McCain Holds to Fiction, Not Principles
UConn James replied to blzrul's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Saw the interview last night. Nevermind that she didn't answer the questions regarding her state going after earmarks at her behest. Nevermind the question of how we are to believe someone who says that her administration would cut out earmarks (or, rather, the "closed-door" process of earmarks) when she's been among the most well-fed at the trough. It took her two false starts before uttering that absolute atrocity of a sentence. This is even after giving leeway for the oft spoken-to-written awkward translation. Like Gary Condit breathing a sigh of relief on 9/11/2001, I'm sure the Repubs are glad she doesn't have to face the Russert Primary. -
First thing that comes to mind for me about HJ is the year they instituted that 'removal of the helmet on the field' penalty. This was to discourage the showboating and individual attention. This happened at the first (and only) game I went to at RWS, vs. the Lions in '97. He took his helmet off after a big stop to force a FG try, just over the crown of his head and then suddenly remembered and shoved it back on. He got flagged for it, no leeway. Lions QB ran in for a TD on the next play. Always admired his play in my nascent years of following this team and the orchestration of his departure by our FO (to go along w/ Bruce, Andre & Thurman's) fairly pissed me off.

This is a trait I saw in him in his first game vs. the Pats b/c the difference b/w him and JP in the pocket was so stark in my eyes. Some QBs can sense the pressure and avoid it, others just get flustered under pressure and eat turf more often than not. Trent's pocket presence even at this relatively early stage reminds me a bit of... Dan Marino. Dude was just hard to get to. There were so many times when Bruce was THIS close to pounding Mr. Isatoner only to have a side shuffle and quick pass. It made the times when Bruce did get him (still sacked him quite a few times, but it could've been so many more if not for Marino's attributes) a little sweeter. Not saying TE=DM... obviously not. But the awareness/avoiding the hit and getting the ball away are similar.

Does any one know James Farthing, 42, of Williamsville?

Thanks for the extrapolation. Sounds like a pretty funky way to spend a Sunday. -

To be fair, Obama only had a relationship with the public persona of Wright. He's not responsible for Wright's private actions, nor would I really expect him to be aware of this stuff. How well do you know your minister, even one you really connected with? For those who went to college, how well did you know your academic advisor/professors who helped you shape your own thoughts? Do you know what's under their mattresses or in their cupboards? In 20 years, if you find out that a friend of yours raped someone while you knew them, does that mean you have to take responsibility for what they did privately? Obama has publicly divorced from Wright b/c the dude went nuts when the spotlight shone on him and the public and the private sides melded to create a pretty disgusting figure. I've had a few 'I don't even know who you are anymore' moments myself. Disclaimer: I'm not voting for Obama. I'm not voting for McCain. My only point here is to get us back to things that actually matter. Discuss actual policy. The health care thread a while back was a great example of this --- but judging from the general lack of interest shown in that thread, I'm forced to conclude that people would rather throw around vague boogey-man ex parte conspiracy theories about both campaigns... and then have the gall to bemoan the the lack of substantive debate! *edited

Scribo, just an observation, but what's the exact protocol? Perhaps the reason why (at least some of) those people refuse is that they think if they step outside, they're going to be escorted out of the stadium. Is it made clear to them that such groups really just want to have a discussion in the tunnel and then they'll (likely) be let back to their seat? Some people might figure, 'What do I have to lose, they're gonna throw me out anyway.' I understand it's the courteous thing to do by taking them aside so as to not embarrass them and not to detract others from the game, but it could backfire from the inference they make about your intentions. Such a statement as the italicized part could well be what happens in practice, but wasn't clarified. That must take some bravery at times! -
Owning a firearm is not a crime, in and of itself. Probably there for show (furthered by no ammo) in the off chance that something happens i.e. carjacking, etc. The likelihood is small (but rising these days) and often just the sight of a pistol is enough to make a small-time crook run or buys you some time. Ninety percent of the time police show up after everything's already happened so personal security is self-help --- despite all the cop shows on the teevee show you, police are pretty much there for the insurance paperwork.

If this behavior is strange, I think I should be in the loony bin. My Rolodex cover has a label where I wrote, "Frustrations in My Daily Life." Wanting a little time to yourself --- especially when family/friends/entourage/hangers-on and wannabes are at your place stressing you out after you've been injured --- and driving off without a !@#$ cellphone ringing 24/7 with people asking you where you are and what you're doing.... Since when is this a crime or even something to be worried about? Sounds like he's got quite a few people around him who have pretty warped delusions of their importance. 'Oh no. Vince walked away from us. He must be mentally unhinged!'

