How newly formed relationships with teammates are helping Ed Oliver’s game flourish “Jordan (Phillips) was the first guy’s house I went over to and he had the dog over there,” said Oliver. “He had the bite suit on and ever since then he’s been cool. He has a ton of respect for Kyle. I remember when we came down to visit him pre-draft he was asking us questions about Kyle. He was familiar with him. So when Kyle arrived he was hanging on every word. Everything that Kyle talked about, technique, preparation, it was all very beneficial. Hopefully we keep those two guys in touch.” Not surprisingly, as Oliver interacted more with his veteran teammates his personal game became more disruptive on the field.

Bills TE Dawson Knox, now healthy, feels like a 'kid on Christmas' The Bills haven’t seen much out of tight end Dawson Knox. That’s not really the rookie’s fault, though. He’s been dealing with a hamstring injury which he suffered early in training camp. This week, Knox’s status is improving. He’s out on the field doing some work, but as things go with hamstring injuries, the team is working him in slowly in hopes of him not re-aggravating the strain. But regardless of how things shake out, quarterback Josh Allen said he’s happy for Knox and Croom to be working their way back into the lineup. “It’s good to have them back obviously they’ve been out for a couple of weeks now. It’s just a different flow with the offense when they’re in there. It’s fun to have them back. It gives Tommy and Lee a little break, I know they were working really hard. Trying to manage all the reps that they were getting. To have those guys back it, solidifies the depth a little bit more there,” Allen said. It’s unclear how much Knox will play in Buffalo’s third preseason game on Friday against the Lions, but the Bills will likely want to get him in, if they can.

Ranking NFL coaches who could get fired with disastrous seasons Continuing a tradition that we began two years ago, we've taken a data-driven look at which NFL head coaches are sitting on the hottest seats entering the 2019 season. We're not predicting which coaches will be fired; that involves two separate factors in how hot each seat is, and the fortunes of each team in 2019. Instead, we isolated the first factor -- the heat under all 32 seats -- by assuming they will all have the same losing season. Specifically, we presupposed every team would finish the year 4-12, and then asked our analytical model to make a projection on the fate of each coach. We've tested the model against every season for the past 40 years, and it's correct 80 percent of the time when using a cutoff of more than 50% predicting a firing and less than 50% predicting retention. At the end of last season, the model was accurate on four of the five most likely coaches to be replaced. These are the hottest seats entering 2019, assuming a four-win season: 1. With Josh Allen, the Bills are using the blueprint that turned Cam Newton into the NFL MVP In Carolina, Newton had to grow over four seasons before the Panthers got him the support he needed to emerge as league MVP. The result was a trip to Super Bowl 50. With the Bills' brass having that run fresh in mind, they are doing their best to accelerate Allen's development in a similar way. At wide receiver, the Bills now have a savvy, speedy field-stretcher in John Brown and an inside/possession option in Cole Beasley. At running back, they have LeSean McCoy in a committee that includes the ageless Frank Gore and rookie Devin Singletary. At tight end, they have multiple athletic targets. They also have a rebuilt offensive line, where left tackle Dion Dawkins in the only starting holdover. As was the case with Newton early in his career, the biggest concerns with Allen are decision-making and accuracy. Like Newton did, Allen has made up for his passing errors with fast, physical running. The 6-5, 237-pounder rushed for 631 yards and eight touchdowns in 12 games as a rookie. Over a full season, that projects to 841 yards and 11 TDs - right on par with the best of Newton's ground game.

NFL 2019 Win Totals: Over/Under Predictions For Patriots, Jets, Bills, Dolphins, AFC East Pick the writer seems to be on his knees with his patsie prediction, nothing unexpected there but the J-E-T-S finishing in 2nd place? New York Jets: 7 Wins (-165 Over/+140 Under) One AFC East team besides the Patriots isn't going to be awful. The Jets have the best chance to fill that spot. Sam Darnold showed real signs of improvement at the end of last year, and he now has a star playmaker in Le’Veon Bell. New York’s defense might not be very good, though it should play well enough from Week 8-13 when the Jets face six mediocre quarterbacks. Prediction: Over Buffalo Bills: 6.5 Wins (-186 Over/+155 Under) There’s way too much juice on the over to bet the Bills. Josh Allen’s inaccuracy is going to be a major issue if he’s unable to be as prolific of a runner as he was at times last year. A slow start to the season could cripple Buffalo, considering they end the year with five straight games against the Cowboys, Ravens, Steelers, Patriots and Jets, three of which are on the road. Prediction: Under myself, I'm hovering around 9-10 wins for the bills.

Matt Barkley might be the Bills' most reliable backup QB since Frank Reich Allen has all the skills and intangibles required to become a star, but he’s staring at a long journey with his second year just getting underway. Kelly’s he’s not, at least not yet. In Barkley, the Bills have a polished player who’s got viable NFL experience under his belt and has proven that if you need him to play — see the Jets game in New York last year — he can get the job done. “It’s good to have Matt,” coach Sean McDermott said. “I really appreciate the way he plays and his leadership on this team, the way he works, his work with Josh and Tyree (Jackson) and that’s an important piece as the backup quarterback. He’s done a real nice job to this point.” Does Barkley have a Reich-like greatest-comeback-of-all-time game in him? Maybe not, but just the way he works with Allen brings back memories — fading as they are — of Kelly leaning on Reich, whom he often credits with helping him grow and mature as an NFL player and an eventual Hall of Famer.
