“Cancel” / Knee-Jerk Culture of 2020 and beyond
Buffalo_Gal replied to RiotAct's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
What's the joke? Washington Foreskins, because they’re a bunch of *****. -
IPs can be tracked too. Everyone's IP is posted with every post (a moderator can see it). Invision used to allow for a way for the board owner to update the software so duplicate IPs on different member profiles would automatically give an altert (I have not worked with invision in almost 20 years, no idea if that has been updated to standard. It used to be a real treat back in the days of shared ips on aol, earthlink, etc., you'd have to ban whole providers.) There are ways around tracking an IP today including using a VPN, different internet providers per account (say home vs office vs phone), etc. Is there a rule on this forum that there is only one account per IP address? If so, that would be tough for my Hubby if he joined (although he uses a VPN for everything, so probably not).

This new account was silly, relied on feelings, and could not form a coherent sentence. I like to give the benefit of the doubt but was suspicious it was Muppy. Appreciate the confirmation. Ignore it is!

He's not wrong... This happened yesterday. Now, Mike Cernvich may not be everyone's cup of tea, and I have no idea who Owen Benjamin is (supposedly he's out there), but there are people bringing lawsuits fighting back. (It is worth reading the entire thread. These are simply bits and pieces.) People seem to feel this may have repercussions against PayPal and even, banks. We shall see.

The Media's Portrayal of Trump and His Presidency
Buffalo_Gal replied to Nanker's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Her resignation letter is ? ? ? </snip> Twitter is not on the masthead of The New York Times. But Twitter has become its ultimate editor. As the ethics and mores of that platform have become those of the paper, the paper itself has increasingly become a kind of performance space. Stories are chosen and told in a way to satisfy the narrowest of audiences, rather than to allow a curious public to read about the world and then draw their own conclusions. I was always taught that journalists were charged with writing the first rough draft of history. Now, history itself is one more ephemeral thing molded to fit the needs of a predetermined narrative. My own forays into Wrongthink have made me the subject of constant bullying by colleagues who disagree with my views. They have called me a Nazi and a racist; I have learned to brush off comments about how I’m “writing about the Jews again.” Several colleagues perceived to be friendly with me were badgered by coworkers. My work and my character are openly demeaned on company-wide Slack channels where masthead editors regularly weigh in. There, some coworkers insist I need to be rooted out if this company is to be a truly “inclusive” one, while others post ax emojis next to my name. Still other New York Times employees publicly smear me as a liar and a bigot on Twitter with no fear that harassing me will be met with appropriate action. They never are. There are terms for all of this: unlawful discrimination, hostile work environment, and constructive discharge. I’m no legal expert. But I know that this is wrong. </snip> -

Wayfair is trending on Twitter, WHY???

I do not know that there is a true atheist (although my son claims to be). I always call myself an agnostic... can't prove this is a god(s), cannot prove there isn't. I simply do not have faith. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

As someone who went off to Spain in February (and came home March 14th right after Trump closed down flights from Europe to non-US, non-green card, non-UK people (the UK got the boot shortly thereafter)), I agree with you. I chronicled earlier in this thread what was going on as we crossed over border after border, and what was being reported in various parts of the world. Spoiler alert: next to nothing. Not in January, not in February. In March Morocco was a bit more serious about who they let in and the questioning and forms, but Spain, and the UK were not. I told the story about the driver we had to the airport in Spain (in March) who laughed that the when Italy closed down, the citizens went over to Spain calling it "Vacation time!" (Probably why Madrid was so impacted.) People simply did not know. But once the world closed down, it was time for our local elected leaders to take this seriously. Not pack in the elderly with recovering COVID-19 patients. It took them until May (early June?) to decide that when they were residents of the nursing home diagnosed with COVID-19 the hospital would keep those people until they tested negative. Since people knew from Italy that this disproportionately killed the elderly, why was Cuomo sending non-residents to nursing home to recover? No bueno as we saw from the death statistics. And while he was sentencing some nursing home patients to death, others were denied visits to their doctors, or visits from family. I am guessing the long term health repercussions to Americans due to this virus is going to be even worse than the disease. The lock downs did the US no favors, and the suicides, un-diagnosed aliments, "non-critical" surgeries that were postponed ... negative health consequences of the shut downs are going to simply add exponentially to the numbers. China certainly has a lot to answer for... ? -
I now have enough olive oil for a year. I do not normally (never) buy Goya olive oil. This time I did because it is something we use and ? to the stupid cancel culture. Hubby buys Goya beans all the time (dry and canned depending on what he is making), I buy a few seasonings and their coconut milk. They are not losing that sale.

You've never surfed the Wayfair site, have you? They have always had odd really expensive prices on pieces that make no sense for what is being sold. The same color might be a totally different (reasonable) price. We are not talking Amazon where the price adjusts a few dollars based on color search or your search history, we are talking hundreds or thousands of dollars that just make no sense. A refresh may clear that, and so you think "glitch." And, that is probably what it is. Then too, they do have some (limited) higher priced products that people may not be familiar with and so those goods (and prices) may cause people to think WTF!?, when they are indeed priced to sell at that very high price. These days, I never say never to the people who want to dive into human and/or drug trafficking theories. There is no end to evil in this world. -
The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Buffalo_Gal replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
How can they become mandatory? I mean the government can make things difficult for people who do not want to get the vaccine, but how can they make it mandatory? And, we do not have enough flu vaccines for everyone. How long would it take to ramp-up COVID-19 vaccines for 330M people? To answer your question: If they come up with an inactive COVID-19 vaccine, I'd get that. Active virus? Pass. -

So, where do you two stand on Russian collusion? BTW, "if true" is the qualifier for many. Regardless of your theory, something hinkey is up with the Wayfair site. Mere glitches? Money laundering? Human trafficking? Who knows. But many "oddities" that have come to light the last 20-30 years after "conspiracy theorists" keep digging, and wellllll it is Spock eyebrow time for many. -
The New England Journal of Medicine Spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the Icelandic Population Study from April to June, Published July 11, 2020 Interview Link </snip> Roger Highfield, Science Director, talks to Kari Stefansson, whose genetic sequencing project has revealed how the UK infected Iceland, that children don’t seem to infect parents, and how to control COVID-19. </snip> Children under 10 are less likely to get infected than adults and if they get infected, they are less likely to get seriously ill. What is interesting is that even if children do get infected, they are less likely to transmit the disease to others than adults. We have not found a single instance of a child infecting parents. </snip>

The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19
Buffalo_Gal replied to Hedge's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
CDC: COVID-19 Deaths for Week Ending June 27 Down 91.9% From Mid-April Peak In the week that ended on June 27, there were 1,363 deaths in the United States involving COVID-19, which was a 91.9 percent drop from the peak of 16,895 COVID-involved deaths reported for the week that ended on April 18, according to the provisional COVID-19 death counts published by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The numbers updated by NCHS on July 13 show the weekly COVID-involved death count, based on death certificates, has been steadily dropping since the mid-April peak, even as the number of cases is rising, especially in Sunbelt states of Florida, Texas, Arizona and California. The NCHS reports COVID-involved deaths weekly, updating the numbers as more death certificates come in. Based on the July 13 data, COVID deaths for the week ending June 27 (1,363) dropped 50.1 percent from the 2,733 posted for the prior week of June 20. </snip> June 27 is the most recent week to fall within that two-weeks-ago reporting period. Preliminary data for the weeks ending July 4 (469 COVID deaths reported) and July 11 (137 COVID deaths reported) show the downward death count continues, even if those preliminary numbers will increase in the weeks ahead. </snip> -
