Kevon Seymour's potential in McDermott scheme
PolishDave replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Boyst ... When I read the word "disirregardless" in there I pictured a blond farm kid standing in a half-baled hayfield wearing coveralls with a piece of timothy grass sticking out his mouth speaking with a heavy southern drawl. I say I say that's disirregardless Sorry for the tangent. Just had to say that. Thanks for the laugh. -

I just don't think the Bills every thought nor still think MG is really above average. Consider this - In last year's Miami game in Miami - when Shady was out - why didn't Anthony Lynn (who I respect highly as a running game coach) lean on MG to carry the workload for that game and pound the rock against Miami? Maybe there were other reasons. I just think that if Anthony Lynn trusted MG - then they would have been pounding Miami with Mike G as some of us thought they were going to do going into the game. My sense tells me that the Bills just don't think as highly of him as some Bills fans do. He is replaceable - probably rather easily replaceable. -
No doubt. I am sure different teams/owners do it differently. If you are going to hand your coach all the reins for all the horses every time you get a new coach, then you have to expect it is going to take 4-5 years before that team is remolded into something that truly resembles what that coach has in mind. Only then will you really be able to assess whether his vision was good and his execution of that vision was adequate. If you have a GM who is drafting best players available and you have coaches who are just coaching - well then you can see if the coach is any good within 2 years or so. Or perhaps you can't build a Superbowl winner just drafting best players available - I don't know. Don't know when the last time was that was done.

That's one way to look at it. I always thought it was the job of the Gm to be the chief talent scout and personnel decision maker. It was the job of the coach to take the personnel he is given and assemble them into the best performing football team possible. Yet, I don't think that is what is happening here. Don't know for sure because I don't work inside the organization. It just appears (could be totally wrong about this) that the coaches (Rex and McDermott) have taken the role of chief talent scout and personnel decision maker. Meanwhile Whaley is serving more of an executive level advisory role to whether or not it makes sense to go after certain guys. Another way of putting it - Perhaps McDermott is the shot caller and Whaley is an advisor/business man who finds a way to make the coach's decision happen. Again, could be totally wrong. But it would make sense why Whaley has never said HE is the final decision maker and why the coaches have also never said WHALEY is the final decision maker. They are masking the fact that the coach (and possibly the ownership) are really the ones at the helm of the personnel search. Another thing that fits that scenario well is Pegula's seemingly very strong trust in Whaley. If Whaley hasn't called the shots recently (last couple years and this year now) it would make sense that there is nothing to hold him accountable for in regards to personnel decisions. Pegula would literally have no reason to fire Whaley if he isn't making the calls. Pure speculation. I have an active imagination.

Don't know what to tell you guys other than you look foolish digging in your heels on something you are so obviously mistaken about. Obviously, neither of you were paying attention when that draft happened. You just like to argue. Whaley openly owned and still owns the EJ draft. It is the most ridiculous conversation to still be having this long after the fact when it is public knowledge. Don't become stock traders. You will sit still staring at your computer screen in disbelief waiting to be proven right as you watch your Enron stock go to zero. Poof! -
I think it is fair to say neither of those guys were very accurate. Some of the balls were catchable - none were between the numbers - almost certainly because they were throwing as hard as they could. Video proves nothing either way in my opinion. Obviously both those guys are strong and can throw a football fast. I think everyone would have guessed that before watching this.

Fair post. I haven't seen the lack of accuracy from him so much. But I definitely have NOT seen all of his work. Your intuition could be pointing you in the right direction. We will know within a few years I think. I think we are at the same point. Almost everyone is afraid of spending a big pick on a guy - just to have him not be good enough. Because then you leave a hole on your team that you could have filled somewhat confidently- especially with pick #10. That's why I am pretty much okay with whatever they do at quarterback - as long as they end up being right about it. They really need to get it right. That is the most important thing. They need to accurately identify talent and whether a guy is going to succeed in the NFL. I know it is the hardest thing to do. But I don't want to rely on luck.

McDermott Coaching Style - Good or Bad
PolishDave replied to PolishDave's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good post brah! My initial gut sense for this season after this coaching staff was hired is that two things were going to happen - 1) The Bills defense would get much, much better against the run - pretty much immediately 2) The Bills offense would be much more balanced with running plays and passing plays than it has been for 2 years - which I expect to be a good thing My biggest fear is whether the defense will be able to defend a passing attack effectively. Really looking forward to finding out how good (or not) this Bills team is going to be. Hope McDermott is the next "great" and "legendary" NFL head coach who changes the game because he is better than everyone else. -

There will forever be people like you who believe it was Buddy when anyone paying attention knows it was Whaley. If you honestly believe it was Buddy it is because you weren't paying attention to the Bills when EJ was drafted. Buddy was still the GM purposefully so he could be a scapegoat for any bad decisions made in that draft. I think they did it to make suckers out of fans who weren't paying attention. Just hate how this has to keep being explained to people. The truth here is obvious. P.S. There are multiple threads on this forum that dig deep into it and explain every angle on the whole thing. If you are still convinced EJ was Buddy's guy and his primary decision - go dig through those old threads. It will make more sense to you why you are wrong about it. -

lol Give it time. There will be someone before the season is over. Even if the Bills miraculously went undefeated! -
They are going to put in a new double secret play - tight end option pass Johnny Rotten ... Rotten Johnny
-
Clay and Howard on the field at the same time with Watkins and Shady. I like the possibilities Mr. Newton. Images of executing plays designed to get the tight end the football paint rosy pictures of fast moving chains and points in the red zone.

McDermott Coaching Style - Good or Bad

It's what fans do. Not like I am crucifying him. Just expressing a concern that dawned on me unexpectedly today out of the blue. Not that big of a deal. Agree. Not Rex and as long as he wins. -
McDermott Coaching Style - Good or Bad
PolishDave replied to PolishDave's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes. I agree. That is why I think I was hoping for a more experienced coach who has been around long enough to have learned and knows how to create his offfensive/defensive structure to fit his players' strengths. I'm not trying to make a bigger deal out of this than it is. I will totally give him the benefit of the doubt for at least this season. I just don't want to the Bills to get stuck in a position where it takes the team 3 years to get the "right" personnel where they can execute his system properly and until then we suck. -
McDermott Coaching Style - Good or Bad

The thing that triggered the thought was something he said in his presser today - Still need to find the cornerbacks to fit his defense. That is the thought that triggered it. Gives me pause about his mentality towards football in general. I hate coaches who think winning or losing is more based on their genius schemes rather than the players' ability to make plays. I think that line of thinking is dead wrong. -
One thing that hit me today - Don't know why I didn't realize this sooner: Sean McDermott is a system guy. Sounds like he has his mind made up that he has to run his defensive system. I know some other coaches who think that way. One of them just got fired from the Bills last season. I guess McDermott is not the type of coach, nor probably has the experience to do so, who can take another team's defensive personnel and create the defense to best fit that personnel. Bummer. That is my first knock against the guy. But it is a significant one. Hope he gets the guys to fit his system. Not the type of coach I really wanted though. So far I like everything else about the guy that I have heard. But a guy stuck on his own system has me very concerned. Your opinions?
