I don't really care about the Chargers or the Patriots, or what they do in the playoffs. The point is, the league should've forseen situations like this when they realigned the divisions a few years ago. The system they have now is inviting a disaster scenario where a sub .500 team makes the playoffs as a division champion. The more teams you have in a division, the less likely it is that they'll all suck in a given year. Four teams? Its just not enough competition. Again, sooner or later, a 6-10 team is going to win a division and its going to be a major black eye against the league when it happens.
-
It is, but its the league's fault. They should have seen it coming when they went with these stupid four team divisions. Just wait, sooner or later, some team will win their division at 7-9 or 6-10. All hell is going to break loose when that happens.

Three coaches out in the span of one day...
Brandon replied to duey's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's what he usually does, alright. Ol' Ralph will take his dear, sweet time, giving everyone else a chance to thin out the ranks of quality available coaches, leaving us to choose between the retreads. -
They're right. It definitely sucks that an 11-5 team missed the playoffs, especially when an 8-8 Chargers team made it in. On the other hand, no team deserves to get screwed out of a playoff berth more than New England does, so to Patriot fans everywhere I say, f*** you, you buncha jackasses. You deserve what you got.

That would be a bad, bad decision, IMO. He did not have his best season, but Lindell has been a solid kicker during his tenure with the Bills. They can do an awful lot worse. Look at the 2001 season if you need an example.
-
We'll have to see what happens as far as the coaching staff is concerned, but if I were on this team and I played TE, DE or C, I'd be very worried about my job right now. If I were running the Bills front office, I'd strongly consider unloading everyone at all three positions over the next couple of seasons, with the possible exception of this year's rookies. With their salaries, the DEs in particular, should be concerned. The Bills are paying them an awful lot of money for little to no production. There probably need to be major changes at WR, LB and DT over the next couple of years as well, but right now, those seem to be of lesser priority than the first three spots.
-
The problem with the QBs largely IS the lack of a quality TE. This offense hasn't been able to threaten the middle of a defense consistently for years, and as a result, it makes their passing game easy to defend. Not many QBs are going to have success when they have a good #1 WR, a #2 WR better suited to being a third WR, a punt returner playing in the slot, and a TE much better suited to flipping McBurgers than playing in the NFL. Until the Bills make committment to upgrading the targets their QBs have to throw to (not to mention the C position, at the least), any QB they put back there is going to look bad. A good receiving TE would go a long way to solving that problem, but based on the last decade or so, I doubt they're smart enough to figure this one out.

It can happen. When I was a kid, I had a BB ricochet off a tree and hit dead center in the right lens of my glasses. Had I not been wearing them, I'm sure I would've been blinded by it. Luckily, no harm was done, it just bounced off the lens. I don't know how it didn't break it, because it hit pretty hard.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought when I saw it. As for him being the next Bruce Smith, well, Bruce had as many sacks as a junior as Orakpo has in his entire collegiate career to this point. That's not to say that Orakpo won't be a good NFL player or anything, simply that any comparison of him to Bruce doesn't seem all that appropriate.

No offense, but regarding the returning young players, I've heard that before. I'm not dead-set on drafting offense, either. It all depends upon who is available with that pick and whether the Bills might try to trade out of that spot, but all else being equal, I would much prefer they look to the TE and C position right now than DE, in particular. The draft 'value' isn't nearly as important to me as the value to the team itself. Would a major upgrade at either position make this offense significantly better? I think it certainly would.
-
You're absolutely correct. We had this same discussion last offseason. You can't win games unless both sides of the ball are, at the very least, competent. The Bills passing attack is a joke and has been for years. They have no TE and their 2nd WR could best be described as a poor man's Wayne Chrebet. The OL? Decent, but C has been problem for years. The Bills would be much more likely to win games if they'd aim for having a top 10 offense and defense. They're not going to win many games at all if they keep building on the defensive side and allowing the offense, particularly their passing attack, to rot. Statistically, the Bills have been in the bottom quarter of the league offensively for 6 straight seasons now. I understand that there are problems with the defense, and those problems would be an issue in the playoffs, but the reason this team can't make the playoffs to begin with sure as hell isn't due to the defense.

