Andy Benoit on Bills and draft
PolishDave replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
One could argue Tyrod is more of a pocket passer than Cam Newton is. Tyrod ran a combined 199 times in his last 2 years as a starter. Cam Newton ran a combined 222 times in his last 2 years. Tyrod outgained him though because he is more athletic than Cam Newton. Newton gained 995 yards. Tyrod gained 1148 with less runs. By the way, Tyrod also beat him in passing stats. Tyrod was more accurate - considerably more so. Higher completion percentage. Higher yards per pass. Face it. For as much flak as Tyrod has gotten from Bills "fans" - he has actually been a better player than Cam Newton who is held in such high regard around here. How many people would have guessed that? Weird huh? -
[closed]Why we may have to draft a QB first round
PolishDave replied to BuffaloBud420's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bad logic dude. Like really bad. It all depends on how the existing quarterbacks perform on the team this year. If they really need one next year, they will get one. They are less likely to take one next year however if they do draft one in the top couple rounds this year. -

Well where I differ from a lot of people I guess is thinking where the correction needs to occur. I think the bigger thing to correct, to see better quarterbacking, is/was the offensive design and types of play calls. And I hope to see that. I don't expect Tyrod's quarterback traits to change much at all. Maybe ever so slight improvement because of experience. Mechanics - doubt he changes at all. Decision making - might improve. Confidence - I expect improvement. That is all I expect to change. And that is all (in my opinion) that would have to change to see him have above average NFL starting quarterback stats. I certainly don't expect or think he will ever become an elite pocket passer. I think his absolute ceiling is right around cracking the top 10 in quarterback rankings. His floor is where he was last year in my opinion. I don't see him regressing until his legs begin to fail him. When that happens he will regress quickly and be out of the league. Of course that is just my guess. Could be totally wrong. -
Of course you would. So would anybody who is a head coach or GM. You want them yesterday. The catch is that if you have to make an accurate assessment about which guy to get and whether or not that guy will be good enough. If you over-reach for a guy by drafting one in the first who doesn't pan out - then you haven't just wasted a first round draft pick - you have also wasted the opportunity cost of the guy you would have drafted there instead of your miss. You can't afford to miss in the first round - especially a team like the Bills.

Andy Benoit on Bills and draft

Agreed. Nobody knows if we have seen his best football or not. Maybe we have. Maybe we haven't. Certainly conceivable that he could play better. Common sense tells you that. Especially if he has healthy Sammy all year. -

A quarterback who almost never runs with the ball. He never leaves the pocket unless absolutely forced to by overwhelming pressure. Some are more pure than others. Teams don't design any run plays for pure pocket passers. Ex: Drew Brees or Jay Cutler -

