He definitely had a clue, and it wasn't nearly as bad or good as some here are making it out to be. He likes Buffalo, the fans, and his teammates a lot though.
Based on trade value they would need #34 (560), 2018 1st Rd (420), #66 (260), and #109 (76) to get to 1316 (#10 is worth 1300). I can't see them giving next year's 1st with this year's 2nd, 3rd, & 4th. More likely they just snag him at #2 overall.
I get this, but I would hope we don't have a system change before a mid-round picks contract is up. Switching coaches every 2 years is a great way to stay in the basement. If the QB fits what Dennison wants to do then there's a good chance he will look good.
I took a look about a week ago in another thread. I think the TENN option would be bad, but otherwise here's some trade value stuff including 2018 1st's:
I'm not defending the organization. I have no idea what their board looks like, and neither do you. You are just complaining about what you think it looks like, how it differs from your amateur assessment, and how you think it will ruin the team long term. And you repeat this process about the draft ad nauseam.
You've shared your opinion plenty, and it's clear you disagree with them on many things, which you've also shared plenty. How many times do you want to share how if they don't take Mahomes at 10 they are completely clueless before the draft even happens?
So basically what you're getting at is that you believe your man-crush on Mahomes is a better evaluation than whatever the people paid to evaluate at One Bills Drive will come up with?
I get that that's how you've evaluated it, but I do my own evaluations. My highest graded QB this year is 6 points lower than the grade I had on Carr. I do not see a Derek Carr in this class. I also do not see any QBs with no flaws coming out next year, but my preliminary evals give me much higher hopes than this year's class.
I don't think '03 is that far off from my expectations of '17. If this class yields a Carson Palmer and a Byron Leftwich it would exceed my expectations.
At the end of the day, not selecting a QB in '03 turned out to be a good choice, and the Bills did take a shot on a QB in a much better class. Shame it didn't work out, but the logic was sound. If I'm not mistaken you expect us to win 5-6 games this year. That normally nets you a pick in the 6-10 range, which will give you a nice shot at one of the top prospects. If you're worried beyond that you trade up to get your guy like Washington or Philly.