I'm in agreement with C/TE in R1. The Bills have desperately needed both for a decade or more, and while they might be able to find a quality C in FA (and they'd probably be better off), they won't find a good TE this year. As with another poster, Jermaine Gresham would be my first round target as it stands right now. If he does not declare for the draft, its likely that I'd look to LB, DT or possibly DE. In any event, these bottom five finishes the last several years offensively are not good enough and are the reason this team does not win. As big of a need as DE is, its a position that scares the hell out of me in R1. Its almost as difficult to find a good DE as it is to find a good QB. The last two seasons, 9 college DEs have gone in R1. They currently have posted a grand total of 19 sacks in the 2008 NFL season; Chris Long and Gaines Adams have half of those. Last year's board favorite, Derrick Harvey, has 12 tackles and 1.5 sacks (and those sacks came against the Lions). The point is, if the Bills draft a DE, they'd better know what they're doing, as its an unusually difficult position to draft effectively. I don't mind them picking one, but if they have any questions about the guy at all, they should walk away and turn their focus elsewhere. We don't need another Chris Kelsay or Ryan Denney making $4M per year.

Jauron Extension confirmed
Brandon replied to Sen. John Blutarsky's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hear you. I don't mind a team that loses, so long as they give an honest effort. That includes not only the players and coaching staff, but the front office as well. Otherwise, I wouldn't still be here as a fan of this team. On the other hand, if Dick Jauron returns with a new contract, coming off what looks likely to be a 2-10 finish this season, it is a clear signal to me as a fan that this front office has no interest in winning. I've got better things to do with my time than watch that bullsh**. That doesn't mean that I won't be a fan of this team anymore, but that I can't continue to invest in the garbage product that this front office appears intent upon peddling. I'm sure someone will call me a fair-weather fan, but I would argue that I did not give up on this team. They're the ones who have given up. I'll gladly come back to this team at such time as they appear interested in winning again, but at this point, that doesn't appear to be the case. I haven't left yet, but I've got one foot out the door. I'm just about done. -
Jauron will get fired, right? RIGHT?
Brandon replied to deep2evans's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Come on now. Weigh the options. Its second down, with 2 minutes left, and your team has the lead. Your choices? A backup QB who'd turned the ball over three times already vs your star RB who had 127 yards. It was such a brilliant call that ol' DICK outsmarted even himself, which is tough to do, because he's one hell of a smart guy. -
This is excellent news. Jauron can now draft that FS that we've been needing, plus, we stand a good chance at being able to select a solid 5th CB high in the 2nd round! That offense that's one of the worst in the league and has been for six straight years now? Nothing to be concerned about. Dick would rather punt than play offense anyway, and he's such a smart guy, I think we should trust him on that.

Welcome to the club. This is the first year I haven't had Sunday Ticket since 1998. I've found that I haven't missed it whatsoever, because its the same problems, the same bullsh** every single year.

Everyone will blame Losman, but...
Brandon replied to billnutinphoenix's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If its a choice between your backup QB vs your RB who has 127 yards and is averaging 6 yards per carry, it doesn't seem like much of a decision to me. Realistically, the worst that would've been likely to happen is that Marshawn runs it twice, fails to pick up the first down, and the Bills punt back to the Jets with about 1:30 left and with the Jets having no timeouts left. JP deserves his share of the blame, mind you, but that was a horrid, awful, stupid playcall given the circumstances. -

Brandon replied to billnutinphoenix's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He deserves blame for turning the ball over, but at the same time, I place at least as much blame on the total, utter and complete dumbass who called the play to begin with. I've never seen an offense so afraid of its own shadow as this one or a coordinator so capable of making idiotic calls at the worst possible opportunity. Turk should be fired Monday morning, and hopefully DICK will get fired right along with him. -
Nice playcalling, Turk, ya dumbass! Why in the hell would you pass in that situation, especially when your backup QB is playing and your RB is well over 100 yards on the game?
-
All else being equal, I agree. Then again, when the Bills have the ball, their best play is to punt, so their case is probably an exception.
-
I agree completely. Lindell is having an off-year, but the previous two, he was 42 of 47 on all field goal attempts. The Bills can do an awful lot worse than Rian Lindell. I certainly wouldn't get rid of Parrish or Whitner, either.
-
I'd probably cross over to the dark side and become a Cowboys fan. They're more or less the 'local' team for much of the south, anyway. Given that they're the only two teams my local cable affiliates even bother to carry, its probably a choice between them or the Titans if I actually ever wanted to see my team play a game. Enough time has passed that all of those players from the 90s Cowboys teams that I hated are gone and my animosity for the team is largely gone as well. Plus, they drafted a Razorback last year, Felix Jones, so that would certainly help. I still hate Jerry Jones, but at least the guy tries to win. That's something, I suppose.

Last 2 Games...Defense has given up 26 points

13 first downs and 163 total yards today. Not bad. -
The "Official" Bills Gameday thread!!

If this continues, are you sure you want them?