He HAS to be a pure pocket passer? I think there are some quarterbacks who disagree with that premise. Russ Wilson is probably the best example. I don't see the Seahawks ditching him anytime soon. I prefer a pure pocket passer also. I would rather have a guy like Bledsoe (good years) to be honest. But if you are going to get a pure pocket passer, you have to make sure that guys is so much better at executing the passing game that he at least makes up for the other benefits you get with having Tyrod. I think that is much harder to find than a lot of other people think. It seems like a lot of people here are of the attitude "I don't care if my new QB does anything other than pass the ball as long as he is better than Tyrod at passing the ball." The only thing wrong with having that philosophy is that the Bills might be a worse team because of it. Take a guy like Tannehill. Slightly better passer than Tyrod. But you can bet the Bills offense would completely suck with him (at least I think so). And the offensive line would look like a turnstyle on 3rd downs. And the running game would take a major step backward. All of a sudden 8 guys in the box and the BIlls can't run anymore because nobody is watching or worried about the QB taking off with the ball They cue in on Shady when he is the backfield instead of worrying about Shady & the QB. This is a completely different offense with a pure pocket passer - and probably a lot worse one - unless that pocket passer is really good to make up for those other big plays that Tyrod gets you. If the Bills build the best or close to the best pass blocking offensive line in football - then you could throw any decent pocket passer back there and he would probably do okay. (Dallas and Dak for example) But - the Bills aren't building that top notch pass blocking offensive line are they? These guys can run block with the best of them. But not so good at pass blocking. And a lot worse with a pure pocket passer in my opinion. And all of this assumes we have seen Tyrod already play his best football. If he plays better than he has in the last 2 years, gets more playcalls to throw the ball in a well designed passing offense and has healthy Sammy all year plus a decent #2 - he is going to have stats that suggest he is definitely above average - better than many of the leagues pure pocket passers - even if he still isn't a pure pocket passer. Or maybe I am totally wrong and he ends up sucking dogballs and gets thrown out of the league. We shall see. -
Could be. In my opinion, they do have their eye on a guy - maybe 2 guys - but that guy will be a late round pick - and that is if that guy is still available where they would be willing to spend that pick. Not sure if that is Mahommes/Trubisky/Watson in the second round or one of the other guys in the 3rd or later rounds. No problem with them taking a guy at 10 as long as they are that confident in him being a better overall quarterback than Tyrod - (not better in every area but better sum total of all quarterback traits). If they take a QB in the first and he flops bigtime - well then it is a major mark against McDermott and will likely kill his chance at a long coaching stay in Buffalo.
-
Exactly. If they see a "confident overall upgrade" - they will draft him at 10. If they see a QB that they aren't confident in but they think that "maybe" "could be" a franchise QB (better than Tyrod) then they might draft him, but it won't be until a later round because they aren't going to spend a first round and probably not a second or third on him either. He would be a low round guy. And that guy would not come in with the expectation that he is going to start this year or next. He would come in with the expectation that he only starts if and when he proves he is better than they other quarterbacks they already have. - Like Cardale - You don't draft guys in round 1 to throw into that mix. You draft immediate starters in round one and likely round 2 as well.
-
"Who have the potential to be significant upgrades over TT." Wishy washy weak and meaningless statement. You could say that about any QB in college about any quarterback in the NFL not named Tom Brady. That is not how the coaches will decide if and when to replace TT with a guy. They are more likely going on the basis of "Is there a guy we are confident is going to be better" See that is the difference. If you replace your phrase "has potential to be a significant upgrade" with "we are confident he is going to be an upgrade" - all of a sudden you are left scratching your head about the guys in the draft right now. And the reason those coaches likely aren't all that confident is because Tyrod is as good as he is - whether people want to admit it or not. If the coaches were comparing those college QB's to someone like EJ - it would be a no brainer. They would probably take a handful or more of these prospects over EJ. Having a decent Qb that is tough to find a replacement for is not a bad thing. It means your team is going in the right direction in terms of acquiring upgraded talent.

Bills 2017 Markting Slogan Fan Suggestions

Could be. But if he sleeps in team meetings or while watching film, he is quickly going to earn some bench time from Mr. McDermott. Hope Hughes has a record year. -
Jonathan Williams could be a beast...

Jamal Charles would be a wicked free agent signing if he hadn't have blown out his leg 2 years ago. Hasn't been the same since. Bummer. If he was as healthy as ever, can you imagine teams trying to deal with him and McCoy? Defenses would be entirely wiped out in the 4th quarter and would be missing tackles as a result. -
Nobody has a problem upgrading at QB John. No need to suggest that they do. Try to find one guy who doesn't want to upgrade. Anything short of Tom Brady could be upgraded when possible. Tyrod stayed in Buffalo for one primary reason (in my opinion) - because he thought it was his best opportunity. He wants to start and he wants to win. I think that HE thinks his best shot to do that is here in this style of offense with these players. As far as Whaley goes - Tyrod was never Whaley's guy in my opinion. He was Rex's guy. Now Tyrod is McDermott's guy at least for the time being. If McDermott didn't like Tyrod (at least enough to realize Tyrod is his best option for now) - then Tyrod would have been shown the door. I know you Tyrod haters can't stand that. But you can't change it either.

