As I've said on other threads, the issue is the rule book and the randomness it creates in the games. There was no need to emphasize the pass defense infractions this year. The game is at modern history highs in scoring, passing, and offense. Why the hell did they decide to introduce more penalties into the game and more room for the officials to influence outcomes.
-
What bothers me is the so-called increased emphasis on pass defense rules this season i.e. 5 yards etc. There was no evidence this needed to happen, scoring is up to 24 ppg, yards per game trending up over 350 game, and now penalties are higher than ever! The randomness of these games related to rule book and officials calls is a joke. I suppose anybody under 30 who has grown up with this doesn't know any better. But, as an over 30 who has seen a very different and more rounded game this football is pathetic entertainment. Im started to question spending my time watching this.
-
So I take it you like the game as is?
-
I don't think the game is rigged or part of some conspiracy. But, I do wonder about the state of the rules in the NFL. They decided to emphasize the pass defense rules again last offseason. Why I ask? in 2012/13 the league averaged 22.8/23.4 PPG and 347.2/348.5 yards per game. QBs averaged 235.6 yards per game, this includes everyone! I think the league has gotten to the point with rules where the referees have too big an impact on the game. Just my observation. I know I'm not enjoying watching this stuff, and its not settling down as the season progresses.

Calling out Robert Woods

Even worse is his body language throughout the game. He looks like he's sulking almost all the time! -

Actually there is a third group, those who think they are above it all. Nothing wrong with debating or discussing Never made that argument, don't put words in my mouth. My point is and always has been that was an inconsistent call. -

Why do you think it is obvious the ref saw it? I mean if it takes slow motion replay to see it! I have seen that same play called offsides defense more often than not. Thats inconsistent. -

The refereeing in the NFL is laughable inconsistent due to a contrived rulebook to add offense to the game. -

I bet you believe in giving speeding tickets for going 56mph too. You miss the point, the letter of the law is not the issue, it is consistency in officiating. And, if you believe the NFL referees are consistent-God help you. -

Absolutely true. I like your analogy. -
I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I do think that the culture of a winning football team includes NOT BEATING YOURSELF! At the end of the day teams that win the SB have talent and don't beat themselves. We have not arrived there mentally and I'm still watching and hoping for that breakthrough. A team like KC has decent not great talent, but doesn't beat themselves.

Day after sanity
D. L. Hot-Flamethrower replied to D. L. Hot-Flamethrower's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hope you are not serious and this is a joke. He missed some throws made some throws. He didn't turn the ball over. Whether you think he is the answer or not, he was NOT the biggest problem yesterday. Agreed we have more talent that has been proven the last 2 years against those guys. What they do is not beat themselves. WE DO! Not sure that is true. Enough horses in the barn to win a lot of those games and get some momentum for the final quarter and split those four. The biggest question to me is will this coaching staff figure out how not to beat ourselves in time, and that is debatable. Nice call! -
By far the biggest momentum changing sequence was the McKelvin fumble and giving them possession at our 26. We had just stopped them at their 16 yard line with 10:39 to go in the fourth. The defense seemed to play the next two plays after the fumble like they were completely demoralized, and KC played like they had just seen the opening. As a result, our Win Probability Added from PFR when from 82.8% to 22.3% in less than a handful of plays. Up to that point, all the plays threads have talked about, Bryce Brown fumble, Henderson twitching, Manny Lawson not staying home on the Charles TD run, A.Williams unnecessary roughness, Play-calling,dropped passes, decisions etc. the Bills had OVERCOME them! For some reason the House of Cards collapsed at this point. My take is it still is a cultural problem with the team. We need to be able to maintain mentally the whole game. The attitude of "how many things can wrong and then panic", must be replaced for the whole game. This is transition moment in the game and we didn't recognize it and finish the deal. Furthermore, the two units on the field recovered, and we regained our chances of winning. With 4:35 to go , we had just stopped them again, forced a punt and McKelvin made a nice return to their 25. Orton and Woods then combined on a nice pass to the 16, followed by a first down run by Summers. We had a 58.2% chance of winning at the point. Then four straight incompletions! Yeah Orton missed a couple that could have been made. It is here that the sidelines can be brought into question for putting the offense in the remaining situation due to there decisions. After the fourth incompletion, WPA was at 8.9%. In summary, all the units had their moments and controlled most of the game. In the end, we still don't know how to finish it out mentally.

Agree with this. I mean come people it was not obvious he twitched. If its even debatable don't call it. Whats next he blinked! When was the lost time you saw the same play happen and they called it on the offense-NEVER! -
If we are looking for one bottom line here
D. L. Hot-Flamethrower replied to Big C's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Orton is not the biggest problem we have. Get over yourselves. Yes he missed some throws, this happens every game with every QB! Bottom Line is it sucks we lost and are 5-4 with the playoffs looking bleak, all it would have taken was one thing going right at the right time and we see a different game. The Bryce Brown fumble is just raw BS. -
Nice coaching, awesome job

How do you know they weren't going to run a play. The Chiefs jumped offsides before we snapped it! -

There were calls at the wrong times that definitely were disputable. Yes there were plays that the Bills didn't make that piss me off too. However, to deny that calls against you at the wrong time have no impact is just wrong -they do. Nothing happens in a vacuum and one thing builds of another. Bottom line is that you have no control over the calls. That doesn't mean they don't make calls at the wrong times that impact the direction of the game. We are 5-4 and it sucks. We were the better team at the Line of Scrimmage today and lost. -
Earl Campbell - A Football Life

Nice Call by the OP! When you consider he was 245 pounds at a time when lineman were not much bigger, and that DBs didn't catch him from behind i.e. the Monday Night 35-31 win over the Dolphins, he was perhaps the greatest pure power back ever IMHO. -
QB Rating Differential

Nice thread! I think it fairly accurately represents team strength as a quick and dirty proxy.
