I am not sure that I follow the analogy? In the old days Russ (the kid) would have to call Littman (mom) and say can I have another dollar? Now Russ is mom.I'll have to ask the same question again using an analogy. Mom gives you $5 in lunch money. You get to make whatever decision you want about what to buy with the $5. As you shuffle along in line through the cafeteria, they have a special one-day-only deal on your favorite meal. The price is $6. The choice is entirely yours, though.
-
The change is that he has final say on every expense Bills related. The Byrd thing is a perfect example. In the past Littman would have said that you have "x number of dollars." If his agent came back with a different number Littman would get a call and say yes or no. Now Russ makes that call.I some sense, does that matter? If the money guys in Detroit are still setting the overall operating plan of the business, can we really take it that Brandon getting to make the decisions to spend a little less on patching potholes in the parking lots and a little more on stadium security as evidence of a major shakeup in policy?
-
No, but Littman give a thumbs up or thumbs down to every financial decision. That is what changed last year. RB does not need to get a yes or no anymore. He decides. But, Littmann isn't going anywhere under the current assumptions. Brandon cannot operate the franchise outside or in opposition to the guidelines imposed by the trust/estate. (Besides, Littmann really never was the sort of attorney and money-manager that showed up at the combine to scout prospects, etc.)
-
He does have LOTS of power. There is no denying that. I happen to think (know) that Littman was the problem in the past. Time will tell if it is a good thing or not but I think that RB having the final decision (instead of Littman) is a huge positive.Yes, far too much with most of it being well outside of his area of expertise and therefore competence.
That's pretty much my point. He has far too much power for the team's good. He shouldn't have it.
On paper it's good, in theory he's been a huge part of the reason for the lack of the team's success.
You cannot have it both ways.

Correct, ultimately Russ give a yes or no. The football people may target a player but it comes down to Russ to decide. This used to be where he would have to run stuff past Ralph and Littman. As of last year Littman and Ralph stepped away from that part. Overdorf does the actual negotiating and tries to for said player into said budget. Overdorf does not decide on the financial commitment that the organization is willing to make.It seems when Whaley was talking about Russ and Overdorf handling the negotiations with Byrd's people that that might be directly related to football.

That has never been the case in Buffalo. RB has had his hands in EVERYTHING good and bad for about the last decade (since Donahoe). His role is to represent the owner's wishes. That is the case in a lot of organizations.Thank you, ... I didn't mean on paper, I meant practically speaking. Most teams let the GM run the team who in turn hires the coaches, and when that's not the case it's usually due to a meddling owner like Jerry Jones.
Brandon is nothing but a PR man, period. Is that really necessary? Maybe in Buffalo it is given all of the soap opera like issues related to the team in recent years, but from a football perspective he has no role.
-
RB is their boss. The president is above GM and head coach on the org chart. I believe that they are each direct reports to RB. I know that Whaley is for sure and I believe that Marrone reports to Russ and not Whaley.I'm trying to figure out WTF he's even doing here. We have a GM, Whaley, we have a head coach, Marrone.

My thought for the Bills offer would be something like 4 years $32M with $24M guaranteed with a strong morality clause that allows the Bills to recuperate some/all of the guaranteed money if he violates it.Given his his release, a team would be dumb to give him much guaranteed money. Jackson is the type of player that should just get 1 year deals. But he would be a good fit on the Washington Slurs. Besides Garcon, their wrs are trash. RG3 could throw some nice bombs to Jackson.

+1...I always get called a Kool-Aid drinker but I agree.I know this thread will undoubtedly garner some negative feedback which I wish it wouldn't but I think it needs to be said. I am so proud of Russ Brandons efforts throughout this last year or so. I think he's handled himself with a massive amount of class and put the Bills on the right road. It was obvious to me this week that not only had he lost his boss and his mentor, he had lost a friend when Mr Wilson passed and has understood that the bills fans, whilst grieving, are seeking some form of continuation. The stadium committee announcement couldn't have been timed better in reality in terms of showing that they are looking for a way to keep the Bills in Buffalo. He showed himself to be one of the people today at the billsmafia tailgate. He is trying to be everything to everyone in my view and I just want to commend his effort. As I said no doubt this thread will have a lot of negative responses but I feel the man has done Buffalo proud. i just hope he is allowed to finish the job that he has started.

I like all 3 of those guys and think that they are all really safe (along with Robinson). I just don't think that they spend the price that it will cost for anything other than QB.just my take. I'm not a fan of Mack, Clowney, or Watkins that high. Personally, I think Mack is going to be overpowered in the NFL, Clowney, the same, and Watkins is nothing special to me. I think Barr is going to be the best defender in the draft and as far as wideouts goes, I'm guessing Benjamin will be better than both Evans and Watkins. I don't watch a ton of NCAA but I watch highlights and that's my take. I'd just like to go big and beefy and mail people on the line. Punish people that try and defend the run.
-
I do not think that the Bills will be trading 2 1sts and a 2nd for a RT. Watkins or Mack maybe, Clowney possibly but a QB (ie Manziel) is the only reason that they could realistically be looking to go to #1. If they believe that he is the answer than it is possible but no other position can warrant that. As special as some of those guys could be it just isn't realistic.fixed it for you

My sense is that the Bills are going to take a big swing at Jackson. I don't expect much (if any) back and forth. I think that they are quietly going to present a really solid offer and it will either get it done or it won't. That's how the Bills do business.I have a sneaky suspicion they are going to get him too...