Andy Benoit on Bills and draft
PolishDave replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Comparing Tyrod to a pure pocket passer is a waste of time in my opinion. He's not a pure pocket passer. His strength is making plays "unexpectedly" with his legs and also making plays "unexpectedly" with his deep ball because he was able to extend a broken play long enough for a receiver to break away. He's not a Tom Brady, Matt Ryan style qb. Never has been. Never will be. He is very good at what his strengths are and his strengths are entirely different than those pocket passers. It's like people here are waiting for him to turn into a pure pocket passer. Silly. Not gonna happen. The guy is, however, an athlete with elite level football talent (not elite qb talent) who also has a great arm. If he has a system designed for his strengths and is given enough practice time to master the execution of those plays, the guy will be an incredibly "hard to beat" quarterback. I say that because his level of athleticism and level of improvisation is off the charts positive when it comes to football players. Remember, right now in every game plan a team makes against the Bills - those teams are worried about 3 main offensive threats from the Bills - Shady, Sammy and yes - Tyrod When you replace Tyrod you want to have a QB to replace him with who is good enough to force teams to consider him as a primary threat - so much so that they are afraid they are going to get beat by him embarrassingly if they don't defend him right. If opposing teams don't have to consider your QB as a primary threat in their game plans, then every defense you play against is a notch or two better than it otherwise would be. -
Tyrod Taylor extremely accurate over the middle of the field in 2016 and one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL under pressure. Quote from Greg Roman before the season started last year in regards to not throwing over the middle very often in 2015 - I definitely think that is something we did not focus on as a staff last year." Also before last season Rex Ryan was quoted saying "Because of the way we can run the football, we’re going to get a lot more coverages that dictate throws outside the numbers more so than a lot of teams." Tyrod's inability to "throw over the middle" is complete nonsense. Greg Roman admitted before last season that "middle of the field" passes were something they did not focus on as a staff. And yet Tyrod threw over the middle 1/3 of the time anyway and completed a very high percentage in 2016 (75.1%)

Running backs expected to be taken between Rounds 4-7
PolishDave replied to Wayne Arnold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So many good backs coming into the NFL this year - well pretty much every year for the most part. Show me one that can pick up a blitz though. Get me that guy. -
Wait a minute..... So now the Bills are going to draft Mahomes and Kelly? Dude......come on man...

Answer me this: What difference does it make if you do it in the first quarter and the team scores a touchdown against you or if you do it in the fourth quarter and the other team scores the touchdown then? I get the point you are trying to make. But in the end, the team with the most points wins. It doesn't matter when during the game the points were scored. Some fans imagine it does because it seems like games are often close. Well, they wouldn't be close if you went 3 and out and gave up the points earlier in the game. So the timing really doesn't matter. Does it. How would the story have changed if they played bad in the first quarter and great in the fourth quarter. You would have to call that first quarter a critical situation then. Or you would have to call the entire 2nd third and fourth quarters critical because the team would have been down the whole game. Would that then mean that the team played 3 good quarters in a critical situation? See how it works. The most important drive of the game isn't the last drive, it is every drive. If you want to have a dominant team, then every drive matters as much as the very last drive of the game.

Jabrill Peppers tested positive at combine
PolishDave replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No. These guys have taken drug tests before and they know ahead of time that drinking too much fluid (like a ridiculous amount) will cause a test fail. So if anything, if they were clean, they would purposefully avoid drinking way too much liquid. It would/should be high on their concern list. #entitlementmentality #kickemtothecurb -

Obviously they are waiting for this thread to hit page 100. -
Covered this in another thread but: Number of drives that went 3 and out Jets 38 Bills 39 Patriots 43 Dolphins 53 Fewest in league was Atlanta = 24 Most in league was San Fran & Rams tie = 59 Bills did not have anywhere near as many 3 and outs as people assume they did in 2016. Bills were ranked 12th for most yards per drive. As a unit, Bills offense was no slouch in 2016 Except Tyrod is an upgrade from Fitz and from EJ. So..... Seems to me like the Bills are on the right track. And I am sure they want to make sure the next QB is an upgrade to what is there now rather than just close their eyes throw a dart and hope. What is so hard to understand here?