I know this might sound crazy, But

Must be that Uncle Tim had God on and brought up His past quotes.... I'm too much of a doubting Thomas to actually believe in that stuff, that he's looking down and cheering the Bills but, man, I really hope he is. TR is the first thing I'm going to think of when Buffalo wins a championship. -

Copy-editors are a thing of the past. And, stemming from that, so are newspapers' credibilities. -
Obama and his "Muslim faith"
UConn James replied to StupidNation's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I also fully get the sense that he meant that as in a so-called Muslim faith that his veiled accusers are charging. Only he didn't use the air quotes b/c he's not a complete tool. I'm not going to be voting for the guy, but for those of you who don't like him for his policy stances, say so and focus on that. Can we stop just making sh-- up about the candidates? This cloak and dagger 'Obama is a Muslim/terrorist/AntiChrist (Yes, I have heard people who've said that)' stuff, even for politics, is beyond the pale. -
Fixed. I don't give a rat's ass about an AFC Championship. That's like the Sabres celebrating about winning the President's Cup. The hockey gods especially do not favor those teams whose players breathe on it, look at it or even mention it.

Correct. The announcers said he was 'slow getting up,' and then they showed him up and moving/stretching his arms several seconds later. Haven't heard anything else mentioned about it, so I guess it wasn't anything.

Bryan Scott was down for a minute, but he got up and jogged to the sideline. Guess he just 'got the wind knocked outta him.'

Obama and his "Muslim faith"

Right. I.e. In the Carnahan posthumous election in '00, his wife was appointed by the Dem. Lt. Gov (who became Gov. upon Carnahan's death) to serve until '02, when they had a special election during the normal senate election cycle for the remaining 4 years of the term. Thanks for clarifying. But I seem to remember there being something about some states having the state legislature involved where the legislature decides on a candidate and then the gov. was bound to ceremonially appoint that candidate to meet that clause. This may have been a one-off incident by special legislation where the gov. was of a different party. May be historical but I don't think such a situation today would be a surprise. I just can't recall which state... it was one of those grade-school things that stuck in a craw. -
So much for the new "code of conduct"...
UConn James replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1) Yeah, they probably were looking for a confrontation from someone telling them to sit down. If anyone had a problem with it, they should have mentioned it to the Blue Coats. That's what they're there for... (I believe they have ejection power) especially these days when a call for acting civilly often gets you a black eye, or worse. 2) Well.... it was partly sunny. It was also partly downpour. -
Obama and his "Muslim faith"
UConn James replied to StupidNation's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Each state has different methods.... Some replace via governor appointment, some require special elections, and I believe some hash it out in the state legislature. And in there also, some states require such appointed seats to undergo election in the next round of statewide-office voting. Just found something. Link. -
By my count, that only turns the Jets into possible contenders... now that they've gotten rid of a QB who turns into a little girl the first time he gets roughed up a bit and replaced him with a guy who's a primadonna when he's off the field.

Obama and his "Muslim faith"
UConn James replied to StupidNation's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I hadn't heard that before. Just a technical question --- what would be the protocol if the younger Biden were to take his father's place in the Senate? I imagine that's way too high of a security risk to have a sitting senator serving full-time in Iraq, never mind that he'd have to be in DC to do that job. What happens in this case? -
MSNBC Drops Olbermann, Matthews as News Anchors

Sad to see what has happened and what is going to happen to NBC and its subsidiaries w/o uncle Tim. Sad to say, PBS with Lehrer is the last bastion. -
I don't expect Peters next week. You?
UConn James replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hope the performance was enough to get him . The OL played better today than almost all of last year (maybe the Cincy game) when our supposed 'best' player was in there. The run blocking was better than I've seen in a long time, especially on the Lynch TD that went left side. Yes, JP, you probably should've come back a little sooner. Looks like you and Parker just lost a little more leverage. Maybe we should stick with Walker at LT and put JP back at right... then he won't be underpaid anymore. -
Wonder how long this lasts.... But in the words of Thornton Wilder, "My advice to you is not to inquire why or wither, but just enjoy the ice cream while it's on your plate."

Will They Be Waterboarded?
UConn James replied to molson_golden2002's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Anti-government libertarians? There's a new one. Seriously, we all know you like to get a rise out of posters here (AD being the target here). It's what you do. You troll. It's also gotten you banned and led to the creation of many alternate screen names with your same M.O. WTF is wrong with you? Don't you have a job? Don't you have something else in your life that brings you joy? -
Regarding those kinds of stations, the broadcaster has had to secure the rights to play each performer's song in their setlists. That's usually handled by lawyers and with $. If a performer sends notification that they do not/no longer wish to have their song/s played on that channel, it probably depends on the contract they signed.... I dunno, I see this usage more along the lines of if a movie producer or commercial director wishes to use a song. The RNC is using it as a soundtrack. In that case, they would have to acquire permission from the performer, they can't just subscribe to a service and then use whichever song among them that they want. Big difference b/w using a stream feed in a venue vs. such a singled-out, exclusive, brand-creating use. I would think the RNC stops using it; it could be a little embarrassing if they continue and Heart makes a fuss about it. This deals with recorded music. In the case of the restaurant, if it were performed live, even a different band/musician than originally wrote/recorded the music, I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay those royalty fees --- once you talk about recording, however, permission to use the song must be secured. That's what all the scribbling and © things are on the liner notes. In theory, then, I suppose the RNC could continue to use "Barracuda" as long as someone performed it live and it never sees tape of any kind (fat chance nowadays). I would, however, expect other musicians and the RNC to honor the wishes of the performers who wrote/originally performed the song.