Thanks, I opened this expecting some sort of breaking news. Please change title

Intetesting thought with Spiller Astro. His names immediately came into my head when I heard the rumors of the Bills going up to #1.BUF trades CJ Spiller and their RD1#9 to Houston for the first overall pick.
1 1 Khalil Mack DE43 Buffalo (or Clowney)
2 41 Jordan Matthews WRF Vanderbilt
3 73 A Seferian-Jenkins TE Washington or Niklas TE Notre Dame (I prefer Niklas). Tiny Richardson?
4 109 Lache Seastrunk RBF Baylor --- Here's your Lightning...
5 149 Terrance West RBF Towson --- ...And your Thunder (Andre Williams also there)
6 185 John Urschel OG Penn State --- smartest OG in the draft
7 224 Cornelius Lucas OT Kansas State*
*Lucas was midrounder but stress fracture in left foot, suffered during pre-Combine and didn't work out for NFL teams prior to draft. Developmental prospect, has OTs' longest arms (36 3/4"), 10" hands, and size (6-8, 316).

We don't disagree there. If we could get him the ball, my friend
If we had a gunslinger at QB and an offense designed for it. Sure we could . But i think Buffalo is about creating package mismatches . Last year Bills finally tried to toss the ball long and create break out plays . I am not blaming EJ as much as the situation .
I sure wont argue Jackson would not be a potential playmaker for any team though. Lotta money for a team that cantsee or hit a wide open Goodwin time and time again

I think that it has to do with his friends. It's not his production. He may end up in some trouble but if you write the contract appropriately you can protect yourself.I keep asking myself why Chip Kelly didn't think he needed a WR that had over 1300 yds and seemed to flourish in his offense. I think he didn't like his work ethic or contract and the rest didn't help. -
You think that there is a 1300+ WR on this roster? I don't and I like the guys that the Bills have for the most part (SJ, RW, and MG). DJ would instantly be the best pass catcher on the roster. We could get that with our current lineup when the Offense of Nathaniel Hackett settles down .
He is really good though.
-
Maybe a big WR would be ideal but do we really not need a WR that had over 1300 yards last year? He is really good.We dont need him. does anyone else see this? we need a big receiver like an andre johnson type

That's a pretty interesting take and one that hasn't been mentioned. It kind of goes back o to that discussion about % of the cap to allocate to each position. You are taking it a step further by dividing it into parts of the game. Good thoughtsFor a position group with 6 guys, we have 1 on average vet pay and 5 rookie deals (non of which are even first rounders). Our TEs are likely among the lowest paid group in the league. And Our qb group is likewise among the cheapest in the league.
Our passing game could easily justify a little spending.

The plan apparently is to play Rivers 3 downs. Lawson is good in coverage. I am not saying that either is great but LB now has to fall behind RT, WR, DE and TE IMO. Between Kiko, Spikes, Lawson, Rivers and Bradham they are okay (especially in a 4-3). They could use another but not at the expense of those other positions. You do realize that both Lawson and Rivers both are among the lowest rated LBs in the league? Neither negate the need for getting a true every down linebacker. Both are simply depth. Getting Rivers in FA changes nothing, his benefits are questionable. We can always hope for a miracle, and have nothing turn into something, but the odds are not good. Luckily he is dirt cheap. And as much as Lawson fills a need, again he is not great at anything. You need a quality all down LB opposite Kiko to have a playoff team. And while Schwartz's defense may not require the versatility of Pettine, he still requires more flexibility than a rigid moribund defense like a Wannie defense would.

Great postSo...I'm not arguing the need for versatility...I get that...But you have to gauge the value of versatility against the value of another prospect that can offer much more while using a premium Draft pick...Especially a 1st or 2nd round pick...How big is the need of versatility for a position that NFL teams are playing an average of 2 guys on 57% of Defensive snaps? You want to utilize a premium pick for versatility on Defense? Then I would much rather see the Bills use a premium pick on a big Safety. Because a big Safety is going to be on the field for 100% of the Defensive snaps...
If a guy like Skov is the best prospect available in the 3rd round I can see that...But he's not going to be the BPA in the 2nd round...I can all but guarantee that much...Especially in this Draft...

I will try to give a realistic example of my thinking because I haven't done a very good job painting the picture. Are the Bills a better team with Lewan, Moncrief and Jackson Jeffcoat or with Sammy Watkins and Joel Bitonio? Obviously, no one knows at this point but this is the kind of debate that they are going through when considering trading up.
-
KOKBILLS, I don't disagree. I am not saying that Evans or Lewan are Spam. I was just saying if you think that Watkins upside is AJ Green vs. Moncrief being a Stevie Johnson (I know that they are different types of players) ceiling than go for it. Use the 2nd that you may spend on Moncrief to o get Watkins. I am not saying definitely but if they think they are close (which as you said is debatable).

I am a huge Goodwin fan as well but in Philly Maclin and Jackson were fairly redundant and had some success. I would think that would be the end of TJ Graham and the draft prospects of Evans. I think that Ebron would still be a realistic target at 9 however. When you spread the field you would have Jackson, Woods, Stevie, Goodwin and Ebron. That's really good IMO.I'd prefer not. Talented receiver, may be motivated, but I'm in Goodwin's camp and can see redundancy between the two of them and expect some big things from him this year if healthy. A Desean pick-up would also effect the draft and the Bills need to have a Mike Evans/ Kelin Benjamin type more than another speedster with Manuel begind center.
