Yes, what a shock. And when you look at which presidents have done that the most since WWII got us to about the current political spectrum, people might be careful in how they vote. As ever, the pols doing the most bitching about it are the ones guilty of it in a 3-1 ratio, only when the Dems did it, they actually paid for it rather than getting us into massive interest payments that would even make a college kid shake their head. I've been slowly pulled over to what was formerly the Dark Side. Went to the air show up at Westover this past autumn, he and his GF are in security. That was truly awesome! Get frequent flyovers here in the NE corner of the state b/c it gives them nice beneath-radar contour training b/c we've got trees and not much else here in the Last Green Valley.

31 Marines Just Perished in a Chopper Crash
UConn James replied to Mark VI's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Oh dear. Think of about 30 families when you go to bed tonight.... and then hope that their loss somehow, someday, is worth it in the grand scheme of things. -
KD, I'm sad to report I was being entirely rational. (And I don't drink coffee. ) The relevant passage: I'd say C-130s and C-5s are roughly comparable to huge, lumbering airliners (When I first saw each of these in person I was like, Yeah right, this thing's never going to get off the ground!). My brother's plane took fire during takeoff out of Iraq last year and that red glow of the flares and other countermeasures, combined with an excellent pilot (who actually was flying Air Force One in Oct-Nov), were the only things that saved their butts. It can work in commercial airliners, it's a question of cost.

Why don't you let him out? -
PPP. Who needs anti-missile technology on commercial planes? Dept of Homeland Security, Texas branch, would rather spend the money on RVs exclusively used to transport demolition-derby lawn mowers. Could you imagine the horror if the terra-rists' lawn-mower-destructing technology surpassed ours? Who will the GOP blame for big government now?

Maybe that there's a whole world beyond "Death to all infidels," to stop blaming other people for their own problems, and that they shouldn't rely on us to clean up their mess for them?

wondrelic scores
UConn James replied to Happy Days Lois & Clark's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No, really. J.P. had to pee during it. (sift through the Bills-bashing). It's a fuggin' standardized test. Has as much bearing as SAT on how you're going to do in college. Read: not much. -

Wasn't JP's a little low b/c he really had to pee? I thought I read some amusing article about this.... -

honesty/character vs. presidential success
UConn James replied to jimshiz's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Editing a little bit, which I'll do below, a pattern emerges. I don't consider Nixon's an unsuccessful presidency. Got the country out of Vietnam, established communication w/ China that otherwise might have gone in a much worse direction than it has been, among other things. That said, he was a certified scumbag if you've heard some of the recorded conversations, and, of course, you know about Watergate.... I would consider Johnson to be of about average-to-good character who gets smeared by conspiracy nuts and people listen and say "Maybe so" as if the ramblings have a solid basis. He had some good moments but they were overshadowed by his micromanagement in Vietnam caused many of the problems. That he abdicated the Presidency in '68 was proof positive he was unsuccessful even in his own mind. (Tangentially, the funniest thing I've found in my textbook readings was that he was once asked by a reporter why wars happen. He unzips his pants, points, and says, "This!") As for G.W. Bush, it's doubtful that he's of "bad" character. I do believe that, overarchingly, he wants the good things to happen and this is more and more taking on the look of desiring the unacheivable and biting off much more than we can chew. This is exampled by his inaugural speech. But your assertion that being a dumb-ass and organizational structure resembling NASA in the spaceshuttle Challenger days ties into the character issue is wrong. That goes into the measure of success. His style of negotiation with people whose opinions differ is to not negotiate at all. Many senators on both sides have attested to this. I wouldn't be so quick to put his egg in the successful basket just yet.... The pattern that emerges is that presidents of "bad" character are successful in terms of getting things done and the results they get. The presidents of "good" character have mostly failed at producing effectual results. Another one of those headscratchers in a world that makes less and less sense with each passing day. But that has been the story of human history. Effective rulers usually turn out to be azzholes. -

They already have that. It's called the AHL. Only it's not in Buffalo.... Watch some college hockey. It's a lot better competition than the pros. Is the Frozen Four in Buffalo again this year? I forget.

What I did on my Autumn Vacation
UConn James replied to OnTheRocks's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Not unlike what is happening currently. Douglass wouldn't be shocked, and I think he'd tinker along just fine being civil and intelligent hisownself. In exactly what era of human history did we have civility and reason? The test is if its practitioners outnumbered or outgunned the baseness of the rest of society. -
Question about the face shields...
UConn James replied to USMCBillsFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wasn't making this up. It's not team-by-team, it's league-wide. NFL Rule Changes and Clarifications The disconnect b/w their reasoning to disallow tinted visors and then disallowing players from taking off their helmets is laughable. -
This is hardly the most "pseudo-vulgar" thing that's graced over the TBD bricks. Nary an hour ago on the main board: Let me guess, you're one of those people who blushes when they say "erection" on those Cialis ads? How dare I speak about systemic problems in our churches when it's clearly the Islamics who we're forming the posse over in this thread, b/c their systemic failure is the only one we're going to point out, nevermind that there's three fingers pointing back at us. How many Hail Marys and Our Fathers have I racked up so far?

He could just tell everybody in the building, "You're fired!" and then smoke 'em if he's got 'em.

Atlanta Would Be Smart To Do It One More Time
UConn James replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not averse to amassing two or three second- or third-round picks by trading Henry and your JJ scenario. Why pay first-round money for, what any other year, would be second-round talent? Only reason why I might want to get a first would be if Nugent's stock goes up and other teams start drooling over him. -

Right. Well, if the pedophelia epidemic isn't enough for you, try reading "Hitler's Pope" and then pretend that the same structure isn't there. Never mind the library of other monstrocities the leadership has endorsed or swept under the rug. The largest landowning entity in the WORLD, and they can't afford a settlement that will provide pysch. care to their victims? It is disgusting. It is also true. But don't bother yourself with that detail. Sorry, you can get back to talking about whippings, stonings, beheadings and the like.
