I know it's early, and I'm certainly not anointing Josh as the second coming, (although he certainly appears to be moving along nicely towards what many think he may ultimately be capable of). It just strikes me that for the first time in a long time, we seem to be in really good shape as to both starting and back-up qb. Are he and Barkely the best pair since Kelly-Reich, the gold standard? How about Bledsoe-Van Pelt, or Flutie-Johnson? Any others? Thoughts?

my question was meant to discuss whether it is really worthwhile to use a PS spot on a developmental QB, or is there an opportunity cost to that, if in fact a PS qb almost never goes on to be a serviceable starter or backup, as indeed seems to be the case based on those who provided relevant answers, (thanks), and perhaps it is more worthwhile to use those 10 PS spots on other positions that have shown a greater historical ability to make an active roster as a starter or back-up.

the necessity of a third arm for practice aside, It appears the shot is so long for a qb, you might be better off using the spot for a position (Foster?) where the historical evidence shows a greater chance of success. As for having a player available to come in, even to back up in case of injury, would you rather have somebody like Barkley who I believe was on the street, and had minimal time to work with the team before he started, or somebody like Tyree? Maybe it's me, I just don't see any empirical evidence of much value in a PS developmental qb. To those that say why not, what's the harm, there may well be an opportunity cost associated with such a move.

There has been a lot of talk about 'stashing' QB Tyree Jackson on the practice squad as a developmental qb. My question to all of those who know much more than me, "how many qb's started out on a practice squad and ultimately became a legitimate nfl qb starter or even back-up? I can't think of one, but I certainly could be missing somebody.

Who to draft on Day 2

fair enough, but if they don't value OL highly, we're screwed -
Who to draft on Day 2
lookylookyherecomescookie replied to ProcessYaDigg's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I haven't seen this addressed, and am curious as to what others think. I'm under the impression that while college to pro transition is difficult, it is most difficult for OL and WR. (QB aside, as that is a whole different animal). It seems to me that the Bills were most active in signing FA's this year in these two groups. Is it possible that they are willing to let other NFL teams be a training ground for their eventual WR's and OL, and they will concentrate their draft pix on position groups where the pix can make a much quicker contribution? I realize we had huge needs with these two groups, but perhaps draft strategy is affected by transition difficulty. Thoughts? -

I wonder if you could do that with all the Bill's choices you ranked last draft. Where (what round) you ranked them, and where you would have ranked them last year if their 2018 Bills tape was their 2017 college tape. I know this might be some work for you, but I'd really like to know which of these guys, in your mind, over or under performed, based on your original rankings. -

Gunner, in as much as I really respect your knowledge and judgement, where would you put JA in last year's draft knowing what you know now? -
FWIW- Kraft will face 3 penalties 1. personal- humiliation and blow (no pun) to reputation. This has already occurred and will be ongoing 2. legal- florida misdemeanor- probably just a fine and maybe something like paying for or establishing an outreach program educating about or fighting against human trafficking 3. NFL- this is the interesting one if Kraft has the support of the other owners- $1 million fine and one year suspension. This will make it look like the NFL is serious, but won't really cost anyone anything if the owners think Kraft is a jerk- he'll have to sell the team. This accomplishes 3 things. The other owners won't have to deal with him anymore, it will make it look like the NFL is really serious about this, and most importantly, a forced sale of this franchise will result in a HUGE purchase price which in turn will instantly (on paper at least) increase the value of every other owners team. That's what Kraft really has to worry about. (I have no idea of his standing with the other owners).

Alex Smith Likely to miss all of 2019

EVERY draft choice is a pig in a poke. You NEVER know what you're getting. (Mike Williams). That's why 2 draft choices are better than one, and why trading down is almost always the right choice. Possible exception is trading up for a qb because in today's nfl, a good qb can be worth 3 or 4 good players at other positions. And a good qb on a rookie contract is worth so much more financially than than a good player on a rookie contract at any other position.
