to zow2's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That explains the away jerseys.... -
There is now competition for the pixyland guy*. *Admittedly, I'm using a loose definition of the word "guy."

History has its day: Iraq and Vietnam

Two questions: 1. What the hell is with the guy in the beret at the top of the picture? 2. Shouldn't the blonde in front come with kneepads? It does say the trainees are "eager to please"....

History has its day: Iraq and Vietnam
UConn James replied to a topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My uncle was in Vietnam for three days when Tet started. Stationed on the northernmost hill in South Vietnam, 1/2 mile from the DMZ. Flipped through all of the grainy old pictures. ("There's the tree line for the DMZ".... "This was Charles. Not Chuck. Charles. He was very particular about that. I called him Chuck every chance I got. He got a letter one day, we didn't know what it was, he read it, went around behind the tank we sitting in the shade of and blew his brains out. We had to pick off gray matter from our uniforms."). The radio transmission on the day of Tet was, "SEVEN NVA DIVISIONS HEADING TO YOUR 20. DI-DI-MAO, MF'ER!!!" (For reference, there were three divisions in the entire Marine Corps at the time). 100 percent disability. He says, "I sure as sh-- wouldn't want to be there [iraq]." -
Sorry, but in true McLaughlin style, YOU'RE ALL WRONG! Jeff Buckley - "Grace"

[OT] Will some gun owners never learn?
UConn James replied to LabattBlue's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Or at least get a gun lock. They give these out FREE in the lobbies of police departments. You just walk right in, look around or ask, and take some. They won't even arrest you for it. Idiots like this who give responsible gun owners a bad name, and give gun-grabbers (from both parties now...) a talking point. -
Another interesting link. A tangent at the end on the Butt-Smack Rule :

He does it before every game, during warm-ups. Helps him relax, sayeth he. It was reported shortly after that the way he thought the rule was, was wrong.

1. Lost, 2. Extreme Makeover: Home Ed, 3. Desperate Housewives, 4. The West Wing and 5. nightly news with a big grain of salt ...are about the only things on television I bother to watch. And I'm not overly anxious if I miss them, except Lost is getting more like a can't-miss-or-else-you're-Lost. I watched Alias the first season, missed three episodes of the second, and when I came back, was like , and dropped it. No big loss.

Every time I pick up a 100-pound rock I could potentially drop the rock and crush my foot, even with heavy boots and be out of commission for a long time, office job or no, not even factoring in medical bills. This man is paid very well to do a job that he is not doing, after he's been medically cleared by doctors. Maybe the Jets or his next team should buy him a plastic bubble. How in the hellfire can you and others defend this guy and then rag on Ricky Williams?

I build stone walls in the summer and have tweaked my back a few times. If I pick up a rock the wrong way or trip, I might not be able to do the job again. My clients should pay me to stand there all day and look at the rocks and never build their wall. That way I'll be fresh and ready for my next client.

The fifth sentence Bush introduced him with was: "He's been confirmed by the Senate three times!" Described as a tough, fair pragmatist (I'm down with that), but with limited management experience. Maybe he can direct the use of Homeland Security monies for something besides lawn mower drag-racing in Texas.

NY Senator's Campaign Finance Director Indicted
UConn James replied to /dev/null's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
AD, how about changing your under-avatar sig to "Put-Down Artist." Really. How do you suppose it would be if Libertarians were in control of Congress? Or Greens? Or....? They can talk a good deal b/c they're on the outside. Truth is, if they're in there, they do the same thing. That thing about power corrupting and all. -
From the explanation of the mechanics, I'd rather have the punter (especially Moorman!) try it than a kicker. I'll have to try this next time I'm kicking FGs at Memorial Stadium....

Any suicide bombings since Arafat died?
UConn James replied to Pete's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I understand how someone could put the "new" label on Abbas. B/c while he was PM, he also resigned b/c Arafat was still basically running the entire show. As I said, let's see how he does w/o Arafat's henchmen standing behind his back w/ knives at the ready and if he can lessen the influence of Hamas and do something serious about the suicide bombers/attacks on settlements. And yes, hope that Israel will play ball as well. -

UConn James replied to Pete's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Actually you're both right and both wrong. Let's see what he can do w/o being under President-For-Life-Arafat. That last sentence doesn't exactly warm any cockles. -
Nick, the stats are interesting and give some hope for next year. But "weighting late season games more than early season games"? How about weighing early exit polls more than the final vote tally? And then next year, if the circumstances change, mid-season games should be weighted more heavily.... The Bills didn't make the playoffs b/c of W-L. The horse is dead, man.

I'm ashamed to be a Republican tonight.
UConn James replied to Losman-McGahee-Evans's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I was thinking the same thing, but yaknow, it's kind of pointless to talk to a brick wall. Surprisingly similar to the one in F9/11 who slunk away after indignantly asking "Who do you know who's fighting over there?" Thing is, she probably has that same indignation today even tho her and her loved ones' butts aren't on the front lines. Say what you want about the movie, I'd probably join you in much of the criticism, but that scene went to the heart of things. -

I guess some people just love the smell of civil war in the morning. 2005 Iraq is not 1970s-80s El Salvador or Columbia. Vive le difference. -
Bills TE situation next year
UConn James replied to EndZoneCrew's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep. Don't know if he'll be drafted. Depends on the Combine. But if not, he'll definitely be an UDFA who opens some eyes. I was throwing some w/ a high school pal this past summer and he, the QB Orlovsky (slated for 2nd-3rd round) and another player were working on their footwork w/ ropeladders on the ground and cones. On a Sunday. After getting their butts kicked in practices all week. And in 90-degree weather. They're both in SCal right now doing some intense training. Can you say dedication? -
Bills TE situation next year
UConn James replied to EndZoneCrew's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1. I also like the TEs. Look at how the Bills did w/o them. 2. There ain't crap for TEs in the entire draft that's an improvement over what is on the roster. I can tell everyone this several times and there are still calls for 'We need to draft a TE in the first!!' Umm. Anyone who's drafting a TE before the 4th round in April is going for position b/c they're desperate, rather than drafting according to talent. 3. Signing Free Agents is usually for areas where you need a stop-gap for the next one to three years. Franks is a prime example of this. The Bills sign him, and they can kiss away any chance of Euhus developing into an above average-to-good starter. The stats those players have had in the past do not immediately cross over w/o taking away from other players. Especially to an area that is less of a priority in this offense. -
Link. Small ad that you can click thru.... What he says about China and family planning is interesting. And the American values we need to discard in order to survive in the world: "unbridled consumerism" and our sense of isolation. I don't know if he's exactly right about the isolation part tho. We haven't truly practiced GW's warning to know whether leaving other countries alone on certain areas works.
