[Question] Former Bills who have found success in McD Era?
Buffalo716 replied to boyst's topic in The Stadium Wall
I was criticized constantly on the old Buffalo Bills message board Because I was adamant Stephon Gilmore was a all pro But regardless, woods was a stud here but underutilized.... and he got paid So good for him -

@HoofHearted Saban truly is the greatest college coach and defensive mind in the modern era of college His cover 3 match and cover 7 match principles have created his defensive dynasty but really cannot be replicated by lots of teams who try and copy His attention to detail on the defensive side... His ability to recruit and develop talent for his system... And get the players into the right technique is second to none.. he dictates offenses not vice versa Georgia certainly is building their program in the saban mold ... and since it's Kirby smart it makes sense But if you gonna run pattern matching zone coverages it better be your bread and butter ... like saban or McDermott and you better have the dogs A staple you can run in your sleep because rn even in D1... there are teams that are lost defensively when they go zone Players just can't execute Of course saban has perfected it along stops at Toledo and Michigan State and LSU and Alabama There is a lot of good young minds in football on the defensive side but Saban has the mold for sure
-
Well that was my point You need to have the players to execute... There's plenty of teams who try to execute things that they don't have the dogs to do When our entire secondary went down last year we didn't execute it as well and we had to get more basic
-
Im not saying saban runs palms as his go to ... just that he has ran it over the years which he definitely has utilized And I think you're confusing.. the ability to run something.. and the ability to run something well Every team can run the read option.. it doesn't mean they all do it successfully... There's plenty of high school teams that can hardly execute quarters... And give up 40 a game... They're not executing palms There are plenty of teams that when they run 2 read they look lost ... It's not a guarantee to be executed As a defensive coordinator you should understand that... There's plenty of things the Bills defense does well... And then there's things they try to do that they don't do well I've seen plenty of teams over 20 years execute palms terribly... So terribly they shouldn't play it
-
@HoofHearted I knew I had an old thread on it and I found it you are the last comment page 1 And tho I don't think the NFL is playing it off as new or innovative because it's not new I certainly don't think it's as easy to execute at a high level ... some teams just don't have the right guys... Tre and Dane and Micah and Poyer and benford are very heady players... cerebral... they fit it perfectly You need a defensive back field that is playing in cohesion, and has great field awareness, play recognition... saban has run it with success at Alabama because he recruits super heady cornerbacks.. the best/smartest HS corners and safeties in the country... perfect scheme fit St John bosco's can run it because they have five division one defensive backs ... I could run it at canisius because they have the best players in buffalo ... But I don't think it would work at JFK because they don't have the right guys or football ability Some NFL teams have super athletic corners who aren't thinkers ... just turn hips and run ... That team might not find as much success in palms as a team that value cerebral corners

Most of the people you see are just content creators People have a passion for football and they want to share their opinion... Even guys like JT who know what he's looking at.. and he does Is still giving you his opinion Because nobody knows the actual play call and duties that entail on the play... You can look at it and formalize an opinion But nobody knows the call... Sean McDermott calling a type of cover 3.. can literally have 5-10 variations.. based on the look the offense gives you... The personnel... The route combination... But nobody knows really besides him One side could be pattern matching and one not... One side could play the sticks and the other not... Are you playing tighter to the boundary or seam Sean runs palms out of a quarters look which turns into man... based on principles... 2 to 1 principle... Put cover 4 palms into the search engine.. I was the first one to mention it years ago ... But it's really not picked up by other pundits or even content creators Because most people don't understand a zone concept turning into man on a two to one principle inside to outside... And what they're looking at They're just giving an opinion of what they look at... guys like baldinger and JT have more advanced levels obviously And there's a good amount of people on this site that have played and coached football for a long time and know what they're looking at better than a lot of pundits on the web

We hardly tried running the ball I wouldn't say it was a atrocious but I wouldn't say there was plays to be made ALL day in the run game .. we barely tried...the defensive and offensive coordinators are having a chess match And some of the calls are JV esque.. right off rip... 2nd and 1 shotgun toss into a blitz... that's a jv call... You don't run someone laterally when you need one yard.. run an iso or a power O ... spider 2 y banana... shotgun toss is out thinking yourself ... The blitzing defender is setting the edge... 2nd and short has a high probability of someone coming off the edge That's literally just a terrible play call in a chess match... The bills could come out of four other formations and they have much better calls in their bag... but they get cute Our whole offense runs much better out of 12 personnel or 21.. get Josh under center for 2nd and one In a game of inches... That's why formations and timing of play calls are the difference... As a defensive guy myself hoof certainly has a better grasp of what we are doing than cover 1
-
Yea it's not a terrible call in the moment.. I understand it We haven't been able to cover all day .. zero blitz is going to make a quick decision and throw Micah is experienced and has been great in man coverage his entire career ... even at corner There's literally probably only a 20% chance of that ball being completed pre play .. with the blitz and difficulty of the throw It was a better throw to counter the call ... but Ridley is much better in zone than man , so you go at their guy and don't let him sit in a zone

The Packers did play in London -
The interception to diggs I believe he absolutely was getting pressure in his face Couldn't step up... And still threw the ball 60 yards in the air
-
Didn't allow a sack in his college career... I love that the bills value versatility which is great for building a roster... But we needed a true power guard And we got a great one

I'm done betting Notre Dame also.. this is my bills rule I'm too attached to Notre Dame to take any lines with them regardless how good or bad they are As a die-hard Catholic whose dream goal was to play football at Notre Dame I'm too deep I'm smart enough of a bettor to take my heart out of it and just cross it off

Mo seems to suck versus non-conference and is really good in conference We just still might win the mac East MAC football is crazy after all

Kyle Orton: Why doesn't he get a little ex-Bill love?
Buffalo716 replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall
Comparing a 28 year old prime WR vs a formally retired QB we brought out of retirement who NEVER had athleticism... is asinine It's literally a stupid comparison... Orton was gonna retire before we dragged him back He wasn't a prime athlete And thinking he's taking that hit is stupid considering his age and style ... most QBs are sliding and that's a fact 99% of players value health and he's not a RB Bills fans value toughness over talent.. they will take a less talented player who is tough over talent for 60 years of this franchise Orton wouldn't have played again if he didn't slide but bills fans would rather have him demolished and talk what if -
Unless they are serious criminals ! 😄😂
